Curtis Compton ccompton@ajc.com

Falcons coach Mike Smith did not make any excuses for the teams poor showing against the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s what he had to say:

OPENING STATEMENT: Obviously, it’s extremely hard in this league to get the outcome that you want when we play the type  of football that we played today. It was very uncharacteristic in terms of turnovers, proteching the football and winning third down on defense. It was a tough night for our football team. We had way too many mistakes. We ran into a real hot quarterback, playing at a high level. We obviously had a real tough time stopping them. Their offense did a very good job. Then when you turned the offense over four times and have five sacks, it’s not going to be pretty. We thought that the first quarter of the game went well. As we got into the second quarter it started to kind of go away from us. We had an opportunity ,in the third quarter on third down and 13  with them backed up, and we didn’t get a stop. We couldn’t spin the momentum. Again my hats off to them. They are moving on. We’ll be a better team and learn from this experience. Everyday, if your win or lose, it’s a learning experience. This is something that we will learn from. With that, I’ll open it up for questions.

ON THE INTERCEPTIONS RIGHT AT THE END OF THE HALF: “That was a tough play. We were right at the edge of a long field goal attempt. . . We wanted to try to get it in five more yards for the range that we had set for our field goal kicker. It was a throw where the guy jumped the route and ended up really turning the tide right before the half. . . . then it really started to snowball from that point.”

(DID GET THIS QUESTION): Again, I would not Mark. There were numerous opportunities to get the guy on the ground. That’s a very good quarterback, a very good offense. Our intent was to get him on the ground. We had some free runners, but we didn’t convert. I would have never have imagined that happening. It was not very characteristic of the way that we want to play football. That was not the way we played football all season long.

ON THE PLAY OF THE SECONDARY: “Well, we gave up way too many yards obviously. Touchdown passes. We had some penalties that hurt us. Until I watch the tape it’s going to be really difficult  . . .  but obviously when you give up the number of points and the passing yardage that we gave up today, we didn’t play our best game. That’s very obvious. I don’t know if we tackled as cleanly as we needed to. It was a very discouraging evening for our football team. For our organization, but we will come back from it. I can assure you of that.

DID YOU ALL MISS BRIAN WILLIAMS: “Brian Williams is our starting nickel back. When a guy is hurt, the next guy has to come in and make the plays. You want to have all of our players out there if possible. He wasn’t there. I thought that Chris did some nice things when they were out there  tonight.  Until I watch the tape, I’m not going to make any judgments  on how individuals played.”

ON WHAT THEY DID WELL: I think we did a pretty good job stopping the run. We did a pretty good job this week preparing for the run. They used the same game plan they had the last time we played them. They made the plays when they had to make them and we didn’t. That’s  what happened in the ball game. They were the better team in the ball game tonight.

WAS RODGERS BETTER THAN LAST TIME? “Yes he was. Aaron Rodgers was better than he was the last time we played them and we weren’t as good.

ON WEEMS KICKOFF RETURN: “It was a big play by Eric and our special teams. Then we got put back out there on the field defensively and we didn’t get a stop. It was one of those 80-yard drives  .  .  . we didn’t get it stopped. You can’t go out there and play that many snaps in a football game and think that you are going to be stronger and you’re gong to win the fourth quarter.

ON RYAN’S INTERCEPTIONS: “I’m not going to comment  on bad throw, bad decision until I’ve had the opportunity to really watch the tape and study what the coverage was. I think I know what it was, but until I watch the tape I’m going to hold onto any type of judgment.”

THE FOURTH AND ONE ON THE FIRST TD DRIVE: “Our philosophy this season on fourth down, especially in the red zone, we feel we have a pretty good chance to make it statistically. We did that and it ended up turning into a touchdown down instead of a field goal. We you are facing an impressive offense like that you’ve got to score touchdowns. You can’t get into a field goal kicking contest because that offense right now is playing very effectively.”

ON HIS POST GAME SPEECH TO THE TEAM: “Generally speaking, I know they are disappointed. I’m disappointed. We didn’t like the way the game went and that we would learn from it. The important thing is that we learn from what took place. I also told them that they need to realize that even with as bad as they feel right now, they have to remember that there is a whole body of work that we put out there this year and we can’t forget that either.”

WAS THE WEATHER THIS WEEK A FACTOR: “No excuses. We’re not going to make any excuses. I thought our preparation was good. All week, when we came to practice we were focused. We just did not play Atlanta Falcons football. The way the Atlanta Falcons have played all season long. I think the statistical bear that out from the score on the scoreboard to what happened to us offensively and defensively.

Kudos to Coach Smith. This is the right response (regardless of the questions) and the right attitude. In the pre-season, this team wasn’t predicted to go to the Super Bowl. They weren’t even predicted to win the NFC South by most people. Some didn’t even have them making the playoffs.

2010 was another step FORWARD in the process. I know everyone with the organization is disappointed about tonight, as I am, but they’ll look at the big picture as Coach Smith suggested.

As long as this franchise is steeped in the philosophy of Play Not To Lose, they will NEVER win when it truly matters.

As long as this football team is chained to a Martyball Offense that has NEVER won in the postseason, they will NEVER win when it truly matters.

As long as this football team continues to play in these vanilla SoftWillie-like Zones (which are NOT BVG’s true 4-3 defense, it’s Mike Smith’s lame Jaguars’ defense), they will NEVER win when it truly matters.

This team must divest itself of Mike Mularkey, hire Josh McDaniels, and tell Mike Smith to stay the hell away from the offense and stop messing it up with his play-not-to-lose mentality.

This team must allow BVG to coach defense like he did at Georgia, and NOT like Mike Smith did in Jacksonville.

If they don’t make these changes, then this team will NEVER win when it matters most.

Just like Marty Schottenheimer’s teams NEVER won when it mattered most.

Hey pigeon fans. You took GREAT JOY in the Saints defeat last week. Seattle beat a banged up Saints team, at home, by 5 points. The Packers made my year by shutting up you arogant pigeon fans. They exposed you for the fraud you are, #1 seed, loses by 27 at home, that’s a true BEAT DOWN. As an NFC South rep, I as actually going to root for you to go all the way, but you took great joy in celebrating the Saints loss. So I broke out my voodoo doll. It’s true, Dirty Bird can’t fly with a broken wing. What goes around comes around.

Thanks for the good season coach Smith. We are all disappointed by the loss but there were sure a lot of good times this season. The future of Falcons football is bright but we have got to fix that 3rd down defense. It was an Achilles heel all season long and we got embarrassed by it tonight.

Why are Atlanta teams always on the wrong end of these stupid stats?

Aaron Rodgers’ 86.1 completion percentage (31-of-36) at Atlanta is an NFL single-game postseason record for a QB with 35-plus attempts.

It all starts with the fans. Did you notice how well the Packers’ fans travel? Were you watching them in the stands, and the attention they paid to the game. Fans that have to be told to buy tickets, come early, rise up, get loud are not true football fans, and the players notice that. The game was lost in the 3rd quarter not when Rodgers scored, but when the fans left. Thats when any chance of a miracle vanished. Don’t be ashamed of the Falcons for they were beaten by a better team, you were told that all week. You need to be ashamed for yourselves for you are some of the poorest fans in the NFL.

Falcons play football games like they are afraid … must get a killer instinct in the running game (with FASTER more explosive alterative to Burner Turner). He’s a great back, but needs help. Snelling isn’t the answer — let Gatrell Johnson loose. Also, you need more deep threat receivers like the packers, harder hitting line backers like clay matthews, and playmakers on the team. Stop wasting money on weenies — get players. OC and DC should be fired tonight. With them, you will never succeed. need more aggressive play calling. And the players dont need to be coddled any longer – they are men, who play like boys. Up your coaching, and the Falcons might have won the game tonight.

Ouch. That hurt. A lot.

EVERYBODY (except possibly Weems) underperformed. It all ended on the pick six. The entire team, coaching staff and fanbase went into VISIBLE shellshock. The brutal shortcoming of the otherwise great regular season is that the team only really faced a big deficit in one game (Eagles loss). The moment they were down two scores, they clearly were emotionally unequipped to deal with the situation.

In the offseason, they will need to address the following:
- opening things up so Ryan can develop. He’s a great leader but isn’t getting enough ground testing with a more wide open playbook. I called the pick six b/c I knew where the ball was going before they even got out of the huddle. While the Ryan hatred often annoy me, in their critique of his now-suddenly-worrisome forays into the postseason lies a legitimate kernel of truth: this Falcons team knows how to construct a winning offense but it doesn’t adjust well in the playoff environment.
- getting a defensive difference maker. The Falcons D was ATROCIOUS tonight but they did exhibit overall improvement this year. What’s missing is the difference maker. GB has Matthews, CHI has Urlacher, PIT has Polamalu….the Falcons need a guy like that.

ATL Observer

January 16th, 2011
2:02 am

- The fans need to create a big time environment from DAY ONE. This team played so well at home…..until the Saints and Packers games. Why? I think the fans are usually fairly apathetic and, strangely, the team gets used to it and comfortable in that environment. Whereas the Steelers, Pats, Packers, etc. don’t sense anything unusual about a “playoff atmosphere.” EVERY home game has that atmosphere.
- while you address these things…don’t get TOO crazy and blow everything up. While I’m barfing a little using the Saints as an example, when they experienced some letdowns after some inflated expectations in light of ‘06, they didn’t panic and completely overhaul the operation. They made some defensive tweaks, added some role players and voila, Super Bowl. They need to avoid being the Eagles (stable enough to contend but never getting the missing pieces for a title) but also avoid being the Redskins (so much instability has made them a joke).

