Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris proclaimed the Buccaneers to be the best team in the NFC after their 18-17 win over the St. Louis Rams.

The good thing about the NFL is that he and his team will get a chance to backup his big talk. The Bucs are off to a surprising 4-2 start and quarterback Josh Freeman is looking kind of special.

After the bye week, the Bucs come to the Georgia Dome for a Nov. 7 NFC South Showdown. The Bucs play the Arizona Cardinals next week and have a chance to  move into a tie with the Falcons for first place.

Falcons coach Mike Smith was a lot more subdued in his post-game remarks.

Here are the highlights from his post-game media chat:

SMITH’S OPENING REMARKS:  “I know it’s a cliché, but you’ve got to play the game for 60 minutes and when you do that you’re going to get an opportunity to get the outcome that you want. I felt like we started fast and were in control of the ballgame the first, second, and fourth quarters. The third quarter was a little bit Halloween-ish in terms of it wasn’t a treat, it was a trick. I thought that our guys played extremely hard for the entire ballgame. They never put their heads down. They showed a lot of resiliency in terms of the adversity that took place there in the third quarter.”

ON RODDY WHITE’S MEGA-GAME: “You saw Roddy make some spectacular catches there, the one handed (catch) on the sideline early in the game. Wonderful play on the two-point conversation. Roddy probably to this point has been our best player on our football team through our first seven games. I don’t think there is any doubt about that. He came into this season in the best shape he’s ever been. He’s working hard and you are seeing the results of that hard work during the offseason out there on the field. “

ON THAT ZANY THIRD QUARTER: “There wasn’t a concern because it’s something that has never happened to us in terms of our football team. As I said, I think it’s a learning lesson. It’s a lesson for us as a team to find out how we can overcome those situations because believe me, when you’re up 21 to three at halftime and then you go down 25-24 when you start the fourth quarter, it says a lot about our guys. I don’t believe that they were over confident one bit. They know it’s a 60 minute game.”

ON THOMAS DeCOUD’S HEAD INJURY: “They would not allow Thomas to come back in the ballgame. Again, I don’t know how, I know it was a head injury. I don’t know what they’re calling it right now. Both he and fullback Ovie Mughelli were out after their injuries.  . . I know that both of those guys at halftime were ruled out of the football game.”

ON THE BENGALS MUCH HYPED RECEIVERS: “That’s a very talented group. Both of those wide outs that were out there today are guys that have had great careers. We knew that it was going to be a challenge for us. We knew that they were going to make their plays. Our biggest thing was that we wanted to try to keep the ball with those two guys in front of us and not let them throw it over our head. I think we had mixed results in that regard today.”

ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE PLAY: “I thought that the offensive line kept the pocket clean and that’s very important to be successful in throwing the football you’ve got to keep that pocket clean. It’s not necessarily giving up sacks, it’s keeping the pocket clean where the quarterback can step up and go through this progressions. I thought that they did a good job. Again, the run blocking by the offensive line was effective.”

North Florida- you got me. I was born in Jacksonville so it’s all good. Roddy White is playing All-Pro ball this year. As far as the Bucs, we should win because their primary deep threat is a tight end.

We need to take advantage of the bye week. Get everyone healthy, but don’t slack off. We have the Yucs then a short week to the Ravens on Thursday night 11/11. The Bengals have some good individual play makers but I like us as a TEAM. Keep it together, and keep on winning Falcons!

A maturity game for sure. Started fast like they used to two years ago. They fell behind in the strangest of ways, but they didn’t panic like Falcons teams f old. A testimony to the coaches and the players buying into “the process”. As impressed as I was by Roddy, it was Matt Ryan’s best passing day in a while. Cool as ever. I was so giddy after that win. Part of me though wants to see Coach Smith pull a Jerry Glanville and present the team a massive trophy for sweeping the state of Ohio.

Can’t you imagine what we could have done to them Cleveland yesterday if we still had MV7. I bet he wouldnt not have thrown the ball away so much and gave us up out lead in third qrtr. He would have run for a 1000 yards and run all their defense line. Mr. Author, please call Mike Vick back to work on you team. We need him back bad.

In two week we get to play Bucs. I bet we wish real bad MV7 still play on Falcons then. They will show Matty what the turf feel like on his behind.

Somebody needs to tell Coach Morris that he doesn’t have the Jets talent, so there is no need to adopt the swagger of Rex Ryan. It will only get your little team in trouble. Hell, look at the Cowboys. In the all you hear about is them playing the Super Bowl in there little new stadium and Owner Jerry Jones says anything less than the super bowl will be a setback. Well you guys see where that chatter has taken them so far.

Morris is only putting unneeded pressure on this football club. Mike Smith doesn’t make those kind of comments. Week after week, win or loose, Smitty says ” we have some things to work on and we need to get better.”

