Now it’s time to deliver, unlike on Monday, which was COMPLETELY unforgivable.

I’ve been a fan since day one, so forgive me if I’m a little sceptical. I would have bet the house the Falcons would have lost to the Saints because, according to there past, that’s what they would do…and it happened. It would not surprise me if the Falcons lost to Carolina and then went one and out in the playoffs. Why? Because that’s their MO. They have no winning tradition and they still don’t know how to win the big one. Beat the Saints and you are in all the way with home field. They lost and now they need help to gain home field advantage throughout. They still don’t know how to win the big one. I hope I am proven wrong this year…I just don’t know.

C’mon Fan Since Nobis, Vikings at Minnesota in ‘98 to go to the Super Bowl (among others) was not a big one? And besides, this is a different team. They simply ran into a good team with more motivation than themselves on Monday. Sunday will be different and so will the playoff games. When it’s do or die this team will DO!

The Panthers are beyond awful. Falcons could play their backups the entire game and probably would still win. The playoff picture is pretty much set for seeds 1 through 5 (I don’t care about the 4 seed, since both those NFC West sacrificial lambs are pretty much interchangeable). The games that determine the 6 seed will be the most interesting ones this weekend — TB/NO, NYG/WAS, and GB/CHI.

I echo JC44’s posts. “Unforgivable” is going overboard. And “need help to gain home field advantage”?? They only need to win one game. Their record after Sunday will be 13-3. That is very respectable! I believe there were a couple of Super Bowl winners that went 9-7 in the regular season.
And what makes game #15 the “big one”. Does the “W” in games 1-14 have less weight? Absolutely not!! Go Falcons!!

The Falcons do not need help to attain the NFCS title, and home field in the playoffs. They have to beat the team with the worst record in the NFL, and it is theirs. Nobody else needs to do anything.
I don’t have the slightest doubt that they will defeat the Panthers.

Losing to your arch-rival at home (or anywhere) is unforgivable. Especially when the world is watching.
Plus, this is the only Atlanta pro sports team that has a clear arch-rival, year-after-year and regardless of either team’s record, so I better not see them lose, and especially not at home.

fan since Nobis—At least we know you don’t understand the playoff picture. We win against Carolina and we clinch homefield advantage throughout the playoffs. So we don’t need help to get it. I can’t believe we have fans that are complaining when our team is going to finish with the best record in the NFC. We will win on Sunday and clinch home field. Our first playoff game will probably be the Saints and our chance to pay them back for taking the pictures on our mid field logo after Monday Night. Let’s go Falcons!! We believe in you and look forward to watching the Super Bowl, probably against the PATS who are going to be diffcult for anyone who faces them but who knows, could be the Steelers, Ravens that make it. I think this is going to be the best playoffs in a long time. NFC is strong with the Falcons, Saints, Eagles, Bears, Packers. Anyone of these teams could make it. GO FALCONS!!

NFL needs to change it’s playoff seeding policy!
I said this to all of my friends 2 years ago when the Patriots were left out of the playoffs with an 11-5 record because someone from the mediocre-at-best 2008 AFC West had to go to the playoffs. Now, we have a NFC West team that’s going to make the playoffs, with a HOME first game I might add, with a 500 or worse record? It’s shameful that a much better team couldn’t get that spot.
I propose the NFL do this:
First, in order for a division to be represented in the playoffs, the division winner must at least have a winning record. Else, the highest-ranked wild card team gets that home playoff game in the first round and the “outside looking in” wild card team gets the last seed. A crazy weak division like the NFC West would just miss out, as they should. If you’re in a division with the seahawks, cardinals, and 49ers and you can’t win more than 7-8 games (when 6 are played against your 3 lowly division mates), you DO NOT deserve a playoff spot.
Secondly, if a potential wild card team (lower than 6th seed) has a record 2 games or better than the division winner of a weak division, the same scenario unfolds. Weak division gets to try again next year. For example, in Mr. Ledbetter’s article above, the Giants or Bucs at 10-6 would be 2 games or more better than the rams, thus gaining them a spot in the playoffs as the final seed.
The NFL really needs to look at this. An 8-8 or 7-9 team could have a first round home playoff game against a team with 10, 11, or even 12 wins. That’s just plain stupid.
Commish, get your head outta your rear, stop fining players for stupid crap, and fix this NFL.

Anyone who has been a Falcon fan since game one (as am I) who has one word of criticism about this years team is clearly insane. The Falcons since the arrival of the new regime have the exact same regular season record as the Saints. In two pressure packed games against the Super Bowl Champions Atlanta and N.O have scored forty one points with both winning road games. We’re just in the third year with this group and already are talking home field advantage and legitimately the Super Bowl. Four more wins and the Falcons are NFL champions. Who in [Hades] can complain about that??

