FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan who passed for season-high 316 yards against the Baltimore Raves was nominated for the FedEx Air player of the week around.

Ryan completed 32 of 50 passes and had three touchdowns in the 26-21 victory over the Ravens. He tossed the game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Roddy White with 20 seconds to play.

New England’s Tom Brady and Philadelphia’s Mike Vick are the other nominees.

Fans can vote for one player in each category on NFL.com/FedEx through noon Friday to determine the FedEx Air  player of the week. The winners will be announced Friday evening on NFL.com.

FedEx continues its support of Safe Kids USA by making weekly $2,000 donations in each of the winning players’ names. The funding, allocated to local Safe Kids coalitions in that team’s city, is used for pedestrian safety improvements throughout the year, from upgraded crosswalks and safety signs to traffic barriers and educational training.

Sure am glad the guy we have replacing him has a great head on his shoulders and doesn’t require a prison sentence to be a great quarterback.

You should be more glad the guy who replaced him doesn’t have to deal with Greg Knapp as his OC, Jim Moron as his HC, and Rich McKay as his GM.

Too bad the Falcons couldn’t have found their Smith, Mularkey, and Dimitroff in ‘04, or else they may already have won a Super Bowl.

Matt Ryan did it against the Ravens defense. Vick did it against the Redskins defense. Yeah I’m more impressed with Ryan. The Ravens might be the best team in football. The Redskins are a laughing stock.

By NOT finding another quarterback while he was incarcerated in Federal prison??

You are so right Chuck. We should have waited around and just played Redmond for three years. Obviously, going to prison is no big deal. Give the guy a break. We should have been patient and just sat around and welcomed him back. I LOVE the story of the prodigal son, have even have put it in practice. HOWEVER, come on !

JEEZ, get real ! ! ! ! !

Eagles won’t make the playoffs.
Vick won’t make through the whole season.
Vick leaving the Falcons organization was one of the best things that ever happened for their team, fans, and ATL.

Matt Ryan had a great game – Mike Vick had a game for the ages. He deserves it hands down. The wack offensive system and weak offensive line were main the contributing factors to us not winning it all in the Vick Era.

“How did the Falcons miss the boat on Vick?

The Falcons missed the boat on Vick long before he got indicted. They missed the boat by not hiring a quality OC, GM, or head coach the entire time Vick was here. They missed the boat by not drafting a lineman in the first round the entire time Vick was here.

Moving on from Vick after he went to jail is perfectly understandable. Squandering his otherworldly talent for the 6 years before that by refusing to surround him with coaches, executives, and players who would help him succeed is inexcusable.

I also forgot to mention using first round picks on the illustrious likes of TJ Duckett, Michael Jenkins, and Peerless Price, all while trying to assemble a patchwork offensive line made up of undrafted free agents and 7th round picks.

All Vick is showing now is what he would have been in Atlanta with an intelligent offensive coach and a front office that did a good job assembling talent.

Thats great for Vick, he deserves this award. But the falcons are a better organization with Matt Ryan at the helm. Don’t forget the embarrassment Vick caused our city. I miss him as much as anyone else, but it’s not like we aren’t good. Back then, Vick was young and foolish and a clubhouse cancer, and there was no way he was staying on the team. We’ve come back from that low and we’re better for it. I wish Vick all the luck in the world but hate that its happening for Philly.

Ok…..Well first and foremost Vick deserves credit, it was a great performance from him on monday night. That Being said……I would take Matty Ice over him any game, i say that because yeah his legs help him out a lot but his decision making and accuracy are still a ??…..the NFL defenses naturally adjust to an offense(They did so when vick was here)….he WILL be slowed down, i am just really suprised by how much the media and some fans are on his ****……He hasn’t thrown a pick??….take away 3 and a half games i bet there are quite a few OB’s who haven’t thrown one…I am a Vick fan and hope for nothing but the best for him, BUT i am an even bigger Matt Ryan fan and believe we will get more out of the QB we have NOW than the one we had at one point(the one defense’s will be scheming against!!)

The eagles and falcons will meet fro the playoff, and mike vick is gonna show all you mike vick haters what time is. The Falcons have run all of their great players off, a.k.a Deion Sanders, won three superbowls, Andre Rison won a superbowl Mike Vick is going to win a superbowl now take that to the bank.

Vick is a great athlete, not a great person! When he flipped the fans the middle finger, admitted to not trying and playing hard… well that proves he is not a good professional either. Again, he is a great athlete, we’ll see how professional he handles himself.

