FLOWERY BRANCH – Pro Football Hall of Fame coach John Madden has selected the  offensive Line of the Atlanta Falcons as the Week 10 winner of his Most Valuable Protectors award.

Every week between now and the end of the regular season, Madden will recognize one NFL offensive line as theweek’s top performing unit.  Ultimately, the NFL’s best offensive line for the 2010 season will be announced at Super Bowl XLV in North Texas and receive the 2nd annual Madden Most Valuable Protectors Award presented by Prilosec OTC

trophy.

Madden noted that the offensive line has played well and helped the Falcons win three straight games and seven of their last eight.

This is the second time this season that the Falcons’ offensive line has been recognized as a weekly winner.

The Madden Most Valuable Protectors Award recognizes the fundamental role offensive linemen play in their teams’ success by providing consistent and reliable protection.

Atlanta’s offensive line, which is coach by Paul Boudreau and Paul Dunn,  was outstanding as the Falcons dominated the first-half, holding the ball for more than 21 minutes and seizing a 10-0 halftime lead. All three of the Atlanta touchdowns came as the result of scoring drives of 75 yards or longer in the 26-21 victory over the Baltimore Ravens. The unit also did not commit a penalty the entire night.

“The Atlanta offensive line has been solid all season with both their protection of Matt Ryan and their run blocking,” Madden said. “The Falcons line consistently plays smart, physical football without committing many penalties and rarely allowing opposing teams time to pressure the quarterback. The ability of the Atlanta offensive line to protect Matt Ryan is one of the biggest reasons Atlanta owns the best record in the NFC.”

The Falcons’ offensive line consists of tackles SAM BAKER (Southern California) and TYSON CLABO (Wake Forest), guards JUSTIN BLALOCK (Texas) and HARVEY DAHL (Nevada-Reno) and center TODD McCLURE (Louisiana State).

Rookie center JOE HAWLEY (UNLV) and tackle WILL SVITEK (Stanford) also saw action in the game against Baltimore.

Other offensive lines from around the league delivering powerful protection during Week 10 of the season included the DENVER BRONCOS (452 total yards, including 299 passing yards); JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS (326 total passing yards and 165 yards on the ground); NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (350 total passing yards); and the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (592 yards of total offense, including 260 yards on the ground).

I am curious about something. Why does this blog show the comments with newest at the top and all of the other AJC blogs (Mark Bradley, Dave O’Brien, etc.) have the oldest first? Is this something controlled by DLed or something in the browser setting? I only ask (and I apologize it is not about football) because it makes this blog harder to read having to go from bottom to top. :S

Lucky, I’m not ready to call Sam Baker a total bust, however I am concerned about his play especially after being selected in the first round. If we are unable to get Clabo and Dahl wrapped up in long term deals next season expect Baker to have a position change. Sam Baker plays hard but he simply has small hand and short arms. The more athletic Defensive Ends give Sam Baker fits. If he is moved to guard he would not be as exposed on the permeter. If he were moved to right tackle he would play to the strong side of the formation with tight end help… Either way, I am sure that T.D. has evaulated who is given up the most sacks as well as who they will have to pay next year to keep. Next season Mike Johnson and Garrett Reynolds both on practice squad but have been inactive all season will get long looks from this coaching staff.

By the way, where is Sid Vicious?? Don’t get me wrong I think Abe #55 and Bierman #71 are having great seasons but Sid #90 was coming on strong and has pulled a whodini on us this season…

D. Orlando Ledbetter, where is Lawrence Sidbury #90? Is he in the dog house? Has the team decided to save him in case of injuries? What’s up?

Sam Baker has improved his game this season. He was taking a lot of heat (and deservedly so) earlier in the season for his penalities and blocking mistakes, but he has played a lot better over the last several games. And he has remained healthy throughout this season (knock on wood). The line deserves a lot of credit for our offensive success. Go Falcons!

Baker was really having troubles early, but his last couple of games have been great. I’m holding out hope that he continues to develop. Would hate to have to use another 1st round pick on a left tackle next year. We need another corner and Turner ain’t getting any younger.