In time, I’ll have fond memories of the season but for now…….ouch.

Seemed like Van Gorder had no answer on defense. Sometimes a KO Return fo a TD hurts the defense more than helps the offense. The preceding drive was a 80 yarder. We score without the offense going on the field and then they drive another 85 yards and score. That in essence was the turning point. The Defense was work nout . Go Dawgs

im dissapointed with the results but the falcons have to get off the field on third down to much zone defense when you rush 3 and drop 8 back in coverage to cover 5 players you should be able to disrupt a pass i saw alot of watching the qb instead of the receivers and the 4 or 5 times the dline got to almost sack rodgers they missed the tackle . I dont think the packers are any better 11-6 they played better tonight and atlanta didn’t cover well when you have 3rd and 6 or 8 dont play off nearly ten yards you give them the first down. The 2 interceptions killed the atttitude of the falcons and the opening score of the 2nd half. But its football anyopne can get beat. Hopefully next year they play better and the fans didn’t lose the game for atlanta that’s stupid .They don’t give out free tickets they cost money it must be nice to follow your team but not all of us can afford to do it. Atlanta is still my team i hope to see them do better next year! Im proud of them 3 winnig seasons in a row. GreenBay had over a decade of losing until favre came in 1992 atlanta has good coaching and a owner who wants to win unlike rankin smith who was just about making the money for his family. The players are an elite group who has bonded well. They will get better as a team. What this team need is an offensive coordinator that is consistent and and can help the player adjust during the game. I beleive Mac would be a good position coach. Every game we have lost during the past two years were due to in effective coaching.

Wow. Couldn’t finish watching the game it was so ugly. BugKiller was right, the performance tonight was way too buttoned-down. McDaniels may be the ticket for the offense but the flaws in the defense were obvious.

For having two weeks to prepare, BVG was out-coached and out-schemed. I feel bad for Gonzalez more than I do for Smith. There ought to be a real air-clearing tomorrow in Suwanee.

Did Dominique Franks replace Owens in the nickel position becuae I didn’t watch the whole game. It seems the he just keep on regressing as the season went on from a starting nickel back to just primarily a speacial team player and I feel his job is gonna be on the line. The play where I thought that shift the momentum was the illegal contact by owens after getting the sack on 3rd and 3 that could of been either 14 to 10 or 14 to 7 had crosby missed a chip shot. Also the play by Matty Ice just wasn’t as good eiter with two ints with one taking back to the house. Despite this an overall a good season especially in the third year I just wish for a better outcome and I’ll be rooting for them next season or 2012 season if there is a lockout to beyond.

The 24 point turn around right before half did really destroyed the team. Driving in to tie at 21 and an interception…GB goes down the field and scores. Then the missed opportunity for a FG on the pick six was devistating… They scored 14 and we missed 10…. The defense having to be on the field around 30 plays between their first score our runback TD and their next long drive foe a td killed the defense physically. They took us out of the running game quickly. For some reason we could not make a tackle on Rogers in the Back field….What is with those “Ole” tackles. Is that lack of fundamentals or lack of coaching? Van Gorder had no answers… Rogers was probably as hot as anyone has ever been but we certainly helped him look that good with Van Gorders defense.

24 point turn around before half killed the team. Instead of going up 21-14 or 24-14, we ended up 28-14 behind after both of those interceptions…Van Gorder’s defense was terrible.. They really helped Rogers look great. The return for a td killed the defense after GB’s first TD.. They had two long drives that the defense had only the short rest between drives of a total of nearly 30 plays. Time of possession or lack of possession killed the Falcons plus poor defense, and a few questionable play calls…Total crash of the whole team.

OK…The pain of this embarassment has subsided. For the REAL Falcons fans here…let’s talk about the glaring needs for 2011 (provided there is one). Here where I think we need upgrades:
LT – Sam Baker is not a TRUE LT. This year, he cost us much yardage in false start and holding penalties because he was too often getting beat of the edge.
OG – Can the 2010 draft picks step up next year or should we look for Dahl’s/McClure’s future replacements in free agency?
WR – Roddy needs a speedy compliment with great hands. HD was surprisingly ineffective and inconsistent in his role out of the slot.
DE – When will Sidbury be ready to step into 55’s role?
RB – Is Gartrelle Johnson a keeper? Just like WR, we need a speedy, aggressive compliment to 33.
DB – I think we have the talent here, but maturity is an issue.

Thoughts?

You have to give a ton of credit to A Rod for eluding the falcons’ pressure tonight just Lon enough to allow a receiver to get open. Trust me, I am a Broncos fan and Kyle Orton wouldve been sacked at least 8 times if it were him behind center.

Overhaul Now (trust me)

January 16th, 2011
5:52 am

They can be fixed but Blank will CERTAINLY NOT do what it takes to fix them. Could the young up and coming NFC Champs need a major overhaul already? YES!!!

1. Either Mularky or Matty Ice (lol) or both need to GO! The ultra-conservative play calling will never get you past the FIRST ROUND of the playoffs. These plays are called either because the Mularky knows no other way and cannot adapt or because he knows that Ryan is very very iffy on long balls and tough reads. Given that Mularky HAD a rep for offensive innovation before coming to the Falcons; I would say that he knows Ryan’s limitations and has been trying to prevent the type of interception fest that went on last night. The third rather intriguing option is that Mularky has been INSTRUCTED by Mike Smith to call the plays that way to protect Ryan, in which case I can’t really blame Mularky.

2.Van Gorder has got to go. It quickly became obvious in this game, as in several recent ones that the only way the birds can stop a high powered O, or a hot QB is to Blitz, Blitz, Blitz! Everyone watching, including the announcers could see that we needed to blitz except BVG. Unless once again he was following Smith’s orders.

3. We obviously need personnel upgrades ALL OVER THE FIELD!

I could go on and on. But without the first two changes, other changes, including player personnel would be futile. Mr. Blank is enamored with his coaching staff and QB due to the moderate success that they have had. So this NEW FALCONS DEBACLE will continue for at least another three years. Then we will start all over again.

Rise Up! Go Birds! Blah, blah…..blah.

I wonder if you Falcon fans understand how really bad you got beat in this game. I’ve heard lots a noise about not having your starting 5th DB available. Wonder if you realize that not only did you get beat, but beat bad, by a team that has their starting halfback, tight-end, right guard, middle linebacker, outside linebacker, safety and cornerback all on IR for most of the year. In addition, GB has 4 backup linebackers in IR also. So please don’t complain about injuries to us. Just realize that our team was much deeper and better prepared then yours.

Under performed, thats a understatement. More like we did not show up. More like as a number one seed, we thought we had won the super bowl already. More like we were exposed, like the frauds we are. More like, we hope one year, before 2050 to win a super bowl for our long suffering fans. More like one day we will have a Lombardi trophy like our NFC south teams, new Orleans saints and Tampa bay bucks. As I see it, the frauds got lucky against my bucks two times this season, now the luck ran out on the falcons, and it’s fans are going crazy. The bucks will be the team to beat in the future, not your team.

We learned that the Falcons were pretenders. Definitely not deserving of a top seed in the NFC and certainly no in the upper tier of the NFL. The combination of no pass rush and weaknesses in the secondary is lethal against the better teams in the league. Like Green Bay. Falcons needs are pretty clear – defensive lineman that can get pressure on the QB, people that can cover in the secondary and another running back. Norwood needs to go. It’s questionable Turner’s future is. His lack of speed is a problem – allows defenses to pile up in the middle and take away the run. The bottom line is that this team is nowhere near as good as we hoped they were. It was a total embarrassment on the national stage last night.

Bottom line – Falclowns are a good regular season team and a TURRIBLE (Charles Barkley) playoff team. #1 seeds do not lose in the first round and get HUMILIATED in their DOME! You embarrassed the NFC south, you played weak and were FRAUDS all year….at least the SAINTS won SB44….but, your jealousy has been reduced to slamming a great city vs. looking at your own pathetic organization and lack of tradition, integrity and identity as a team…..you could not stay classy, much less spell the word….Who Dat – You Ain’t Dat…

Atlanta is just not as good as Green Bay. If not for a fumble by Aaron Rodgers on the 1 yard line the Falcons would have lost the first time they played.

If you think Green Bay is tough this year, wait until next year when they get all their guys back. I think they have 7 starters on Injured Reserve.

They still have to win two more games this year but Green Bay is on the verge of big things in the years to come if they don’t win it all this year.

I’m still wondering how the hell we can put extreme heat (aka blitzing) on another great QB, Drew Brees and forget it last night? Rush 3 or 4 against a QB like Rogers? Even as dumb as I am I think I could figure out a way to put more pressure on Aaron Rogers. OOPS, I forgot: rust a few and stay back and prevent pass completions…that’s it! Look at Roger’s stats, he sure was held to only a few dozen yards (per pas, that is). boy, that Zone D works like a charm.

The Falcons were putting pressure on Rodgers. They were just whiffing. Rogers has mobility that most QB’s don’t have. He’s elusive and has great footwork.

