Curtis Compton ccompton@ajc.com

Falcons coach Mike Smith did not make any excuses for the teams poor showing against the Green Bay Packers.

Here’s what he had to say:

OPENING STATEMENT: Obviously, it’s extremely hard in this league to get the outcome that you want when we play the type  of football that we played today. It was very uncharacteristic in terms of turnovers, proteching the football and winning third down on defense. It was a tough night for our football team. We had way too many mistakes. We ran into a real hot quarterback, playing at a high level. We obviously had a real tough time stopping them. Their offense did a very good job. Then when you turned the offense over four times and have five sacks, it’s not going to be pretty. We thought that the first quarter of the game went well. As we got into the second quarter it started to kind of go away from us. We had an opportunity ,in the third quarter on third down and 13  with them backed up, and we didn’t get a stop. We couldn’t spin the momentum. Again my hats off to them. They are moving on. We’ll be a better team and learn from this experience. Everyday, if your win or lose, it’s a learning experience. This is something that we will learn from. With that, I’ll open it up for questions.

ON THE INTERCEPTIONS RIGHT AT THE END OF THE HALF: “That was a tough play. We were right at the edge of a long field goal attempt. . . We wanted to try to get it in five more yards for the range that we had set for our field goal kicker. It was a throw where the guy jumped the route and ended up really turning the tide right before the half. . . . then it really started to snowball from that point.”

(DID GET THIS QUESTION): Again, I would not Mark. There were numerous opportunities to get the guy on the ground. That’s a very good quarterback, a very good offense. Our intent was to get him on the ground. We had some free runners, but we didn’t convert. I would have never have imagined that happening. It was not very characteristic of the way that we want to play football. That was not the way we played football all season long.

ON THE PLAY OF THE SECONDARY: “Well, we gave up way too many yards obviously. Touchdown passes. We had some penalties that hurt us. Until I watch the tape it’s going to be really difficult  . . .  but obviously when you give up the number of points and the passing yardage that we gave up today, we didn’t play our best game. That’s very obvious. I don’t know if we tackled as cleanly as we needed to. It was a very discouraging evening for our football team. For our organization, but we will come back from it. I can assure you of that.

DID YOU ALL MISS BRIAN WILLIAMS: “Brian Williams is our starting nickel back. When a guy is hurt, the next guy has to come in and make the plays. You want to have all of our players out there if possible. He wasn’t there. I thought that Chris did some nice things when they were out there  tonight.  Until I watch the tape, I’m not going to make any judgments  on how individuals played.”

ON WHAT THEY DID WELL: I think we did a pretty good job stopping the run. We did a pretty good job this week preparing for the run. They used the same game plan they had the last time we played them. They made the plays when they had to make them and we didn’t. That’s  what happened in the ball game. They were the better team in the ball game tonight.

WAS RODGERS BETTER THAN LAST TIME? “Yes he was. Aaron Rodgers was better than he was the last time we played them and we weren’t as good.

ON WEEMS KICKOFF RETURN: “It was a big play by Eric and our special teams. Then we got put back out there on the field defensively and we didn’t get a stop. It was one of those 80-yard drives  .  .  . we didn’t get it stopped. You can’t go out there and play that many snaps in a football game and think that you are going to be stronger and you’re gong to win the fourth quarter.

ON RYAN’S INTERCEPTIONS: “I’m not going to comment  on bad throw, bad decision until I’ve had the opportunity to really watch the tape and study what the coverage was. I think I know what it was, but until I watch the tape I’m going to hold onto any type of judgment.”

THE FOURTH AND ONE ON THE FIRST TD DRIVE: “Our philosophy this season on fourth down, especially in the red zone, we feel we have a pretty good chance to make it statistically. We did that and it ended up turning into a touchdown down instead of a field goal. We you are facing an impressive offense like that you’ve got to score touchdowns. You can’t get into a field goal kicking contest because that offense right now is playing very effectively.”