I think that the only thing that would help us get over the anger of losing against the “Aints” is, for them to come back here during the playoffs and we beat the crap out of them. Our defense held up very well, our coaching staff could have had a more proactive move for the offense. Points should have been on that board and “especially” after John Abraham interception. Im tired of the comentaters crapping on the Falcons. Please take it to the Super bowl baby!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shut there mouths like the Giants did against the undefeated Patriots years ago. And who cares about the record of a division winner. The rules do not say you have to have a better record than the other teams in the conference to win your division.
The home games are reserved for division winners. If you dont like watching your 12-4 (or 11-5) team travel to the NFC West division winner, then dont lose so much.
The real travesty would be to allow wild card teams to host any playoff games.

I’m constantly amazed at the naysayers on this blog. Just a suggestion…if you don’t like the way our team has played this year, and aren’t thankful for Coach Smith, Thomas Dimitroff, Mr. Blank and our wonderful team…go take a hike! It’s fine to make thoughtful suggestions and offer observations that you think are worthy of consideration, but to just slam the Falcons because you don’t think they are a good team is lame at best. It also shows that you know absolutely nothing about Pro Football and should just concentrate on your “Professional” wrestling instead. I, for one, have loved the Falcons since I attended my first game against the Rams in 66 (the “real” LA Rams), and I won’t be a fair-weather fan regardless of their record!

The only reasonable expectation for any team is to have a chance to win each game. NO and ATL played a tough game. If they did it again, it could just as easily go the other way. The NO loss does not diminish what ATL has done this year.

The Monday night game meant more to NO than it did to us. They needed a win to get in and we are already in. We just need to take care of business on Sunday. I’m not going to crap on the Falcons for the N.O., but I do understand where everyone is coming from who is upset with it. To be great, a good Falcons team needs to beat good teams and N.O. was a good and finally healthy team going into Monday night’s game. What I take away from it, though, is if the Falcons got exposed then the Falcons organization sees what it needs to fix before going into the playoffs. I’m not saying I’m glad they lost, but I would rather for them to see where they need to improve and get it fixed than beating everyone, thinking they are awesome and get smoked in the playoffs. Sometimes being humbled brings about excellence in the future.
I don’t know if the Falcons will make it to the Super Bowl, but I tell you as one of the 71,000 “12th Man” in the stands in GA Dome when the playoff come to Atlanta, I will “Rise Up” to make it difficult for the opposing team to operate. We should win this game Sunday and I believe we will but it can not be overlooked that any team can beat another if they’re not prepared. There is no reason to think the Falcons wont be prepared and the Panthers would love to spoil our chance at home field. The Falcons had a great season this year even with some conservative offensive play along with strong efforts at going for yards on fourth down there is no team they should be feared of exspecially if the defense play like they did on Monday night minus the missed sacks they could have had. Long as we play smart and not stubborn by trying to run something that’s not working and make adjustments to what the other team is giving us we can make it to Super Bowl 45 and win it.

@sknfan:
The Falcons strugglles can be related directly with some of their conservative play on offense. Unfortunatley when we get a lead the Falcons go into safety mode by trying to do things other than what got them the lead. We stubbornly try to run Mike Turner up the middle when he has no where to go rather than letting Matt Ryan spread the offense to retain the ball and keep scoring the defense have a few flaws as well but most times than not they seem to make the correct adjustments while the offense doesn’t.

The way they play is just Falcons football right now. This team is built to pound the ball with Turner and Snelling and win time of possession. Their plan is to keep the other team’s offense off the field. Heck, that’s seems to be the only way to beat Tom Brady, keep him on the sideline….LOL! They hope that running the ball effectively will then set up the pass. If the run isn’t successful, then it falls solely on Matt’s shoulders, as it did on Monday. The defense has been pretty solid, but they are typically “bend but don’t break”. At any rate, this team isn’t built to be explosive and quick striking; they are built to just beat you up. Although it may seem that they are struggling, they’ve been successful with their style of play.

It seems everyone is thinking the aints will come back to play us in the first playoff game. Of course they will be the favorites to beat Seattle/ St Louis and they probably will win. However, Green Bay is quite capable of beating the Eagles with their defense, and their offense is very potent even without a running game. So if that’s the case we get to play GB and NO goes to Chicago.

