Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White (84) tries to get around the tackle of Baltimore Ravens cornerback Josh Wilson (37) in the first half of their game at the Georgia Dome. Jason Getz jgetz@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons defensive end John Abraham (groin), wide receiver Roddy White (knee), running back Antone Smith (hamstring) and safety Shann Schillinger (concussion) did not practice on Wednesday.
Coach Mike Smith said Abraham and White were given “maintenance” days and both are expected to return to practice on Thursday. Abraham, who leads the team in sacks with eight, did not play last week against the Rams.
“We are probably going to continue to rest some of these guys as we go through the rest of the season,” Smith said. “Some of the older guys, we’ll start trying to take some snaps off of them as we (move) into the last quarter of the season.”
Schillinger, a key special teams player, suffered a concussion against the Rams and is in the league’s concussion protocol.
Middle linebacker Curtis Lofton (knee), defensive tackle Corey Peters (ribs) and wide receiver/returner Eric Weems (pectoral muscle) were limited in practice.

JA is always hurt. Too old. Hope this is the last season with him. Seems every Def player we draft or acquire gets hurt.

I hope we can find some top tier DE talent next year either in draft or free agency – aside from Abe, no one else at DE has gotten it done this season sack-wise, and Abe is not getting any younger.

Since someone mentioned draft, a discussion about a first round pick with a friend came up. With a pick in the potential 30’s, Hankerson from the U came up as an intriguing option. He is big and has tremendous upside. With TD’s ability to find solid line play in the mid to late rounds, look for a skill player or tall CB to be the first choice for the front office.

Rest him, please. He doesn’t need to practice. We bad need another pass rushing threat. Sid looks like a richmond spider, and Bierman shows flashes but needs JA on the other side to take the pressure off of him.

I hope this is not serious, Abraham had a lot of trouble with his groin on his former team. Is it too early to call Peria Jerry a bust, 4 solo tackles 1 assisted sack, WTF. We are just not getting value out the guys we are drafting to play D-line. I will never understand why we didn’t go after Julius Peppers,oh well we have to make do with what we have. If we don’t win it all this season this issue must be addressed & not in the draft.

Looks like there’s another cheese head (Bleed Green) on here that’s been smoking too much cheese. My little niece can outrush any running back the Packers got. I don’t think you can win only through the air. The Falcons are just too balanced on offense and defense for that to happen. Keep smoking that cheese!

folks, if we protect Ryan like we have in last three games, GB doesnt have a chance. Matty Ice beat these bums on the road in 08, and we have a more balanced offense to counter their D. The packers o-line is a little suspect, and can be beaten. this game will def be won in the trenches, and i see Atl winning on a last minute FG. 31-30 Falcons!

The Packs defense gets a lot of pub, but compare the yardage.
Packers……………323.4 (12th)
Falcons……………339.5 (17th)
16 yards a game is not much.
Falcons offense averages 24 more that the Pack per game. Very close. IF averages held true, the Falcons gain 8 more yards than the Pack.
Close game? Special teams be the difference?
So what’s all this SMACK from cheeseheads?

Ok, to be fair to Wes, Abraham had 5.5 sacks last year after having 16.5 the previous year, so a case can be made that he was less productive…but we always know that there’s a chance something special could happen when JA is playing and he did have a lot of pressures…oh what the heck, Wes, you’re an IDIOT!

Yeah, Ryan has no arm strength, just keep your DB’s within 20 yards of the line and you will be just fine! This is a very good match up between two evenly matched teams. Looking at that, you have to know that the home field, with or without the traveling Pack, will make a difference. That and the BALANCED offensive attack will give the Falcons the edge. I expect to see the green team win this weekend, but that will be Buford in the State playoffs.

