Bob Bratkowski, the son of former Georgia standout Zeke Bratkowski, has agreed to become the Atlanta Falcons new quarterbacks coach, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.

“Obviously it’s a quality organization from the top down,” Bratkowski said when reach by phone. “It’s a winning organization. Obviously to coach a quarterback like Matt Ryan and be on a quality staff in the NFL is very attractive.”

The Falcons defeated the Bengals last season at the Georgia Dome.

“Anytime you win as many games as they have over the last three years they are doing a lot of things extremely right,” Bratkowski said. “That’s easy to be attracted to.”

Bratkowski served as the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator from 2001 to 2010. He is credited with developing quarterback Carson Palmer.

He was fired after the 2010 season and Palmer has since requested a trade from the team.

Bratkowski played wide receiver in college at Washington State.

He coached in the college ranks at Missouri, Weber State, Wyoming and Miami.

He made the jump to the NFL in 1992 with the Seattle Seahawks. He became their offensive coordinator in 1995.

He also coached with the Pittsburgh Steelers before taking the offensive coordinator position with the Bengals.

Zeke, his father, played quarterback for 14 seasons in the NFL, seeing action for the Bears, Rams and Packers.

Robert “Bob” Bratkowski (pronounced “brat-COW-skee”)(born December 2, 1955 in San Angelo, Texas) was the offensive coordinator for the NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals from 2001 to 2011.

From 1975-77, Bratkowski played wide receiver at Washington State. He was later an assistant coach at Missouri and the offensive coordinator at Weber State, Wyoming, Washington State and Miami before making the jump to the NFL. In 1992, Bratkowski became an assistant coach with the Seattle Seahawks before being promoted to their offensive coordinator in 1995. Bratkowski left Seattle to become an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2001, Bratkowski was offered the job of offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals, a position he held for a decade until January 31, 2011, when he was terminated from the Cincinnati Bengals as reported by ESPN news. Bratkowski’s final work with the Bengals was coordinating the North squad of the 2011 Senior Bowl, but at halftime his duties were handed over to quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese.

His father, Zeke, played quarterback for 14 seasons in the NFL, seeing action for the Bears, Rams and Packers.

Bob and his wife, Rebecca, have two children — son Shane and daughter Courtney.

And exactly why is that, Ledbetter????? Cincy had two winning records during his tenure, the rest were mostly disasters with a couple of breakevens, and his claim to fame is that he developed Cason Palmer, who is going to be run out on a rail from Cincy???

I agree tampadawg before his injury he was a top 3 quarterback. Before drew brees became great. He head top offenses for a nice stretch. I think this is a card to be played in the future. This is mm eventual replacement. If the offense lags in the first half, mm is out the door this gives us familiarity with the team making for an easier transition. That is why he is so elated he knows he will be our next oc and I will be thrilled. He has that attack style not the conservative type. This td guy is pure genius! U guys need to chillax. 2 time E. O. Y. Has a plan! Dimitroff will learn from his few mistakes and only get better in fact this team will only get better. Btw when speaking of draft needs. We need another qb to push redman and j p wilson. Mike m. Loves players that can throw. His prior teams had college qbs turned position players. That he often allowed him to use gimmick plays. That’s his form of big plays. We don’t have the personel to allow him that luxury. Look for us to draft a fast qb and make him a wr. Just my 2 cents!

From a Bengal fan, Carson requested a trade before Brat was fired. If you look at the Bengals offense the last 3 seasons, it has been getting worse and worse under this guy. If this guy has anything to do with the play calling, Matt Ryan’s career may be in jeopardy, as well as the Falcons may be headed downhill. I will say, Carson getting his knee torn up then his elbow/shoulder didn’t help him. But, this guy’s offense was horrible. More interested in controlling the ball than scoring. There was nothing to it. A high school team would be able to defend against it. If Brat has anything to do with the play calling, you will only see the ball fly more than 10 yards on bombs and if the Falcons fall behind like 3 TD’s with 1 quarter left, which for Brat was often.

As a Bengal fan, if there was anyone I enjoyed in the league, it was Matt Ryan. I feel sorry for him now.

I will say, it wasn’t soon after Carson’s knee injury that the Bengals also lost most their offensive line to free agency. It has been trying to rebuild it ever since, with no luck. If the Falcons have a good line, you could still be OK. But, I still wouldn’t put a bit of trust in Brat’s offense. Carson has been missing more and more since the knee. And, Brat hasn’t been able to put together an offense for it.

