The Mockiavelli 1.0: A.J Green goes No. 1 overall

If the Liberty Bowl is A.J. Green's last game at UGA, will he be remembered as the best receiver in school history? Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com

A.J. Green , of Summerville, S.C., won't have to travel far as the Carolina Panthers will select him No. 1 overall in the 2011 NFL draft. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)

Here it is, the first Mock Draft of draft season.

Most of the teams have their draft boards set going into the combine, which starts on Thursday.

They are on targeted missions for more information on players and will adjust their boards accordingly after the combine.

The Falcons are all set, too.

“We just finished our February cross-check meetings and we have, through that process, really refined our position

stacks across our draft board,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We are starting to narrow down on potential draft picks going into the combine. We feel like we are right on track where we planned on being at this point.”

The Falcons could go a couple of different directions  in the first round, but given the depth at the defensive end position I have them taking Allen Bailey from Miami. More on him later.

“Those draft meetings in February are vital because we are able to move away from the generalize stack by position to a much more specific stack,” Dimitroff said. “At this point in the year, you get to a point were you feel that the pieces are really starting to come together.”

All righty then, on to Mockiavelli 1.0.

A.J. Green is the best player in the draft, so he’s going No. 1. It’s really that simple.

“The game that really caught my eye, was when he came back against Colorado,” NFL Network draft analyst Mike “On

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: The College Park native passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 64 to lead the Tigers to their first national title since 1957 and a 14-0 season. The Heisman Trophy winner had a passer rating 182.05, while throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 TDs. Mark J. Terrill, Associated Press

the Money” Mayock said. “Colorado has got two NFL corners in Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown. He came out and he had like seven catches for 118, 120 yards and two touchdowns. He dominated the game.” Check the video.

Green will interview well with teams and that will help him rise to the top of the draft.

“He’s got the best combination of height, weight and speed and he can catch the ball,” Mayock said. “I believe he’s physical enough to get off of press coverage. If you are every going to look at a wide receiver and say this is a guy that’s going to fit any offense, A.J. is the guy.”

He’ll be the first of three Georgia Bulldogs going in the first round.

Offensive lineman Clint Boling is going to Chicago with the 29th pick and Linebacker Justin Houston is going to New York Jets with the 30th pick.

THE BOOK OF BAILEY: The “Book of Bailey” is not all good.

He was inconsistent at Miami and didn’t make plays to match his athleticism.

He will have to interview well in Indianapolis and more importantly defensive line coach Ray Hamilton will have to figure out if he can motivate this kid and turn him into a stud.

He’s going to be the biggest, fastest and strongest defensive end at the combine. With his athletic ability, Bailey should put on absolute combine show.

Mike Mayock has Missouri's Blaine Gabbert as the top rated quarterbackentering the NFL scouting combine. Gabbert throws a pass during his team’s Setp. 19, 2009, game against Furman in Columbia, Mo. (The Associated Press/L.G. Patterson)

But there are some issues  . . . .

“He has all of the tools,” ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said. “It just hasn’t all come together yet. I think part of it is inconsistent effort. Sometimes you see him and he’s not going 100 miles an hour.”

OK, that’s going to be a big problem. But Hamilton can fix it.

“But I also think part of it is his instincts and consistently knowing what he wants to do in certain situations,” McShay said. “He’s played different positions. That could factor into it, that he hasn’t really settled into what he’s doing. He’s struggled sometimes getting off blocks.”

The Falcons will likely view him as a scheme fit at left end.

“I think he could be a good player in the NFL, I just don’t think its all come together,” McShay said. “He has to continue to work and be willing to pay the price in order to get there. If he does, he could wind up being a steal in the second round.”

He could be a steal at 27 in the first, too.

AJC’s 2011 Mockiavelli 1.0

Staff writer D. Orlando Ledbetter projects the first round:

1. Carolina: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia: They get Jimmy Clausen a weapon and look to trade Steve Smith.

2. Denver: Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson: They go for the elite pass rusher.

3. Buffalo: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn: Chan Gailey elects to take on this disruptive force to anchor his defense.

4. Cincinnati: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: Bye-bye T.O. and OchoCinco. They can pair Jones with Jordan Shipley, Jerome Simpson and tight end Jermaine Gresham in the passing game.

5. Arizona: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama: Some have him rated over Fairley.

6. Cleveland: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: With Peterson and Joe Haden the Browns will have their best cornerback tandem since Hanford Dixon and Frank Minnifield.

7. San Francisco: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: The Alex Smith experience is officially over. Newton will face some scrutiny at the combine, but if he is frank with teams, he’ll be the top QB selected.

