Falcons coach Mike Smith has asked for some help from the fans to beat the Packers. (Curtis Compton/ Ccompton@ajc.com)
FLOWERY BRANCH – Tell your preacher to let you out of Sunday service early.
Take the MARTA if traffic is your issue.
Cut the tailgate off a little bit earlier.
Basically, as Kim Zolciak sings, “Don’t be Tardy for the Party!”
Falcons coach Mike Smith, who is 18-3 in the Georgia Dome in three seasons, is asking the fans to be on time and loud for Sunday’s 1 p.m. game against the Green Bay Packers.
“I just want to talk a little bit about the upcoming game and how important it is for our fans to get out there,” Smith said. “We want it to be like Thursday night (against the Baltimore Ravens). That was a big advantage for us as a football team to have the fans in the stands, rocking and rolling.”
The Falcons are 8-2 and have the best record in the NFC. Green Bay is 7-3.
“It should be a good game,” Smith said. “The Green Bay Packers are on a roll. They are playing good football. It ought to be an exciting afternoon. We are hoping that everyone will come and help us win the game.”

Fans in Atlanta please be there and be LOUD. If we can win this one, the team is all but assured a spot in the playoffs. A loss would also seriously hurt the case for home field advantage and a bye as we would have a loss to both GB and Philly. Be grateful you can cheer on the Birds in person and show your support. I live in Houston and the damn game isn’t even on TV, can you believe that crap. The NFC game this week is instead Philly and Chicago.

This should be a black out game.. We need to pull out the all black uniforms. If we beat the Packers and split with T.B. and N.O., we should get home field. I do not see Carolina or Seattle beating us. 13-3 will get us home field. Please Falcon fans, pay no attention to those bogus power rankings. The national media outlets are praying for our downfall. They are waiting for us to slip so they can say “I told you so. They are not that good!” Keep this streak going.

Falcons keys to winning (as usual) vs the Pack:
#1 – Running game – Turner needs to get going. We expect the passing game will show up – that’s a given. If Turner breaks 100 yds, we win.
#2 – Defense bending but not breaking.
#3 – Special teams continue to improve on last week’s showing. We can’t afford to get beat (badly) in the field position.
#4 – No turnovers. Been playing very smart and basically mistake-free football. If we do 3 of these 4 keys, we win!!
If we do only 2 of these 4….we could get beat.
GO FALCONS!!

The Falcons are not getting the respect they should have in the NFL. On the NFL website first page and on TV, everyone is talking about Tom Brady, Sanchez, Manning boys, and the –(Dam Vikings every day). The Falcons have the best record in the entire league and are not well recognized. What is going on? There is no perfect team this year. It is “not” the Steelers you Steeler fans so chill out. Every team has its holes on both sides of the field. If any team should be in the News all the time should’nt it be the Falcons. Whenever a team usually wins a lot the news commentators focus on that team. So tell me whats up now man?????? Go to the NFL’s website, and look under the Standings by the league leading stats and check out the Falcons………..OKAY???????? *********** NEW FLASH****************
THE ATLANTA FALCONS ARE THE BEST TEAM IN THE NFL RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!