This is a special team that need a few additions and it showed. That’s the good thing about losing figuring out what needs and adjustments for next season. I going to say this and I have been saying this since day 1 when we draft Matt Ryan. Matt Ryann needs to work on his arm strength. I notice his first year he can not make the deep throws. Everytime our receivers have a 2 or 3 step separation on deep throws or a sideline throw they have to come back for the ball. This give the defender a chance to catch up to the ball for interception are a change to bat the ball down. Once again Mike Jenkins had 3 steps on the defender and the ball should have been thrown over his head, he actually had to come back to the ball. And the defender was able to catch up and make an interception. That was the key play to the game. Look at some of the past interceptions throughout his career here in Atlanta and you see for yourself. The times when Rowdy White has his man beat by 2 or 3 steps on the deep routes and how he has to come back for the ball. To sum it up the falcons will never be able to spread the defense because teams know they do not have worry. That’s why if we get behind in a game we would never be able to catch up. We do not have big play potential

Real Falcon Fan, if you truly believe that the Falcon’s beat themselves, you were not watching the same game as the rest of America was. It is one thing to get beat by 7 or 3 points and point to one or two mistakes which changed the game completely around. When you get beat by 27 points, at home, you didn’t beat yourselves. You got the s**t kicked out of you. I’ve lived with this saying for about 20 years. It was something said by a sportscaster, it goes like this; “I may be a homer, but I am not an idiot.” The Falcon’s got straight out beat up, down and all around. They wouldn’t have won yesterday if they brought their A game.

Special and more sophisticated teams with balance on both sides of the ball win the Super Bowls. The Falcons are almost their, their defense still has some holes to fill. Aaron Rodgers is now, and will be considered a Elite QB after last nights performance. Falcons have a little more work to do….Be Patient the Falcons are still going thru growing pains. Greenbay had alot of injuries and beat us with 2nd string players for the most part. Van Gorder and Mularkey got schooled too not just the players. We were ther stepping childs for Greenbay. Bad thing is they’ll show the thrashing on ESPN that Greenbay as highlight films.
We have got to get a better RB than the one we have now. Michael Turner doesnt cut back, run with vision and has no break away speed. Yeah he’s fat and big legs but doesnt get big gains. Tony Gonzalez needs to retire folks, he still hasnt won a playoff game.
O.K. so now we have had a winning record the last 3 years. We won our Division which was great but next year the Saints and Tampa will have something to say about that. Great Defenses win Super Bowls and ours is sub par at best.
We have got to get better CB’s by trading or drafting which either and be able to play 1 on 1 more cause this zone stuff isnt working Van Gorder.
Watch Greenbay and New Orleans on film and maybe you can learn something. Greenbay is going to the Super Bowl folks, their a class act with a complete football team even without their starters. We got beat in the trenches on both sides yesterday.
Their front 4 played awesome and our OL couldnt pick up the stunts, no check offs, no screens and no execution. We only won in our Special Teams which was a non factor later on.
I hvent given up on the Falcons but you gave up yesterday, no effort, no focus, no pride and the score proved that. Go get your 43,000.00 pay checks for participation and watch the rest of the playoff’s on the tube.
Those are real players and real men in the playoffs, cash your checks sit by the fire, drink some hot chocolate, cuddle with your wives and make your plans on going on vacation.
I dont want to watch us get embarrased on t.v. and atleast you saved us from that.

And does not have it, I just wanted to be easy on theese fans because when I mentioned this 1, 2 years ago they were in denial. He does not have it and will never have it. The Packers won that game, they deserved the W. We simply did not show up to play last night. However, the Packers fans that were in attendance last night were disgusting. Of all the NFL games I have ever attended, that was a group of the rudest, most crass, and embarassingly disrespectful NFL fans I have ever seen. And that is saying something given that we host Saints fans once a year. Green Bay fans have nothing to be proud of. I hope they learn to keep it classy. They have a long way to go.

I agree with Coach Smith–since 2007, the Falcons have been adding building blocks to this team. Arthur Blank cares about this team and this city(unlike Rankin Smith and his family.) Mr. Blank has gone out and hired us a great coach and front office when we had none.

Over the last three years, the Falcons have put together consecutive winning seasons(something the organization had never done before) and two playoff appearances. Yes, last night was difficult but as Mike Smith said the Falcons will learn from this and go after players who will fill those holes so visible last night.

Great teams aren’t built overnight but over time. This is just another step in the process, a hard one to swallow but still a step forward.

ouch – that did hurt. The interception before half was the backbreaker but we would have lost anyway. What’s up with the ole pass rushers. To me, that was the game. BVG got free rushers but Arod just slipped them time after time. So the BVG didn’t know what to do but drop to a zone which I fully believe even he didn’t think would work. I have a bad feeling about the falcons going forward. You only get setups like this year so many times and to get routed when you had everything going for you does not bode well for the future. Smith and Ryan are the future but the psyche of getting smashed as a #1 seed at home may never be forgotten. I see some missed playoffs and maybe a wild card loss for this team over the next several years. But they appear to just not be tough enough in the trenches to ever win a major playoff game. Hope I’m wrong. Go Braves!!!!

I knew it we are still in denial about Matt’s inability to strow deep routes. Matt is not the answer and other teams know this. That’s why it is important to get another running back for the type of quarterback we have. The running back for this type of offense for this quarterback is important. We have to play ball control offense we can not have a high scoring offense when we have a quarterback that can not I repeat can not make the deep throws.

Also, Falcons fans, please stop saying BS such as “we underperformed” this game. What actually happened was you guys over-performed all season. Everything about your offensive and defensive system screams mediocrity. You had how many “Pro Bowl” players from a defense ranked 16th… That should never happen.
Turner, while leading the league in carries is a distant 3rd in overall yardage and 31st in the league for yards/attempt.
When ranking qb’s, Ryan is never ranked higher than 9th in the league for Percentage, overall yards, passer rating, or yards/game. Best thing he has is TD to INT ratio.
You have a team focused on playing to not lose and to make fewer mistakes than their opponent. Which is fine, it will get you to the playoffs. But you are not designed to come from behind or to stretch a lead. That does not work in this league, in which the rules regarding how receivers can be covered, encourages the big play. You don’t believe me? Look at what happened to the Titans after that 10-0 start. They crumbled. They also had a much better defense and more explosive running game.
Facts is facts.

Thomas Dimitrioff needs to evaluate our Secondary. Safety- not sure the guy’s name but he just sat back there for the most part, never saw him double up on WR’s on the left or rightside of the field. He missed on a cpl tackles and didnt see much run support frm the safety. (Need a better Safety) trade him!
CB- Owens where did we get that guy? Got to be the worst CB in the league, they threw on him all day…could not anyone teach this guy the fundamentals on coverage? maybe Deion Sanders can. (Trade him)
I’m 53 and can play better than that.
OFFENSE- Michael Turner highest RB in the league. What is so special about him? No break away speed, no cut backs, and no vision. Dimitrioff needs a true RB and not a FB go out and get you 1.
WIDE RECIEVER- Roddy White cannot do everything. nope cannot. We need another i mean another very good reciever thats a veteran reciever cause Douglas and Jenkins moreso Douglas needs to be traded.
TIGHT END- Time for Tony Gonzalez to retire……… Might be good during the season but you can do nothing in the playoffs whether it be now or later…you’ve got go.
OFFENSIVE LINE- Are they just robots out there or can they not do checkoffs? Greenbay killed us on stunts and one time the CB blitzed off of the reciever and the tackle never picked him up. Those are fundamentals that are taught in highschool folks.
Van Gorder just like he did at Georgia never makes adjustments after the half. Boy you got SCHOOLED by Greenbay’s OC didnt ya?
Mularkey (OC of the year) maybe that trophy was given out too soon. Greenbay’s OC got overlooked on this one. Greenbay had alot of injuries and their OC made adjustments and look what he produced. We lose some starters and cant tie our shoe laces.
Maybe you guy’s should send your trophies up to Greenbay. All in all these Falcons are still 5-7 players away from beimg able to survive a 1st round loss in the playoff’s. Gonzalez, Finneran, Abraham is old now and are more proned to injuries than the younger players and must evaluate their future in football.
Van Gorder must look for immediate help in the Secondary to prevent this in the future, Mularkey has got to find a really decent RB and WR too take pressure off the other players by trade or draft otherwise we’ll end up just like this next year.

“I’d like to congradulate the Greenbay Packers on the win against us. They out coached us in everyway and even if you take away our 4 turnovers it still couldve been 28-7. They are a class organization with great fans. Good luck in the NFC Championship.”

Thanks Rmike, I’m telling you, the Falcons are NOT that far off and you’re laying a foundation with a franchise QB. A good many Packers fans forget that it took Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren 4 full years to put together a Championship team back in the early 90’s. Your guys will be back. They’re just too good of a team…a good team that had a really bad night. That stuff happens…it doesn’t lessen the pain to hear it but … it happens. The Falcons are a good team and a class organization. The Green Bay televisions stations had quite a lot of coverage from Atlanta leading up to this game and one re-occurring note was the ‘good form’ of the Falcons organization. Being a Cowboy fan, I have no room to talk but it obvious the Falcons are lacking a couple of things. To really that advantage of the Georgia Dome, the Falcons need to address team speed. Outside of Roddy White maybe, the offensive skill players do not have speed that will scare anybody. Harry Douglas has speed but either he can’t get open or he is not fully recovered from his knee injury. The Falcons are built to play football outside.

