Falcons head coach Mike Smith screams at an official after a first down catch by Roddy White was called back by a penalty, killing a Falcons drive during 1st half action against the Saints. Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com

Falcons coach Mike Smith was gracious in his post-game media session.

He gave the Saints credit for shutting down the offense and explained his fourth quarter decision to give the ball back to the Saints so they could basically run the clock out.

Here’s what he had to say:

OPENING STATEMENT: “I thought it was a very hard fought ballgame tonight. It was two pretty good football teams playing against each other. I liked the preparation throughout the week; we just didn’t get the outcome that we wanted. Defensively, I thought we had a good plan and executed it; we just didn’t make some plays. We left some plays out there. We did some things very uncharacteristic in terms of turnovers in the ballgame. We’ll regroup, we’ll get back together, and we’ll put this one behind us. Again, we still like where we’re at, I can assure you of that. We’ve got to get this one behind us as quick as possible and move on to the Carolina Panthers.”

ON THE OFFENSE’S JAGGED PERFORMANCE: “I’ll credit New Orleans, they did some good things today. We were not very efficient on third down which is something we have been very good at all season. We have not been turning the football over and we had two uncharacteristic turnovers that I think were critical in the game. They did a nice job in defending us. It wasn’t our best effort and a lot of it has to do with the way that we played. “

ON THE DECISION TO PUNT: “Definitely thought it was the right thing to do. It was fourth down and six with the ball out their 38, 39-yard line maybe even a little bit further out. But on fourth and six we felt like the way that we’d been playing defensively and we had two timeouts and we hopefully could wrap one around the two-minute warning. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done there at the end.”

ON WHETHER THE DEFENSE GOT TIRED: “I don’t believe so. We didn’t execute very well on that one drive. The other score was a short field after a turnover and I thought we kept our rotation like we wanted to. They made the plays. It’s the typical game when these two teams meet, since I’ve been here, there’s only been one game that hasn’t been at eight points or less. Most of them are at two or three or four point games.”

ON THE NO-HUDDLE: “We moved the ball down in the no-huddle. Again, we felt like it was in our best interest to get back in and huddle. What they were doing in the no-huddle was the same thing they were doing defending us when we were huddling. We felt that it was the right thing to do at that point in time at the game.”

ON THE PRESSURE ON BREES: “I think we had a very good plan in terms of getting pressure on the quarterback. I think we left a number of plays out there in terms of getting QB Drew (Brees) on the ground. He did a good job extending plays. It was a well-designed game plan and I thought the guys went out and executed it. We just did not always finish the plays. You can see why Drew Brees is a Pro Bowl player in terms of being able to extend plays. He was able to do that tonight.”

ON REGROUPING: “We’ll put this one behind us as quick as possible. The outcome we didn’t get tonight, but we still like where we’re at I can assure you that. I think there’s probably 15 teams that would want to trade with us so I like where we’re at. We didn’t get the outcome. I’m disappointed but not discouraged because there was some really good football played out there tonight by both football teams.”

ON RYAN’S PLAY: “Until I watch the tape I’m not going to make an evaluation. I know we weren’t as efficient on third down like we have been. We’ve been a very good third down football team. We didn’t run the ball statistically. Again, until I watch the tape I’m not going to make any statements about how our guys played. I know they played hard tonight and it was a hard fought football game. That’s two good football teams going at it, slugging it out and they were the better team tonight. My hat’s off to Head Coach Sean (Payton) and his staff.”

ON WHETHER HE’S CONCERNED ABOUT THE RUN GAME: “No, not at all. We didn’t get the yards that we would have liked to tonight. It wasn’t as efficient, but this is a football team that at the core of what we do is running the football. We will always be a team that’s going to run it. We just didn’t do it very well tonight. Again, you have to talk about the whole body of work. We’re talking about one night, but this is a good football team. There’s a bunch of guys in there that are disappointed but not discouraged. We’ll put this behind us and move on.”

Sometimes a little blood in your mouth isn’t a bad thing. When we dropped the game to Philly early this year we went on a terror up until tonight against the Saints. If we were going to lose a game prior to the playoffs I would much rather lose this one to keep us focused on what other teams will do against us in the playoffs all while keeping us hungry/humble after a loss at home.

People are constantly saying that we (The Falcons) don’t get media respect. The media expects us to be one and done in the playoffs. Now that we have this recent loss we can forget all about having people respect us and go out and win games. If you want respect you have to earn it….

We will have an opportunity to make it to the big stage this year in Dallas. This loss gives us a blue print on what we need to improve upon going forward.

Falcons Rise Up!!!!

Was at the game. Disappointed, but it was still a fun game to watch. Biggest play in my mind was the Turner fumble. He had nothing and should have just taken the no gain. Groan. Disagree with Coach Mike — should have gone for it on the fourth down…

Hate to say I told you so, payback is a mother. You falcants fans keep with your bs talk like your team has won a super bowl. Holler at me when you have that vince Lombardi trophy attached to your team’s name. The champs know how to play on the big stage, the falcants are not yet ready for primetime.

Defense played great, offense struggled badly. But coach smith is right, this is one game and if you look at the body of work, it’s pretty good. I like our chances, we will beat the panthers and secure home field and no one is looking forward to coming into the Georgia dome in the playoffs. Go falcons!

I would like to have heard his thoughts on the offsetting pass interference (what a joke) and the horrible spot on the third-down play on the Saints’ final drive.

Bottom line … the Falcons have to put this one behind them. The division title, the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the first-round bye and home-field advantage are all theirs with a win over Carolina.

“Martin,” your players stomped on the Falcons’ logo and took pictures at midfield after the game. Funny for the defending Super Bowl champs to be celebrating a wild-card berth in the playoffs and no home games.

Martin is a dumb as*. To get to the super bowl, you will still come through Atlanta. The saints had a great year and deserve respect after winning the super bowl. But let’s not forget that you won it last year which has nothing to do with this year. We did win in there house this year. Your not the pats or steelers, you have one super bowl victory. After this year, we may have one to match.

Sure ,Martin, I suppose we’d really have to run 16 straight in order to make a statement, huh? Very uncharacteristic play from our Birds tonight. I love the distance we’ve traveled in the last 3 years! I for one am still enjoying the ride. Win the rest and we can fast forward over this game in the ‘10 NFL Film season review.Looks like that final game I will be attending now has significance.

This bites. I couldn’t see the second half cause of work, but followed on my phone. When I saw Turner gaining zero yards and gametracker paused a long time, I thought ‘fumble’. I guess what goes around comes around, cause I was thinking of our own goal-line strip awhile back. I’m not talking smack anymore. Saints beat us fair and square and were the better team on the field today. Let’s put it behind us and whip Carolina next week. Congrats Saints fans. If your team is really that good, you’ll be welcome to visit our house one more time for some good ‘ol Southern payback. Falcons fans rise up!

This guy (Mike Smith) needs to be running for political office — not attempting to coach a football team. All that drivel and he has yet to address a single issue. If I were the owner of this team, I’d offer Sean Payton 20 million a year to come and lead these Falcons. A lot of lost souls seem to think Coach is saving all his offense for the Super Bowl. What Super Bowl?? The Saints play all out offense all of the time, every play of every game, all of the time!! Where did that approach ever get them? Oh yeah. Winners of the Super Bowl. If the Falcons want to run the most boring offense, perhaps in the history of football, go one and done in the playoffs — then so be it. We are a running football team. Good luck, man. You are attempting to compete in a pass first football league. The game changed some 20 years ago. You don’t get it. You never will. You are boring. And you will never win a Super Bowl. I doubt you’ll see an NFC championship game. And if you do, you’ll lose that. One would think an always running football team would at least have a running back. One astute blogger allowed Michael “THE BURNER” Turner must have concrete blocks on his cleats. Can’t run the sweep and can’t run between the tackles against champion caliber teams. But we run it ’till we are blue in the face. Run right on out of the playoffs. Ryan could pass for 300, 400 yards a game if turned loose. Lastly, football is entertainment. This team is boring and predictable. Turn it loose. Air it out. At least look like you are trying to WIN the football game! That’s all a fan wants out of his team’s coach. If you don’t have the talent to play that style of football — get it. If that is not in your nature or make up — sell insurance for a career…

“DB Brian Williams if he lays Drew Breeze square on his azz like Vangorder designed the scheme the Falcons would have easily won this game” I repeat do not throw this “Blitzindg defense away”-

Lo and behold we went passive if everyone looks at the game winning drive by the aint’s you will see straight zone coverage the blitzing went bye bye.