If I recall right, just look at the offensive stats from the senior bowl Brat was Offensive Coordinate in, for the North team. 1 first down the entire first half (mid 2nd quarter) with some of the best college players in the land, first TD at the end of the 3rd Q. Being forced to pass, you have padded QB stats.

Gawd I love all you negative commentors,BTW what exactly is your experience in running a NFL team??? 1) Carson Palmer is a damn fine QB, who has a shotgun arm. 2) Bratkowski is a well respected coach. 3) Palmer is not being run out of ciny on a rail, he’s actually trying to get traded or released. because he’s trying to go to a team that will actually being willing to provide him with the tools to win a championship. Is the fact that the Falcons have never won a championship making you so miserable that alls you can do is think the worst? what a load of BS, If any of you guys have any experence then go ahead and speak, otherwise Shut the hell up and let Smitty and TD do what they do best , continue to improve this team!!

Well, I guess based on many of the comments on this board, the fans are not supposed to have opinions on any actions the management of Atlanta professional sports teams make. We are supposed to meekly bend over and nod our heads and remain silent.

Guess what, that is not what these boards are for. They are for debate and opinion. If you just want to nod your head in agreement, then go ahead, but don’t rag on the posters.

I think it is a poor hire and they could have done better. Am I a professional football coach? No. Do professional football coaches and GMs screw up every day? Yep. No one is infallible.

I agree with Keith about all the negativity. Of course Keith, we have such experts here and a Cincy Bengal fan that knows everything. For you experts out there, if a coach or coordinator has deficiencies in the offensive line, quarterback position and skilled postions he is going to look bad, as the team will look bad, and it is the same on the defensive side of the ball. Throw in an organization that is, and has been basically pitiful most of its exsistance (Cincy) and the odds are pretty much stacked against you. Actually the Bengals and Falcon have alot in common from the pitiful exsistance angle, that is until Mr. Blank bought the Falcons…now you see real organization with a real coach that brings in good players for the most part and the goal is the Super Bowl. I trust these guys and their decision making alot more than some negative moron bengal fan here, or any other of the “experts”.

Now listen very closely, Sissies and Dummies, so I will not have to come back here and spoon feed you: Bratkowski, a very experienced NFL coach and the son of a 14 year NFL quarterback was brought here to “fine tune” the 3 year veteran and highly intelligent QB in Matt Ryan, “develop” him.

LISTEN to me!!! I am a Falcons fan trapped in Cincy. I have watched the Bengals for the last 10 years. You cannot blame much of anything that happened here on any of the coaches. This team has THE worst owner in the NFL. He makes Al Davis look like a genius. The Bengals have the smallest scouting staff in the NFL. Mike Brown believes he knows more about football than scouts, coaches, players and fans. Coaches are forced to take players Mike Brown wants, even if they hate those players. Coaches are over ruled by Mike Brown on anything from the draft to the play book. Carson Palmer’s head has never been right after the injury. Other analysts have said his internal clock is messed up. That voice in your head that tells you, “Ok the rush is coming from the right… I have 2 seconds… be patient….patient… throw.” His clock tells him “They are gonna injure me…throw.” I don’t think you can make a judgment, good or bad, about Bratkowski from his time in Cincy. You cannot judge a man’s actions who works for a lunatic. I think the Falcons hired him because he has similar philosophy to Smith… run the ball, stop the run, keep the game close, control the clock, win in the 4th quarter. Some of you may not like that style, but it is what it is. It works for teams like the Ravens, Steelers, and Jets. Eventually, Smith will get this defense where he wants it and we will be like those teams. We are still a ways away. We need another really good OLB (maybe 2 as I am not sold on Weatherspoon being elite), an elite pass rusher, a run stuffing DT, and a nickel back that doesn’t look like a high school player that got tossed into the playoffs.

Now, the one thing I do question is at what point did Bratkowski become a QB coach? He has never played QB so how is it that he will develop a QB and teach him how to be a better QB? I don’t understand exactly how that works. Wouldn’t you want a guy who was a successful QB to be your QB coach?