The second thing they need is related to first thing; they need playmakers and playmakers are usually players with blazing speed. I know this is hindsight 20/20, but the loss of Norwood was big for the Falcons. Norwood in the passing game would have been a big mismatch for any linebacker in the league. I know the guy can’t stay on the field, but the Falcons need to pick-up faster running back to back-up Snelling. Yes, I said Snelling because he should be the starter.

Matty Ice fits, his arm is iced. We are not looking at this as a problem. It is rediculas for our receivers to have 2 or 3 steps on a defender on deep routes and Matty Ice can’t get them the ball. That interception in the inzone proves it. Go back and look at all the interceptions he has thrown in his NFL career, he cannot throw the deep routes wake up an smell the coffee. You are right we need to get a better running back for the quarterback we have. The running back needs to be a franchise running back not the quarterback that we have now.l

We beat you and you beat us this year so what! Youre not sure where Greenbay will be next year as i dont know where the Falcons will be. They beat us and you can bask in the sun with delight over this. Go to a bar with your buddies and have alot of laugh’s about the game. Doesnt mean that GB will never get beat by 30 pts. Doesnt guarantee GB will go to the Super Bowl. Really doesnt mean youre a better team than Atlanta. Im not gonna sit here and make excuses for Atlanta’s loss.
Things have a way of coming back around whether it be with us or another team but its for certain GB will have a bad day and get a beating. For you to come in the room and act like a child about your win only proves your too inmature and anal to realize Atlanta happened to play its worst game in 3 years.
A true Football Fan would not say i told you so, and that Atlanta is a joke, they insteadwould be decent and say good things about the other team as opposing players do.
Yes you have the right to say what you want to about the Falcons, i have already congradulated Greenbay on their win, they played great.
Dont prove yourself to be an ass and make all Packers Fans ashamed to have fans like you. Remember you get your turn next time and i wont go on Greenbays chatroom and chastise their team with comments such as yours to show that Atlanta Falcon Fans are childish and bad sports such as you.

My…my…my…Such fickle fans…You guys are pothetic. You would never see Saints fans turn on the team like this. We didnt finish were we wanted this year…Hell you guys put up a better record this year as much as that pains me to say.. just thought you guys might still be supporting your team.

but now u see what happens under the big lights….Roddy cant push off defenders to get open and get away with it and jekins didnt even try to hide it

NOTE TO MR. BLANK….you dont need much added to your team you just need some real fans…come to the big easy we will show you how real fans support a team….ex. when the saints came back from seattle (loss) we were at the airport between 2 and 3 am to welcome the team home and thank them for a good year.

Thanks for a great year Coach Smith. A decent draft pick and some good free agent shopping in the off season and we’ll be back here next year. Need to pick up a “quick hitter” back and perhaps a linebacker and defensive back to make us better. At any rate thanks for a great season; three winning years in a row for a Falcon team: who’d thunk it?

SAINT FANS- You have nothing to say as far as im concerned. YOU LOST to a 7-9 Team Seattle which is nothing near Greenbays team. Im suprised that there are any Saint Fans here. Dont even joke about the big losses, Atlanta beat you 63-7 some years ago.
Need to stay in that RAT INFESTED CITY New Orleans and quit drinking that contaminated water cause its affecting your judgement.
You got beat in the 1st round by a team sub par at best. But i really dont care. Saints were a bigger fluke than the Falcons. EX What? EX what?
You had it easier than the Falcons, way easier…. Greenbay’s a hot team right now……may even go to the Superbowl so atleast i feel better getting beat by a team like Greenbay than a team like Seattle.
Saints really choked worst than Atlanta, you had to only beat a mediocre team and we had to beat a very good Greenbay team thats on a roll.
We might have lost but atleast we had a better record than you and won our Division. What did you win? Swamp property.
Saint’s are on their way back to being an average team again, Tampa Bay and Atlanta will be #1 and #2 for the next few years and all you have to say is we won the Superbowl many moons ago. That was then and this is now. We’re moving forwards and youre going backwards, sinking back into the depths in the ocean where your city is going.
Im just glad that i dont have to sit here and watch the Saints in the playoffs and hear loud mouths going around talking like they have a “lisp in their mouths” who dat who dat over and over again.

they are who we thought they were … The Falcons other than a handful of times have always wet the bed when on the national stage.. I would rather have a smash mouth defense and lose 3-0 than to try to be a shoot out team… we are what we know we are … improving for sure but we have to develop a great defense to RISE UP and not dream we will when with our offense….the Steelers/Ravens game shows what true defenses can do….. Turner is a good running back but he is not Earl Campbell he trys to run outside and he doesn’t have the speed for that, he is hard to bring down and wears out defenses over time (SOMETIMES) but he is not the battering ram everyone seems to think… time for Arthur to pony up some $$$ and get some proven veterans in here to improve this team

This game points out very clearly the glaring weaknesses the team needs to address. We need more speed at running back, a couple of players in O line and D line. The supporting team arounf Ryan must get better to make up for his shotcomings. He does not have the insticts of Brady or Rodgers or Breese and never will. He’s good, but not good enough to overcome a weak team. We also need game changing recievers. White is a good possession guy but can’t break the game open.
If only a few changes are made, we will find ourselves in the same situation again next season….good record but not deep into the playoffs.
Answer one question….would you trade complete rosters with GB, Pitt, N.E? Yes, yes and yes!
We’ve got a troubled road ahead. I was not shocked at what happened last night.

“Falcons fan” nice point, they aren’t going to be any better next season if they don’t change that offense around, need faster receivers, Douglas, Finneran, Jenkins, needs to go, they do need another running back and those coordinators(offense and defense) need to be replaced. Objective Joe: You are not looking at the game very well. White is the break away receiver. OUR QB CANNOT GET THE BALL TO HIM ON DEEP THROWS. Our receivers are not the problem, we are running the type of offense already to hide the true weakness of the team. A QB THAT CANNOT MAKE THE DEEP THROWS. Not having Norwood what hurt us that way we can have a more potneat running game.

Yeah New Orleans has such great fans that they slept in the Dome after Katrina. Thats dedication. New Orleans just like Greenbay doesnt have a multi sports state so why wouldnt they be supportive its all they got. What just because you had 3,000 fans at an airport when the Saints got embarrased by a 7-9 team makes you better fans?
Who’s drinking the swamp water now?
I think those New Orleans fans have been eating all that contaminated shrimp down there and are all unemployed and all they have to pass the time away is complain, complain.
I’d be more worried about the living conditions down there and that black ocean you inhale than sitting here saying “yada yada” than what we did rather than what you did not do.
All in all you have a stink filled city, stink filled gulf, corrupt politicians, sky high unemployment, no tourism, and credit cards supplied by the govt up 2,000.00 and yet blow it on football tickets. Go figure. Yiou know infact you Saint Fans really bore me with your little comments that are baseless.

rmike158- yes we did lose to a 7-9 team, but at least when we were the number one seed, we went all the way to the super bowl and won it. We lost, i’m not going to make the excuse, that we had tons of injuries etc. You lost at home as a number one seed. You are only the second team to lose in the playoff’s by such a large margin. One thing we have that your team does not and that it’s fans want more then anything is a super bowl trophy. Your team got EXPOSED last night and that’s a fact. If you stop the run, the dirty birds are done. It happened with the saints a couple of weeks ago in the georgia dome and it happened again last night. Now, the other thing, when you talk about a city. Katrina was of epic proportion. That little snow on the road you guys had, and it shut down the entire metro atlanta area. Can’t say that we were unprepared, because it’s the United State Goverment (CORPS OF ENGINEERS) whose job it is to maintain the levee’s, not the locals as some of you would like to believe. On the other hand the state of georgia failed to take care of their business in clearing the highways and roadways a couple of days ago. So you see, just like your falcons, the state was not prepared when the time came.

OK, the dome is lousy venue. I was a season ticket holder for a number of years in late 90’s and just couldnt take going down there. Awful, the whole experience.
Draft: Last 3 years, who have we gotten out of it?
Defense: Owens is a joke. We lose 1 nickel back? Nobody can cover, Robinson, nobody.
Offensive Line: Caved in every play, terrible pass blocking.
Recievers: Where was Gonzales and White last night? Disappeared.
Everyone in the country knew what was coming last play of the half. Painful.
Take the best player available in the draft, because there is no area that we don’t need serious help. Get some free agents who can play. And lets get a really nice outdoor stadium where its fun to go to, and not some awful downtown dead end.

Bad planning, corrupt city officials, corrupt mayor, corrupt chief of police, half the police force ran off, thouands of buses were not moved and you had plenty of time to plan better so you deserve what you got.
Atlanta didnt plan thje snow storm well either but with the oil spill, Katrina and preperation plans New Orleans cost the tax payers billions upon billions of dollars, citizens shot other citizens, stole, raped one another. Alot of that could have been avoided if you didnt have so much corruption in your city and piss poor planning.