There’s confidence and there’s arrogance. We saw arrogance on the part of the Cincy receiving corps. I think what we’re seeing from Morris is confidence. We’d better not look ahead to the Ravens or we’ll get embarrassed by the Bucs.
Josh
Was correct earlier. Although it would be fun (as a fan) to see Smitty respond in kind to Morris–he’s much too smart to do it. His hallmark since arriving has been to say as little as possible/say nice things about our opponents and provide NO bulletin-board material AT ALL. The team seems to echo his style. Talk is cheap–let’s beat ‘em on the field where it counts….

My takeaways from the Cinci game
1. Matt Ryan IS capable of play action. The misdirection was *way* better yesterday and it made a difference.
2. The play calling was more diversified and it really uncorked the offense. The Falcons have been handicapping their offense with the play calling.

Both of these shortcomings were addressed this week and the Falcons are a much better performing offense because of it. Now that they have shown that they are capable, they must not revert to their past form. Keep working on the stealth and play diversity, and the Falcons will turn in more games like this one!

I agree with DOL. Atlanta is 5-2!!! We have by far the best TE in the league. Roddy White gets better and better each game. I will be shocked if he does not make the Pro Bowl. Although I thought Turner has not looked as fast as he did 2 years ago, he now looks like 244 lbs of shear hurt. As for Clevenland, the team has a coach who lets the players wild. There is no discipline. What kind of Coach condones a wide reciever send the opposing team taunting gifts. He may be an above average reciever, but White makes him look like a second string high school reciever. Don’t ge me wrong, Cleveland has two talented receivers who if they actually concentrated on football instead of reality shows, cereal, touchdown dances, bulleton board antics and tweets, they may actually contribute to a win instead of being mocked all over the country today. I think that Carson Palmer who is a decsent QB should beg to be traded out of the biology project gone bad that has become the Cincinatti Bengals. Maybe Minnesota could use him because he is way above TO and Ocho Zero.

As far as Coach Morris is concerned, I don’t mind someone being confident, however, to call your team the best team in the NFC in the seventh week of the season, is not only premature, but could prove to be very embarrassing later on. I think it shows very little respect for your opponent, sort of like what Ocho Cinco did. I have a strange feeling that in a couple of weeks, he will be asking for a glass of water to wash down his foot.

Hats off to Coach Smith and to Falcons organization as a whole for being a classy organization and a model of excellence.

Don’t be over-confident vs. The Bucs.

Falcons (like most Atlanta/Georgia teams) struggle when they are expected to win.

Tampa Bay has wins against Cleveland, Carolina, Cincinnati, and St. Louis by an average margin of +5 pts (take out the Carolina game and the average is less than 3 pts margin of victory). Very suspect strength of schedule. When they have played “contenders” (Pitt & N.O.), their margin of loss both times was by 25 pts. We should note that both losses were in Tampa Bay! Only two teams in the NFL are worse than their 16.3 pts per game. Only one team has scored less TD’s than the Bucs (10). One of their mighty wins is vs the only team with less TDs (Carolina, 7). Only 8 teams have given up more TDs on defense than the Bucs (16).

Best team in the NFC? You’ll get a look at that team in 2 weeks, Coach Morris!

Go Falcons! They are the best team in the NFC South. When we are at home we can defeat any team, and the Bucs are going to be sailing back to Tampa with another double-digit loss. The Bucs are getting hyped and Morris is trying to ride that momentum into next week’s game since he understands this matchup will be one of the toughest and most important games of the season. The Saints are inconsistent and the Panthers are…well…awful. The Bucs ship will soon sink and the Falcons will float to the top of the NFC South and never look back. Rising Up!

@Joe Tess Fish House – Joe my man, you are welcome here and your opinion is welcome here, but let me help you out a bit. Slow down a bit a and work on your spelling. People will respect your opinion if you try a little harder to present it well. Second vary your posts a bit. We got it that you want TO here and you don’t like Matt Ryan. Tell us something new.

Okay on The Blindside – loved the movie and particularly loved Sandra Bullock in those tight, white pants. Back to the game: I can stay with Blaylock for the time being, but Baker is a liability that we can’t afford. He has to have help, but that means keeping a back on that side or moving a TE over there which takes a receiver out of the pattern. Either way we are short on targets for Matt, but that is better than having Matt in the hospital. I am amazed that he got back in the game after only one play on Sunday. I cannot imagine that Smitty and Thomas don’t see it. I just hope that Smitty will address it before something bad happens.