ON HIS POST GAME SPEECH TO THE TEAM: “Generally speaking, I know they are disappointed. I’m disappointed. We didn’t like the way the game went and that we would learn from it. The important thing is that we learn from what took place. I also told them that they need to realize that even with as bad as they feel right now, they have to remember that there is a whole body of work that we put out there this year and we can’t forget that either.”

WAS THE WEATHER THIS WEEK A FACTOR: “No excuses. We’re not going to make any excuses. I thought our preparation was good. All week, when we came to practice we were focused. We just did not play Atlanta Falcons football. The way the Atlanta Falcons have played all season long. I think the statistical bear that out from the score on the scoreboard to what happened to us offensively and defensively.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud of the Atlanta Falcons. Green Bay Packer are a better team, I am happy that we had great record in 13-3 before the lost. Mike Smith learn a powerful lesson, to win a Super Bowl, you can’t celebrate to early. The Atlanta Falcons have to get more in depth in there roster, and find guys who are going to step up when people get hurt. No excuses for this lost, defense let us down, and they have to get better and find guys that can step up in that role when diversity is an issue on the field. I am a true Falcons Fan, and I am hurt at the lost, but you have to move on and learn from this lost and get better.

For the last year, I’ve been studying the comments on sports blogs and notice a definite trend. There seems to be a quick to judgement type cynicism combined with a thought process that is overly simplified and jumps to unwarrented conlusions based on incomplete, erroneous, and overly emotional interpretation of the facts around them.
My own opinion is that it results from listening to much negative radio.

Decatur Falcons, great sentiment and I agree totally with your opinion! But unfortunately this is the Blog World where it is always what have you done for me lately, and or PlayOff Win or Bust, which becomes NFC Conf Champs or Bust, which ends with Super Bowl or Bust. So we will have many hear enjoying the Bust and taking their shots (some very deserved!!!) at our QB, our D, our coaches, our GM / Owner. As you see, for many it is more fun to “Tear Down” then to give praise and constructive criticism.

gb fan—hope I meet you one day—falcons played like they were in the super bowl vs denver–gb dominated in everyway–they more they schooled my beloved falcons in every phase—except 10 seconds of kick off coverage—the 59:50 left was pretty much ALL GB. I wish GB a great run—we certaintly did not deserve to be on the same field. Need d line and a better off scheme–now.

I think this game confirmed two things. The Packers are better than many thought and the Falcons are not as good as their record would indicate which also shines a light on the NFC South. It was obviously was weaker than many would admit. The Packers could be the real surprise in the playoffs and on their way to the Super Bowl.

Chicago is certainly spanking the Seahawks around. That should be a real war next week for the NFC. If Rodgers stays as hot as he is, they could take it all I think.

“It was a very discouraging night for our football team.” Got that right, Mike. Kind of hard to swing the momentum to your team when the only fans left are wearing green and gold. You had a great season, by a team that surpassed its expectations. Instead of sticking around, cheering them on, and sending them off on a decibel meter breaking thank you, you left them looking for the easiest route off the field. Time to FAN UP Atlanta!!!

I think Owens has played his last game in ATL. MR had a bad game, but his overall track record is pretty good. This was the worst game for the Falcons, not because they haven’t let us down before but because the last 3 years led us to believe again that “This Time it Was Going to be Different”. I feel like Charlie Brown, staring up at the sky after Lucy has yanked the ball away for the 4000th time.
Some changes have to be made. They need better depth in the secondary. They need a pass rush. They need a speedy change-of-pace back. They need at least two solid, deep threat WRs. After this season I’d keep Finneran over Douglas. Fin contributes on the field wherever asked. Douglas was a no show all season.
Make some hard decisions about the DL. Time to fish or cut bait with Anderson. What’s Jerry’s future? Is Walker a good enough rotational player? If Sidbury is so good, why was he inactive most of the season (where your entire pass rush came from one player)?
If the DL needs help with the rush, what are our options at OLB? Witherspoon can cover as can Lofton, but neither are great pass rushers. Peterson’s getting older, so should they draft his replacement keeping pass rushing in mind?
Play calling seemed a problem all year. It’s time for MM to pull out all the stops on his playbook. How much credibility did he lose last night in his quest for another HC job?