From the Green Bay Press Gazette:
It appears the Packers will be without the services of safeties Atari Bigby and Anthony Smith for their game against the Atlanta Falcons this week.
Bigby suffered a hamstring injury and Smith an ankle sprain against the Minnesota Vikings. Packers coach Mike McCarthy said at his press conference today that it will be a challenge for either player to see action this week because of those injuries.
The Packers are down to three healthy safeties on their roster: starters Nick Collins and Charlie Peprah, and backup Jarrett Bush, who doubles as a cornerback. It’s possible the Packers might bring up safety Anthony Levine from the practice squad this week.
The other injury McCarthy mentioned was an arch sprain by center Scott Wells. He said the team is monitoring that injury. He also noted that Wells is having his most consistent season.
In other highlights from McCarthy’s presser:
*He spoke highly of his staff. Although he doesn’t want to lose anyone, McCarthy said there are a number of assistants on his staff, including Dom Capers, worthy of being an NFL head coach.
*He likes what rookie running back Dimitri Nance showed against the Vikings. He said Brandon Jackson and Dimitri Nance make a good 1-2 punch.
*Ryan Pickett and Donald Driver both came through the Vikings game fine physically.
*Nothing out of the norm is being done to get Greg Jennings the ball in recent weeks. They are moving him around, remain cognizant of defensive matchups and are staying with their base concepts.
*Having so many Packers fans at the Metrodome was awesome, McCarthy said. He said his team was having a lot of fun on the sidelines in the fourth quarter.
*Since an 18-penalty performance against the Bears, which McCarthy said contributed to the 20-17 loss, there has been emphasis on not committing penalties. The players have responded, he said.
*Regarding Brad Childress’ firing by the Vikings, McCarthy said you never want to see that and feel for his family. He acknowledged it’s a bottom line business and part of the job description. It’s a tough business from a lot of different angles.
*Aaron Rodgers is playing at a high level the last three or four weeks. He did a good job in post-snap reads and adjustments.
*He’s very happy with the job the defense is doing, especially keeping opponents out of the end zone. The team spent a lot of time in the off-season on red-zone defense, with Dom Capers and his staff adjusting some things conceptually and coverage-wise. In yesterday’s game against the Vikings, the Packers defense performed at its highest efficiency of the season, McCarthy said. In the first Vikings game, in which the Packers won 28-24, the defense performed at its lowest efficiency.
*The Packers have moved to plus-8 in turnover differential. McCarthy stressed again that he wants to see that number rise to plus-10 or better. On offense the Packers are taking care of the football, as evidenced by no giveaways in the past three games.

This is a statement game. If we win and beat the media favorite Falcons then we will finally be noticed. If we lose then we will hear from the national media (and a couple of media people here, guess who) that we have to many holes to make it the big time this year. Bottomline, if you want to make it to the NFC championship game, this is a great way to start, beat the Pack.

How would that be a joke? And I think I have figured it out. Atlanta has jobs, great weather, beautiful women, mountains, ocean, etc. We have a great quality of life and are generally happy people. Which northerners and midwesterners equate to us being terrible sports fans. If it’s a beautiful 70 degree Sunday afternoon in November and and the Falcons lose, it’s cool. I’ll just do some work outside and hang with my family.
I would rather be a “bad” sports fan and a happy person, than someone who is a “good” sports fan and just a miserable ass. And your post backs it up.

This is a statement game for the Birds. As for all the Packer fans saying that we have only beaten sub par teams. Look at the Packers and Vikings. The only reason that game was a gimmee was the Vikings quit on the coach . Everyone can say that we are lucky and not good. That’s fine with us because we are 8-2 and for once , we have a chance to be happy. Just because the media doesn’t love us and every week we have the opponents fans on here doggin us out and on Monday they are gone like the wind, who cares. If you are a true Falcons fan and are going to the game like I am, then RISE UP and show everyone that we deserve to be here. Only one person , John Clayton picked the Birds to win the NFC South, the true division , not the NFC East or NFC North. I’m not predicting a blow out , but it’s gonna be one helluva game. Beware Packer fans , we are not the Vikings….GO BIRDS ,,,RISE UP.

I think what Coach Smith is talking about is that he wants all Falcon fans in their seats before kickoff to get the place rocking early. As a season ticket holder, I am bewildered as to why the stadium is only half full at kickoff. A lot of fans start to trickle in after kickoff. He wants everyone there early to pump up the volume. Leave the tailgate early this time.