Some of you are either johnny come lately falcon fans or have short memories. Abe had serious groin problems here during his first couple seasons with the Faclons. It has only been in the last 3 seasons or so that he had seemingly overcome the problem. But now it has come up once again and when it does it just simply doesn’t go away. Trust me this is going to be an issue for the rest of the season and we were already having probelms getting pressure on the QB. Van Gorder better start drawing up some blitz packages using guys like Spoon if we are to get pressure.

EXPERTS SPLIT:
Source Winner Notes
ESPN Consensus Falcons Seven of the 10 ESPN experts like the Falcons at home against the Packers. Only Chris Mortensen, Mark Schlereth and the Accuscore computer think otherwise.
Yahoo Sports Consensus Split The votes are split among the Yahoo experts with Les Carpenter and Jason Cole in the Falcons corner and Michael Silver and the Yahoo Users betting on the Packers.
CBS Sports Consensus Falcons Four of five experts at CBS think the Falcons will stay undefeated at home but Dave Richard vehemently disagrees. There’s no way to know if he was vehement but it’s a good word and I like to use it when I can.
Fanhouse Packers Dave Goldberg: Everyone ignores the Falcons, one of three 8-2 teams in the NFL. They win by average scores, they win at home and they … Well, they just don’t seem like a power. But they’re pretty good. So are the Packers, who already have shut out the Jets in the Meadowlands. The same Packers who are getting healthier. The same Packers who … you get the idea. Packers 17, Falcons 13.
What If Sports Packers Projection says the Falcons lose, 22-21.
Sports Illustrated Packers Peter King: Game of the Week, by far. Great battle between two of the game’s top 10 quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers 260 yards per game, Matt Ryan 250. Rodgers .641 completion rate, Ryan .631. The difference here? The Green Bay corners. Tramon Williams and Charles Woodson will give Ryan his toughest day of the year so far. Packers 23, Falcons 16.
USA Today Split Another split decision with four experts leaning Atlanta and four on Green Bay’s side.
Sporting News Split Russ Lande hasn’t made his pick yet, but with six votes cast, it’s another split with three for the Falcons and three for the Packers of Green Bay.
SBN Chicago Falcons The random number generator loves the Falcons, 34-9.
Battle Red Blog Packers TexansDC: I’m still not sold in Atlanta as elite. That would change if they could slow down the Packers. Behind Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews, the Packers have shown they can beat elite teams in a shoot-out or defensive struggle. They’ll do it on the road against a playoff team. Packers win 24-20.
SBN ATL Falcons Josh Massey: In each of the past two weeks, a loss to the Packers has resulted in a coach’s firing (Wade Phillips with Dallas, Brad Childress with Minnesota). Even if the Falcons fall on Sunday, I’m thinking Mike Smith won’t be updating his resume anytime soon. This game is scary for Atlanta because success relies on the DBs – and we’re going to learn a whole lot about Dunta Robinson on Sunday. And though my fingers are itchy to type “PICK: Green Bay,” something tells me domefield advantage is going to be enough. (Barely.) PICK: Atlanta

Allow me to help you understand.. Woulda, shoulda, coulda, doesn’t apply here. Pepper’s made it clear that there was only one place he wanted to play, and turned down larger offer’s because he wanted to play with Urlacher. Briggs and the rest of Chicago’s D. But your’re right, Peppers being apart of the Bears D has ALOT to do with their winning record this season. The guy has excelled even more than the experts thought he would. Matter fact, they’re saying he has never played better. Mind you, sack counts are only a small part of what this Bad*** man does on the field each week.

Ryan 18-1 SU at home as a starter-and he’s now playing better than at any previous time…the Packers are thin at safety so Roddy and Jenkins could have a field day on long pass plays. Finally, our defense is much stronger at home than away, and for the first time perhaps all season we have all our defensive starters rested and ready to play. We also have a very good coaching staff that will have a solid gameplan ready…Relax everyone-the NFL’s best team will win this Sunday at home. The Packers will have to settle for NFC Central champs not NFC champs-sorry crack(I meant cheese) heads…