Let’s all get used to another boring season of offense!!! He is just another Yes Man for TD and Coach Smith! He ruined Palmer to the point he wants out of Cincy and that ought to tell all of us fans what Palmer thinks about his career and coaching for his 7 years with the Bengals. Palmer will retire if the Bengals don’t trade him as he requested, who can blame him? They keep the same old coaches and staff and Lewis should have been long gone as the head coach.
The Falcons offense will be no different next year even with more play makers, Mularky is way to predictable on play calling and any drafted rookies will sit on the bench like Sidbury and Adkins do, never know if they can play, oh yea, Owens should have been cut right after that game with Green Bay. He froze up and doesn’t have the coverage skills needed at the NFL level. I guess he is on the roster so TD and Coach Smith can brag about all the drafted players making the roster!!!

It surprises me how little most people seem to know about football. I don’t understand what many of you expect. This is who Mike Smith is. He is a throw back, old school, 4 yards and a cloud of dust kind of coach. He is going to run the ball and stop the run. He is going to keep games close and believe that his team will be the better team in the 4th quarter. He is not going to throw the ball for 350 yards a game or use a lot of 4 and 5 wide sets. He is not going to use a lot of gadget plays. He is not going to score in under 2 minutes on every drive. If that is your idea of a boring offense then this team is not the one for you. If you don’t like it, I suggest you become a Saints fan. They are more your style. If however, you can learn to appreciate a smash mouth old school style football team that hearkens back to the days when teeth were left on the football field, then this team has a lot to look forward to in the future. You people act as though we won 4 games. I will remind you all that we lost to the Current Superbowl Champs, The Defending Superbowl Champs, the Current AFC Champs, and one of the hottest teams in the NFL at the time. It is not like we got swept by the panthers people. Our style of play works… we just need more play makers. We have no WR that will make teams pay for double covering Roddy. If you look at the teams that advanced in the playoffs, they have one thing in common…. DEPTH. We have some good starters, but there is a HUGE drop in talent from those few play makers (Ryan, White, Gonzo, Turner, Abraham, Grimes, Lofton, Moore) and the rest of the team. What makes a great team is when the back ups and role players are nearly as good as the starters. Look at how the Steelers and Packers bench stepped in and the teams didn’t miss a beat. We have playoff caliber coaches, we just don’t have a playoff caliber roster yet. It takes time to build a team.

Good choice, anyone that could put up with and survive that mess in Bengals land has got to be tough not to mention he did it for 9 years and since he was th OC he could step into Mularkeys spot when necessary as well as add to Mularkeys play calling approach by opening up the offense.

Once again you can see Mike and TD being on the same page for the present as well as the future.

Congrats to Bob and the Falcons organization for a great choice.

I have lived in Atlanta all my life and the whole time the Falcons have had a team.
Never bought one ticket.
On the savings, I retired early.
Even the Superbowl year just added greatly to the costs of their fans while just providing a bigger heartache.
It’s a shame Blank didn’t wait for an opportunity to buy the Braves where his money could have done some good.

The Bengals, since no one else wanted the job, were the only place he could become an O coordinator.

This guy is an All Pro yesman.
No one else could have withstood the Bengals owner’s medling.
And the Falcons want that because it’s Smitty’s way or the highway.
The Falcons braintrust may be an improvement over past Falcons’ braintrust but that is not saying much.
This guy will fit right in with the rest of the yes men.

I’m sure BB will do fine with the Falcons. They didn’t just go out and hire the first coach to come along. There was a lot of thought put into getting this man. He’ll be a good man to have around with his OC experience. Maybe he can bring in some new ideas on how to loosen up the offense and quit being so predictable.

The Packers will repeat.
They survived an amount of injuries that would have reduced Falcons to 4-12.
The Packers with a better GM just plugged in another quality player and didn’t miss a beat.
Even major injuries in Superbowl were overcome.
With the Falcons, an injury to the NICKLE BACK destroyed the defense.
Who picked that sub who could do nothing but grab jersey?
The genius TD.

Mike Smith and Mike Mularkey didn’t look that great on paper when they were hired on and that seems to be going pretty well…..plus this guy isn’t going to be taking over the offense….he’s going to be handed the play book and his job is just to make sure Matt Ryan’s mechanics and mind are in the right place……..obviously TD and staff know who this guy is (TD most likely talked to him at the senior bowl) and liked what they see……I’m sure also the coaching staff wanted someone who could step in and fit the system not someone who wants to come in and run the show

Here’s my two cents…Musgrave was a former QB and didn’t have Matt fundamentally sound. I don’t know what he was doing with Matt in the three years he was with him. Hopefully, Brat can get Matt to improve on his fundamentals, i.e., sliding up in the pocket, footwork for accuracy, deep ball timing, etc. Let’s give the guy a chance.