It’s very obvious to me and the whole world Turner the Burner tires are going flat, think Draft now…We need a fire starter Norwood is well missed, moving on our superstar cornerback is not a star D.Robinson has no Int’s zip -Grimes Mighty Mouse get’s beat constantly on slant routes so does Robinson. It’s toilet paper at corner out there holding up a leak there service-able not elite.nt
Sherod Rowdy White- where was he besides the TD slant…Jenkins stepped up his game today.Harry no show Douglass..Tony Gonzalez was absent..

The offensive game plan to me looked flat I hope they were saving the best meals for tor the playoff’s, they looked like they had no swagger.I would love to see Matty Ice stay in the sugar huddle he work’s best without that lard back there running smack into his offensive linemen Turner best days were before he hurt his knee last year now he runs timid.

WHERE’the Burn Burner..I hope this was a dummy offense -we need to draft some speed for this Matt Ryan Kid. The only hope for this Defense is to keep blitzing.

This was a defensive struggle all night and all it was going to take was one or two miscuses and the team that took advantage of the miscues would win. That is what happened. This game never should have come down to whether we went for it on 4 and 6 with less than 3 minutes to play.

Hats off to the Falcons defense. They played a good game with constant pressure on Drew Brees but without the 4 or 5 almost sacks, they did not rattle Brees. They did put pressure on him and make him do two major miscues. One led to a touchdown. The other one did not. Coach Smith PLEASE do not stop with the blitzes. They gave the Falcons a chance to win and hurried the quarterback. The prevent defense has only allowed the quarterback to sit back there and wait for someone to get open. With more practice, we will get the 4 – 6 sacks a game and keep the quarterback rattled.

The offense just did not have it tonight. Although the announcers did not show it or mention it, White and Gonzales were almost completely shut down in the 2nd half. The Saints saw the same thing we have seen in our last 8 games. Matt depends way too much on hitting White or Gonzales too much. If you take them out of the picture, Matt has to throw to Jenkins, Douglas and Finneran or one of the back out of the backfield. I don’t remember seeing one screen or end around tonight by our offense. They did not mix it up enough and Ryan had to improvise more. I don’t know how we fix that in the time we have left before the playoffs but I assure you all of the teams we might play watched this game and they will try to take Roddy and Tony out of the game plan so we better either come up with some plays that get them open, even when they are being double teamed, find a way to get our back involved without just doing handoffs or it will be a short stint in the playoffs for us.

To our credit, if we score when Burner fumbled or we did not give them the short field with the bad snap, it would probably be a different story. However, they are probably thinking if Drew did not get that attempted floater and Davis got it or Abraham tipped the ball the beatdown would have been worse. Winning tonight’s game would have made a great statement. Losing the game should show what we need to improved to make us better for the playoffs. GO Falcons!!!!

Matt did not make the plays today. He had an opportunity to put this game to bed after Abraham’s interception and didnt manufacture any points! If he has ambitions to lead the Falcons to the Superbowl this season, he must STEP UP and MAKE winining PLAYS. The defense bailing out the offense is becoming a pattern for the Falcons and that is bound to result in elimination came playoff. Matt: forget the past; start making big and critical plays that win games!

The Aints shut down the Falcons offense because it doesn’t have one. Run Turner, run Turner, and try to run Turner again. WTF are they going to learn Turner is NOT a good running back? Stop his feet and you stop him. Fine. But then we have no other plays in the book? We can’t take advantage of Abraham’s interception to put points on the board? Mike&Mike…one of them is being very stubborn and taking the wind out of our guys. If they think they’re going into the playoffs with this offense (run game mentality) and win they’ll be gone by the first round–AGAIN!!! Very disappointing that we did this to ourselves. The Aints didn’t beat us, we beat ourselves from mistake after mistake.

Oh and this team needs to hit the tackling dummy everyday–because they can’t seem to tackle Brees when he’s right there for the taking. Williams misses all night long. Moore misses him as well. Shoot, no one seemed to be able to wrap him up and snatch him to the ground except Abraham.

after giving up a 6 minute 90 yard drive in their last defensive series why did Smith have the impression that the Falcons were going to be able to get the ball back? They got it with under 3 minutes left and they have to figure it’s 4 down territory no matter what yard line they are on. The playoffs require a more aggressive mind set than Smith and Malarky have. You can’t beat the really good teams playing scared. Hopefully this will teach them something. ( remember the 4th and 1 on Pitts. 5 yard line the first game of the year? kick a tying field goal and lose in overtime. Win the game, instead of playing not to lose…..)

Both teams played what I thought was one of the premier games of the season. My hats off to both sides – and don’t forget, we will, most likely, see the Saints again in a few weeks in the playoffs.

The Falcons did one thing last night that they have not done all season long: They lost the time of possession battle. They did not control the clock like they have all season. I think this is something they must get back in control of, or this will be a short playoff season for us.

Otherwise – even though they were on the losing side – it was a fanastic game. I enjoyed every minute of it until NO made that last first down.

Oh – and the ref’s really blew some major calls last night that cost us. Just an observation – not an excuse.

You mean to tell me that at the goal line and ready to score, you dont have another play designed besides Turner into the brick wall two straight plays? They probably would have ran it three straight plays if he hadnt a fumbled!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately everything this team does is based on the “play not to lose” mentality. The coaches are happy with it and A. Blank either doesn’t recognize it or doesn’t know any better. They won’t continue to blitz. Heck , they STOPPED blitzing on N.O.’s last drive. The offense will continue to SHUT DOWN after we get a 3 point league. The coaches are good enough to keep their jobs but not good enough to win the big ones.

So we split the season………..the Saints didn’t look like champions last night either. We had the talent and team to beat them (again) and we shot ourselves in the foot. But that’s ok because if we have to see them again in the playoffs I know we will win. I would not want to have to beat them 3 times in a season, nor would they us. I have no problem with the officiating last night except for the ref calling interference on both players, the ref had to call the interference on the Saints because everyone saw it but then to add interference on both players was a clear intention to negate the play………..a drive killer. We abandoned the running game so early and I am not sure why, you have to keep pounding to put a defense down. Would have liked to seen some passes to Finn but I guess he has to be on the field to accomplish that. Anyway, as a NFL fan a pretty good game, as a Falcons fan it was theirs for the taking and they didn’t do it. Let’s focus on Carolina, time to move on and finish this march to N Collins St, Arlington, TX Feb. 6th.

So what if the Saints stomped on your logo. The FalCants should have played the same game they played all year and beat us up. Blame Roddy White for that gesture by the Saints. For the most part we in South Louisiana ignored the ignorant remarks of Roddy White earlier in the week. He did not live here through the tough times after those storms, so he and most of you have no clue. The folks in my town shrugged off his stupid comments. I guess the stomp was our way of paying back that ignorant dude for his inhumane comments. As far as the Super Bowl goes you folks should come and take a look at the Vince Lombardi trophy that we own or maybe the Saints could have shown you all their Super Bowl rings after the game last night. We have what you want in Atl! Most folks are cool here if we don’t go back to the Big Bowl Game. I love the way Atl is feeding off the Saints success. Not mad at my Birds, even though we GAVE the Saints that game. Nobody had us winning 12 games this season, let alone taking this division, which we will STILL do.

Key plays that killed us:

1. Double pass interference call that nullified a 29 yard Roddy White catch. Refs just plain F’ed that up.

2. Michael Jenkins offensive pass intereference. He’s guilty, plain and simple.

3. Todd McClure botching the snap. Freak accident, but it was a killer.

4. Turner fumble.

That’s the difference in the game, really.

Not mad at my Birds though. Still proud. Now go and beat down those Panthers and take what is ours.

