Falcons head coach Mike Smith screams at an official after a first down catch by Roddy White was called back by a penalty, killing a Falcons drive during 1st half action against the Saints. Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com

Falcons coach Mike Smith was gracious in his post-game media session.

He gave the Saints credit for shutting down the offense and explained his fourth quarter decision to give the ball back to the Saints so they could basically run the clock out.

Here’s what he had to say:

OPENING STATEMENT: “I thought it was a very hard fought ballgame tonight. It was two pretty good football teams playing against each other. I liked the preparation throughout the week; we just didn’t get the outcome that we wanted. Defensively, I thought we had a good plan and executed it; we just didn’t make some plays. We left some plays out there. We did some things very uncharacteristic in terms of turnovers in the ballgame. We’ll regroup, we’ll get back together, and we’ll put this one behind us. Again, we still like where we’re at, I can assure you of that. We’ve got to get this one behind us as quick as possible and move on to the Carolina Panthers.”

ON THE OFFENSE’S JAGGED PERFORMANCE: “I’ll credit New Orleans, they did some good things today. We were not very efficient on third down which is something we have been very good at all season. We have not been turning the football over and we had two uncharacteristic turnovers that I think were critical in the game. They did a nice job in defending us. It wasn’t our best effort and a lot of it has to do with the way that we played. “

ON THE DECISION TO PUNT: “Definitely thought it was the right thing to do. It was fourth down and six with the ball out their 38, 39-yard line maybe even a little bit further out. But on fourth and six we felt like the way that we’d been playing defensively and we had two timeouts and we hopefully could wrap one around the two-minute warning. Unfortunately, we didn’t get it done there at the end.”

ON WHETHER THE DEFENSE GOT TIRED: “I don’t believe so. We didn’t execute very well on that one drive. The other score was a short field after a turnover and I thought we kept our rotation like we wanted to. They made the plays. It’s the typical game when these two teams meet, since I’ve been here, there’s only been one game that hasn’t been at eight points or less. Most of them are at two or three or four point games.”

ON THE NO-HUDDLE: “We moved the ball down in the no-huddle. Again, we felt like it was in our best interest to get back in and huddle. What they were doing in the no-huddle was the same thing they were doing defending us when we were huddling. We felt that it was the right thing to do at that point in time at the game.”

ON THE PRESSURE ON BREES: “I think we had a very good plan in terms of getting pressure on the quarterback. I think we left a number of plays out there in terms of getting QB Drew (Brees) on the ground. He did a good job extending plays. It was a well-designed game plan and I thought the guys went out and executed it. We just did not always finish the plays. You can see why Drew Brees is a Pro Bowl player in terms of being able to extend plays. He was able to do that tonight.”

ON REGROUPING: “We’ll put this one behind us as quick as possible. The outcome we didn’t get tonight, but we still like where we’re at I can assure you that. I think there’s probably 15 teams that would want to trade with us so I like where we’re at. We didn’t get the outcome. I’m disappointed but not discouraged because there was some really good football played out there tonight by both football teams.”

ON RYAN’S PLAY: “Until I watch the tape I’m not going to make an evaluation. I know we weren’t as efficient on third down like we have been. We’ve been a very good third down football team. We didn’t run the ball statistically. Again, until I watch the tape I’m not going to make any statements about how our guys played. I know they played hard tonight and it was a hard fought football game. That’s two good football teams going at it, slugging it out and they were the better team tonight. My hat’s off to Head Coach Sean (Payton) and his staff.”

ON WHETHER HE’S CONCERNED ABOUT THE RUN GAME: “No, not at all. We didn’t get the yards that we would have liked to tonight. It wasn’t as efficient, but this is a football team that at the core of what we do is running the football. We will always be a team that’s going to run it. We just didn’t do it very well tonight. Again, you have to talk about the whole body of work. We’re talking about one night, but this is a good football team. There’s a bunch of guys in there that are disappointed but not discouraged. We’ll put this behind us and move on.”

A fumble on goaline THAT WAS CAUSED BY SAINTS PUNCHING BALL OUT ON A GOALINE STAND is not the same as missing a kick that was is so automatic that we kicked on FIRST DOWN and the mIss was not the result of any action by Falcons, unlike the heads up play by Charleston to knock it out! Further, the Saints blocked the kick by Falcons to win game, but unfortunately Payotn called an icing TO!

But if not for the push off against White against Ravens and the bad call on the int against Bucs Birds would be out of the division race and playing for a wildcard. Apparently Payton reminded the refs about White pushing off last night and he got caught early in the game. If he can’t push off, he can’t get open.

