Falcons DE John Abraham declared inactive for Rams game

ST. LOUIS – Falcons defensive end John Abraham, who has a history of groin problems, was declared inactive against the Rams with a groin injury on Sunday.
Abraham leads the Falcons in sacks with eight.
Abraham had groin problems earlier in his career, but had started 55 of the last 56 games for the Falcons, including all 16 games in 2007 and 2008. He started 15 of 16 games last season.
Lawrence Sidbury, who has been inactive for four of the last five games, was announced as the starter for Abraham.
Abraham recorded two sacks against Baltimore to give him eight this season, second most among defensive ends in the league. The New York Giants’ Osi Umenyiora went into this week’s game leading all ends with nine sacks.
Before missing the St. Louis game, the upgrade in his performance was dramatic. Abraham had only 5 1/2 sacks last season after registering a franchise record 16 1/2 sacks in 2008.
Abraham was named second-team All-Pro in 2008, but was a bit miffed that he didn’t make the Pro Bowl NFC team.
Other players declared inactive for the game against the Rams included cornerback Dominique Franks, running back Gartrell Johnson, linebacker Spencer Adkins, tackle Garrett Reynolds, guard Mike Johnson and defensive tackle Trey Lewis.

Mr. Charlie – you are right, still almost 45 minutes left to go. But poor play is poor play. What we are seeing so far today is why the sports pundits still don’t put much confidence in the Falcons. Someone at AJC.com must be paying attention… despite an exciting game of ups and downs… there was zero coverage of the actual game. But in the last 30 seconds, they changed the http://www.AJC.com lead page. Coincidence? Doubtful. AJC… please know that the 40 screen shots I’ve taken of your home page throughout the game will be shared with Arthur. He should know how deep your “commitment” to your city’s NFL is… pathetic! I challenge you to prove otherwise. I know small town newspapers who perform better.

The AJC post a headline announcing a Falcon win… pointing us back to this same sad blog. The headline of the blog announces John Abraham’s status. No headline of any actual status of the game… Way to go AJC. If the Falcons go into the playoffs, it will hardly owe any credit to the AJC for getting fans engaged. But what you will see is the almight AJC pinching coverage from an Associated Press writer about the Falcons game. If you aren’t clear about the role of AP writers vs writers in your own city… uh, it’s pretty shameful that an AP article appears. DawgGirl… no clue who you are or what your beef with me is. But I can only assume that you have friends or relatives at the AJC. Otherwise, no reasonable person can look at their coverage of the Falcons this season and be happy about it. Especially tonight. I’m not an Atlanta native, I know jack about the Georgia Tech team you seem to be fixated on. I’m a 11 year resident… and a 9 year fan of the Falcons. And I have a problem with the “local paper” not standing up to their responsibility. If you have a problem with my opinion of the AJC coverage of Falcon football, make a compelling argument. Short passes, long passes . . …who cares. Here’s what I see almost every week with this Falcon Offense. Big disparity in time of possession . . .Falcs up, often a good sized disparity in first downs, Falcs up, much less turnovers . .. …Good old Ice /Noodle – whatever . . . hasn’t thrown an Int in past three games, and he’s thrown it over 120 times in those games. Good signs, things you need in the playoffs!! Ball control and less turnovers . . . . . .of course you have to score too! Although it would have been nice to have 2 more TDs, or at least 1 more – being deep in redzone . .. .the Falcs have been putting good amount of points on the board.

Another good stat . . . .going into today’s game, our Offense was #1 in 3rd Down Conversions Made and also 3rd Down Conversions %. That is big!! It obviously ties directly to the Falcs being well ahead in the Time of Possession in most games . . . .if not all. (Note there also tied for 3rd in 4th downs made . . ..and #2 in 4th down conversion %.)