Very entertaining game. Falcon D was more aggressive than I’ve seen them all year. Offense was more vanilla than I’ve seen them all year. Decision to punt was a mistake…we had just given up a long drive and the defense was tired. At that point in the game, I think we have a better chance of converting a 4th and 6, than forcing a 3-and-out.

BTW, Michael Turner is not built to run to sideways…he’s built to run down hill…too much lateral movement last night.

The Falcons will be fine as long as they take care of Carolina next week. As a matter of fact, this loss might be a good thing…a little reality check heading into post-season play.

And looking ahead, if the Falcons secure the 1-seed and the Saints end up a 5 seed, the Saints will go to St. Louis or Seattle for their wild card game. And if they win (and the 6th seed loses), guess who the Falcons get first round?

Buckle your chin, strap, strap, strap…

Coaches lost this game. Offense was horrible due to the play calling. It was obvious early that neither team could do much running the ball. New Orleans went to Plan B and started passing more. Although they did not get many points doing this, they were able to gain time of possession stats. The Falcons continued to run with little results. You must change up when your plan is not working. Coach Smith blew it late with the punt. How embarrassing. This loss gives New Orleans the upper hand if they come again to the
Dome in the playoffs. Coaches should openly admit they blew it instead of talking around the failure of their game plan and inability to change it.

I agree that play calling and continuing to run into 8-10 man fronts cost the game. Where were the screens to Snelling, some misdirection plays? Ryan was not comfortable in pocket, timeing was off. Screens and rollouts would counteract that. I blame Mularkey, and Smith for wanting him to call it that way.

While I will agree that Turner’s fumble on the 1-yd line was the backbreaker, the Saints seemed to have all the breaks:

Officiating
Shanked punt that rolled an additional 30 yards

Coach Smith and non-quarterback Ryan – how much were you paid to throw the game? If you want to win a game you have to play like you want to win a game. Everything from the time that Ryan walked onto the field to the non-running – fat ass turner showed that Atlanta Falcons were not hungry for a win! Only the FANS are hungry for a win, for the Division title, for a Superbowl ring. What is it going to talk for the Atlanta Falcons owner, staff, coaches and team to have that same hunger? It was a pretty stinking game!

Both of these defenses were playing absolutely out of their minds in this game, that is an offensive juggernaut that we held to 17 points (even though there should have been about 3 more sacks than there was). The Saints totally shut down Turner as well and had some good coverage.

The officials really riled me up on this one though. The offsetting pass interference was total crap, the Shockey catch hit the ground, and there was no booth review on the second down run at the end, which made it 3rd and inches instead of 3rd and 1-2.

I’m also of the mind that Smith should have considered our last drive 4 down territory the whole way and have the game called as such. You can’t give Drew Brees the ball and able to win the game with 3 minutes left, regardless of how the defense looked all night.

I hope this is a big motivator for this team, they need to take care of business next week or it will be a colossal melt down.

JT,

Roddy White is entitled to his own opinion, he called y’all Aints, just like almost everyone was calling y’all prior to last year, what was so horrible about what he tweeted, and besides, it was his personal Tweets (Freedom of Speech), he didn’t mention anything that was downright degrading about N.O. He was simply adding on to the bitter rivalry that has existed between these two teams for years.. Get over It! Tough Times come and go, its what you and your city do/make of it!! With the exception Hurricane Katrina and the ‘96 Olympics, Atlanta and New Orleans were very similiar cities at one point in time,i.e High Homicide Rates, Notorious Section 8 Complexes, Large African American Communities, etc. We take a lot of pride in our cities (or at least the overall Home Grown Sections that are trying not to become extinct) in each other cities, we always travel to each other’s Stadiums (Dome’s) each year trash talking the other teams and talking sh*t on these blogs. So of course, trash talk and perhaps unsportsman like style actions are expected to occur. Don’t worry JT and other (AINT’S) Fans, we will welcome you again in a few weeks to the Dome but only with a different outcome this time so that we can stop hearing the played out ” We got our SuperBowl Ring/Lombari Trophy Last Year” Talk…..

The team played a good game, however, they have three big problems heading into the playoffs. 1) We have herrendous play calling, particularly on 3rd down, the offensive coordinator needs to step up his game or go. 2) Stop trying to run Turner wide, he’s minus 20 yards for year trying to run wide, he doesn’t have the speed…again play calling. 3) We HAVE very poor tackling, RB’s are gaining 3 to 4 yards after initial contact. We need more speed in the back field and we need to stop thinking that Matt Ryan is going to pull us out of the fire each and every time.

You never want to lose the ballgame, but I think this might turn out to be a silver lining for the Birds. After getting that bitter taste of a loss in their mouth’s, they now have to play to win against the Panthers. Plus, I think it’s pretty obvious these two teams are gonna end up seeing each other again, and you know what they say about beating a team three times in a season.

This team lost one game in the last 9, this one hurt but I would rather have a loss now and have our team know that feeling and not want it again this year. Come on, people!! We lost a heartbreaker to a very good football team that we beat earlier in the year. Stop blaming the coach, the players, etc. The winning streak was bound to end sometime. I’d rather it end now than in the playoffs. Get a grip!! The Falcons played a great game tonight, particularly on defense. They just came up a few plays too short. Look at it this way: it is rare that a team can beat a good opponent 3 times in one season. If we had to lose a game to the Saints, better now than in the playoffs. The Falcons will wrap up the division and home field advantage on Sunday. No way will we lose to the pathetic Panthers. The Falcons are going to the Super Bowl!!!!

Up until last night the Falcons were on an 8 game winning streak and tied with the Patriots for the best record in the NFL. One loss on Monday Night Football to the Saints isn’t the end of the world. As a matter of fact I think there is a such thing as a good loss and I think the Falcons will regroup and come out stronger than ever next week against the Panthers, finish 13-3 and get Home Field advantage in the Playoffs. The game could’ve easily went either way and a rematch in the playoffs would serve as the rubber game in the 3 game series for the year. Go Falcons!!!

COACHING FAILURE!
Earth to Falcons coaching staff: Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Michael Jenkins, and Tony Gonzalez are the offensive engines of this team. Micheal Turner is only one man.

OUR DEFENSE PLAYED AT A LEVEL THAT WOULD LET ATLANTA BEAT ANY TEAM IN THE NFL. OUR OFFENSE PLAYED WITH ONE ARM TIED BEHIND ITS BACK BECAUSE OF THE PLAY CALLING!! TWO catches for Gonzalez and THREE CATCHES for Roddy White SAYS IT ALL

WE HAVE A CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER TEAM WITH A COACH CALLING HIGH SCHOOL TYPE PLAY SEQUENCES!

DO YOU READERS THINK WE CAN WIN A SINGLE PLAYOFF GAME IF WE OPERATE OUR OUR OFFENSE THIS WAY?

WE WILL BE PLAYING GOOD TEAMS (PROBABLY NEW ORLEANS AND PHILADELPHIA) WHO HAVE GREAT COACHES. ONE LOSS AND WE ARE OUT! BOTH OF THESE TEAMS ALREADY HAVE OUR NUMBER (OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING SEQUENCE)!!!

I have said this MANY times in posts during the year. Our play calling is too predictable!!! It is obvious that NEW ORLEANS knew our usual sequence of how Mike Malarkey calls the plays. We were beaten before the initial kick-off.

There are too many Turner runs on first and second down when he has 0, -1, -2, -3, ,,,, -5 yards to put the team in a no-win situation. Then Matt Ryan is under pressure to make a first on third down.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU READERS SEEN THIS HAPPEN THIS YEAR? And last year?

I am not a football coach but if I see the tendency, the NEW Orleans coaches certainly see the tendency. After the Jenkins interference in the end zone, our objective should have been to score points NOT to prove that Turner can run the ball into the end zone. A play action pass would have been a great first down play call. We didn’t learn on the first attempt, so let’s run Turner again. COME ON MAN (Malarkey), points win a game not your stubbornness to continue to run Turner in this way.

After the Abraham interception, there are no excuses for not scoring points. This type of scoring urgency has been the norm all year. We are playing the big boys now, not the losers of the NFL.