Ok, I have been dead on with every pick this year. I new we would lose to PIT and PHI, although I must say that I didnt think PHI would kick our butts that bad. We have to be balanced on offense. Give Turner the rock 30 times and let Matty air it out a lil bit. We have to get on them early, which we don’t do often. Our corners have to play well. Jennings is lights out and its time to see if Robinson is worth the money. I’m sure he will be doubled all game. They do a lot of run formations that they pass from. It really confuses the D. If we can get past them then we have a amazing shot to go deep into the playoffs. Here’s the pick…go ahead and place your bets, its guaranteed. 34-31 Falcons. I almost don’t want to pick the Falcons cause I know im gonna get one wrong sooner than later.

Unitas was the greatest ever but that might be stretching it just a tad. Nevertheless, we will beat Green Bay Sunday.

I always get there early Coach Smith. Many of the fans have to get liquored up before they come into the Dome because they refuse to pay $7 per beer once they get inside.
I’m nearly always PO’ed at the number of enemy fans at Falcon’s home games. I don’t understand why Falcon’s fans aren’t buying these tickets instead of leaving them available for our opponents. Bears and Saints fans are the worst, however I was surprised how many loud mouthed Ravens fans were there 2 weeks ago. Much like the Chicago fans from the 08 season, the Raven’s fans started their victory celebration a little bit too early. Matty Ice, Mike Jenkins and Roddy White still had something to show Ray Lewis and friends. Amazing how quiet all those obnoxious Yankees got after the Falcons stepped on their face at the end.
All I can say is…..Falcon’s fans, you don’t know what you are missing. This Atlanta team is worthy of your support. It’s time for you to RISE UP!

I was there for the Thursday night Baltimore game, and I have to say that was the most intense atmosphere I have been in for a sporting event. It was crazy. The trash talking, in good nature, with the Baltimore fans in the stands and on Marta. Folks were into it on the train, in the parking lot, in the dome.
We do have a tendency to be a bit reserved, so get an attitude before the game and be that 12th man bird fans.
We can’t afford any hiccups early on D, and we don’t need to go 3 and out on the first possession. No early momentum to the Packers.

I don’t blame it on people being in church. I think not being able to drink beer in the bar until 12:30 is the problem. People have to take that last 30 minuntes before kickoff to get a few beers in them befroe they have to pay $7 a beer at the game. They should lower the beer price to $5 for the first quarter and I guarantee that everyone will be in the stadium on time.

Back during the late seventies (Bartkowski days) Andrews, Cain, Jenkins, the fans back then were in the old stadium “ROCKIN MAN”. Here in Dallas, Tx – it’s unbeleivable how “Falcons Fans” here in the Dallas area. ComOn-Man ya’ll get there early like Smitty is asking. Rest assured Rodgers and the Packers are a very good team!
Odds on over / under calls for 47 – my bet is “way over” – the Packers are good – Our DB’s and defense better come ready to play for long ball offensive game – if we shut down Rodgers then the”under” is the way to bet – the real key is “can our offense dominate the way we have in past weeks”, against that tenacious Packer defense??

The short history lesson for this week:
The Green Bay Packers are an American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL) and are the third-oldest franchise in the NFL.
The Packers are the last vestige of “small town teams” that were once common in the NFL during the 1920s and 1930s. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau (hence the name Lambeau Field on which the team plays) and George Whitney Calhoun, the Green Bay Packers can trace their lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896. In 1919 and 1920 the Packers competed as a semi-professional football team against clubs from around Wisconsin and the Midwest. They joined the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in 1921, the forerunner to what is known today as the National Football League (NFL). The Packers are the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States.

Packers……………323.4 (12th)
Falcons……………339.5 (17th)
16 yards a game is not much.
Falcons offense averages 24 more that the Pack per game. Very close. IF averages held true, the Falcons gain 8 more yards than the Pack.

I have to say that I have been surprised by the Falcons winning this season, but I think this will be an L. Green Bay has probably the best group of wide receivers that you will ever see. They are fast, strong, and very aggressive so they snatch the ball out of the air, rather than allow teams to pick them off. A Saints win this Thursday and a Falcons loss on Sunday will make for a great matchup December 27th.