8. Tennessee: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin: “I’m very impressed with J.J. Watt from Wisconsin,” Mayock said.

9. Dallas: Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M: The Cowboys get some help for their front seven.

10. Washington: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri:  “On the Money” Mayock has Gabbert rated as the top quarterback in the draft.

11. Houston: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska: They have to improve the worst secondary in the league.

12. Minnesota: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: I can’t imagine the conversation between Bill Musgrave and Bobby Petrino over this one. Hey they are professionals and will work it out.

13. Detroit: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College: The Lions get quarterback Matthew Stafford some protection.

14. St. Louis: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina: It seems like the Rams have been drafting defensive linemen for the last decade.

15. Miami: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama: They get Ingram to help the aging backfield.

16. Jacksonville: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa: They get a bookend for Tyson Alualu.

17. New England: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado: The Patriots’ line is starting to show come cracks.

18. San Diego: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA: Larry English (remember him) has been a bust.

19. New York Giants: Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois: They fortify their defensive front.

20.  Tampa Bay, Cam Heyward, DE, Ohio State:  “Just put their bowl game,” Mayock said. “He dominated that game. He was phenomenal against Arkansas.”

21. Kansas City: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin: Their offensive line was not up to playoff standards last season.

22. Indianapolis: Tyron Smith, OT, UCLA: They get Smith in order to improve Peyton Manning’s protection. He took too many hits last season.

23. Philadelphia: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami: Harris will come up in run support and the Eagles are getting very thin at the position.

24. New Orleans: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue: He’s one of those super motor guys.

25. Seattle: Jake Locker, QB, Washington:  Matt Hasselbeck won’t play forever. The Seahawks go with the local legend who’ll eventually compete with Charlie Whitehurst for the starting job.

26. Baltimore: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado:  They address a need.

27. Atlanta: Allen Bailey, DE, Miami: See above!

28. New England: Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri: They get some more help for the young defense.

29. Chicago: Clint Boling, OL, Georgia: Offensive line coach Mike Tice worked wonders with the offensive line last season.

30. New York Jets: Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia: The Jets need another pass rusher as Jason Taylor is getting old and Vernon Gholston’s hasn’t panned out.

31. Pittsburgh: Mike Pouncey, G, Florida: He joins his brother and the twins anchor the line for the next decade.

32. Green Bay: Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State: They always go with the biggest, baddest and meanest dude left on the board. That’s Paea, even though they have B.J. Raji.

ON THE FRINGE: Aaron Williams, CB, Texas; Marcus Cannon, OL, TCU; Christian Ballard, DE, Iowa; Titus Young, W,  Boise State;  Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland; Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame; Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor; Cam Jordan, DE, California; Martrez Wilson, LB, Illinois and Rahim Moore, S, UCLA.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

AJ will not be #1…his questionable morals (i.e. illegally selling used athletic gear for money) will put him outside of the Top 5. UGA draftees from the Richt period have proven to be “soft” by NFL standards (i.e. Matthew Stafford). This perception doesn’t help AJ any.

AJ is definitely no CJ……

Love A.J. Green’s game, demeanor, smarts and seems to be a great guy. Just don’t think he is a great fit in Carolina. It will be okay if he drops to a team that will be better suited for him or a team trades up to get him. Don’t go to Cincy!!! Can St. Louis or Arizona step up????

AJ may be the safest pick in the draft, but taking a wide receiver as the first pick in the draft is crazy. I don’t believe it will happen, unless AJ agrees to a contract similar to the 5 pick taken. I am not really sure I would even take a wide receiver that high. Calvin Johnson is good, but not sure he was worth as high of pick as he was taken.

As for the Falcons, I don’t think they will take anyone who has talent, but not the motivation. Sounds too much like Jamaal Anderson (or way back, Andre Bruce).

People need to do a bit more research on Bailey. He didn’t play DE his whole career. They’d have him playing DT a week then the next 3 weeks he’s at DE. Another lineman would go down and he’d go back to DT. He’d didn’t really have the luxury to benefit from playing his true position his whole career and that doesn’t include the double teams. I don’t hear hype about other DE’s in the draft beating double teams week in and week out. Bailey will be a stud.

I don’t see the falcons taking a DE with a bad attitude and a questionable work ethic in the first round. The Pouncey brother that stood up to those lazy freshmen is another question all together especially considering the fact that there are three o linemen that enter free agency this year.

Orlando can we speculate about free agents and late round pick ups?

I would like to see Atlanta get Darren Sproles to replace Norwood. He’s more versatile and has big time dual threat potential. He’s not an every down back but that’s not what Atlanta needs. I know he won’t be cheap but it would be money well spent IMO.