Running Turner this way has happened so many times this year and mostly at a first down situation. I said it before, if Mike Smith continues to let Malarkey call plays like he does, then Mike Smith is part of the problem too.

How can anyone with a brain actually think Atlanta did anything but play vanilla offense and defense. We know we have a virtual bye week next week….a glorified practice game. It has been a long time since I have seen a Falcon defense(Grits blitz?)play any better than they did last night. Meanwhile, the offense appeared to be sleep-walking. The “D” needs to lick their wounds, and do exactly what they were doing again on Sunday. The “O”(particularly the line that got pushed around)needs to do some soul searching and man-up for Sunday and the Panthers.

Karl

I was beginning to get worried in the second half when the Falcons offense couldn’t move the ball, kept punting and leaving our defense on the field – they were definitely tired in the fourth quarter for maybe the first time all year. The Saints defense really stepped up – there was no one open for Ryan to throw to. We need to watch film and game a solution for when they come back to the dome in the playoffs. I still think we’re going to the Super Bowl.

The loss could (hopefully) be a blessing in disguise in the long run, because whenever you’re on a long winning streak of any kind there’s the inevitable question of when the other shoe will drop. Just remember what happened to those “perfect” Patriots in the Superbowl a few years ago; they were SUPPOSED to win, but they didn’t. The Atlanta Falcons are blessed that their streak (both wins and wins at the Dome) ended last night as opposed to sometime during the playoffs; there’s time to still address the issues and iron out the things that went wrong before the playoffs. A very good sign is that the entire team KNOWS there were plays not made and things that could have been done better…and they’re not happy about it. I believe it will motivate them to no end in the coming weeks. Having that splash of cold water on their confidence last night may just be the very thing that will help them refocus and come together at exactly the right time.

Here’s hoping it will be enough to bring home a Superbowl championship.

All night long that’s all the TV broadcasters (a/k/a Drew Brees fan club) talked about – according to them he healed the sick, raised the dead taught Mother Teresa everything she knew, and has brought peace, love and harmony to the world. The Falcons are good but they could be great if their coaching staff had a killer instinct. This is what’s been missing all season and why the national media has not taken them seriously as a Super Bowl contender. I had the feeling even when they went up by four that their conservative play calling was going to cost them in the end and it did. Its not about getting the home field throughout the playoffs, they should get that next week against Carolina, but its about having a championship mindset that they can win it all now. The Falcons coaching staff must change this mindset immediately if they are serious about not just going to the big dance, but winning it.

I thought we should have changed up some in the backfield and used Johnson or Weems to get some speed in the game. Turner was getting stuffed and couldn’t get to the corners. A change of pace would have helped.

The blitz would have worked perfectly if our guys could have wrapped up Brees. Too many clean shots and our guys just went flying by without getting him on the ground.

No question about it – the decision to punt on 4th and 6 was absolutely wrong. In either case, if we give up the ball on downs or if we punt, if the Saints make even one first down the Falcons lose. Should have gone for it on 4th down. The wrong decision to punt is inexcusable for a NFL coach.

On the 4th and 6 from the 43 yard line…

First, I would say the odds are equal or better that we have a play designed to get 6 yards and execute this play than the odds of keeping Drew Brees from getting a first down or two. He’d just gotten several in a row on the previous 90 yard drive! With the ball in hand you can control your fate; with the ball in Brees hands, HE controls your fate in this situation.

Second, Even should we miss the 4th down play they get the ball at our 43 needing to accomplish the identical thing–get a first down or two and run out the clock. It wasn’t like the ball was on our 23!

Third, and this is the most disappointing aspect, what did we have to lose? Smith’s comments after the loss is “we still are in the perfect position and the other 15 teams in the NFC would love to be where we are.” Meaning, even with this loss we can accomplish the same goals nest Sunday. Then why not go for it if you have nothing to lose and your still holding the “trump card” in your hand by beating Carolina next week?

You see, I think another opportunity was missed to try to practice and hopefully execute a do or die play that we may face again in the postseason. Somewhere along the way we may face another 4th down play to keep our season alive so why not prepare for one right there–with nothing to lose–to give our team more confidence by having pr oven in this game they can do this. Lastly, what if they had succeeded on the 4th and 6th and went on for a tying field goal or game winning TD.

In my opinion and there’s not a doubt in my mind that, given the identical set of circumstances, Sean Peyton and Bill Belichick would have allowed Brees or Brady to got for it! Coach Smith and or Mike Mularkey will need to sharpen or “man up” at these critical moments or somewhere in the postseason once again we will painfully watch the opposing QB take a knee as we helplessly watch the game clock expire.

It was the wrong call at the moment under the circumstances.

I’d say these are pretty evenly matched teams. look at the points scored by each over the season, points given up by each, record etc. very close. If we play again, could go either way again. one thing for sure it is always exciting.

The best team will be decided in the tournament. Falcons won at NO and Saints won at ATL. If somehow this makes the number one seed inferior to the wild card team I guess you got us on that one. If nothing else us Falcon fans have to admit you are the most obnoxious wild card team in the history of the NFL.

To say one team is better than the other because of the outcome of last nights game is lunacy.

The Falcons made more mistakes than the Saints last night. Smitty with a critical error just like in the playoff game punting with not close to enough time left. He’s got to fix that. The punt call is not defenseable if they were really trying to win.

hey dufus….boy
There’s probably a lot of truth to what you posted earlier. It’s not like Smith & Coaches were trying to lose the game, but I believe the focus was more on getting as many looks at NO’s complex defense as possible while showing as little as possible.
John G
I understand your frustration with the sports media and their love affairs with certain “celebrity” athletes, but Drew Brees IS an awesome QB–in the top 5 league-wide– and we never should have relented with the pressure, despite his ability to react quickly and still make plays under duress. Coach Smith fell back on “the book” instead of relying on instinct and feeling the ebb & flow of the game which had the momentum clearly in NO’s favor. “The Book” clearly says “punt” under such circumstances, but “the book” doesn’t take intangibles such as Brees’ uncanny knack for winning games late with sheer intelligence and will into consideration. Coach Smith SHOULD have and done whatever it took to keep the ball out of Brees’ hands in the game’s waning minutes.
ken
Said pretty much the same thing earlier but I’d like to say “amen” about the seeming lack of “killer instinct” with this staff and team. It shows up in the way we give up leads in the 3rd quarter and go all conservative when nursing a slim lead……

Keys we get second intercept by DE in third QTR and come away with no points, and the fumble by Turner at the one. Saints played great defense. Can they do that again in the playoffs.

I like the Falcons chances to go deep in the playoffs, but this team is still missing a piece on offense and a couple of pieces on defense. Do not think they can make it to Super Bowl and if they do, dont think they can be beat the Patriots….but sure wish they could, tired of Patroit fans at my company. Remember this!!! John Fox and Sean Payton are close friends. Fox knows this is his last game as Panthers coach and don’t be surprised if he goes all out to beat the Falcons. Not only will it help his friend but it’s going to be like the Panthers’ Super Bowl.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Payton doesn’t make a phone call today to Fox encouraging to take it to the Falcons. The Panthers ran over 200 yards against the Falcons last time and the Falcons are coming off an emotional game and a short week.

The Saints showed you must stop Turner. Keeping the Falcons in third and long and put the pressure on Ryan to make a play. The way the Falcons win is with ball control and that’s hard to do when Turner is shut down.

I see the Panthers faking punts, going for it on forth down and assorted trick plays. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a game similar to what the Browns did to the Saints earlier this year.

Why did the Falcons wait until a National telivised game on monday night to implode?
M.Turner..T.McClure..M.Ryan..The Coaching Staff!!
We do NOT have the offensive line to compete with the better defenses in the league..Our lineman were continually being pushed back into our QB & RB’s..I don’t give a tinkers dam who you are, if you can’t protect the QB..the running game stalls and the passing game is non-existant!
Our “dumb-ass” Coaching staff STILL has not figured out a way to make changes at the line of scrimage Or adapt as the game progresses! We still don’t know how to take what the defense gives us!!
Shaun Paton had our system figured to a T…When you get the “mind set” that we are going to run the ball no matter what the cost..you are going to FAIL miserably..as evidenced Monday night!
Look at N/O..run game non-existant..What does Brees and Paton do?? throw the ball over 50 times and win the game!!
The only way to beat N/O was to blitz every down and we failed to do that..hence we lost the game!