@1:46. It doesn’t matter how many HOF’s the Packers have. I don’t think any of them will be playing Sunday. Also, all those “championships” you guys won against Duluth (or somebody) before the Atanta was in the league don’t impress me much. Those were more Wisconsin championships than real NFL championships.

The Packers, for what it’s worth, look like the best team in the league to me after 10 games for a couple of reasons. The defense has gotten early instability settled; coordinator Dom Capers has figured out the right personnel combinations, and the corner combo or Tramon Williams and Charles Woodson — who has turned into the kind of leader a head coach dreams of — is playing as well as any corner tandem in the league. Green Bay’s allowed 10 points in the past 12 quarters. The Packers shut out the Jets at the Meadowlands. In the past two weeks, they didn’t let two bad teams breathe.
Offensively, it’s been about Rodgers’ dominance — 75-percent passing, seven touchdowns, no picks in the past two weeks — and about the rediscovery of Greg Jennings. A few weeks ago, coach Mike McCarthy saw how Jennings, a legit number one receiver, was being overlooked in the offense week to week, and he began to emphasize more plays for Jennings, more shots for him as the primary target. And he’s exploded since then. Check out the difference in Jennings’ first five games and his second five:

Ueeediot good point and yes I would say universally if a coach has to demand that the teams fan show up and cheer there is something missing from the fan base. This is a huge game, can’t imagine why a Falcons fan w/ tix to this game wouldn’t be jacked up, loud and in their seats by kickoff. Maybe I’m just too used to tailgating hours before the game and not battling ATL traffic to get to the stadium but still…
Lastly, I reacll during the Packers defeat of the Jets in NY most of their fans left in the 4th before the game was over. At that point all that could be heard in the stadium were Packer fans chanting “Go Pack Go”. I have a feeling this same type of situation is going to occur this Sunday afternoon in Atlanta…

Kurt,
We have a stupid downtown stadium. As much as I would like something else, this is what we have. So, yea, I would like a stadium “out in the country,” where folks could leisurely come in and tailgate and make it for kick-off. BUT WE ARE IN A MAJOR METROPOLITAN CITY, and it is just different. It is “studio” football. Networks love it. So folks have a hard time on Sunday morning.
Doesn’t make the team any worse, and gives no rise to discouraging our coach for pepping up the fans. Jeez, did you go to high school?
Just come back after the game, if you can “man-up” to it.

It’s been fun reading all of this bantering (B.S.) from both sides.I’m glad to see that some Packer fans joined in. Welcome and play nice. I moved up north once and know that the Packers have a waiting list for season tickets about 10 miles long and they are didicated fans. We, however, are enjoying the best team we have had since 1066, when we started. Our fans are so tired of hearing “wait until next year” so you will have to understand that, yes, we are excited to now have a team that can beat any team out there. Go Packers. Packers play better when it counts. I feel a good blowout coming. Atlanta is not being respected because they are winning games at the last second of games. Such the same as the Jets. Clay Matthews in Matt Ryan’s face should = turnovers. Good luck Atlanta!

Packers have the most devastating injury list in the NFL and are still one of the best teams in the NFL. Good luck to any teams as the packers get healthier every week. Should be a fun second half of the season for the Packers.

