FLOWERY BRANCH –  For his electric performance against Cincinnati,  Falcons wide receiver Roddy White was named the NFC offensive player of the week on Wednesday.

White caught 11 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns in the 39-32 victory over the Bengals and their reality show star receivers Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens.

White was 10 yards short of breaking the team record of 210 yards that he set last season against San Francisco. The 201 yards was the second-best day in the team’s history. Terance Mathis has a 198-yard game in 1998.

With a league-leading 54 catches for 747 yards, White is on pace to catch 123 passes, which would shatter Mathis’ record of 111, set in 1994. White set the record for most yard receiving in a season with 1,382 in 2008.

On Sunday, White also moved past Alfred Jenkins (360 career catches, 1975-1983) on the team’s all-time receptions list. White now has 369 catches. Mathis is the franchise leader with 573 (1994-2001) followed by Andre Rison’s 423 (1990-’94).

Now that that’s outta the way, it’s about time Roddy won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. He is very deserving. I hope the Falcons will continue to air it out after the bye week. GO FALCONS!!!

It goes to shows how hard work and perseverance pays off. Now if Jenkins would fight for the ball like Roddy’s learn to do, well….
I know Roddy likes to fish. Hopefully Matt has a nice boat picked out.

The fumble was just a great football play by Pacman. It wasn’t Roddy being careless with the ball. He was fighting for yards and two defenders were on him. He made up for it nicely with a timely first down catch, a touchdown catch, and an awesome 2 pt conversion catch.

I’m glad Roddy has grown and really developed in a top wide receiver. I had season tickets his first two years in the league, and I would always hold my breath when Vick threw him the ball. Roddy had a problem of dropping balls back then; I’m glad to see his hard work and dedication is becoming evident and paying off.

Roddy White was a victim of Mike Vick. Most of the balls he threw were to high to low or to hard for anyone to catch. As soon as Vick left White became a probowl receiver, his first probowl coming in a year he had to catch from about 3 QBs.Vick almost ruined his career,as well as jenkins while he was at it.

Just a few years ago, I was one of the fans that was calling for Roddy White to be benched or cut altogether. How ironic is it that out of everything that went wrong in 2007, he was the one bright spot? He admitted that he wasn’t putting in the necessary work, so he did what he had to do, and now he’s in the top tier of WR’s in the league.

Prior to the start of the season, there were people saying that he wasn’t a true #1. That is definitely not the case now. I’m sure that teams will really be looking to double team him going forward. That should open up many more opportunities for Michael Jenkins, Harry Douglas, and Tony Gonzalez.

Leave the reality show nonsense to Terrell Owens and Chad Johnson, two players whose off-the-field antics have long overshadowed their on-field performance.

Roddy White simply needed a quarterback who could do something other than throw it as far as he could. Just look at his numbers from 2007 with three quarterbacks – Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich and Chris Redman. Since getting away from the former #7, and I do realize they’re friends, White’s performance has improved.

Folks can call it a change in attitude all they want, but I am convinced that was a significant factor in the improvement.

Vick was never a highly consistent passer. Anybody remember the last few games he had for us? Twice he kicked the ball out of his own hand – pretty abysmal. But, Vick thought he was bullet proof, and made the mistake of being sloppy in his associations and track covering. He got off light. I miss his electricity, but it is tough to root for a guy with such deep character flaws. Schaub was the man, apparently – but Ryan is doing well – Ryan & White have better chemistry, plus we have a good cadre of options in the passing game. The next game will be a very important one – I hope both Spoon & Dunta are healthy – and, i hope we stick with the pass first, run to keep them honest mentality. Plus, we need to keep using the RB’s for pass protection – need Mughelli back too! Really like this team, if we get lucky, we could be going to Dallas.

Other than not preparing for games, not being able to read defenses, not having much touch or accuracy in his passing skills, not being able to see over his O-line, targeting one reciever on almost every play(Crumpler) no matter who else was open, and displaying zero leadership ability, Vick was a pretty good quarterback.