For all the criticism of Coach Smith (mine included) he’s still less than 3 full years into a “process” with certain key benchmarks already having been met. The most important as far as this long-suffering(since the very beginning) fan is concerned is something we’re enjoying now: relevance. One of the new ATL regime’s primary stated goals is currently being realized as the team is not only in the thick of the playoff race but is keeping every game in reach and competitive. Even the highly critical Steve Young opined that the Falcons are a year too early and he may be right. That’s a significant accomplishment and a welcome change…..

Stay classy, Saints fans… (where did they come from anyway?)

It was a good game between two of the conference’s best teams that came down to some critical mistakes by the Falcons. McClure’s mishanding of the ball was rough, but the Turner fumble was the killer.

The only thing that worried me about this game was the Falcons’ inability to get anything done on the ground.

If Packers get the 6th seed and win in the 1st round the Birds would be facing the Packers in the 1st round of the playoffs. Believe me they don’t wont the Packers again. Packers would blow them off the field. You beat them the 1st time in ot and that was questionable. Saints will be back to knock off Falcons out of playoffs, Brees is 8-2 over Falcons! If not for one scoring drive that was almost half penaties yards and bad decision flip that ended in a easy TD to save it from being a shut out! Anyone mentioning the bad spot on last drive at end, I agree ball was spotted almost one yard forward, but the next leaping play by Thomas was for almost 3.5 yard gain, so irrelevant. Funny how without the running game, when the game was put on Matt “ice” shoulders, he only completed 15 passes and looked like he was going to cry most of the game! I guess it’s a little harder to win when you actual have to do it with your QB! Next time Saints will clean up mistakes and have Ivory back so it won’t be as close!

A fumble on goaline THAT WAS CAUSED BY SAINTS PUNCHING BALL OUT ON A GOALINE STAND is not the same as missing a kick that was is so automatic that we kicked on FIRST DOWN and the mIss was not the result of any action by Falcons, unlike the heads up play by Charleston to knock it out! Further, the Saints blocked the kick by Falcons to win game, but unfortunately Payotn called an icing TO!

You’re kinda insulting the Falcons because your saying Saints are not good team because of losses early on to bad teams, yet it was this “not good” team that came into your house last night and beat you pretty solidly considering there was only one offensive score that dame on a drive %50 penaty yards! so if you can’t beat a “not good” team at home where you are supposed to be unbeatable, then how bad are you saying Falcons are?

mike mularkey lost this game all by himself. offensive and defensive coordinators are like a general in battle making decisions as the battle changes, not mularkey he’ll keep his game plan he had the night before and arrogantly won’t change a thing even if the conditions change. what a complete idiot. turner should not have fumbled because that play should not have been called. it was just called it didn’t work the saints were ready for it. that’s stupid. as stupid as any decision made by custer or pickett/longstreet. let the saints stop turner! use snelling more, halfback passes, screens, quick slant passes, but no, not mularkey, he’s happy running his head into a wall and then turning around and running his ignorant back into that wall again. no matter how many times it fails, that was his game plan and he was going to stick with it. and his game plan was so simple and plain an 8 year old could have outwitted it! every good general knows that as soon as the battle starts the plans you had the night before will probably go out the window and you will now have to adjust to a new situation. not mularkey if he decides to shoot himself in the foot thousands of people can’t make him change his mind. but this wasn’t even a new situation we all knew, except mularkey that the saints main game plan was to stop turner. but still ol’ mike kept running his head into that brick wall. it goes beyond stupid, a word for his complete and total ignorance hasn’t even been developed yet.

The game meant nothing to the Falcons, it was a simple game plan because there was not reason to show anything. Notice we never ran no huddle? Notice Ryan did take a risk running on 2nd and 6? You really think we would not go for 4th and 6 with our “best” play anything other than bragging rights were riding on it? You get that luxury when you have home field advantage.

It’s refreshing looking on another “blog” and seeing fans express their concerns, appreciations, gripes, Monday(Tuesday)expertise in coaching! I’ve always said fumbles are bad…but the worst is going in for a score, (as evident when Aaron Rodgers fumbled against ya’ll)it kills momentum and drains the team as a whole! Falcon’s this is a divisional game and keep in mind you were a “shanked” FG away from losing in N.O., I still say you are one of the most “rounded teams” in the NFL behind Pittsburgh, B-More. But inexperience and a lack of a 3rd down back (not to mention your D-backs are “suspect” to say the least) will cost you if not in your first game but definitely your 2nd! One of your bloggers said it best a team that can stuff the run then plays a safety over the top of Roddy and can rush (DE or LB) along with playing Gonzales man will beat you. That is the Packers, and Eagles. And on offense they can score @ will! You may be one of a few teams whose window may open (now) and close by next year without “impact” players being drafted. I anticipate seeing you all again soon…..and know the outcome will be much different!

The Falcons are fine. If the offense played that poorly and only lost by 3 to the defending World Champions, we are good. Of course the story would have been different had we not fumbled on the 1 yard line, along with the botched snap that gave the Saints a 28 yard field, but such is the game.
We will win Sunday, have a week off and be ready for round 2 of the playoffs.

You Falcons have a great young team.

I lost my home in Katrinna, my doctors, my children’s schools, our grocery stores, some of my neighbors, etc. There was no electricity back to our neighborhood until 9 months after Katrina. Try erebuilding with no electricity. I got cancer 7 months after Katrina as did many of my neighbors and family. Doctors bloamed it on stress. Try going through surgery and 6 months of chemo with no home to go to.

We had flood insurance and did not need “charity” or help from anyone nor did we expect it. 40% of all oil, natural gas, and refining for the entire country goes through Southeast Louisiana. If we had not come back, the nation ’s economy would have collapsed.

All of this is to say that Roddy White and those who denigrate us for being slow to recover from Katrina can not possibly fathom the extent of pain and loss our entire Gulf Coast region sustained. Our Saints players were eye witnesses to our pain. They shouldn’t have stood on your symbol at mid-field but I’m sure they were angry about what Roddy White and some of the falcons’ fans have written about New Orleans and katrina. What they did was minor compared to what Roddy did and what has been said on these AJC blogs about new Orleans and Katrina.

Our Saints came to New Orleans and didn’t leave at our literally darkest hour. We are grateful to them beyond what words can describe. When months after Katrina, I was standing in the ruins of my home with a bald head and sick from chemo, I could listen to a Saints game on the radio and get bouyed by their success…when no one believed they could ever do it. It gave me strength. Of course my main strength came from my loving God.

Let’s keep our sports rivalry fun and on a higher plane than kicking new Orleans when it was already down from a disaster that has taken us years of intense struggle and pain to recover from.

The Saints dominated this game. If it weren’t for that pick 6, Saints would have won by 10, or more.

Now the falan’ts know why the rest of the NFL media doesn’t show them any respect….

GEAUX SAINTS! OUR TIME!!

SeenThisB4,

That’s the funniest comment I’ve seen all day…”DOMINATED” Are you sure? But only won by 3 points while having one of the premier QB’s in the league? In a game that the sAINT’S needed just a little more than the Falcons… I’m not trying to make excuses just observations, we lost…oh well, we will live to fight another day…. But When a team DOMINATES another, it means losing by at least 21 points, literally having your way with that team the whole game, not getting breaks off of costly fumbles. That pick 6 didn’t make nearly as much difference than the fumble by Turner at the goal line or McClure’s fumble…. There are quite a few of you(sAINT’S) on this board with your chest poking out today, I say enjoy this victory, because wounds heal and those same mistakes will be corrected come the playoffs…..

The real story of last night loss is this. Ofensive cord needs to be fired asap. Play calling has been terriable all season long. Come on guys we have to face our weakiest link and that would be Mike Murlaurkey. Everyone in the NFL know when we line up 2 tight ends and Rodey out wide Turner will be getting the ball. Hey Mike! 2year 2long! You should of been out here 2 years ago. Thanks defense for keeping us in the game. I hate to sound off like this, but I’m tired of blogging what if’s. Falcon Fan for life!