Falcons, right now we’re feeling jaded and let down. Show us there’s light at the end of the tunnel and it’s not a train.

RealFalconFan, the Packers didn’t beat the Falcons? You were watching a different game than I did. The Falcons defense didn’t force a single punt all night long. It is a passive defense that reacts and they got their butts kicked badly. And Packer fans wouldn’t have gotten up and left at the end of the third quarter. That was shameful.

Falcons caught a hot team that has been able to play injury free for the past 4 weeks, so they’ve been able to get much more cohesion. Many of us Packer fans were expecting this all year; a unique combination of play makers on offense and defense.

Of course, the Falcons will be back next year. Their combination on offense is very dangerous. Need to draft for defense. One thing – they’ll play a tougher schedule next year. And they are in a tough division. Solid head coach and organization – they will be back.

drmondo, agreed. I can’t see Owens haning aroudn next year. Just way too inept, really embarrasing. It was hard to believe Smitty said he had to see film before he could say how bad the guy was, and actuall said oh, he did some good things out there. I dont what game he was watching.
I guess they justified Anderson as being some kind of run stopper this year, but they should’ve cut his bait years ago. Major bust. I just hope that they can do something in the draft, get us some talent, cut the dead wood around here, and get some free agents who can play the game. Major list of things to improve. They need to just start telling the truth. Im tired of the coachspeak, tell it like it is.

Are you kidding me about the Falcons? They had the easiest schedule in the NFL! LOL! In Philly, everyone knew that they weren’t going to go to the Superbowl. LOL! The Falcons were predicted to lose the first game in the playoffs. They are a joke! Eagles, Bears, Packers, and Saints are teams that make the NFC division and if they had that same easy ass schedule that the Falcons had they probably would had 1 or 2 losses throughout the season. Sorry to all Falcon fans, but the Falcons are a joke. It’s not that they had a bad game, it’s that they played a real team like all of the other real teams that they’ve lost to in the season. PLEASE!!!! Don’t blame the coach or Falcons. Blame the NFL for making the Falcon players and fans to believe that they were a tough team. The Falcons were humiliated yesterday and looked like College players. The NFL should really think and change the outcome of who makes it to the playoffs and who gets home division. Seattle makes it to the playoffs? Really? Saint’s and Baltimore had to play on the road with only 4 losses on their record to teams with 6 and more losses? Atlanta Falcons played practically nobody teams within the season and masks many people into believing that their actually a threat to every team in the NFC division? C’mon! Soon, a team with 15 wins and 1 lost will be playing in the Wild Card playoff on the road to a team with 10 losses. NFL needs to wake up and need to change some standards! This isn’t the 80’s and 90’s where Wild Card teams were known to not ever win a SuperBowl! It was un-heard of in those days. Today, no one knows what team is going to win the SuperBowl. A Wild Card team can win the SuperBowl. I swear the NFL is doing this on purpose for gambling purposes.

Classless comments reveal classless fans. Some fans ought to keep their mouths shut. The Falcons from the top…ownership, coaches and players have conducted themselves with class even in defeat. From the comments made by some fans you would think they owned the team..that it is their money, their time, their sweat, their risk, their muscle, their effort that is on the line. Atlanta Falcons have some really classy fans, but unfortunately not many of them blog on the AJC. I say, thank you Falcons for a great entertaining season….learn from defeat and go forward!