Hats off to the guy for staying out of trouble, and he’s playing his tail off. He’s also a conference rival, though. He’s no longer our guy. I know Deion said (and I believe him) he wasn’t offered a new contract, but cant you tell this is no longer the falcons franchise of old?
Blank / Dimitroff / Smith have made this an organization with great CLASS. From no back to back winning seasons, to 3 straight as soon as they get here, and the #1 rated NFL team on the ESPN power rankings this week. Things have changed!

I love when people watch high light reels on Vick. I like to watch them to. I also remember ALL the plays that didn’t make the reel. Vick dancing around the pocket with happy feet and getting sacked. Getting the ball stripped because he’s running around with his arm completely extended. Blasting bullet passes when all he needed was a short pass with some touch on it. Diving head first into a defender because the SUPER ATHELETE couldn’t figure out how to slide. Leaving an Atlanta team that was built around him high and dry because the millionare had to thug it up dogfighting and gambeling. Lying repeatedly to the owner that made him the highest paid NFL player. You’re right, those were the good old days.

Decision making and accuracy are still a question mark? Did you even watch the Monday Night game? All due respect to Matt Ryan, who has made big strides this year and played a great game on Thursday, but that dime Vick threw to Jackson to open that game is a pass Ryan couldn’t make in a million years. He simply doesn’t have that skill.

@Najeh Davenpoop
it wasn’t just the offensive coordinator or head coach. Vick freely admitted when he was released from prison that he didn’t really try when he was here. He never really took it seriously or tried to be a student of the game. Ryan studies other teams, watches loads of film, and is ready on Sunday. That’s how you became the first quarterback in years to throw 50 passes without an interception against what is still a really good ravens D (though not as good as in the past). Vick never did that, and he admitted it. He relied on his talent alone. Sure, Vick has way more natural athleticism than Ryan (and almost everyone else), but Ryan puts in way more effort. The quarterback position is a mental position and you can’t just rely on your feet and strong arm, you need to be sharp and study the way Vick is playing now and Ryan has from the beginning. That’s a bigger reason we broke the 2 winning season in a row under Ryan and not under Vick.

We will never escape the Mike Vick shadow, will we? I’m sorry for contributing to it. Why do the Falcons get bashed for cutting ties with a player that was in prison? Why were the Falcons not allowed to move on and do what was best for their team at the time? Why are Falcons fans supposed to love a player that plays for a conference rival? He’s an Eagle now, and I hate the stupid Eagles. :) Why can’t I have my football loyalties simply because some people LOVE a player regardless of what team they are on? He’s not on my team so I am not going to root for him. I guess that make me a racist.

I would second what you said Lucky, but without the sarcasm.
It WAS a good thing. The organization just couldn’t have it’s face be someone who is in prison and continually makes poor choices. Forget how little he tried when he was here, he made way too many off the field mistakes that were stupid. I mean, if I’m on trial to go to federal prison and trying to convince a judge I’ve turned a new leaf, I’m pretty sure I don’t get caught smoking pot. Just dumb moves. Also everyone here that supports him remember that he flipped you off when he was here. He said “f” you when he flipped off the fans at the game and by taking your money and not trying or caring no matter how much he was adored.
you can’t tell me that Vick is only playing this well now compared to lots of fumbles, INTs, and incomplete passes that were thrown with no touch in ATL because of the coaches. That’s all Vick and he’s playing that way because he finally has to or else he ends up flat broke with a lot of debt. He didn’t have to here and so he didn’t. I love that after Vick, the organization passes on players like Moss now because it wants to be an organization that not only plays well enough to be the best of the NFC right now, but also is one of the classiest in the league. They don’t get penalized, they don’t talk smack, they don’t kill animals, they just act like classy football players and win games. They are role models for my kids. That’s why I love this team more than any other I’ve seen.

unfortunately this award doesn’t care how good the defense you played against was. Just how good the performance was. So this week Vick had the better performance and should win. But that doesn’t make me wish he was here playing for us by a long shot. A few good games in a year when he is desperately trying to get money doesn’t make him the best quarterback ever. He’ll get hurt running around so much (like he did here) and his level of play will come back to earth. He’ll still be really good even then, but not good for our team.

i heard a great interview on NPR yesterday with a long time Philadelphia sportswriter talking about his and other eagles fan’s struggle with whether or not to support him because of what he did. So to many die hard sports fans, there are more important things in life than winning or having a dynamic QB. I agree.
The best quote I liked from the interview was when he basically said that Vick is saying the right things right now and you want to believe him but you’re a fool if you believe him too quickly.
I agree that people deserve second chances and I’m glad he got one (somewhere else) but he has a long way to go in proving he is different now. I think that’s a big reason he hasn’t been resigned yet. The Eagles are still waiting to see what happens.