Saints beat the Rams bad enough to the point some people were accusing Saints of running up the score at end, although rams were still trying! So this team will not be easy? They play in a dome and Saints play just as well on road as at home, this the saying that Saints have “dome” field advantage! Not saying we can look past Rams, but we will be double digit favorites going into that game!

I think we were just due for a loss. The Falcons haven’t lost a game in 2 month’s and at home in more than a year. So it was just our time. I have a feeling we will be seeing the Saints again in the playoffs, and when/if we do, I think we will beat them. You’re just not going to beat a team like the Saints 3 times in a row, but you can be them 2 out of 3, which is what I think the Falcons will do if they are able to clinch home-field advantage and get that bye.

The Saints certainly didn’t show me a whole lot last night except for stopping our run. We pretty much kept Brees in check all night. One thing that I have noticed about Matt Ryan and OC Mike Mularky is that most of the time they are pretty good. But when they have a off game, they REALLY have a off game! Ryan just kind of seemed like he was in a funk all night and was unable to snap out of it. And Mularky seems to get kind of stubborn in his play calling when things aren’t working as opposed to going to other options. But this was a good test for the Falcons, and it will allow them to refocus going into the playoffs. Plenty of good teams have gone on to win Super Bowls after losing a divisional game late in the season.

As for the National media respect: who cares! In fact I don’t care if ESPN EVER talks my team up. Trent Dilfer’s opinion on the Falcons good, bad or other isn’t going to get the Falcons one step closer to the Super Bowl.

Also this crap where Roddy White talks trash through Tweeter needs to stop. Trash talking only works if you win while you do it. Let the minor leaguers like T.O. and Ocho Cinco( both of whom for the record have done jack squat) do that stupid ghetto crap. The Falcons are a business team, like the Pats and Colts. So Roddy: lay off the pre-game shenanigans and take care of your business on the field. You’re a great WR, trash talking isn’t your game. So guys need it to be great, but you don’t. So stick to what works for you.

If you shut down Falcons run game and leave game up to Ryan, you will get a win as he crumbles! One offensive TD on a drive 50% penaties!

Our hearts are with you Saints Fan,

Atlanta and New Orleans have one of the longest standing, most bitter rivalries in all Professional Football, if not in all of Sports. Its fun to trash talking and while some of the words ( or even actions) go a bit too far, we (as Falcon) Fans respect the Saints or what we call “Aints” because they are our a fellow Southern Brethen Football city; Unfortunately, several people (so called Falcon or even Saint Fans) do not fully understand this rivalry because so out of towners (transplants) have and continue to pour into our city at huge numbers, this creates somewhat of a disruption in how things are handle down here when it comes to both sports and personal values…We do not like them as Fans only because they are our arch rivals but I will admit that I have personally enjoyed tailgating and visiting their city when we played them. With all that be said, I hope my Falcons bury the Ain’ts in the Playoffs!!!!!!

Well, first off, this is a ATLANTA BLOG!!! What did you expect? So of course there will be some bias for the home team…next Atlanta has hosted two(2) Superbowls (92′ and 2000)…not one (1)… Third, of course N.O. has hosted more Superbowls than us, you have bodies of water, the french quarter, more stuff in walking distance that would not require the use of a car (things that attract more people), and while Atlanta is considered a warm city for the most part, there is a better chance for snow or ice during January and February here than it is in N.O…. It is what it is… I would much rather be in N.O. in the Dome in 2013 watching my team in it rather than hosting it while being part of a has been team who will be watching it next a transvite on bourbon street. The defense played hard and I think were worn down by the end of the game. What’s with calling the 2nd run play on the fumble? To beat the Saints three times this year would be difficult. Would rather lose to them now and save that second win against them in the playoffs.

Please have Roddy and any other players just keep their mouths shut and prove their point by winning. No need firing up the other team with nonsense.

Why on first and goal do they run straight up the middle? How about running, stopping quickly until everyone piles up and falls, then run around everyone?

Can they step back a bit and let Turner get some running momentum when running up the middle? I mean, come on, he looked like he was walking up and hitting a brick wall.

Also, the key here is that the Saints didn’t blow us away. This was a very close, even game that could have gone either way. We match up well with them and hopefully will take care of business in the playoffs.

can”t say that mcclure did it on purpose, but guilt by mossion is definitely there. the o-line looked like every adjective a sportscaster would use to describe self-inflicted failure: lackluster, lethargic, lackadaisical, lazy, disinterested, unmotivated, and just plain no fire in the belly. the o-line played like crap most of the time. they blocked well in pass coverage most of the time but had no interest in blocking for the run. this was not the same o-line i’ve seen in past games, even the losses.

the conservative approach by mike smith also sealed the deal. in pittsburgh this cost us the game and last night it did too. you have to take more risks, calculated risks if you want to win it all. being conservative is good in many cases, but not all the time. it can become a great weakness.

the refs clearly looked like the nfl would prefer to see the saints in the super bowl again and not someone like the falcons. some of those calls, several of them, were just crazy, god awful and weirder than weird. you don’t see calls like that in any other game. that was not offsetting pass interference and that pass to shockey would have been an incomplete in ANY other game, etc.

and stendek was right. this was a very very important game for atlanta. as a long time fan this was a must win for this team and this city. you can’t fly under the radar for ever if you want to get to the top. sooner or later you have to come out of the shadows and stand up and play. this city was asked to rise up and it did! but the team didn’t, at least everyone associated with the offense didn’t. an apology should be issued to all the fans for losing again on monday night football on a national stage. another humiliating loss. another week of espn gloating on their golden boys the saints and disrespecting the falcons. and you know what? the falcons don’t deserve any respect. respect is earned. and earned when it’s the hardest to earn and most important time to earn it. they flopped.

next week should’ve been a rest week, now it’s a must win.
another year where they pick us up and just drop us from a crippling height.
just lose, but don’t look good and fail so miserably at the end of the season again.
this team is nothing more than a cleveland, a cincinnati, a detroit.
this game was important in so many ways, but the offense did care. so much that mcclure didn’t evenpay much attention to snapping the ball well.
now espn can gloat at who the falcons really are. the falcons ought to be ashamed of themselves.

I’m a falcons fan but while everyone is bemoaning this game did’nt mean anything and we have Carolina in our pocket to wrap up the division we still have to play the Panthers and any team can beat any team in the NFL we need to not keep overlooking Carolina exspecially since we’r going to have offensive play calling like we had last night. What all of sudden the Falcons will open up the offense against the Panthers sadly I don’t think they will this will be how we play in the playoffs trying to force Turner up the middle and from there on they will finally be home watching other teams in the playoffs.

I believe we don’t do play action calls is we don’t know how to run them. We had that conservative play calling earlier this year and every game almost except for the Cardinals game we had to play down to the wire with a couple of over time games well they reverted back to that style of play last night and it’s going to get us booted out the playoffs. The Saints played our game plan in thier last drive to take the lead and we followed suit trying to force Turner up the middle……….Why

I’m a die hard Saints fan since Stabler was their QB at the end of his career. I have to say that I’ve never seen so much pressure on Brees since he’s been in NO. I was very impressed with the Falcons pass rush. So the obvious question is — why didn’t they blitz on the last drive? I also would have kept Ryan in the no huddle for a while longer. Also, watching the Saints coach every week, he is known for his game adjustments. If I have Ryan, White, Jenkins, and Tony G. and I see 8 and 9 Saints in the box to stop the run – I would play action to Tony G in the seem all night long. Hopefully the cards will play out and we’ll see an NFC championship between the Saints and Falcons. That would be a great game.

I am disappointed because although I am a life long Saints fan I have always pulled for the Falcons in other games.

Also, to the post who said we got all the breaks!!!! Come on Man!! Falcons had 1 penalty for 10 yards and Saints had a 1000 for 100 yards. I saw bad calls on both sides but the ref’s missed a butt load of calls on the Falcons. Don’t tell me we got all the calls!!!!!!

WHAT DOES GM AND THE FAKE CANT’S HAVE IN COMMON?