You’re kinda insulting the Falcons because your saying Saints are not good team because of losses early on to bad teams, yet it was this “not good” team that came into your house last night and beat you pretty solidly considering there was only one offensive score that dame on a drive %50 penaty yards! so if you can’t beat a “not good” team at home where you are supposed to be unbeatable, then how bad are you saying Falcons are?

mike mularkey lost this game all by himself. offensive and defensive coordinators are like a general in battle making decisions as the battle changes, not mularkey he’ll keep his game plan he had the night before and arrogantly won’t change a thing even if the conditions change. what a complete idiot. turner should not have fumbled because that play should not have been called. it was just called it didn’t work the saints were ready for it. that’s stupid. as stupid as any decision made by custer or pickett/longstreet. let the saints stop turner! use snelling more, halfback passes, screens, quick slant passes, but no, not mularkey, he’s happy running his head into a wall and then turning around and running his ignorant back into that wall again. no matter how many times it fails, that was his game plan and he was going to stick with it. and his game plan was so simple and plain an 8 year old could have outwitted it! every good general knows that as soon as the battle starts the plans you had the night before will probably go out the window and you will now have to adjust to a new situation. not mularkey if he decides to shoot himself in the foot thousands of people can’t make him change his mind. but this wasn’t even a new situation we all knew, except mularkey that the saints main game plan was to stop turner. but still ol’ mike kept running his head into that brick wall. it goes beyond stupid, a word for his complete and total ignorance hasn’t even been developed yet.

The game meant nothing to the Falcons, it was a simple game plan because there was not reason to show anything. Notice we never ran no huddle? Notice Ryan did take a risk running on 2nd and 6? You really think we would not go for 4th and 6 with our “best” play anything other than bragging rights were riding on it? You get that luxury when you have home field advantage.

It’s refreshing looking on another “blog” and seeing fans express their concerns, appreciations, gripes, Monday(Tuesday)expertise in coaching! I’ve always said fumbles are bad…but the worst is going in for a score, (as evident when Aaron Rodgers fumbled against ya’ll)it kills momentum and drains the team as a whole! Falcon’s this is a divisional game and keep in mind you were a “shanked” FG away from losing in N.O., I still say you are one of the most “rounded teams” in the NFL behind Pittsburgh, B-More. But inexperience and a lack of a 3rd down back (not to mention your D-backs are “suspect” to say the least) will cost you if not in your first game but definitely your 2nd! One of your bloggers said it best a team that can stuff the run then plays a safety over the top of Roddy and can rush (DE or LB) along with playing Gonzales man will beat you. That is the Packers, and Eagles. And on offense they can score @ will! You may be one of a few teams whose window may open (now) and close by next year without “impact” players being drafted. I anticipate seeing you all again soon…..and know the outcome will be much different!

The Falcons are fine. If the offense played that poorly and only lost by 3 to the defending World Champions, we are good. Of course the story would have been different had we not fumbled on the 1 yard line, along with the botched snap that gave the Saints a 28 yard field, but such is the game.
We will win Sunday, have a week off and be ready for round 2 of the playoffs.

You Falcons have a great young team.

I lost my home in Katrinna, my doctors, my children’s schools, our grocery stores, some of my neighbors, etc. There was no electricity back to our neighborhood until 9 months after Katrina. Try erebuilding with no electricity. I got cancer 7 months after Katrina as did many of my neighbors and family. Doctors bloamed it on stress. Try going through surgery and 6 months of chemo with no home to go to.

We had flood insurance and did not need “charity” or help from anyone nor did we expect it. 40% of all oil, natural gas, and refining for the entire country goes through Southeast Louisiana. If we had not come back, the nation ’s economy would have collapsed.

All of this is to say that Roddy White and those who denigrate us for being slow to recover from Katrina can not possibly fathom the extent of pain and loss our entire Gulf Coast region sustained. Our Saints players were eye witnesses to our pain. They shouldn’t have stood on your symbol at mid-field but I’m sure they were angry about what Roddy White and some of the falcons’ fans have written about New Orleans and katrina. What they did was minor compared to what Roddy did and what has been said on these AJC blogs about new Orleans and Katrina.

Our Saints came to New Orleans and didn’t leave at our literally darkest hour. We are grateful to them beyond what words can describe. When months after Katrina, I was standing in the ruins of my home with a bald head and sick from chemo, I could listen to a Saints game on the radio and get bouyed by their success…when no one believed they could ever do it. It gave me strength. Of course my main strength came from my loving God.

Let’s keep our sports rivalry fun and on a higher plane than kicking new Orleans when it was already down from a disaster that has taken us years of intense struggle and pain to recover from.

The Saints dominated this game. If it weren’t for that pick 6, Saints would have won by 10, or more.

Now the falan’ts know why the rest of the NFL media doesn’t show them any respect….

GEAUX SAINTS! OUR TIME!!

SeenThisB4,

That’s the funniest comment I’ve seen all day…”DOMINATED” Are you sure? But only won by 3 points while having one of the premier QB’s in the league? In a game that the sAINT’S needed just a little more than the Falcons… I’m not trying to make excuses just observations, we lost…oh well, we will live to fight another day…. But When a team DOMINATES another, it means losing by at least 21 points, literally having your way with that team the whole game, not getting breaks off of costly fumbles. That pick 6 didn’t make nearly as much difference than the fumble by Turner at the goal line or McClure’s fumble…. There are quite a few of you(sAINT’S) on this board with your chest poking out today, I say enjoy this victory, because wounds heal and those same mistakes will be corrected come the playoffs…..