If Atlanta doesn’t give Kris Durham a long look to replace Finneran then something is wrong. Durham has a great attitude, size, soft hands and can climb the ladder.

Love AJ, by far the best receiver in lifeltime at UGA (32 yrs). THat being said, the Panthers can’t take him 1st. Bowers or Fairley can have a much bigger impact than AJ can. There are 5 more D players on “the fringe” above so they would move to early 2nd round picks and could begin to repair their D.

Unless the Panthers are planning on being the worst team again and plan on drafting Luck next year. This is also very possible.

This league is about Quarterbacks. Wide Receivers are a dime a dozen. You have to have somebody to get the ball to the receiver. That makes it hard for AJ to win ROY. I’ll admit he has a chance if Palmer is throwing him the rock.

Wow, lot’s of animosity in here. I don’t think Carolina will go WR w/ the #1 pick, even if he’s the best player. I see them going w/ either Bowers, Fairley, or Dareus. I hope the Falcons go w/ Torrey Smith unless someone who should go much higher drops in their lap for some reason; like Julio Jones, or Castonzo, or Clayborn. I don’t see any of those guys falling to us, I wouldn’t mind seeing us trade up if the deal is right, like trade w/ Pats for #18 pick and jump ahead and get someone on the board we want if we only have to give up a 3rd or something. I think we need only a few players to be ready, we don’t have to use all picks, we’ve built a team and need to do like the Jets did 2 years ago, they traded up for Sanchez, then traded up for Shonne Green, two players they wanted and let the other picks go to get them, they’ve been to 2 consecutive AFC Championships since. When you’re almost ready you just have to go for the difference-makers to get what we need, if the right deal comes along trade up even higher if you can get a true playmaker. I still say we should at least nose around to the Texans about Mario Williams, there’s talk about if or where he’ll fit in the 3-4 scheme, maybe the Texans deal him for our first and another pick and JA98 (a better 3-4 guy), it’s worth checking out.

It’s kinda sickening that we had all of these current and future NFL first rounders and starters (Stafford, Knowshon, MoMass, A Allen, now these three, and I’m probably missing some) and the ‘08 team lost three games.

Some team will get a real gem if they draft Kris Durham in the later rounds. Good hands, crisp routes, and speedy enough – I hate to think what our record would have been without him last season.

Oimpotentone- is it because Stafford is soft or because he was drafted by the first winless franchise in NFL history? He spends 2/3 of the game on his back and there is only so many times you can have a 300 lb lineman falling on you.

He should’ve taken the Elway/Manning approach and refused to sign there. The best he can hope for is to play out his exsisting contract and go sign with someone else.

Bailey just isn’t the type of player that T Dimitroff will put up with. Yes, he has some versatility (which we like) but he is inconsistent in both effort and results(which we don’t). By now, we all know the type of guys TD/MS are looking for. Seniors, team captains, self starters, high work ethic/character, fast and urgent. Dimitroff goes out of his way to repeat this formula to whomever will listen, yet folks seem to be surprised when he goes out and gets men who fit that description. I won’t even begin to argue about AJ Green and who will go #1 as it won’t affect our draft one way or another, and there’s no way I would entertain the idea of trading UP, period. Trading DOWN is the way to keep building for the future….

Sorry DOL, you da man but Mr. Dimitroff will take the best WR available and then either go free agent (my preference) on a DE or 3-4 OLB, or grab two of the best available DEs from the middle rounds (a la Belichick).

I also am so sick and tired of hearing people keep screaming, for these so called “can’t miss” 1st round defensive picks. Not a chance A.J. Green goes #1 overall. Not a question of talent, as he may be the most talented player, but Carolina has far greater needs in rebuilding than wide receiver, defensive line is probably where they will look. As an organization they’ve had much more success identifying and drafting top D-line talent and also receieved little production from a lot of receivers from the first two rounds (Colbert, Jarrett, Edwards, LaFell) lately.

The Panthers are not taking AJ Green, they have good wideouts and need help at QB and DL. Wouldn’t be surprised to see them take Fairley after watching what Suh did this past year. Allen Bailey? Mayock said he would be a steal in the 2nd round, which means he would be a reach in the 1st round, not a steal in the 1st round as you somehow worked out in your head. DOL you are clueless when it comes to the draft!

FACTS
The jury’s still out on TD “high character” approach and whether we need to focus less on off field issues when it comes to acquiring players–the fact remains, however, that this IS our GM’s MO. When it comes down to a choice between 2 equally talented guys, he’s going for the type of player I listed earlier. It’s not a question of what I think about Bailey–he just doesn’t fit TD’s self-described formula….