ANSWER: BAIL-OUTS

What game were you idiots watching? If any team got bad calls it was the Saints!!! Look at the discrepancies in the number of penalties.

Every time Atlanta screwed-up the refs were there to bail them out. What about the roughing penalty on Ryan. That was the most bogus call of all.

You’re complaining because the Fake Can’ts did not get enough bail out calls by the refs to help them win this game. You already got enough bail out calls to help you win about six games this year. If you weren’t bailed out by poor f-ing ref-ing you wouldn’t even have a winning record must less be in the playoffs.

Did not expected the Falcons to keep running the ball so much. We have good corners but not great,,I really thought Ryan could have alot more success with the passing game if they stuck to it. Play calling was weak..the defense got tired in the middle of the 4th quarter and when you give the ball back to Drew Breese with minutes left in the game ,,it was over then…New Orleans was not going to give it back come helll or high water. They would have go for it on fourth down if it came to it just to get that first down .

I have a feeling that if both teams stay healthy there will be many, many more meaningful games between the Falcons and Saints in the years that follow, including during the month of January.

DOB, a question I have about Coach Smith’s statement:
“We moved the ball down in the no-huddle.
I agree coach! It looked to me like we moved the ball decently out of the semi and no huddle offense. But the offense out of the huddle was off tackle right, off tackle right, pass, punt.

What is the reason for moving the ball better in no huddle vs huddle? Is it the play calling? Is it because Matt is calling the play on the field in no huddle and the OC is calling the plays in the huddle?
What is the running philosophy of the OC? Does he still believe that you can run off tackle right with 9 to 10 men in the box and the safety playing middle linebacker?
Will the OC recognize when a play works *like Roddy’s TD slant route* that its ok to use it again. Its also OK to use that same play on 1st down at the 40.
Does the OC pay attention to the game on the field when the offense is on the sidelines? Did he notice how the Aints moved the ball using screens and even an end around to take advantage of a situationally aggressive defense and compromise them?

I think this team is good enough to win everything. I think this team is doing well in the process. I also think this team is limited by its playbook and selection.
Why do we never run bootleg or PAP on 2nd and 1-3yd goal line situations?

For the playoffs, I want to ask the coach if they intend to evolve the offense or remain idle. Can Harry Douglas run a reverse? Can Matt Ryan bootleg? Do we have the ability to run a true PAP and move the ball? Can Snelling or Douglas and the offensive line setup and execute a bubble screen? Will the WRs get open when their route is shut down or the QB is in trouble?

We are still in a good position at 12-4. Although there were a lot of noisy *second place* Aints fans last night… 12-4 is still a commanding first place in this division. Lets get on point and go win 4 in a row.

The Falcons are a good team. They’ve won some squeakers that could have easily gone the other way. So their record does not really indicate their true strength. As the Saints have shown the Falcon’s offense can be shut down. The Falcon defense has actually kept them in games. At this time of the year it is more about who at or near the top has the momentum going for them. The Falcons are sputtering, the Saints seem to be making a surge. The Falcons could easily be out of the playoffs very quickly especially if the offense plays like it did last night.

Seemed to me the officials were payed to hit the Saints with every flag they could to try to throw the game, but the Saints were just too strong. Someone commented what if trurner had not fumbled, well think – what if the Saints touchdown pass had not been called back (7 more points) what if Brees had not made that sloppy handoff to the falcons (7points less) The game really should have been Saints 24 Falcons-7. The Saints shut down the Falcons running game, and did not allow much on passes they just out played and out smarted the falcons. Falcons are over rated and not worthy of SB status.

Let me clue Mike Smith into a little secret about HIS running game….
a. Turner is not a smash mouth running back
b. The Falcons do not have the “Steelers of old” mammoth OL to run through defenses

Until you recruit players to fit this mold (scheme) then you’d better have an alternate plan when things don’t work out. I know it had to have dawn on you that if you punted this ball back to the Aints with around 4 minutes left on the clock that they would run it out. BVG did a nice job of wearing our defense out to the point of having to resort to the bend but don’t break defense late in the game–which happen to be when Brees put his 90 yard drive together. I know many say that this game was had more meaning for the Aints, but if that’s the mentality this team has then they won’t go far at all.

1. The Gritz Blitz worked well for 3 quarters, but they kinda gave out of gas in the fourth. I hope we never go back to rushing on three DLs (as in previous games), need at least four rushers.

2. I didn’t see a replay of the double foul involving Roddy, I wonder if he really did?

3. What happened to booth review on the ball placement on the Saint’s last drive, it was only off a big yard. We might have stopped them.

4. Mularkey had the chance to stick it to the Saints right after Abraham’s interception, but decided to go milk-toast, when we should have gone vertical.
I think he is trying to force our running game to work, even if it doesn’t.

5. Don’t understand Dimitroff’s “satisfied” with our running backs. When we really need some yardage from Turner, he runs up the backs of the OL.
Is it that the OL can’t make holes for him, or what? Norwood is just keeping a warm spot on the roster. Snelling must still be recovering. If the running game is our “core”, something good better happen soon.

The Aints lost to two teams with losing records the Cardinals and Browns. All our losses has been by playoff teams. How does this make the Aints better?

2. I didn’t see a replay of the double foul involving Roddy, I wonder if he really did?

Even the guys on the radio commented they had never seen nor heard of “offsetting PI penalties”

Another good one was the referee calling a personal foul for the hit on Matt Ryan when he slid. The penalty for the “blow to the head” was called on the next play, was offsetting due to a hold, and Matt wasnt hit on that play at all…
They missed a blatant off sides penalty in the 3rd Q.
And what the heck do you have to do to get a roughing the punter call? The blocker missed the ball and slammed the punter, thats exactly what roughing the punter is. The 5yd penalty is supposed to be for incidental contact such as getting blocked into the guy or rolling into him.

Someone tap Matt on the shoulder and show him on the film….when you run out of bounds, and feel someone grab your shoulder pads, hit the deck. Do you watch the NBA at all?

Falcon fans continue to believe. All is not lost. Case in point, the Aints lost three straight games last year to end the regular season and won it all.The Vikings gave them a win in the NFC championship game and Peyton Manning gave them a gift in the Super Bowl.I would like nothing more than for the Rams or Seahawks to knock the Aints out of the playoffs. Since the Aints lost to to Cardinals and Browns, it could very well hapen.

The Bucs beat the Aints last year to end the regular season. They will repeat that feat again this Sunday. Go Bucs.

Atlanta has lost to 3 playoff team only, NO, Pitt, Philly. Pitt was in OT on the road, NO 3 points, Philly smoked ATL.

NFC is wide open, I think all team are pretty even but who ever come out of west (SeaHawks or Rams).

The team was named for the great jazz song most identified with New Orleans – “When the Saints Go Marching In”, and it was no coincidence that the franchise’s official birth was announced on November 1, which is the Catholic All Saints’ Day. When the deal was reached a week earlier, Dixon strongly suggested to Rozelle that the announcement be delayed until then. Dixon told an interviewer that he even cleared the name with New Orleans’ Archbishop Philip M. Hannan: “He thought it would be a good idea. He had an idea the team was going to need all the help it could get.”

They beat the Saints in N.O., beat Baltimore, beat Green Bay, beat Tampa bay twice, and they lose a close game that could have gone the either way and folks go to bad mouthing them. What’s up with that! I for one, am so impressed with the Falcons defense. They held they Saints and Drew Brees to 10 points for 56 of the first sixty minutes. The Aints is a dynasty.

One with a rich tradition of losing.

I dare the Aint fan acuse us of jumping off the wagon, and question our loyalty to our team.

This accusation is from a franchise that wore bags over their face because they didn’t want to be associated with the Aints. Although, the Aints and Falcons has been playing each other for many years. I do not remember their being a lot of aints fans coming to our Dome. Clearly, they jumped on the wagon when the Aints started winning.Desides that, most of the Aints fans moved to Atlanta to get away from NO . I recieved this imformation first hand from NO refugees.