Hat–You are right on the money, Palmer first requested a trade! I agree with Fortune in that with a tougher schedule and another poor draft, the falcons will finish 8-8 at best. Turner is getting slower and a year older, Snelling is same type runner but without the durability and power of Turner. Without an addition of a fast halfback who can reach the outside corner on sweeps or simple draw plays up the middle for yardage, we are in trouble. On offense: Douglas, Finnergan, running backs Norwood and Smith all need to go. The new offensive line should be Valdez at left tackle, Baker at right tackle, Johnson and blaylock at the guard spots, and Hawley/McCluer at center. That is if Hawley is as good as TD says he is!!! Laughs! i bet he doesn’t ever start at center. On Defense:Peterson disappeared in the second half of the season last year and is no longer a starter in my opinion and should be relegated to back up status. Draft OLB/DE Houston from Georgia for speed and power off the edge that is sorely needed. Draft a BIG run stopper for the middle in later rounds. Use the rest of the draft picks to get Super Fast WR and another slot receiver, then the best players available. Please sign an experienced Cornerback and Safety from free agency, can’t wait on rookies to get experience, we need to win now.

People forget that Palmer was a top 5 qb before getting injured and bengals had a top 10 offense almost every year. Palmer has gotten worse due to injuries and poor ownership decisions. This to me a pretty good pickup considering we could still have musgrave. Its cool. I trust TD. Now just get a new o-line that can pass protect for ryan and get megatron next year in free agency and its smoothe sailing from here on out. We need to draft Pouncey at C this year.

OK, enough of the famous “AJC Falcons Blog Revisionist History!” Carson Palmer did not start his rookie season. His 2nd NFL season (2005) was not his career year (the year he injured his knee). In ‘06 he threw for 4,135 on a career high 575 attempts. Since then, his QB rating has fallen into the mid to low 80% range and his TD production into the mid to low 20’s …

For those of you who think Carson has never been the same since the injury, you’re right, he hasn’t. But, you have to consider, especially as offensive coordinator, it was Brat’s responsibility to see to the development of Carson past the injury. And, he failed miserably. Yes, I do blame Carson for a lot. But, you have to blame Brat a lot, also, since he was the main offensive guy in charge. And, he couldn’t do a thing with the QB after his injury. And, now, he is going to coach your QB’s! I feel sorry for Matt Ryan. I just hope this guy doesn’t get a hold of the play calling for you. You think you have an uninnovative offense now? This signing reminds me a bit of the Paul Boudreau signing. A coach comes from a team that had a bad season and nobody wants him and seem to think that he is automatically a bad coach because of where he came from. Boudreau came from the Rams and a terrible O-line and I think that we can all agree that he has done a fine job with our O-line. Better than the previous coaching legend Alex Gibbs.

Coach Bratkowski is not the Bengals and I think he is going to fit in very well with the rest of the professional classy staff that has this team on the right path.

Also it would seem that if Mularkey had left then Musgrave who was unproven would have been the man to step in as the OC. Perhaps if Mularkey leaves now we have a proven OC who can step in. Seems like an upgrade to me but only time will tell.

Uh, guys…..the QB coach does not call the plays; the job usually involves helping the QBs prep for opponents, and monitoring and supporting technical aspects of the position (foot work, dropback depth, progressions etc). Based on that, I’d say Bratkowski’s experience should allow him to be effective….I’m pretty sure he was NOT the problem in Cincy, when you look at the big picture.

