Falcons sign Smith to 3-year extension

The Falcons have reached agreement with coach Mike Smith for a three-year contract extension.

“When we hired Mike Smith in 2008, we believed we had found the total package:  a head coach with strong leadership skills and experience and the track record to back it up, and a man of high character and integrity,”  Falcons owner Arthur Blank said.  “In his three seasons with us, Coach Smith has demonstrated all of these characteristics, and then some.

“We are pleased to extend Smitty’s contract, and we are very proud of the way he represents the Falcons through his coaching of our players, in supporting our club’s business goals, and through his caring for our fans and the community.”

Smith, the 14th coach in Falcons history, had had three consecutive winning seasons, a first in club history. His record is 33-15.

“I am looking forward to continuing to build upon the solid foundation we have in place within our organization and on our football team,” Smith said.  “I’d like to personally thank both Arthur and [general manager] Thomas Dimitroff for their outstanding support and guidance.  We are going to continue to work as hard as we can to bring a championship to Falcons fans and to the city of Atlanta.”

The future of the Falcons franchise will be based as much on continuity as anything. Smith is young enough and smart enough that he may just be able to build a dynasty in Atlanta. Well, at least I hope that’s true.

Before the Falcons even considered negotiations with Free Agents, locking down Coach Smith was an absolute requirement.

Kudos to the team at Flowery Branch. Coach Smith is a winner and a damn fine leader of men. I’m proud to have him as our Coach.

First Pro coach for the Falcons since Dan Reeves. Good move. The talent on this club gets better every year, and it’s not by accident.

Smart move! Guess Dimitroff will be next, and rightfully so. All the hate on Mularkey is troublesome, especially when continuity has been Smith’s watchword since arriving in ATL. The QB coach hire is vital, as far as Ryan’s further development is concerned. Losing the OC could be even worse for Matt at this stage–you just never know–it could turn out to be the best thing that’s ever happened. Either way, we need Matt to be challenged, pushed even harder to improve the areas where his game is weaker. Hopefully, the new QBs coach will help him continue to grow. If MM goes to TN, we’d better have his replacement on speed dial especially if we intend to radically change our playbook….

Matt Ryan has no challenges or challengers on the roster, Dimitroff and Smith made sure off that when they drafted him.

Chris Redmon and John Parker Wilson are absolute jokes as back ups. They are not worthy as UFL Starters let alone NFL. He has no sense of urgency or pressure to get better. Once Mularkey leave the excuses will be he has a New Offensive Coachhing Staff!

Smith had one year remaining on his current deal, he should have been extended on two years for a total of three years. If Muklarkey gets hired as a head coach Smith will have no one to blame for his mediocre offenses and read and react defenses.

The franschise fans are pitful if winning regular season games three years in a row are the measuring stick for success. It breeds mediocrity! If the people in my business thought like that I would fire all of them!! As a 40 year Falcon Fan it burns me up to see this uphoria and overhype for someone who has not won 1 playoff game.

Jim Mora is an idiot but his team played in the NFC Championship game bottom line. Gregg Knapp was an awful OC but the team playes in the NFC Cahnmpionship game. The NFL like any other business is bottom line results , you do not see Franchises like Pittsburgh or Green Bay happy to win in the regular season both organizations expect, not wish to play in Super Bowls!!

What a coincidence!

According to a commercial I saw last night for a “male enhancement product,” former Dallas Cowboys Coach Jimmy Johnson has just gotten a 3-inch extension.

It is often said these things always come in Threes.

Just exactly how did TD and smith make sure there was no one to “challenge” Ryan? Exactly how many teams have QB’s that are considered starters? I can think of one, and they are already offering one “kolb” to be traded. No one is “statisfied” with where we are, but it is sure a lot better than when smith arrived, and I guess 31 teams are disappointed every year, aren’t they.

They should fire all the other coaches except the special teams coach. This team is a joke, Turner and Gonzalez can not take this team any furhter, Signing D. Robinson was a bust, look at what he did one interception and that white guy from GB beat him on a TD pass, shameless. They need a stud RB, and a few DL, plus some others. Look for other teams in the Division to get better like TB and Carolina. No one is afraid of the Falcons. They will not do as good next year.

That’s great news!! All we need now is a new defenseive coordinator!! My fellow Falcon fans need to unite and help me start a grass roots campaign to accomplish two important changes for our team. Hire a new defensive coordinator! We all know the top defenses have more exotic blitzes, complex coverages, and well disguised intentions. Van Gorder’s schemes are vanilla and we are tired of seeing our team picked apart by the likes of Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees.
Second, make a serious bid for Nnamdi Asomugha. Free agent corners like him are very rare and he can immediately improve our weak secondary. He’s better than all or corners from the last 10 years put together and we must jump on this opportunity.
So combine your voice with mine and do what I did – post your requests for these two important changes on the official Falcons website and pass the word on. We can make a difference if we all push for the same things and make them hear us. These 2 changes could bring us a ring next year!

@Opie i agree with you. yeah we’ll get some sour pickles thrown our way for believing such but you are right. This breeds mediocrity. Is a company happy when they turn a profit every fiscal year? Sure but they are also looking at ways to expand, etc…they arent settling for just decent profit margins. This org has never had 3 winning seasons in a row so this is a big deal to them BUT it also needs to be known that we’ve just hit mediocrity where we were once in the doldrums. There is still a lot of work to do and settling/being happy just for a winning season will not get the job done.