CMS is too stinking conservative. Offense play calling has no imagination and we were outcoached all night. Fumbles hurt – especially Turners, but come on make some game adjustments when things are not working. Saints made adjustments we did not and the results showed. Punting on 4th day with 2 min makes no sense when we could not stop them. D played hard but need to learn how to tackle. Had Brees cornered several times and let him get loose. Still a good year – but we have some weak areas that need to be addressed. Starting with our offensive game plan!

I’m happy with the way the defense played, but we’re lacking that back that can hit the corners. We need a game changer with speed and hands that can come out of the backfield. Another receiver is also needed. Yes, we have Michael Jenkins but he’s iffy at times. A new defensive coordinator is also needed. We never seem to apply pressure on 3rd and long down, but apply pressure on 1st and 2nd downs. Our secondary will never be tops with this way of thinking.

The play calling after the Falcons’ opening second half drive was quetionable. OK. Turner up the middle once? Good call, but it didn’t work — and didn’t even come close. Then the same play again???? And the Falcons must have done something to tip it off because he whole Saints squad was stacked up in the middle waiting for Turner, and several hit him hard behind the line of scrimmage and he fumbled (uncharacteristically). There had to be a lot of other good plays besides Turner up the middle that they might have tried. And the punt???? Are you kidding me??? Give up your last chance to score a touch down and kick the ball to Drew Brees (and one of the best two- minute drill teams, if not the best, in the NFL) with 2:58 left???? Ryan could not execute a creative pass play to get six yards??? When they kicked it, I changed the channel. It was over with 2:58 left. I knew that — but why didn’t the Falcons??? Later on while channel surfing I caught the victory interview with Brees — I was not surprised in the least. Was anyone else?

Wonder what if Brees had not thrown an interception. I guess there could be alot of what ifs.

Saints sure can talk trash. But you are not playing well enough to blow anyone away and will have to work hard to beat anyone in the playoffs. Who Dat? No one dangerous….Just sayin.

Coach Smith, I like that we applied the pressure on Brees, but why for only 50 minutes? where was the pressure on their last scoring drive?
Yes several plays were left out there and Bierman and Brian Williams must feel horrible after missing Brees on so may occasions.
Coach if we lose by three or by ten points it is still a lost, and in this game you choked big time. The decision to punt with under 4 minutes to go, and then not putting any pressure on Brees to get back the ball was lame. Coach if we go for it and fail the defense will have to try and stop them just like we would need to do if we punted.
I have not lost faith but this conservative nature will not win for us in the playoffs against the very good teams.

MY FELLOW FALCON FANS! WE ARE 12-3! THE LOSS HURTS BUT, DON’T JUMP SHIP! WE WILL END THE YEAR 13-3 WITH THE NUMBER 1 SEED! WE ALL WOULD HAVE TAKEN THAT BACK IN AUGUST! THE STEELERS LOST A CRITICAL AFC HOME GAME TO THE JETS 2 WEEKS AGO. DID THEIR FANS PANIC? SH@#! HAPPENS! WE WILL SEE THEIR ASSES AGAIN! THIS IS THE NFL! I’D RATHER LOSE TO THE DEFENDING CHAMPS, THAN DETROIT, LIKE TAMPA DID LAST WEEK IN TAMPA! WE WILL BE FINE!

13-3, not bad. Rise up.

We played our worse game offensively and still had a chance to pull it out. That is a sign of a good team.

the play should’ve been blown dead before the fumble occurred…forward progress had stopped for a good 3-4 seconds at that point. also, what about the obvious intentional grounding by brees in the end zone (i.e. should’ve been a safety) at the start of the 90-yd drive?

The team didn’t lose the game coach Smith lost it . Smith is a good defensive coach he is not a offensives minded guy ,his play calling is to conservative to win against a high power team .If Smith doesn’t change and let Matty Ice play his game the Falcons will be dome to lose in the playoffs .

Scott, Smith doesn’t call te offensive plays. Mike Malarky does.

I’m disappointed we lost but not totally surprised. I knew it would be hard to shut Brees down. Even with all the blitzing(which I liked) he still throws for over 300 yards. I’m a little disappointed in Ryan though and our receivers. He was bested by Brees. Never looked “into” the game like Brees did. New Orleans loaded the box to stop the run and they succeeded. Too many passing routes that take 4 seconds to develop. Brees just picked us a part with little slants right over the middle. Looked like on replays that Turner missed some big holes to run through on cut-backs but he never cut it back. Just ran straight line.

I can’t believe you all are losting your mind over this lost. It is as simply as one, two, and three. The Falcons gave the game to the Saints. The Saint fans jumping up and down losting their mind for nothing. When we face them again, they are going to be bang up from playing the previous week in the playoffs. Falcons are going to finish them AINTS off. Matt Ryan was just practicing against them, just seeing if him and Harry Douglas were on the same page passing the ball. It was all a setup, but the third game if them SAINTS survive is going to be a beat down. We already gave you a simple of what we going to do come playoff time. Drew Brees is going to throw some interceptions, and maybe a fumble. The Falcons need to take care of business come Sunday at 1:00p.m. and get the title back from them WHOA What Saints. 13-3 Baby GO FALCONS!!!!!

It was a great game to watch but have to put the burden of loss on Coach Smith.

The decision to punt from the 45 not the 38 was stupid and reminded me of when we had Dan Reeves coaching. There was no way in hell the Falcons were going to get the ball back. Take some chances man.

I dont see Smith ever making a onside kick work in the Super Bowl.

If the Falcons do get to the SB it will lost with stupid coaching that was spotlighted in this game.

If Smith is not concerned about the running game thats another joke.
Burner Turner has lost something. His big fat churning legs take one hit and he is flat like a pancake. Even smallish Safties can take Turner down with a leg hit low. Really need a very fast tough runner in the draft.

I doubt Falcons get to the SB

The offensive production of Jenkins, Finneran, HD, Peele, Palmer, Mughelli, and Snelling will have to step up come playoffs.

I hate to rank on the guy, but is there a WR in the NFL who’s had more snaps with less of an impact on a game than HD? I wish it were not so, but our entire “2nd tier” of offensive players are in the same boat now that they have been exposed by the Saints. Limit RW by rolling the safety his way, bracket TG with LBs, clog the front with the inside LBs and you can slow MT. This forces Ryan to have to beat you with the “2nd tier” guys. Jenkins and Snelling are more likely than not to step up but it’s the rest who’ll have to get it done for us or it’s one and done this year.

It’s that simple.

All consider, the offense did not come to play. Matt was average, the o-linemen was below average, and Turner wasn’t himself at all. This was a game where we really could have use Norwood, the saints were just packing the line of scrimmage. If we beat the panthers then the loss will justify itself, personally I think they needed a loss before the playoff just to give them a reality check.

For those who are not aware, the reason that Ryan was backing up on the McClure fumble was simple….as soon as the centers hand moves everything starts…the oline out of there stance to block, the receivers start down the field, and the QB starts his drop back before the ball hits his hands..it is not like playing in your back yard where the fence is out of bounds and right past the rusty blue car on blocks is a touchdown.

Okay it is three days later and I am still ticked about this game. Punting with 3 min left – still can’t get over it. Stupid, Stupid, Stupid. May not have made the first down but at least we would have gone done swinging. Offensive play calling is a problem and they need to make adjustments if we expect to get through the first game. CMS needs to give the players a chance to win and quit being so stinking conservative.

Posing and pissing on the logo and you call the Saints champs. Champions don’t exhibit that type of behavior. We understand that in competition you either come up long or short. Unfortunately we came up short and that is ok. We will not act like savages, degenerates, nor will our team exhibit behavior unbecoming a professional. Now what will happen is when we play ya’ll again, we will make sure his head is put in that piss spot in the middle of the field. Congratulations on your win Monday and your one Superbowl ring. Ya’ll acting like a man getting some snatch for the first time, got one ring and now you want everybody to know it. Get a set of brass knuckles like the Steelers or Cowboys then you can talk.

I love Mike but I don’t get that call. All the 4th and short conversions he’s called for all season and he didn’t at least give it a shot there? Even if we didn’t make it everyone would have understood… Why would you give the ball to Breesus to eat up all out clock when we are down with 3 min left? First the challenge question. A spot cannot be challenged by the D unless it results in a first down. Why didn’t Ryan run more??? Common sense!