Finally….go back at look at Musgrave’s resume some time; there are a lot of successes AND a lot of failures as well….same as most NFL coaches, including many on Smitty’s current staff. Let’s give Brat a chance……

I don’t mind the negative comments, but some are just trying to be negative instead of speaking from facts. One fact I know is that I never saw a qb coach reverse a Qbs progression, either way Matt Ryan will learn something new and get better. All we need is a consistent running game and a few tuneups on Defense, mainly our defensive line(excluding Abraham) and we are a Superbowl contender. Wow the so called Atlanta Falcons fans would make the baby Jesus cry. So many of you know so little about football. I really wish half of you would just stick to the Braves. I cannot believe how negative the fan base is. This team got obliterated a few seasons ago when their QB and former number 1 draft pick went jail. Then, they hired a new coach. This coach then shaped the team to his image and drafted/hired players to fit his system. That coach then quit in the middle of a season and abandoned the team leaving them with some of the worst contracts in the NFL (Anderson and Ovie come to mind) and crippling the team for years to come. Mike Smith came in and did the impossible. This team has had THREE winning seasons in a row. Smith knows what he is doing. His process works, but it is going to take some time to fix years of bad management, bad drafts, and bad contracts. You people act as if we are the Lions. I cannot believe how many of you crap over this whole season. It ended in disappointment, but it is a testament to this coaching staff that we got as far as we did with all of the holes on this team. You don’t win in the playoffs because you have a good QB, 1 good WR, 1 good TE, 1 good DE, 1 good LB, and 2 pretty good CBs and the rest of your team is stop gap solutions put in place after the worst colossal melt down a team has ever had.

Ya know those of you that don’t like or want to support the Falcons why don’t ya move on to the band wagon for the the Saints or the Packers, any other team that has won, do we have a winning tradition, no not yet, but we finally have the foundation in place to develop it. I for one am not going to change my colors and I will support what this management is doing, as a couple of fans have said he is being brought in to fine tune Ryan not rework him. I truely don’t understand comments like “Falcants”, you might have been able to say that a little as 10 years ago. I truley believe Mr Blank wants a winner for the city and is doing what is needed to bring us a championship. Yes you have every right to criticize the team, but if your gonna do that then at least have a real reason to back up your decision to open your mouth. as I said before if you have the knowledge or the experence then go ahead give your justification if not then let the coaches do what they do. One person ask do coaches make mistakes … absolutley, has TD made some bad choices in the draft sure, the Falcons have made mistake before, one major one comes to mind, initials B.F. every staff makes bad calls, even Mel kiper (I can’t believe they passed on the guy) makes bad decision. What matters is that they learn from it.

What’s the big deal? He’s a QB coach that’s worked with Carson Palmer, Warren Moon, are those bad QBs? Matt Ryan has been here long enough to know what to do and he’s very smart with the football. I doubt a different QB coach will cause him to start throwing picks. As long as he isn’t making dumb decisions then we’ll be fine. A new coach isn’t going to force him to do that so if your a real Falcon fan, just sit back, shut up, and see what happens. This just may take Ryan to the next level.

SAINTS FANS pretending to be Falcon faithful (JSS,Saints Rule,Ringless, etc. etc.) – GO BACK TO THE ‘AINTS BLOG WHERE YOU BELONG!

Did anyone pay attention to Carson’s numbers without the DIVAS on the field? In the two games without T-OCHO to contend with Carson’s posted 90+ passer rates (according to NFL.com). Matty is a GOOD QB, still developing. Matty showed in the PRO BOWL, that he can take you apart with multiple targets (Calvin Johnson, FITZ, Desean, ROWDY). HD and Jenks (even Roddy) dropped many crucial passes along the course of the season. This Bratkowski is just a position coach, NOT the OC!

Here are what I think the important draft/free agency needs are:

1 – WR (James Jones (GB) will be a free agent this year.)
2 – OT (specifically left tackle) Baker struggled all year against speed rushers.
3 – DE (Abe is in the twilight of his career)
4 – RB (Turner will be 31 this year and Norwood needs to go.)
5 – TE
6 – OLB/MLB
7 – OG

Bratkowski isn’t being brought in to call plays, tweak the offense or throw the dang ball. I’m sure he will have a say in game planning if MM lets him, but primarily his job is to get the best out of Matty Ice from a technique perspective. He is a good hire because he was able to take a very raw Carson Palmer and teach him the nuances of the position such that he eventually was considered a top tier QB.

WTF!!! Carson Palmer was considered the most polished NFL ready QB to enter the draft since Peyton Manning. He had been tutored by Norm Chow at SC. What Bratkowski and his offensive co-horts did accomplish was to turn Palmer into a inconsistent mess who had two 4,000 yard plus efforts that were contrasted by 5 years of mystifying efforts! All you have to do is watch the drop and footwork of Palmer at SC and his first half season; then look at the mess he has become!