5-2 going into the bye week. No serious injuries, should be almost 100% healthy against the bucs. Opening up the offense more each week. Pass defense still scares me. OVERALL- solid B…we have a football team that is getting better each week and growing as a team. Solid coaching staff…… I was more impressed this week when we blew the lead and came back and built another 2 touchdown lead. Nov and Dec will be fun and exciting!! one more thing…GO DAWGS!!

A good team doesn’t have to go out and tell everybody how good they are instead they just need to go out and do their jobs well each week.

Also Coach Morris knows that the BUCS are playing well over their heads so he’s just trying to squeeze as much as he can out of this team so he can keep his job for 2011. I think once we beat them 42-10 they will probably fall into a sharp downward spiral and finish the season 6-10..

During the bye week the Offense needs to study the PITT and PHilly games to see where the problems occurred and what we would do different now.

The Defense really only needs to watch the Philly game to see where/why they were out played and out coached.

We learn and make those ajustments from losing to these two good teams then playing weak teams like the BUCS (2X), PANTHERS (2X), Rams and Seahawks should be a piece of cake..

I agree JTFH, Koenen is not punting well this year, but he has a pretty good recent history so let’s give him a game or two. So far at least he hasn’t missed one yet. That would be embarrassing.

Why are they jumping on you Joe? Is it your speelling again, or is it that they just can’t handle your truth?

With “seenthis” not posting the average IQ for this blog has increased by 20 points.
DLed: enjoy the time off and keep up the good work.
Morris can do all the trash talking he wants, we’ll just keep proving ourselves on the playing field.
Rise up!

Joe I have to disagree a bit, Koenen’s hang time has been good and he’s been dynamite on kickoffs. Granted his punting has been better but I still consider him one of the league’s best.

Hey Joe Flush it’s not the punter but it’s the special teams fault. They are not making tackles and quiet crying to D LED makes you sound like a winnie girl

I have been a Falcons fan since 1979 which shows I am not a fair weather fan. The Falcons best season was 1999 but could not finish the deal because of Chris Chandelier (Chandler) turned back into himself against the Broncos. This year there is a chance to be special. There are only 3 teams to be concerned about unless the Bucs are good and not smoke and mirrors but with a week off to prep for them should net a win. The Eagles over history have some type of psychological edge over us then again we were not prepared and as long as their quarterback situation is a distraction its going to take its toll in the playoffs. Green Bay can pass but they can’t run period. The Giants are a danger because of the defense and if they clean up the turnovers are the biggest threat to us being in Cowboys stadium at the end of this season. I hope we learned like Dallas did and later the Giants did that when you have a team down you do not let up. Dallas was two plays away from a miracle let’s not let that happen to us the games are 60 minutes not 3 quarters or a half.

Not like the 1998 team at all… Chandler did not lose the Super Bowl, the Broncos stopped what we did best, run. Counterpoint, when Reeves went down, Brooks and Shell and the other assistants put that team into overdrive. They went on the road and annihilated some good with fine head coaches (remember the New England game).

This team does remind me of the 80 team in that you can be surprised by what you might get from week-to-week.They can look unstoppable in stretches. Then some teams will come out and literally slap the living taste of their and their forefathers mouths and just humiliate them!

And Smith needs to continue to be the smarmy person that he is… He doesn’t need to address Morris. Raheem is trying give his once battered roster some spirit and faith in them self… Just coach peroxide Mike; delegate, and put that stupid red flag away so that we’ll have some TOs when we will need them in a crisis…

I want to change the subject a little with a question. What happened about drug problem that New Orleans was having. I suppose Katrina or Bush had something to do with it going away.

Since Henry is running around being snarky about the Vicodin Scandal which involved initially the New Orleans Saints. Here’s is the latest regarding the DEA investigation on the matter. The case expanded into one involving “multiple” NFL teams, namely the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, the newly crowned Saints, and MLB team: the San Diego Padres. People have been tainted that were not guilty of anything like Chargers doctor Dr. David Chao. The pharmacy in question, “RSF Pharmaceuticals has served as a pharmacy for many NFL teams, as well as for other sports teams and organizations for many years. The National Football League requires that all its teams prepare their prescription drug audits using software which tracks the distribution of prescription medications. We regret that routine reports provided to regulatory authorities have created the erroneous impression that Dr. Chao had been writing prescriptions for himself which were filled through RSF Pharmaceuticals. To our knowledge, that was never the case.”

The DEA investigation stemmed from the arrest of former Chargers safety Kevin Ellison where he was caught by police with 100 Vicodin pills. A league source told National Football Post that the drugs were not provided by or prescribed by the Chargers. The DEA also got interested in the Chargers and San Diego Padres’ handling of prescription drugs after the New Orleans Saints’ offseason drug scandal.

This thing is bigger than the Saints. Like most scandals, they were just the tip of the iceberg… Be careful where throw stones, you may hit a unintended target…
