101024 Atlanta - Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham sacks Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer during 2nd half action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 24 , 2010. The Falcons beat the Bengals 39-32. Curtis Compton ccompton@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH –- For the second game in a row, the opposing head coach paid major homage to the Atlanta defensive line rotation.
Philadelphia’s Andy Reid raved about defensive end John Abraham, defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux and the rest of the crew.
“They are explosive now,” Reid said. “Abraham has been in this league a long time. I think he’s playing at a very, very high level. I can go right down the list. Kroy (Biermann), that play first of all that he made (against Cleveland), that’s the way he’s playing. He’s playing fast and aggressive.
“Jonathan is a Pro Bowl player.
“They are getting great production out of Corey (Peters). If you can follow Corey with a (Peria) Jerry, then that’s pretty deep right there. That’s a good group. Jamaal (Anderson) is playing phenomenal football.
“They are all playing very well. I think you’ve got eight guys there that you better say, you better strap it on. There aren’t any weaknesses. They are flying around, they are stunting and playing good aggressive football.”
Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis paid them a great deal of respect in the 39-32 victory. The Bengals went almost exclusively to a no-huddle attack in order to keep the Falcons from rotating in their defensive linemen in waves.
The ploy didn’t slow down Abraham, who finished with two sacks to give him six for the season. Also, the two sacks gave Abraham a total of 42 sacks since joining the Falcons in 2006.

101024 Atlanta - Atlanta Falcons Kroy Bierman, top, and Brian Williams, middle, slam Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer to the turf for a sack during 2nd quarter action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 24 , 2010. Curtis Compton ccompton@ajc.com
He moved past Travis Hall (41.5) into fifth place on the team’s all-time sack list.
Claude Humphrey (94.5), Chuck Smith (58.5) and Patrick Kerney (58) top the team’s sack list.
The defense finished with three sacks and has 15 sacks on the season.
Abraham wasn’t the only defensive lineman to have good game against the Bengals.
Vance Walker, the former Georgia Tech standout, had five tackles. He had one where he just manhandled Cincinnati running back Cedric Benson in the hole.
“Vance is progressing well in terms of the number of snaps that he’s getting in the rotation,” head coach Mike Smith said. “He was productive; he had a couple of nice stops on the run. He came off of a double team and had a tackle for a loss in the backfield. . . we’ve got some guys that when called upon can step up and make plays and Vance is one of them.”
Also, Peria Jerry saw his most action of the season. He played 23 snaps against the Bengals. He’d been on a 10 to 15 snap count while coming back from major knee surgery. He’s gaining more confidence in the knee with each snap.

Regarding Sunday night I’m just hoping the Aint’s don’t embarrass the NFC South and get blown out by PITT.
At least try to keep the defeat in the single digits but that will be hard for the Aint’s to do.
- I hope the Aint’s fans are saving their paper grocery bags as we’re going to see the real aint’s fans by the end of the season..

From what I understand, Abe’s injuries may have been just the same abdominal/groin tear — essentially a hernia — over and over again. It had never completely healed. It would also be extremely painful. He is finally over that and is playing lights out! Keep it up JA!

Humphrey would be the highest paid end in the game if he played today. He was a total football freak when it came to the pass rush. He would go outside, inside, over you, under you, the spin move. If he didn’t sack you he at least touched the passer on every pass play. John Zook played the other end and he was outstanding also. All the TV guys in that day said they were the best book ends to ever play the game. You were either Humped or Zooked. Tommy played the middle lb and it was like being hit by a mack truck. I looked forward to the other team getting the ball.

Humphrey was only terrible against the run for 3 years (70-72) because he had that nothing special Don Hansen playing behind him at LLB. If you ran right on the Falcons back then; you had Zook, Brezina, and Nobis along with Ray Brown to clean up on the Strong side of the formations. That is why everyone ran left at Humphrey, Hansen, and Reaves. Humphey was always getting double teamed and Reaves was the cover corner.

THATS SOME GREAT FALCONS HISTORY JSS! GOOD STUFF! EVEN I BARELY REMEMBER GREG BREZINA. WAS IT FULTON KUYKENDALL WHO TOOKOVER AFTER HIM? RON ZOOK, RAY BROWN, THATS OLD SCHOOL BABY! AS FOR CLAUDE HUMPHREY, I THINK HE IS A HALL OF FAMER! DURING THAT TIME, ONLY DEACON JONES HAD A BETTER HEAD SLAP, OR PASS RUSH MOVES! BY THE WAY, DO YOU ALL THINK THAT DEACON JONES, HUMPHREY OR DICK BUTKUS COULD PLAY UNDER THESE SISSIE RULES UNDER GOODELL? LEAVE THE DAMN GAME ALONE ROGER!!!

Deacon Jones could play in every era of the NFL. He had power, speed, and a lot of intelligence… He was not Dexter Manley. Humphrey might have a problem simply because OLs get a lot more hands on you. He was country strong, he had to be a lot more mass strong to get it done now a days.
Dewey McClain replaced Brezina on the right side, Captain Crazy replaced Hansen in 1977.
Lofton is a good kid; but modern LBs just don’t make you have your head on swivel as the old days… I’m not discounting their athleticism, they get places on the field now that they didn’t get to before. People forget how fast Nobis and Butkus were, legit 4.6 in the ’60s. They brought pre-Georgia Pacific wood!

For years I was in the “media” business and now I schmooze with the likes of Orlando Ledbetter and Jeff Schulz. So, obviously, I know a lot. Fact is, I’m brilliant. Anyway, as important as that is, I do have a point to make (of course.)
Back when I was doing serious work, I won a Pulitzer prize for an article I did relating to my research on people that are narcissistic anonymous bloggers that submit under various names with the intent to annoy people. Current case in point, SeenThisB4. My conclusion, after exhaustive research is that these folks are nuts ! stendek