I read somewhere that Matt Ryan went into a shell. Not sure I agree. What happened was a combination of factors. First off, I thought the team was looking pretty good . . .at minimal decent in the first quarter . . ..actually the first half up to that last play. Now I know there was another Int in the endzone before that incredibly damaging Pick 6, but remember the team was moving OK up to that point. Motion pentalty I believe, then sack put them in a 3rd and long position. I would have preferred Ryan look for a shorter pass and minimal chance for 3 pts . . . .but he actually changed his normal decision making and I believe forced in a TD attempt. Could have been thrown earlier, could have been knocked down if receiver stayed up, could of – means nothing. Int in endzone means everything. After that, it became clear to us all that the Pack was pretty much having it’s way . . ..then the O had to change after 35-14. I still thought there was potential for an “interesting” end, but Onside Kick missed by inches, fumbles occurred. No I did not see Matt going into a shell, I saw a game that got away from Falcs. The sacks and Int’s were the very damaging blows. The inability to stop Rogers/Pack and other turnovers were the coup de grat.

Enough hammering on M Ryan, come on, when your defense can’t get the other team off the field at all something has to be done offensively (did anyone notice the Pack didn’t punt the ball at all). Chances have to be taken to score and keep the game tight, Rogers was eating them up on every play. Jenkins slips down and there is no chance to fight for the reception, granted the interception at end of the first half was critical, but Mularkey/Smith made that call. You saw what happened in the first half with the offense, Turner moved the ball, Ryan hitting some key throws. Then Weems ( a great special teams player) makes the great play, the Packers get the ball and go what 80+ yards. The reason Ryan couldn’t get the O going was the Packers ate up the clock because a lousy defensive effort kept our O off the field, look at time of possession. This wasn’t about the O, it was about a D that could not stop anyone, 3 possessions over 80 yards, even in 3rd and long they could not make a stop. In my opinion they need to look at the D, expecially Defensive Co-Ordinator (paid to make adjustments at the half) and D Backfield Coach. Plus, Mularkey/Smith needs to open up the O to allow Ryan to do what we all know he can do, throw the ball down field. Why do we not have a screen play or safety outlet pass to a back when MR gets harrassed as he was all last nite, something to slow down the opposing D.
By the way, did anyone notice the “ole man” Finneran making the catches when the ball came his way, taking two big hits and bouncing right up…way to go Finn. Great year Falcons, now make 2011 a better one by making the right changes to the D and allowing a good QB to become an even better one.

cg . ….. I think the Offensive Plan did have pretty good potential. The Falcs should have had 17 or 20 points at the half, but 2 FG attempts were never made due to sacks that lead to Ints. Unfortunately, the D plan could not stop the very hot Rogers. They tore apart the free spots in the middle, then got the outside later. With the Pack scoring, the Pick 6 . . . . .all best laid plans go awry.

And furthermore, the fact that we were getting killed by Rodgers and made no adjustment. That is lack of coaching ability. Not sure where it’s coming from but it needs to get fixed. IMHO I believe the soft zone approach of BVG almost lost us a number of games this season. That’s the first thing or person that needs to go. I saw absolutely 0 bump and run last night to interrupt the GB receivers, (I take that back – Chris Owens did [plenty of bumping it was just far down field where it shouldn’t have been)

Mularkey also did not adjust when our offense could not put the ball in the end zone. I don’t know if that was his decision or Smitty’s but that was poor coaching.

UN12 . . . . that is true. I do think that endzone throw is not attempted normally by Ryan if the Pack was not moving the ball so easily. But still – he’s gotta stick to smart decision making. Of course posters would have said he has to go for endzone if he made a shorter pass and they get 3 points. I absolutely hated that they tried that quick pass to sideline with a rollout – that turned into pick 6. With no timeouts it was SOOOO obvious to the D what the Falcs would attempt. Ryan has to not throw that ball – I would have preferred just going for 3 or an Endzone attempt again. I really thought the O was doing OK, but just NO match for what the Pack O was doing. They did have to force things. Even then I saw glimmer of hope for a closer game. But that went by the wayside with fumble caused by Ryan and the Center on one series, then the reversed reception to Jenkins. Too bad there.

Teams that finish 13-3 are not supposed to get embarassed like this at home against a 6 seed. Teams that finish 13-3 should dominate a 6 seed, not the opposite.
I agree with the comments that Mularkey must go (guess it doesn’t matter as he already has his foot one step out the door as it is). I was never imprssed with him as OC, and all I need to know about him is what a terrible head coach he was in Buffalo and then quit on the team after two years. Last night (and throughout the season) it was typical Mularkey conservative pklat calling which may win close games in the regular season but gets you spanked in the playoffs. What a disaster. Mike Smith says they’ll get better from this? How much better then 13-3 can you get? How much better the #1 seed can you get? The table was set and this team again disappoints. If you can’t go all the way as a #1 seed, what will it take?

First of all, as long as Ryan, is Quarterback, Atlanta will never play in the Super Bowl, because you have a better than average quarterback, who has no killer instinct, and no emotion that the players can feed off of. If Atlanta needed 7 yards for a 1st down, and Ryan had a clear path to run for it, he would still try to find a way to pass for it than to go ahead and run for it and get it over with. Atlanta is too conservative, until it has a “big play” offense, that will make teams play off them they will continue to crowd the line. One last thing, please! Please! Get a back with break away speed, because Tuner, although a decent back, he has no outside speed to get around defenses.

At the end of the first half they should have been going for 7 and not three.

When you think you are taking the safe and conservative route, bad things happen. They should have been playing to win, not playing NOT TO LOSE.

What we saw last night was a lack of playoff experience…especially from Ryan. We got behind and I think given the magnitude of the game Ryan forced the issue and threw that int before the half. The Defense could not stop them and Ryan felt he had to match GB’s offense score for score.

The Falcons are a good football team…and I challenge anyone to say otherwise. However….I do believe we were lucky to be 13-3 and we were not quite as good as most other 13-3 teams from past years. GB is playing lights out and we were exposed.

Having said that I will also say that I have all the confidence in the world in the coaching staff….this team will continue to get better and they will be in the playoff discussion next year and the future years to come as well. You can count on it!

Wow – Falcon fans (and players) really can’t come to grips with what happened. The player post game comments and fans (who abandoned their team after a great season) all whine about how “we didn’t play Falcons football”… ” a #1 seed should not lose to a 6 seed at home…”. The Falcons didn’t lose because they played badly. They were steamrolled by a superior team that had no business being a number 6 seed. Falcons are young on defense, Aaron Rodgers is maturing and has the best receiving corps in the NFL and the Packers defense overwhelmed Matt Ryan. Falcons will recover and this should be a good rivalry going forward. Of course, if you think the Packers are good now – wait till they get Finley and Grant back on offense and a healthy Smith and Bigby on defense. Future looks bright for both teams.

Ray B. . … .there have been quite a few non #1 seeds that have made it to SB, and even won. The Pack has been playing great ball towards the end of the year. Unfortunately for Falcs, they met a team as hot as any . . .maybe even New England . . . . in the league. #1 seed is nice, but remember, many had predicted the Pack to beat Falcs in Atlanta during the Reg season. They even have it more together now, especially on Offense. It was a terrible display on Defense and Offense because of turnovers. I think that Offense if it played normal good decisions / low turnover game would have put up close to their average of 25/26 ppg. Unfortunately, they would have needed around 35. (I say 35 as if they got that many, Pack would probably have not had as many points.)

Matt Ryan is average, can you see Ryan has a weak arm. He cannot make the deep throws. Since we are committed to Ryan we need to get a back with power and speed. The running back on this team has to have MVP potential. Our receivers are getting open on the deep routes since Ryan can’t get the ball to them on those routes we have to play conservative football. Murlarky HAVE TO COACH THE OFFENSE ACCORDING TO QB ABILITY.

I don’t know what would have worked last night better . …. .yelling, getting angry or staying calm and keeping the team from getting to frustrated. Earl Austin Jr: Ryan can’t make that throw it was the right throw (I am talking about the throw in the endzone). His arm is weak look at all the interceptions he had in his career. On 80% of those inceptions the receiver had his man beat by 2 or 3 yards. RYAN CANNOT MAKE THE DEEP THROWS.

Earl Austin Jr. . ….I’m a longtime Pats fan. I saw Tom Brady make a pick 6 pick in a Playoff game against the Broncos to Champ Baily I believe. That was much later in the game and stopped what I think was Pats taking the lead to an 10 pt+ lead for Broncos. Pretty sure it was 4th Qtr . . .by the way it was in the Broncos endzone or close to it. Was a 90-100 yard Pick 6. But we all know Tom Brady is not an elite QB.

Sam Williams . . . . Ryan made a late throw on that play and that was the problem. The ball was in middle of endzone and if he had thrown it a second or so earlier could have been perfect and GB corner would not have been there. I’m not defending the Int . .. .but you say “weak arm”. If that same pass was thrown quicker it’s a beautiful throw. Again, only talking about the weak arm part. This kid has been in the league 3 years and has a 20-4 record at home. A runner he is not, a passer he is (check the stats), a leader (ask his team-mates about their confidence in him to get it done). You got to have an O line that protects, a Defense to get you the ball, and an OC that plans and makes adjustments to game situations. We have none of this in a consistent manner right now. You take your QB, we’ll take MR and he’ll continue to give us the best chance to get to the big game.