Why do the Falcons struggle? As I’ve said here before, I think the they’re about two players (or maybe one season) away from being the team Smith and Dimitroff are building them to be. Having also been a fan since Nobis, I can empathize with @Fan Since Nobis (above). Years of Falcons collapses make you instinctively expect the worst.
This team is different. I’m not so surprised its record is 12-3. On the other hand, I’m a little nervous going into the playoffs. But, with Mike Smith in charge, losses are no longer inevitable. The Birds may lose, but, like Monday’s loss to NO, they won’t “get beat.”
I used to follow sports car racing, and the Falcons remind me of a first-class racing team that is developing into a world beater. All the components — designer, driver, mechanics, manager, etc. — have to come together and get in sync. When they do, they win consistently. Since 1966, the Falcons have never put three consecutive quality seasons together until now. The future is bright.

I hate the getting beat by the aints as much as any fan. What is amazing to me, which took a few days to feel this way, is the Falcons almost beat the defending champs with a blatant vanilla offense. If that fumble had not occured by Turner we’d all be praising Mularkey’s 4-5 play game plan.

I respectfully disagree. With the parity of NFL teams nowadays it is extremely hard to consistently win. Hey Fan since Nobis. I too have been a Falcons fan since day 1, was there when Nobis and co beat the (St. Louis) Cardinals the first season, saw fans tear down the goal posts. That was a long time and a lot of losing seasons ago. This team is different, and different from the top down. Coach Smith (and staff) should be coach of the year. This defense can play with anyone in the league-anyone. Without a couple of offensive snafu’s Monday night the game would’ve gone the other way, and Sunday’s game would be meaningless. But now it means something, and the coaches know it, the team knows it. As said by a few before, they know what they need to do and that was made clear in Monday’s game. It would’ve been nice to win but I think that loss may be the catalyst to go all the way. It’s been a long time (1980??) since this team has even been thinking about home field advantage thru the playoffs. Go Falcons and I may have to make the trip down from Greenville to see you win this one.

While I don’t yet the the Falcons as a Super Bowl team I certainly they are as capable as any team in the NFC of getting there. The Bears, Eagles, Saints, and Falcons are all pretty even with the edge to the Saints because they were there last year. I would suggest everyone stop looking back and just focuse on the future which is the Panthers. The Falcons will beat that team and get home field advantage. From there the Falcons will have something to prove to themselves and to us their fans.

Saying that the falcan’ts beat themselves, as opposed to the Saints owning them, strikes me as a bit “revisionist”. The Saints held the ball for 15 minutes of the last 20 minutes. ran 34 plays to atlanta’s 11. Kinda hard to beat yourself when you don’t have the ball!

What I would worry about Seen is the Falcons was on the verg of beating the aints with a vanilla game plan that consisted of 4-5 plays. You know and so does everyone else if Turner and McCluer(sp) hadn’t had uncharateristic fumbles the Falcons would had pulled it off. And by the way BirdDawg24 the aints could use one more fan.

Here’s an excerpt from an article from ESPN.com’s Bill Simmons. He’s giving his picks for the Week 17 games, and mentions this about the Falcons. I agree wholeheartedly:
Enduring lesson from 2010: You can’t win a Super Bowl by playing it safe. Atlanta’s offense played missionary position football for four quarters and blew a winnable Saints game on Monday; it was almost like Marty Schottenheimer had put on a Mike Smith mask and hijacked the team. If the Falcons play that passively in January, they will lose just like Marty always did. Mark my words. Take it to the bank. Lock it down. End of story. Period. Fin. (And any other authoritative and slightly condescending conclusion you want to put here.)

Dang it Seen, use your own material. You are soooo gullible. Hook line and sinker. The thing is Seen, we are all use to seeing Breesus throwing int’s this year so with every game that’s a given. But Turner having a fumble, that hadn’t happened in over 400+ carries, so that was luck for you guys. LOL!! This is fun. The aints game didn’t matter! All the birds have to do now is take care of business at home this week against the lowly panthers and dome field advantage is theirs. Knowing they would likely face the aints for the third time in the playoffs (a game that WILL matter), TD and Smitty wisely elected to hold their cards close to their vest. Why show the defending champs their hand in a meaningless game? The aints were likely to have won it anyway because they needed it more. So what if a few talking-heads on ESPN disrespect the birds. We’ve got ‘em right where we want ‘em. Rise up!

Re MNF, the Saints and Falcons coaches and staff know each other so well, the “not showing your hand” theory is plausible. But this was the equivalent of a playoff game. We all know the Falcons can play just about any kind of game. I guess I expected them to adjust and become more pass oriented, but Ryan’s numbers to anyone other than RW or TG was atrocious. No cause for alarm, but the Saints game proved that RW, TG, and MT can be shutdown. In crunch time, somebody else is going to have to step up their game.
I’m confident we’ll beat Carolina, but I’m not as confident as I was before the MNF game that we’ll get to the SB.