Ryan definitely doesnt have any true challengers and the kid has great tangibles, but the kid also has a noodle arm. All the All-stars saw it at the Pro Bowl. I saw Manning and Rivers laughing when he threw that ball to Fitzgerald that almost didnt make it. That says a lot. The kid is not elite yet and we need to stop making him think he is. He has a lot he can improve on and it can start with him not looking like a deer in the headlights when he’s banged around a bit.lol
No one is afraid of this team at all. Something has to change if they wanna compete next year b/c a lot of teams are going to be good.

all we’re saying is all you chicken littles with the sky is falling, are being a little overreactive over just one game, and yes it really stunk, but really we need a few more play makers on defense and offense, and we are there, and that doesn’t include a new QB, or someone to ” challenge” him. critical is DE another WR, then maybe another CB, OLB. have you forgotten that we beat the saints, ravens, and packers this year. this team isn’t that far off.

Unless Blank spends money on FA this team will not get better in the future,it will win a few games here and there, but never a championship.Who cares about 13-3 in regular season, if you can’t win in the playoffs! Atlanta fans have been fooled long enought, its time for the Falcons to make moves to bring a superbowl to the Atlanta fans,my god its only been 44 years and no championships, and very few playoffs wins in that span of time.Pathetic!

The Falcons are becoming a solid organization that plays consistent fundamental football. I’ve been a season ticket holder for 5 years, the view from the thrid row of the upper deck is positive. With that demoralizing playoff loss aside, We are generally hard nosed and smart, which are tributes to the head coach and GM. Most of Dimitroff’s picks have panned out with the exception of two very critical 1st round selections at the point of attack and the point of protection. Peria Jerry and Sam Baker. Bakers is slow and injury prone. Jerry missed most of his rookie season and couldn’t beat out Corey Peters (who did step up as a 3rd round rookie, despite what MEl Kipper said at the time). Toss in Jamal Anderson (#8 pick) and Harvey Dahl’s degression this year and it should be clear that we are not dominant in the trenches. Yes we had a good running game, but at the end of the year we were far from dominat in the red zone, and Ryan was never comfortable (That’s you Baker) . The falcons were not pushed around like the zone blocking crap of the Mora era, but we didn’t match up well with very physical teams. Smitty likes to pound it and I love that, but give him the grid-iron bruisers to execute the smash mouth style. Pass protection has got to be better, and the pressure up the middle has been weak since Grady Jackson was cut in the middle of a season. Above all, you can’t afford to have 1st round duds in the NFL and contend for a championship (see Rich McKay). Dimitroff has found some gems in rounds 2-6, but aside from Ryan his top picks haven’t produced.

take it from me,

I guess my butt must be smarter than your head, because I don’t see harping or blaming the current ownership for the past 40 years. What I do see is an owner, GM, coach dedicated to winning and they have produced over the last 3 years. Have you noticed that TD has gone into free agency or trade every year… you say the winning seasons don’t matter, tell that to carolina… you think they would do a straight trade team for team, mgmt for mgmt, owner for owner? In aminute. Everybody is blaming the OC, funny how now 3 teams want to interview him…. What first round duds has TD picked? Jerry got injured, weatherspoon got injured, so we don’t know if they are duds or not. Ryan certainly isn’t a dud.

all the complaints about picking Baker, I’m not a big fan of Bakers either, but the point is, we had just drafted a rookie QB, needed a LT, only the LT’s were flying off the board, so TD moved up and took what he thought was the best LT left, I’ve heard him say he wasn’t happy about doing that, but he had to.

otrain,
Dahl will probably be gone after this year, with either Johnson or Hawley taking his place. Jerry is coming off a knee injury, If he recovers then he’ll probably work out, if not, don’t see how you can blame TD for that.

Everyone thought moore was a bust, what about now? Everyone was griping about Corey Peters during the draft, how about now? played pretty good as a rookie.

I do question Dunta, not impressed with his play, but again he’s better than what we had.

I listen to TD tonight on the radio, he said they have a list of free agents, they are looking at, that they look at over 3000 players for the draft. These guys know what they are doing.

also heard an interview of Larry Fitzgerald(spelling?). Anyway, what a class act, and probably the best WR in the league. He said he has enjoyed playing in Arizona, but he wants to win. Shame the Cards will probably put the franchise tag on him. wouldn’t it be great to have him here? wonder how roddy would like being the #2 WR? talk about a dream team!

WE NEED TO GET RID OF GRIMES THAT FOOL IS LIKE 5′8 TO SMALL OR KEEP HIM AS A NICKEL BACK. Get RID OF WILLIAMS HE IS OLD AND HAS A BUSTED KNEE. We need to sign a veteran free agent corner plus we have franks. Get rid of trey Lewis and Jamal Anderson. We need to draft Kyle Rudolph in the first and Titus Young in the Second. A sped back in the third and the rest d lineman and linebackers.

aizdaman,

good suggestions, other than the Grimes comment, first don’t think he is a fool, second, I think he would be a great nickle back. Williams probably won’t be back, I doubt TD can get the picture of him missing Brees over and over agian in the backfield out of his mind.

Good lord you would think the Grimes is too short nonsense would stop after his play this year. Besides NFL.com list him as 5′10 on the Pro bowl roster which is avg height for the postion :) They must be including his 87″ vert.

James Jones torched him in the play off game because he is to physical and grimes to soft, When are they gonna play that fool Lawrence Sidbury and cut the clown Michael Palmer and get a real tight end. Cut will Stivek and play Garret Reynolds more. Brian Finneran does not deserve to be on the payroll and Norwood has to go. Resign Snelling. I wanna See Robert James and Spencer Adkins play more instead of that Coy Wire fool.