You have a good team and I really admire your performance this year. as for our team with injuries and shooting ourselves in the foot a lot our season about ended four weeks ago. the Team needed to learn how to finish games. For all we know we could be looking at one of the best Quarterbacks to step foot on earth. We never know what we are going to get out of a season or our players on a given day. Granted we have a defensive coordinator that has the talent on the field to do what he asks. I look forward to watching your team grow and it will. I think the team will be built around the quarterback like it should. You beat us the last time. It was our turn this time. when the experts talk about momentum believe me it is a wild ride. Green Bay has it. They still hiccup once and awhile but to overcome the hiccups and move on is what a team must do. Team motto is ” No Excuses”
I like your organization a lot. It is really(what I think a class act). I would have been rooting for you had you beaten us. Best wishes to your guys at the Pro bowl and I look forward to seeing your team next year better and improved.

Marta is also defunct, slow, and poorly run. By leaving early the fans don’t have to sit in traffic 2 hours or hang out at the Marta “elbow to elbow” with thousands of people. I dont think youre fans are ugly, PackerFan since 63. I thought the girls at UofW at Madison were very cool. Our fan base is a sore point for any old school Falcons fan. Its true, its to admit it. I was old Fulton County stadium in the old days, and have memories of games to this day. Of course, most of the memories are of other teams, like Broadway Joe slinging this 60 yard pass out of the endzone right in front of me. We were really bad for a long time. Then we finally had a hard nose team under Bennett, and a lot of people sort of joined up then. At least we were tough. We played some great 7-6 type games against Philly on Monday night in those days. Recent Falcon history is when a lot of these fans joined up. And of course, 40% of the town are transplants with other loyalties. But I dont know, when Eugene Robinson showed up with Carolina the year after his superbowl fiasco, fans cheered him when he was introduced. I was sitting right behind the Carolina bench and heckeled him the whole game. Kirby Puckett was introduced a year or so after he killed us in the series, and he was cheered. I’m the only one booing him. I dont get it. I dont knkow if its a Bible belt thing or what. Sam Williams . . ..just got back on. The knocks on Ryan were plentiful from the detractors on this post since he was drafted. Not mobile, throws too many interceptions, weak armed, . . .can’t remember any more. Well he definitely is not as mobile as the previous Falcon QB he was being compared to, he did have 19 interceptions his senior year at BC, but overall in NFL he has made great decisions to limit Int’s, and I don’t think that criticism held up. The weak arm . . .well granted he doesn’t have Flacco type rocket arm, and even analysts have stated that . . .but they also have stated he has a good arm. Even on these posts every game there was the back and forth about passes he threw proving or disproving the “noodle arm” criticism. Hey, he made a couple of big mistakes last night that definitely hurt the team at important times when points could have been put on the board . . .and the Pick 6 – just made my stomach churn. I have watched most games in NFL when I get them, have the Int’s been mostly on long passes? I don’t have them all memorized. I know a few have definitely been on those passes to sidelines that CBs just love to have a go out.

Sam WIlliams . .. . .OK so they were last or low in passes over 20+ yards. What you don’t add is that they were top 3 in 1st downs (maybe #1), top 3 in third down completion, #1 in Time of Possession, and 13-3. Now they got their butts handed to them last night . . . .. .but what would you prefer being a team that throws a ton of long bombs and leads 20+ yards receptions with a decent or losing record . . . .or controlling the ball with a very consistent offense and going 13-3. Now and then you get the Drew Brees season like last year with the Saints. I’m sure they were way up there in that stat. I’ll have to try and find out how the top teams with 20+ yard receivers did. I guess if any of them are still in the Playoffs, maybe the Pack and Bears . . .. not sure how Brady did as the offense went back to a short pass / control style.

Changes need to take place with the coaching staff and the players.
We were beat in EVERY aspect of the game..
The Falcons have NOT had their collective heads in the game since the Carolina game 2 weeks ago!
The coaches were busy INTERVIEWING for more lucrative jobs..
The players were busy looking for RESPECT-partying-glad handing..
All you had to look at was the dejection on the faces of the players on the bench..

Once “Recent” Reader……I respect your knowledge of football. I think you are aware of Matt’s weaknesses. Therefore we should not to much on Matt’s ego. Matt has some good points i.e. knowloedge of the game play calling when in the no huddle and the ability to read defenses. So we have to resign in the fact that we will need an Adrian Peterson type runner so we can run a control type offenese. We can not point at our receivers because it is not our receivers that do not open up the game for us it is our QB. We have to invest more on our defense because we can not play catch up football. We a defense for close call games. Michael Turner during the season if our MVP player because the Falcons game will be successful base on our running back success. But Turner no longer have the speed to be primary back. So in the off season we need to focus on running back and a very strong defense. Our offense coordinator is good for what we have at QB.

I am a huge Green Bay Packer Fan, but being a Georgia Boy I was pulling for the Falcons, so I was disappointed to see the kinda play I saw last night. I saw one quarter of trying and three quarters of “almost gotcha”…..This team is much better than what they showed on the field and should use the off season to decide whether they are going to fold the tent or come back with a vengance next year. I hope it will be the latter, but frankly, some of these guys are too wealthy (from fat salaries) to care about working when they can be off spending some of that money…..If I’m wrong, then prove it next year Fat Cats !

Once “Recent” Reader…….We need to make those 20+ yards when they are available. I am not saying we should have Darrel Lamonica type offense. But if it’s there we need to take them. If you have a QB with a weak arm a Defense Back will only run up their stats. I am talking about being able to maka 20+ yard post play down the middle. If you have a weak arm the ball will get there late or to slow, giving a DB time to pick it off.

Turner will break one if there’s a hole, of course, most backs will and once he gets in the second level he’s a load. But how many times this year did he tippy-toe up to line and just go down? Or try to go wide? Its not there. His speed has been off since his first big year here. We need big time linemen up front. This group has maybe improved, but they sure get beat a lot of the time.

Very disappointing that the players and coaches have no more desire to play hard and win than what they showed on Saturday night. The tackling and coverage aspects of the defense is something that really needs to be evaluated and addressed. Chris Owens is not a NFL DB. Curtis Lofton is not the stout, mean middle LB that a good defense requires. John Abraham should retire or become a second string guy. Jamaal Anderson should be released, and forced to give back 75% of his salary for his lack of play.

Offensively, Matt Ryan is 0-2 in playoff games. Not good for a leading QB. It is time to consider that we may not have the right guy under center. Tony G. is still serviceable, but we need a young stud at TE. Michael Jenkins should be traded. We have no explosion on offense at all. Other teams have a lot of what we do not have. It is very discouraging to year after year have to face the fact that your team just will never be good enough to win a championship. I honestly feel that the Falcons organization is going to lose a great deal of fans behind the pitiful effort that was displayed last night. Major changes need to be addressed and made.

Well, at least the author of this blog is happy. Congrats on your team’s win DOL. Exactly why were you hired to cover the Falcons? For those of you who missed DOL’s trip down “memory lane” and his love affair with his old job, take a look at his recent post. It’s ironically called “Behind Enemy Lines.” I can only assume he’s talking about his work in Atlanta. Again, why were you hired to cover the Falcons, DOL? http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-falcons-blog/2011/01/14/behind-enemy-lines-packers-are-confident/

And by the way, you have spelling errors. Spell check is pretty easy function of most word processing software. “Proteching,” I’m pretty sure, it’s not a word. Feel free to “refudiate.”

I’m a rabid fan but sorry, the bubble is burst. Coaches and players are fond of saying their opponent was the better team “on this day”. Unfortunately, there is a pattern to these losses. Pittsburgh beat us with their backup quarterback. The Eagles destroyed us with their backup quarterback. We caught the Saints off guard and stole one there. Then they came and took it from us in our Dome, where we are “unbeatable”. We did not dominate in more than a game or two games, and then against questionable opponents.

We have serious deficiencies in both coaching and personnel. A little tweak is not going to fix this team. The Falcons have no air game to speak of. Yes, Roddy White is an elite receiver, but take him away and we are largely helpless to play catch-up from any big deficit. We can’t grind out a running game under those circumstances because we can’t score points fast enough. Elite teams know this and exploit that weakness. Shut down Roddy White, get up 14 points (which elite teams have shown they can do), and the Falcons are done. Our coaches may know about this problem but don’t have the personnel to fix it. They may not know in which case, we are doubly screwed because we need new coaches AND new players. Does that sound like a simple tweak?

I’m trying hard not to be all negative. The Falcons DO have some good players. They have put together a good regular season and a third consecutive winning season, for the first time. They are a high character team, of which we can be proud. To win playoff games, some “facts” need to be revisited and addressed.

1. When we played Green Bay, the Saints, the Eagles, etc., THEIR receivers are frequently open and running towards their goal. Our receivers usually are covered in a sea of opposing jerseys and have to run BACK to the ball. Why is this? Is it the coaching philosophy? Is it poor play calling? Is it taking Matt Ryan too long to get rid of the ball? Why could Matt Ryan not see two Green Bay linemen in his face all evening and throw the ball away or deliver it to a hot read? He stepped INTO a sack way more than he stepped OUT of one. He has a questionable long ball. He turns it over at critical times in big games. Where’s the quick reads, the quick (good) decision making, the play extension through great footwork?

2. Why are elite teams so successful in shutting down our running game? Is it the play calling (coaches)? Are the linemen too small? Does Michael Turner have incredibly strong legs but poor vision? (How many times does he disregard an open hole and opt instead for running into a pile of humanity? It happens a LOT.)

3. Where are the lower tier names who show up and become heroes in big games (think Lynch, Starks, Avant, and half the Green Bay team). Who was the speed option to losing Norwood? Where’s our receiving speedster who can get consistently get behind the defense (and why didn’t he do it)?