I’m hoping that the Bucs can rise up this weekend and beat the Saints at the Superdome. Now that, along with a Falcons win, will make my 2011 year get off to a great start. GO FALCONS!!!!!
Hopefully Mularkey will not stiffle the offense with those same old plays that did not work against the Saints. I am still hoping that some team will come take him away from the Falcons (and I really don’t care who gets him as their head coach) so that next year we’ll have a better offensive coordinator who utilizes the talent of the skilled players on offense.
Where are the adjustments that need to be made throughout the game??????? The same is true for the defense….they blitzed Brees all day long except for the last Saints drive which is definitely the time that they should have been in his face. Conservative coaching will only take this team so far. I’m glad with the winning record this year, but I’m concerned about the coaching during the playoffs.

Perhaps it is time for all of the bandwagon fans, to disembark.
If you can’t handle losing three out of fifteen games(2 of them to 2010 Div. winners, and 1 to the defending SB Champs) this season, making the playoffs, more than probable NFCS Championship, and home field throughout the playoffs, from a team that is in the 3rd year of a rebuild, that came out of the ashes of a total disaster.
Then might I suggest you take up golf, ping-pong, or something.

A missed glorified extra point that was so automatic, it was attempted on 1st down is the only reason the Falcons were not swept by New Orleans AGAIN! The game at our home where we are supposed to be unbeatable had our Offense limited to ONE SCORING DRIVE that was HALF penaty yards! We cant keep hoping for mistakes or penalties to win us a game!
We have one game to fix our Offense against the worst team in NFL which will not help much, a week off, then see the Saints again, except this time they have Ivory and a running game! Say your prayers for more helps from refs and for them to make big mistakes because otherwise, WE ARE ONE AND DONE in PLAYOFFS! Just a fact, look at the game stats and lie to yourselves all you want, we tried our best to win and got COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN! Gotta love the Atlanta sports team DNA that always chokes in end!

The offensive play callin looked vanilla because the Sants D was taking everything away and did a spectacular job. They were able to take away Turner, White, and Gonzalez….that is 95% of the playbook! Listen to the post gam interviews, plays were called deep, intermidiate, etc, they just werent available without throwing into double or triple coverage and Brees is the only one that dares to make those throws! He might have a lot of interceptions because of it, but he also leads the league in TD’s and most of the other stats.
Really upsetting that Brees has the gaul to grab Abraham after interception and tackle him to save the game, yet when the center misnaps the ball, Ryan looks at it and jumps back like a scared little girl! Most QB’s would have dove on top of it! ANGRY!!

Get on the train or get off it man. The Falcons are 12-3 for Godsakes! There have been PLENTY of teams that have lost to division rivals in the last few weeks of the season and won Super Bowls! In fact there is a very good chance that we will play play the Saints again the playoffs and when we do, we will beat them! Losses happen in the NFL, especially to division opponents. We beat them at their place, and they beat us at ours. The Falcons are 19-2 at home under Ryan. The probability of the Saints beating us TWICE at home( especially with the Falcons coming off a bye) is not high. Which would you rather have: Beating the Saints twice in the regular season and losing to them in the playoffs? Or splitting the series 1-1 in the regular season when you already have a 2 game lead in the division, and then playing the rubber match after a bye in the playoffs in a play where you hardly ever lose? Scenario 2 sounds a LOT better wouldn’t you agree?

defense win 99 percent of the time get out of that old scheme 4/3 step into the big boy league 3/4 hybrid, we could match up better w/ those 4 & 5 wide receiver sets the pressure would not allow the receivers time to get out on there routes. The Saints had Lady Luck on their side..let’s not forget that. It was a fluke. Their first touchdown was on a fluke dropped snap. Falcons probably would’ve scored but Turner fumbled it for the first time in over 400 touches (it was the longest active streak in the NFL)…obviously a fluke. They had two punts that went about 15 yards, followed by a 35 yard bounce. Should the Falcons have played better? Without a doubt. With a little less luck going towards the Saints, the Falcons win that game. Anyways, it won’t matter provided we win tomorrow.

The offense was atrocious on Monday. I expect it to be better when they get a rematch after the wild card game. The defense kept the game close. I can wait for the Falcons to put together a game when Offense, Defense and Special Teams have great games. As for not winning the big games, the winning tradition has begun under the Mike Smith era. Three winning seasons in a row, top 3 record over the last three years. Exciting Stuff!

If the falcons cashed in all opportunities, they would be 29-0 in a 16 games season. falcons had over 3 minutes to score and go ahead. they did not because they are not that good. Other words, falcons should have been 4-11 going to the final game:
Lost Pittsburgh 0-1
Won Arizona 1-1
*Lost New Orleans 1-2
*Lost San Francisco 1-3
*Lost Cleveland 1-4
Lost Philadelphia 1-5

Won St. Louis 2-8
Lost Green Bay 2-9
*Lost Tampa Bay 2-10