Hey Matt, not only should the Falcons even bother to show up – maybe we should jus declare the “CheeseHeads” are the greatest and end the season NOW? However i soooo doooo hope you will join us this Sunday evening after the game? Please come and be ready win or lose to give YOUR profound explainations of “WHY” you were right and “WHAT HAPPENED” on that last second opportunity, as we ALL would greatfully appreciate your “Walking Book of Knowledge” input. (imagine the voice of the immortal John Facenda from NFL films) In the storied history of the Atlanta Falcons it can be said that never has a team done so little with so much. From their humble beginnings in 1966 as an expansion franchise, the Falcons have shown that year after year, greatness is something to be strived for without consideration for past results. The Falcons pursue greatness each and every season and take on all comers without regard for a history so bereft of success.
Even repeated playoff failures cannot turn this team from pursuing a goal so large and inviting and yet year after year so out of reach. No one can ever say that the Atlanta Falcons approach any season with anything less than a level of optimism that their critics would say borders on delusional fantasy. For these are the Atlanta Falcons…
(queue the music, roll into film montage of failed season after failed season)

Jim, give him somewhat of a break he did say in the begining “In the words of John Fecenda” – without committed full blown pligiorism. Fairly good articulation i must say. I still enjoy being a “Redneck” though – i have found each day brings a new way of learning there are plenty of us that still know and beleive we are incompetent and there is more to learn.

Read the last sentence in the post – just meant in good fun. Don’t know what a ” ‘tingly’ up my leg” is – must be a southern thing,
In truth, my feelings were ambivalent. I wrote it to capture the essence of how fruitless all the optimism must be for the Falcons and their fans. But then, scarcity drives utility.
That said, enjoy the game.

Savage,
The “tingly” was a joke on when Chris Matthews said Obama “sent a tingly up his leg,” which was kinda weird for a commentator.
I know it’s in fun, but we gotta fight back when mocked.
Anyway, I really think this is gonna be a great game.

Count on me coach! I admit, I am late every Sunday because my church does not let out til noon. But I will change my routine for this Sunday and go to the 7:45 AM worship service so I can be on time for the game. This one will be tough, so we will do our part from the stands and you guys do it on the field.
Besides, I feel if I miss church service for the Falcons game that God will punish the Falcons with a loss just because of me. I know, weird, but isn’t the game of life weird at times?

Ok you cheeseheads bring your act Into our house and see what happens.I was at the Baltimore game and almost the whole bottom section was filled with Ravens fans.It didn’t help one bit. This aint’ the same ole Falcons and this town and fanbase are behind our team. The Falcons aint’ gonna lay down for the Packers. So give It your best shot.I bet our offense moves on your defense and our defense will stop ya when we have to.The Falcons are saying they haven’t played for 60 minutes yet this year.I know…scary Isn’t It.They plan on playing 60 minutes against the Packers.Time for a STOMPIN’.

Incidentally, D. Orlando formerly covered the Green Bay Packers for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Be that as it may…this is going to be one heck of a game. I’d bet on a 1-3 point differential either way when all is said and done. Both are very good teams and, I believe, the non-victorious team will be the one that puts the ball on the turf. Hoping for a good game, no injuries to either team – I’d hate to see either of these teams handicapped in their playoff hunt by injury…the Pack have already been decimated (9 serious contributors on I.R. – including, I believe 5 starters.) Seriously good game coming up folks. If you’re a fan of football … these are the match ups that you look for.

IntheShadowofLambeau – It’s a little different. Packers are steeped in winning tradition and are veteran tailgaters (as I know from MJS day). Falcons not so much. But this administration is working to change that. One thing is that they have to teach the fans about getting into the Dome of time.

Well, they’re doing a helluva job rebuilding the franchise, this is for sure.
Back in the day…the 70’s and 80’s…when whatever it was the guys in Green and Gold were playing on the Hallowed Ground was gawd awfully pathetic year-in-and-year-out, it was virtually impossible to get tickets even then. My group of die-hard tailgaters and borderline drunken fools, used to be in the Lambeau parking lot at 6 a.m. for a noon kickoff WITHOUT TICKETS. Haha.. we’d run a couple of 2×6’s between two vehicles, set up a TV with a generator in 10-degree weather and watch the game on TV from the parking lot-just to get the sounds and smells of the stadium. A couple of times it actually got cold out there and we’d become chilled – in those days, the Lions and Vikings actually played outside.