… too many more to list in my current mood of disgust.

Lastly, we should not be concerned about whether we draw Seattle or Green Bay in a playoff game. We are lacking the mental attitude which elite teams have. The Ravens lost to the Steelers, but you had to love the T-shirt: “Hey, Pittsburgh!: “[followed by the bird flipping a bird]. I normally don’t go for the braggadocio and bravado, but this was clue about the right mental toughness and intent to dominate. And Suggs, at least, did back it up!

Sam, I think we are basically on the same page. I am probably:) a bit more optimistic of what we have with Matt Ryan as a QB. (Could be that BC Alum bias!) Hey it would be great to have more of those 20 yard passes. Do you think it is the arm? I don’t see the receivers seeming to be as open as say the Saints / Packers / Colts receivers on those longer plays. Is it the routes, the scheme, the way team is defended, receivers not being able to break away, the QB’s arm (although I think he can hit those passes – although will freely admit he is not a hard thrower like Rogers, Brees, Flacco, Manning and some others.)

Remember the first play he ever made at the Dome? I think its the routes and the lack of solid protection for Matt. When he has time, he can hit it. Even games we won, though, you had to notice how open their recievers were, and ours seem to have to fight for every ball. The five and eight yard down and outs, the five and eight yard turn ins to Gonzales. When theyve got those big fat guys on the D Line they can risk jumping the outs with help from guys who dont have to play the run, take away the out and go to White the same way,the short ones to Gonzales and they both disappear. They like their chances with Jenkins and Finnerin.

JSS, Najeh . ..and even Monsieur Choke . . .. .well I’ll say this. It looks like my “favorite” NFL QB Mr. Ryan is still somewhere in the 12 – 20 range at this time. He could have done much better to help a team that needed scoring yesterday. The two Int’s were just plain bad. No need to force it in the endzone . . ..unless he had thrown it earlier or a little higher/farther. That roll-out Pick-6 . . . .terrible. Now, I still will be back to defend Mr. Ryan . …. but I’m pragmatic and know there is still lots of room for improvement. And he is now 0-2 as QB in playoffs. A monkey is beginning to grow a bit bigger on his back.

It is difficult for any coach to change the collective mind of an overconfident team, which the Falcons become after sliding into a 13 win season.

Our denfensive backs need to learn tight coverage, close enough to whack the ball as it arrives. We let them make the reception, and then tackle. Never gonna work.

I was impressed by the protection the center of the Packer’s line gave Aaron.
We passed on the first Pouncey in the draft, maybe we should try the second one.

Pack played a great game and the Falcons did not. Rodgers in particular is an exceptional quarterback. He far better than the short man, Brees. I think we’ll have problems with Rodgers for a long time to come and the Bucs will be contenders as well. But the aints time is over. @Once.. We have to trade Matt Ryan………

Once we haven’t talked since the beg of the season. Now that its over, I think its more than fair to say again that although Matt has improved with his check downs and running on some broken plays, he still lacks the arm strength to open up the offense….in the pre-season we had a prob scoring and again in the playoffs……the coaching staff has protected Matt’s deficiencies and lack of arm strength …this is why we only execute slant plays….(see the pick 6) and the best defenses in the playoffs will take that away from us….I hate to say it but Matt R and M Turner will never work….Turner is not using PEDs anymore and the speed is gone….Matt arm strength is less than average and for a 3rd pick overall we overpaid to please PETA and rebuild our brand…Now that its done, we have to look to trade Matt he was terribly exposed last night and it will not get any better his arm is too weak to carry a team…..Look at the best QBs in the league and remaining in the playoffs……Your QB has to carry the team or at least carry the offense on his back…..I wish Matt could be he cant and as a Falcon fan and as I said at the beg of the season….I don’t think is a “franchise” QB……see you guys during the draft….

Give Dimitroff and Smith one more year to shore up some weak pts on offense and defense-

they need another stud DE to go along with Abraham- Bierman needs to be a situational guy- And find another good nickel corner to back up Brian

Besides the offense turning the ball over Aaron Rodgers could pick us apart with Chris Owens back there. That was the biggest problem in my opinion. Chris owens was grabbing some 20 yards down the field and he always looked several steps away from his receiver-

I think that made it hard to blitz and do some things van gorder wanted to do.

That won’t happen in my opinion next year-

Would you trade him for Jeff George and his rocket arm right now? Of course not. You protect him, give him time, get his recievers open for goodness sake, and he’ll do it. He’s clutch. Packer SuperBowl: I knew you meant “not many” :)

JP: I knew yesterday’s game would unfortunately bring the detractors more vigorously into the discussion on M. Ryan. I can tell you this right now living in SE Florida . . . the Miami Dolphin Fans would absolutely LOVE to have M. Ryan as their QB. The past 2 years, actually the past 3 years, there has been much discussion about how they messed up not picking Ryan at the #1 spot. Now, they are happy with the Off Tackle Long they picked #1. But they know it is more important in this league to have a good/great QB. So the detractors on this blog can continue to call Ryan average, noodle-armed, not mobile . … .but I’ll tell you there are others who aren’t in the fray of the Falcon QB discussion that would absolutely love the have Ryan. “It was a very discouraging night for our football team.” Got that right, Mike. Kind of hard to swing the momentum to your team when the only fans left are wearing green and gold. You had a great season, by a team that surpassed its expectations. Instead of sticking around, cheering them on, and sending them off on a decibel meter breaking thank you, you left them looking for the easiest route off the field. Time to FAN UP Atlanta!!!

I think Owens has played his last game in ATL. MR had a bad game, but his overall track record is pretty good. This was the worst game for the Falcons, not because they haven’t let us down before but because the last 3 years led us to believe again that “This Time it Was Going to be Different”. I feel like Charlie Brown, staring up at the sky after Lucy has yanked the ball away for the 4000th time.
Some changes have to be made. They need better depth in the secondary. They need a pass rush. They need a speedy change-of-pace back. They need at least two solid, deep threat WRs. After this season I’d keep Finneran over Douglas. Fin contributes on the field wherever asked. Douglas was a no show all season.
Make some hard decisions about the DL. Time to fish or cut bait with Anderson. What’s Jerry’s future? Is Walker a good enough rotational player? If Sidbury is so good, why was he inactive most of the season (where your entire pass rush came from one player)?
If the DL needs help with the rush, what are our options at OLB? Witherspoon can cover as can Lofton, but neither are great pass rushers. Peterson’s getting older, so should they draft his replacement keeping pass rushing in mind?
Play calling seemed a problem all year. It’s time for MM to pull out all the stops on his playbook. How much credibility did he lose last night in his quest for another HC job?

Falcons, right now we’re feeling jaded and let down. Show us there’s light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train.

RealFalconFan, the Packers didn’t beat the Falcons? You were watching a different game than I did. The Falcons defense didn’t force a single punt all night long. It is a passive defense that reacts and they got their butts kicked badly. And Packer fans wouldn’t have gotten up and left at the end of the third quarter. That was shameful.

Falcons caught a hot team that has been able to play injury free for the past 4 weeks, so they’ve been able to get much more cohesion. Many of us Packer fans were expecting this all year; a unique combination of play makers on offense and defense.

Of course, the Falcons will be back next year. Their combination on offense is very dangerous. Need to draft for defense. One thing – they’ll play a tougher schedule next year. And they are in a tough division. Solid head coach and organization – they will be back.

drmondo, agreed. I can’t see Owens haning aroudn next year. Just way too inept, really embarrasing. It was hard to believe Smitty said he had to see film before he could say how bad the guy was, and actuall said oh, he did some good things out there. I dont what game he was watching.
I guess they justified Anderson as being some kind of run stopper this year, but they should’ve cut his bait years ago. Major bust. I just hope that they can do something in the draft, get us some talent, cut the dead wood around here, and get some free agents who can play the game. Major list of things to improve. They need to just start telling the truth. Im tired of the coachspeak, tell it like it is.

Are you kidding me about the Falcons? They had the easiest schedule in the NFL! LOL! In Philly, everyone knew that they weren’t going to go to the Superbowl. LOL! The Falcons were predicted to lose the first game in the playoffs. They are a joke! Eagles, Bears, Packers, and Saints are teams that make the NFC division and if they had that same easy ass schedule that the Falcons had they probably would had 1 or 2 losses throughout the season. Sorry to all Falcon fans, but the Falcons are a joke. It’s not that they had a bad game, it’s that they played a real team like all of the other real teams that they’ve lost to in the season. PLEASE!!!! Don’t blame the coach or Falcons. Blame the NFL for making the Falcon players and fans to believe that they were a tough team. The Falcons were humiliated yesterday and looked like College players. The NFL should really think and change the outcome of who makes it to the playoffs and who gets home division. Seattle makes it to the playoffs? Really? Saint’s and Baltimore had to play on the road with only 4 losses on their record to teams with 6 and more losses? Atlanta Falcons played practically nobody teams within the season and masks many people into believing that their actually a threat to every team in the NFC division? C’mon! Soon, a team with 15 wins and 1 lost will be playing in the Wild Card playoff on the road to a team with 10 losses. NFL needs to wake up and need to change some standards! This isn’t the 80’s and 90’s where Wild Card teams were known to not ever win a SuperBowl! It was un-heard of in those days. Today, no one knows what team is going to win the SuperBowl. A Wild Card team can win the SuperBowl. I swear the NFL is doing this on purpose for gambling purposes.