This team got some lucky bounce this year and won some close games that could have gone the other way. When they were 8 and 2 Coach Smith stated that they had not played a complete game so far in the season, which was very honest of the coach to state the fact. The offense did not play as well as was expected all year, there were flashes when Ryan was very good, but he was not consistent, neither did Turner always run as hard as was expected. Teams realized that it is best to focus on stopping Turner and Ryan was not able to move the sticks when this happened. Ryan is still young and is still developing and should not be compared with Rodgers who sat behind Favre for three years and gained valuable experience. I hope Ryan wil get to his level soon.
UGA BugKiller : I agree with your comments on Mike Smith, and I have stated this on numerous occasions in the past about his conservative approach. As the DC in Jacsonville he had two stud Defensive Tackles
and a very good defense when he went up against New England in the Championship game prior to coming here, and he never once tried to put any pressure on Brady. He is what he is,a very conservative coach who plays to keep it close with the hope that he will sneak out a win in the end. I was surprised when he blitzed Drew Brees as often as he did.
I did not expect the Birds to make it to the Super Bowl at the start of the season, so I will applaud their record. However Dimitroff will need to find some Defensive backs and Linebackers in the Draft. It is also time to find a quick running back to complement Turner and who can take it to the house. It is also time to find a replacement for Gonzalez as it is doubtful he will play after next season. Dimitroff has still not found a Defensive end to rush the passer and complement Abraham and subsequently replace him.
People around here hailed Dimitroff as if he was the next Belicheck or Ted Thompson when it came to drafting talent, but he is yet to find a good defensive back. He missed on Chevis Jackson, Chris Owens, Dontae Robinson and it would seem Dominique Franks. What has happened to Sidbury and how about Jerry the #1 pick of a year ago? Did he miss on them as well?

Jg 497 shut the f**k up if you don’t know what you are talking about. How could the falcons have the easiest schedule and how could the Falcons schedule be easier that that of the saints? The Falcons played common opponents with the Saints and the other teams in the NFC South with the exception of their NFC opponents not in the NFC west. In other words the Falcons, Saints, Bucks and Panthers played against all the teams in the NFC West and the AFC North. For their uncommon opponents the Falcons played the Eagles and the Packers and the Saints played the
1 and 4 Cowboys and the Vikings. Which of the two would have played the harder schedule, I believe the Falcons.

I’m disgusted by the comments on this board. The Packers played well, the Falcons didn’t. That does not make the Falcons a bad team, and the Packers were certainly better than their number 6 ranking, everyone knows that (if nothing else, they were better than the Seahawks who were just lucky enough to win their conference with a losing record), so it’s not like losing to them should be an embarrassment. Plus the Packers have been hot ever since Rodgers returned from his concussion. He’s a great quarterback with a deep group of receivers. But enough about my team.

More importantly, one bad game shouldn’t be a reason to turn against the quarterback or coach… of any team. I applaud the way the Falcons are setting up their future, and I look forward to their coming great seasons and some healthy competition for the Packers. It’s all about patience, it rarely happens that a team turns from a losing team to a Superbowl or even conference champ. Good luck next year Falcons!

Mike Smith- “Underperformed” wow! How about no heart, no focus, laying down, not motivated, forgot assignments, no fundamentals on tackling, too cold inside, no rest, ate too much, partied all night, still in hibernation, had to play the reserves, players bonus wasnt enough.
Excuses, excuses, and not one time did any coach or Falcon apologize to the “Fans” for lack of performance and getting the crap beat out of you.
Their using your beat down as highlights on t.v. and laughing about the shalacking by Greenbay. If it was Greenbay that got beat, i’d understand better. They already played in Philly and beat them so maybe being tired and playing a #1 Seed.
But you guy’s have NO EXCUSE and if i was Arthur Blank i’d have you in my office chewing some butt out.
Stay out of the PLAYOFFS if youre not gonna show up ready to play. Dont build us up with hope because of your season only to lose in the 1st. round.
The Hawks and Braves did that. You should have atleast have the decency to publically apologize to the fan’s not excuses as to why you lost. 10 million people saw that but the fans who braved the cold, bought the tickets, got baby sitters, rescheduled their plans to attend.
Those Fans!
Arthur Blank doesnt deserve a NEW STADIUM. If you want one buy it yourself so that the tax payers arent forced into higher taxes again.
You guy’s make 1000% more than the ordinary Joe anyhow which youre living in the lap of luxury. I’d rather watch Ga. Tech, GSU, and Georgia Bulldogs those arent paid players.