I told people years ago to give Roddy a chance. He was great at UAB. It is about work ethic. Its not about Vick. (For all those who are…get on with your lives please. This is a Falcons blog and last time I checked he was an eagle.) Think about the entire culture of the Falcons under Jim Mora. He was too laxed himself so that resonated with the rest of the team. Glad he’s gotten to his elite status. I took a lot of heat for supporting Roddy.LOL Now he just has to do this every game. No Falcon has been revered at the WR position for quite some time and I dont think ever has led the whole league. If he does this over the 2nd half….we may truly have a star in the making. i think he will though. Scorpios love the spotlight and power.LOL

With each passing week, the memory of Vick fades. It’s just a matter of time until he is a small blip on the Atlanta Falcons scene. I personally long for the day I don’t have to read or hear about Mike Vick as a Falcon. He’s gone. He’s passed. What might have been …what if’s an all that other garbage doesn’t count now. Folks, let’s just get on with building a winning team. Looks like the Falcon leadership has done just that. As fans we can cheer for that! Rah, rah!!!

@ Smiling…
Huh? And that is serious in my saying that… I won’t get into any of the silly name calling and snarky off the subject that permeates any blog when that subject is brought up… It is just not factual. You may hope otherwise, but it is not…

Congratulations to White on his honor. The thing that really jumped out at me was a number. 423… Andre Rison caught 423 passes in what amounts to 5 seasons. I know some of you will holler Run and Shoot. Go back at look at the other comparable R&S offenses, only Herman Moore stands out with that huge of a number of that period of years. He caught balls in Indy and produced here…

So “Smiling,” that’s why I say your statement to paraphrase MacArthur: “Just fade away” doesn’t hold water… Let the name calling and berating commence…

@ Reid Adair…
“Roddy White simply needed a quarterback who could do something other than throw it as far as he could. Just look at his numbers from 2007 with three quarterbacks – Joey Harrington, Byron Leftwich and Chris Redman.”
Since you like to continue making broad generalizations, lets breakdown the numbers…
In the 6 games started by Harrington (1-6), Roddy averaged 4.16 catches with a high of 7 catches in one game. So excluding that high game, he average around catches a game.

He had a breakout game in game 7 against the Saints when Leftwich and Harrington split the duties and he rung up 8 catches for 110 yds on a day when they combined for 27-41. Leftwich was hurt in this game, so Harrington returned to start in game 8. White caught 3 passes in that win against the Niners. 32 catches in the 1st half of the season. So short throwing Harrington and one 3/4 of a game with Leftwich produced those numbers.

Harrington/Redmen went 20-27 for 245 yds against Carolina in a win with White catching 6 balls for 57 yds. The next week Harrington/Leftwich combined for 31/47 against Tampa with White catching only 4! (Note: Jenkins had a career high 9 for 73 yds.). The Indy game, Harrington was 14 of 30, 6 of those were to White for 104 yds ()48 on one catch). Game 12 is the defining point of that year for White against the Rams. He caught 10 balls for 146 yds in the loss. Harrington/Redmen were 33/58.

The next week, the one from infamy; the 2nd Saints game. During the implosion game, White caught only 3 balls. Jenkins caught 9 for 83 matching his career high. Chris Redman went 23/40 for 298 in the Petrino desertion game. It was his 1st start since being in Baltimore.

The next game, White only caught 1 ball against Tampa. Redmen went 4/15 that day for 34 yds. In Hue Jackson’s 2nd game with full play calling responsibility White came out. 12 catches for 141 yds. Redmen went 28/42 for 315 yds against Arizona in the desert (loss). In the finale, White caught only 5 passes for 62 yds in a 44-41 Falcons win. Redman went 17/27 for 251. 83 catches for 1220 yards.

So in conclusion, the breakout season by White was hugely uneven. 4 games accounted for nearly half of his receptions. But from the outside looking in; the big change was Roddy White started competing for the ball. No matter the quarterback, or where the ball was thrown, Roddy fought for the ball. Before 2007, Roddy rarely adjusted. No pass more exemplifies that his drop in 06 against New Orleans. Take of this as you may…

@atljbo, nice link. The Falcons have the best overall receiver in the NFC. He’s got the size, speed, hands, and all the intangibles. The Falcons have one of the best TE, RB, QB in the NFC. Our 2nd and 3rd WR are very talented (but not yet achieving the way they could). With all these weapons, and an offensive line that has helped us to a top ranked running game for the last three seasons, and kept Ryan remarkably healthy, we should be an offensive juggernaut. What we saw against Cinci on the offensive side of the ball is just a glimpse of what they could be.