The real story of last night loss is this. Ofensive cord needs to be fired asap. Play calling has been terriable all season long. Come on guys we have to face our weakiest link and that would be Mike Murlaurkey. Everyone in the NFL know when we line up 2 tight ends and Rodey out wide Turner will be getting the ball. Hey Mike! 2year 2long! You should of been out here 2 years ago. Thanks defense for keeping us in the game. I hate to sound off like this, but I’m tired of blogging what if’s. Falcon Fan for life!

Saints beat the Rams bad enough to the point some people were accusing Saints of running up the score at end, although rams were still trying! So this team will not be easy? They play in a dome and Saints play just as well on road as at home, this the saying that Saints have “dome” field advantage! Not saying we can look past Rams, but we will be double digit favorites going into that game!

I think we were just due for a loss. The Falcons haven’t lost a game in 2 month’s and at home in more than a year. So it was just our time. I have a feeling we will be seeing the Saints again in the playoffs, and when/if we do, I think we will beat them. You’re just not going to beat a team like the Saints 3 times in a row, but you can be them 2 out of 3, which is what I think the Falcons will do if they are able to clinch home-field advantage and get that bye.

The Saints certainly didn’t show me a whole lot last night except for stopping our run. We pretty much kept Brees in check all night. One thing that I have noticed about Matt Ryan and OC Mike Mularky is that most of the time they are pretty good. But when they have a off game, they REALLY have a off game! Ryan just kind of seemed like he was in a funk all night and was unable to snap out of it. And Mularky seems to get kind of stubborn in his play calling when things aren’t working as opposed to going to other options. But this was a good test for the Falcons, and it will allow them to refocus going into the playoffs. Plenty of good teams have gone on to win Super Bowls after losing a divisional game late in the season.

As for the National media respect: who cares! In fact I don’t care if ESPN EVER talks my team up. Trent Dilfer’s opinion on the Falcons good, bad or other isn’t going to get the Falcons one step closer to the Super Bowl.

Also this crap where Roddy White talks trash through Tweeter needs to stop. Trash talking only works if you win while you do it. Let the minor leaguers like T.O. and Ocho Cinco( both of whom for the record have done jack squat) do that stupid ghetto crap. The Falcons are a business team, like the Pats and Colts. So Roddy: lay off the pre-game shenanigans and take care of your business on the field. You’re a great WR, trash talking isn’t your game. So guys need it to be great, but you don’t. So stick to what works for you.

If you shut down Falcons run game and leave game up to Ryan, you will get a win as he crumbles! One offensive TD on a drive 50% penaties!

Our hearts are with you Saints Fan,

Atlanta and New Orleans have one of the longest standing, most bitter rivalries in all Professional Football, if not in all of Sports. Its fun to trash talking and while some of the words ( or even actions) go a bit too far, we (as Falcon) Fans respect the Saints or what we call “Aints” because they are our a fellow Southern Brethen Football city; Unfortunately, several people (so called Falcon or even Saint Fans) do not fully understand this rivalry because so out of towners (transplants) have and continue to pour into our city at huge numbers, this creates somewhat of a disruption in how things are handle down here when it comes to both sports and personal values…We do not like them as Fans only because they are our arch rivals but I will admit that I have personally enjoyed tailgating and visiting their city when we played them. With all that be said, I hope my Falcons bury the Ain’ts in the Playoffs!!!!!!

Well, first off, this is a ATLANTA BLOG!!! What did you expect? So of course there will be some bias for the home team…next Atlanta has hosted two(2) Superbowls (92′ and 2000)…not one (1)… Third, of course N.O. has hosted more Superbowls than us, you have bodies of water, the french quarter, more stuff in walking distance that would not require the use of a car (things that attract more people), and while Atlanta is considered a warm city for the most part, there is a better chance for snow or ice during January and February here than it is in N.O…. It is what it is… I would much rather be in N.O. in the Dome in 2013 watching my team in it rather than hosting it while being part of a has been team who will be watching it next a transvite on bourbon street. LOL!!! It very well, see the thing to remember is that the sAINT’S have only p*ssed off a tough team and their fans after yesterday’s loss, it’s not necessary how hard you fall but how you get up… the mistakes made yesterday by the Falcons will only make us stronger… just pray that your sAINT’S WILL NOT get past the first round because the second round will be an ongoing nightmare for them!!!! So in the words of Samuel L. Jackson “RISE UP”!!!!!

To all you fair weather falcon fans KICK ROCKS!!! We are still 12-3 and in a great position. Although those were the saints and I’d love nothing more than for us to beat them, the fact is that this was just ONE GAME! We had two turnovers that were unlike us and I’m sure we’ll get that corrected. Let’s just handle business on sunday. We just may see those same saints here again and we’ll be ready. But what kills me is that some people talk about the saints as though they are light years better than we are. The fact is we beat them by 3 and they beat us by 3. They won a lot of close games last year and we won a lot of close games this year. Whatever!