Classless comments reveal classless fans. Some fans ought to keep their mouths shut. The Falcons from the top…ownership, coaches and players have conducted themselves with class even in defeat. From the comments made by some fans you would think they owned the team..that it is their money, their time, their sweat, their risk, their muscle, their effort that is on the line. Atlanta Falcons have some really classy fans, but unfortunately not many of them blog on the AJC. I say, thank you Falcons for a great entertaining season….learn from defeat and go forward!

This team got some lucky bounce this year and won some close games that could have gone the other way. When they were 8 and 2 Coach Smith stated that they had not played a complete game so far in the season, which was very honest of the coach to state the fact. The offense did not play as well as was expected all year, there were flashes when Ryan was very good, but he was not consistent, neither did Turner always run as hard as was expected. Teams realized that it is best to focus on stopping Turner and Ryan was not able to move the sticks when this happened. Ryan is still young and is still developing and should not be compared with Rodgers who sat behind Favre for three years and gained valuable experience. I hope Ryan wil get to his level soon.
UGA BugKiller : I agree with your comments on Mike Smith, and I have stated this on numerous occasions in the past about his conservative approach. As the DC in Jacsonville he had two stud Defensive Tackles
and a very good defense when he went up against New England in the Championship game prior to coming here, and he never once tried to put any pressure on Brady. He is what he is,a very conservative coach who plays to keep it close with the hope that he will sneak out a win in the end. I was surprised when he blitzed Drew Brees as often as he did.
I did not expect the Birds to make it to the Super Bowl at the start of the season, so I will applaud their record. However Dimitroff will need to find some Defensive backs and Linebackers in the Draft. It is also time to find a quick running back to complement Turner and who can take it to the house. It is also time to find a replacement for Gonzalez as it is doubtful he will play after next season. Dimitroff has still not found a Defensive end to rush the passer and complement Abraham and subsequently replace him.
People around here hailed Dimitroff as if he was the next Belicheck or Ted Thompson when it came to drafting talent, but he is yet to find a good defensive back. He missed on Chevis Jackson, Chris Owens, Dontae Robinson and it would seem Dominique Franks. What has happened to Sidbury and how about Jerry the #1 pick of a year ago? Did he miss on them as well?

Jg 497 shut the f**k up if you don’t know what you are talking about. How could the falcons have the easiest schedule and how could the Falcons schedule be easier that that of the saints? The Falcons played common opponents with the Saints and the other teams in the NFC South with the exception of their NFC opponents not in the NFC west. In other words the Falcons, Saints, Bucks and Panthers played against all the teams in the NFC West and the AFC North. For their uncommon opponents the Falcons played the Eagles and the Packers and the Saints played the
1 and 4 Cowboys and the Vikings. Which of the two would have played the harder schedule, I believe the Falcons.

I’m disgusted by the comments on this board. The Packers played well, the Falcons didn’t. That does not make the Falcons a bad team, and the Packers were certainly better than their number 6 ranking, everyone knows that (if nothing else, they were better than the Seahawks who were just lucky enough to win their conference with a losing record), so it’s not like losing to them should be an embarrassment. Plus the Packers have been hot ever since Rodgers returned from his concussion. He’s a great quarterback with a deep group of receivers. But enough about my team.

More importantly, one bad game shouldn’t be a reason to turn against the quarterback or coach… of any team. I applaud the way the Falcons are setting up their future, and I look forward to their coming great seasons and some healthy competition for the Packers. It’s all about patience, it rarely happens that a team turns from a losing team to a Superbowl or even conference champ. Good luck next year Falcons!

Mike Smith- “Underperformed” wow! How about no heart, no focus, laying down, not motivated, forgot assignments, no fundamentals on tackling, too cold inside, no rest, ate too much, partied all night, still in hibernation, had to play the reserves, players bonus wasnt enough.
Excuses, excuses, and not one time did any coach or Falcon apologize to the “Fans” for lack of performance and getting the crap beat out of you.
Their using your beat down as highlights on t.v. and laughing about the shalacking by Greenbay. If it was Greenbay that got beat, i’d understand better. They already played in Philly and beat them so maybe being tired and playing a #1 Seed.
But you guy’s have NO EXCUSE and if i was Arthur Blank i’d have you in my office chewing some butt out.
Stay out of the PLAYOFFS if youre not gonna show up ready to play. Dont build us up with hope because of your season only to lose in the 1st. round.
The Hawks and Braves did that. You should have atleast have the decency to publically apologize to the fan’s not excuses as to why you lost. 10 million people saw that but the fans who braved the cold, bought the tickets, got baby sitters, rescheduled their plans to attend.
Those Fans!
Arthur Blank doesnt deserve a NEW STADIUM. If you want one buy it yourself so that the tax payers arent forced into higher taxes again.
You guy’s make 1000% more than the ordinary Joe anyhow which youre living in the lap of luxury. I’d rather watch Ga. Tech, GSU, and Georgia Bulldogs those arent paid players.

True that the Falcons didnt show up. Like a person said earlier these are hiccups with the team and we got good personnel to make the team better. Its bound to happen that the Falcons or any sports team are gonna have a bad day. Didnt expect it to happen in the playoffs but it is what it is and we must move on.
Alot of us are hurt because we’re die-hard fans and were venting our dismay as to what happened. We beat Greenbay up in lambeau field years back and i cant imagine how bad their fans felt after losing their 1st. playoff game there and even with Brett Favre at the helm.
But now Greenbay is back as Atlanta will be. We have to look past this game and enjoy the other playoffs.
Oh yeah and the 14-2 Team New England Patriots that beat Jets 45-3 lost to them, does this mean theyre a sorry team? No because they’ll be back.
Atlanta can only get better and the NFC South will have great teams such as Tampa Bay, New Orleans and maybe even Carolina.
It’ll be a fun year and something to talk about and debate in this room for sure. All in all we’re sportsmen and if any teams from the NFC South go into the playoffs we should pull for them. Just as we do in college with their respective Conferences.
I’d like to say something that has nothing to do with the Falcons here about Royal Marshall that was on 750 WSB who died yesterday at the age of 43 who left 2 little girls behind.
My prayers and thoughts are with you my friend, you were an awesome person on the radio that i loved to listen to during the week.
I pray that God will watch over your framily and bless your children and give them peace as well as your wife and family.
Again we will all miss you and that voice on radio and the happiness you provided us day in day out.

The Falcons have a “Ham & Egg” quarterback who does not Stretch the field. Matthews “Bloodline” said after the game that their strategy was to put 8 in the box (stop the run), play bump & run (on our non physical receivers) & make Matty beat them with his ARM. That should be an embarrasing for an All Pro QB to have that tag on him. We were 31 out of 32 teams with plays of 20+ yards and we had only 1 play of 50+ yards this season.
Ryan had only ONE, 300+ yard game and that was against Baltimore in November.
The defense is weak. P. Jerry is a BUST as well as Weatherspoon and Anderson. Why in the Hell didn’t we go after Juluis Peppers.
We have to get out of this “Choir Boy” team concept and get some real Playmakers on this roster!!!

Everybody cool down. The Falcons are not near that bad and the Packers are not near that good. When a game gets out of control, and the players know it, everything goes from bad to worse. Look at the NE and Jets games as a classic illustration. How could NE possilby lose at home to the Jets after the thrashing only a few weeks before? This was a crushing defeat!!

If Flowery Branch wants to hide their heads in the sand and just assume all is OK with our team then that’s the wrong approach.

Mularkey needs to be fired. We have too much talent on offense to struggle to score week in and week out..

Defense played well above their heads all year except Saturday , so instead of questioning BVG, I question TD. Where is Jerry and Weatherspoon?? These two are his top picks in the last two drafts and they have done nothing. Robinson is terrible, 1 INT this year. He might as well play Free Safety the way he plays off the WR’s..

We won 6-7 games in the fourth Q, next year maybe we only win 1 or 2, who knows but we need to step up if we want to compete with the NFL Elite teams..

Believe it or not teams do reach a peak sometime during the season, hopefully its at the end of the season when it counts most, the falcons seemed to peak around game 13, losing the last 2 of 3 games, green bay on the other hand has continued to improve and is just now reaching a peak, a much improved team since the falcons played them the first time as the score indicated, the turning point of course was the interception and touchdown just before half time from which the falcons never recovered.

We have major issues on both sides of the ball:
Offense:
1) Fewest or tied for fewest 20 yard+ plays in the NFL
2) Turner only caught the ball 12 times this season, lowest of any starting RB in NFL
- These two facts sum up an offense that can’t stretch the field! If the D knows we aren’t going deep and they know when Turner is the lone set back that we never throw to him don’t you think that is a huge tip off? crowd the box? play bump and run with our receivers?

Mularkey had 5 guys going to the Pro Bowl on offense but yet we struggled all season to score TD’s..

I think BVG did a decent job this season but failed on Saturday.

Look at our players on D?? Our line is OK but LB’S and DB’s are poor..
TD drafted Jerry and Weatherspoon and they have done nothing! Robinson is a bust.

We need much more talent of D and we need it now through free agency and not the draft!

We got lucky many times this season, AND THAT’S GREAT!, but next year luck may not be on our side so we need to rely on talent and while our offense is talented (minus Mularkey’s weak play calling) or defense is terribly unskilled… many, many hole sto fill.