Great win today on the road which now virtually gives the Falcons a 10 win season (see below)! I’m really impressed the defense was able to hold the Rams under 20 pts without Abraham. The game next week should be one of the best this season…Falcons must bring the ‘A’ game…especially on defense, for 60 minutes, to pull it out against the Packers. Hopefully the home field makes a difference again as it did agains the Ravens.
Looking ahead, you’ve gotta believe the Falcons will be able to beat the Panthers in their sleep…so let’s give the Falcons a virtual 10-2 record. The good news is the Saints have already used up their season allotment of Panther gimmes. Other games beyond GB include Seattle on road, NO on MNF, and TB on road. The Seattle game looked tougher earlier in the season, and TB seems to play tougher on the road. That NO game could decide the division…what an atmosphere that should be.

Just a reminder for those complaining about Falcs only going for 1 to be up by 13 (20-7) last week against Ravens. Today, they again played the percentage move and went for one to be up by 6 (23-17). I liked the call last week, and again liked it today. With the % all they need is a FG to make it a 2 series game even if Ravens score TD and go for 2. It showed a lot better in today’s results then last weeks. But it was the same numbers game. A FG last week makes it . . .let’s say 23-7 or 23-14. That’s either up by 16 which is 2 tds and 2 two point plays. Very tough to do. 23-14 with a FG added on by Falcs again makes it a 9 point game. No “I told you so” . . ..but just trying to point out a good decision % wise . .. at least at the time it was made against the Ravens being up 19-7 (before going for extra point).

I’m just saying… it’s more than an hour after the game… still no AJC article. They are relying on an Associated Press article. I saw, expected, and was never surprised by this in my hometown newspaper in Virginia (population less than 10,000). You would think a city of more than 4 million people would have a newspaper that dedicated at least ONE person to coverage of the NFL’s leading team. Crazy on my part, I guess.

I havent seen you make one comment on how matt ryan played a good game or how we have a though opponent next week, and we need to get ready. All you’ve done is complain, and since you dont pay for the AJC website, they are not obligated to suit your every need. The AJC gave pregame thoughts, injury updates, and a postgame…I dont see what your problem is. NFL and ESPN literally give play by plays of the game so why should the AJC be obligated to provide superfluous information? They dont probably because they think their readers are smart enough to try and go to another website that is more suited for play by play. Actually the AJC.Com on my web browser actually has the headline being an article by DOL, not from the AP, and during the game they had the livetracker going (also linked by the front page) so yeah, they had updates. But you’re right – when the Falcons get to the playoffs, the AJC will be on the sidelines – because they’re reporters. That’s what they do.
I guess you’re upset that DOL was interviewing people and writing his article from St. Louis and therefore unable to reply to you in this blog. If he was replying to you in the blog, he wasn’t able to do his coverage…So yeah, sounds like the AJC can’t win this one. Damned if they do, damned if they don’t.
But hey, at least the Falcons can win something, right? Isn’t that what *really* matters?

B-rad . . . ..can’t complain about a 3-1 TD to Int ratio either. Hey, it would be great to have 0 Ints as the currently #1 rated QB in NFL . . . ..but from day 1 when Ryan was drafted, I read a lot of folks concerned with his 19 ints Sr. year in college. I saw all of his college games, and knew that Int # did not appropriately reflect his play . . ..but it was the # that was there. Since he’s been in the league he’s been in the middle of the pack in 2008-2009 seasons for Ints . . ..well “upper middle” in 2009, with some well respected QBs having more . . .. .this year he’s THUS far doing great. Good ball control offense . . . . not needing to force passes, good decision making . . ..leading to a pretty dominating offense in regards to time of possession . . . . .and hey 8 wins aren’t bad!!

And by the way, those questioning Ryan’s NFL ability, I have to wonder your knowledge of football or your honesty of making statements. Please, just admit you are not a Falcon fan and move on. That would be an honest statement.

The AJC has the right to cover the games however they choose.
You have the right to come on here or not. If you dont like the AJC coverage there are plenty of sites with lots of coverage.
Its called America dummy. Your acting like they should have covered a road game against a 4-6 team like it was the Superbowl.

When trying to sell me a subscription for delivery of the paper (which I had been reading for over forty years), I asked if they could deliver ONLY the sports section……………….because the rest was so liberal, I wouldn’t have it in my house. Answer: no.
