Sanders, nicknamed “Prime Time” for his style of play, was with the Falcons from 1989 to 1993 after being drafted No. 5 overall out of Florida State.

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that cornerback Deion Sanders is the latest inductee into the team’s prestigious Ring of Honor. Sanders was named the eighth member of this exclusive club by a vote of a local media selection committee.

Sanders said he was trying to convey a positive message with all of bling, but the message got lost.

Sanders said he was trying to convey a positive message with all of bling, but the message got lost.

The induction will take place at halftime of the nationally-televised Thursday night game between the Falcons and Ravens at the Georgia Dome on November 11.

“When I was dreaming as a kid, I couldn’t often times share those dreams because I thought they were so out of the box. Never would people think that a kid from Ft. Myers, Florida, who was small in stature, but big on confidence, would ever have his name recognized in a stadium in the only place he played in which he called home,” Sanders said.  “I want to thank Falcons Owner Arthur Blank and the organization (ironically 21 years later from the year I was drafted) for making my dreams come true.”

Sanders is a first-year eligible candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2011. He is on the preliminary list of 113 modern-era candidates.

During his five seasons with the Falcons he established a new standard for the cover cornerback and was also an electrifying kickoff and punt returner.

He had 24 interceptions over his Atlanta career even though teams elected to stay away from his side of the field.   He averaged more than 20 yards each season on kickoff returns and returned three kickoffs and two punts for touchdown.

In 1994, Sanders signed as a free agent with San Francisco. He would go on to also play for Dallas, Washington and Baltimore during the outset of the free agency era. He played 14 seasons in the NFL and won Super Bowl rings with San Francisco and Dallas.

Sanders was selected to eight Pro Bowls, including in 1992 and 1993 as a member of the Falcons.

Tommy Nobis, Steve Bartkowski, William Andrews and Jessie Tuggle were in the first class of Ring of Honor inductees in 2004.  Mike Kenn, Claude Humphrey and Jeff Van Note are also members of team’s Ring of Honor. Kenn and Humphrey were the last players to be inducted by the team in 2008.

The Falcons Ring of Honor was established to honor retired players who made significant contributions to the franchise during their

playing careers.

“Deion Sanders is widely regarded as one of the best cornerbacks in the 91-year history of the National Football League,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said. “He epitomized excellence on the playing field and was a tremendously gifted athlete who possessed great speed. Deion excelled as a defender, kick returner, punt returner and on offense on his way to establishing 12 club records.”

Only 4 seasons as a Falcon, how can you possibly induct him into the Ring of Honor? He left because he wanted more money, then disrespected the Falcons by proclaiming the Dome “my house” after he was gone. I loved watching him play but no way does he belong in the Ring of Honor, he only used the Falcons as a stepping stone. If he goes into the Hall of Fame, ask him which team he will go in as and I promise you it wont be as a Falcon.

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Excuse me if I don’t jump for joy. Deion Sanders was an incomparable cover corner / kick returner; and an equally insufferable human being. God, I hope he’s grown up.

Even when he was one of us, I’d cringe at some of his shameless self-aggrandizing on-field behavior. He proved time and time again that exceptional athletic talent does make one a good person.

Deion Sanders was an immature jerk when he graced Atlanta with his two-sport presence. He was an attention-craving, motor-mouthed, self-obsessed maniac. And not that it should matter, but the guy dressed like a combination of Liberace and Sammy Davis, Jr.

He bolted the Birds at his first opportunity for pastures that assured him a chance at a Super Bowl. Then he scorned the 49′ers for the Cowboys.

His first trip back to the A-T-L, he gets in a slap-fight with Andre Rison, then offers tehe post-game observation that the Georgia Dome is “his house”. Yawn… predictable behavior for Deion. Crass, graceless and totally void of evidence of an ounce of home training.

Deion played more NFL years as a 49′er, Cowboy, Redskin and Raven then he ever did as a Falcon. Why the hell are we inducting this guy into our Ring of Honor? He doesn’t deserve to be in the same company as the current honorees.

Congratulations, though Deion. Like Tim McCarver observed after you doused him with ice water – he was wired up with CBS microphone at the time; “You’re a helluva man, Deion”.

And if you didn’t catch that, Mr. Sanders, Tim was being sarcastic.

While I agree that Deion was a great football player he simply wasn’t a Falcon long enough to warrant this honor. This “local media selection committee” should be ashamed.

I agree with Jesse Stone, John, and DGator. Deion left the Falcons the first chance he got because he “wanted to get a ring.” He acted like a total jerk when he returned to Atlanta with the 49ers, who were then the Falcons’ most-hated division rival. He went from there to the Dallas Cowboys, my most -hated NFL team because they put us out of the playoffs after the 1980 season (still the most heartbreaking Falcons loss ever for me). When he was playing with the Falcons, he’d miss several of the Falcons games each season, so that he could play for the Braves. I don’t think he belongs in the same conversation as guys like Steve Bartkowski and Jeff Van Note. He was a short-timer here and I know that he won’t choose to go into the Hall of Fame as a Falcon. His selection does indeed cheapen the whole Ring of Honor idea.

As an NFLer myself. I have no problem with a guy like Deion taking advantage of free agency. It’s his right to do so, so hating him for leaving is a little childish. It’s HIS career. It’s not like he had a 1 hour special to announce it.

A well-deserved honor for “Prime Time.” He provided some excitement at a time when the team overall just wasn’t very good.

I remember it like it was yesterday, the day DS came to town. I remember the video of him at the airport, talking on a gigantic cell phone, surrounded by media, weighed down by gold chains. I remember the many moments that he electrified the stadium with his truly God-given gifts.

But the thing that I recall most is watching him mature. Realizing that “Primetime” is mostly an act. Realizing that Deon Sanders is a fine young MAN. Worthy of being a role model – that status to which people in the limelight unfortunately, often, have no choice.

After all of the accolades for his athletic achievements have been exhausted, we must also recognize the MAN. Worthy of our adoration as so few, who bask in glow of fame, truly are.

Deon, I am proud to refer to you with the greatest title of all. Deon Sanders, a MAN.

I was tickled to death to see Deion being inducted into the Ring of Honor. He deserves it.
This guy is the most talented player we’ve ever had at any position.
Some of the previous negative comments fail to mention that he was basically a kid and acted as most of us did when college age.
They also fail to take into account the fact that he has given his life to Christ and when that genuinely happens, the person changes…….. and he has.
On the basis of talent……….. he is incomparable and for those who wonder……. I’m white…… if it matters.

How in the world do you induct a player into the Ring when he was only played 4 years for the Falcons….then decided to to the free agent thing and go else where. I don’t care how good he was in the brief time he was with them, he doesn’t belong and shouldn’t be inducted since he didn’t want to play for them any longer than he did. Just a waste if you ask me and just my opinion.

Analyst, you are correct about Deion the CB. But the guy burned every bridge between himself and Falcon fans (at least this Falcon fan) so fast, the flames were burning his butt on his way out of town to SF. It’s what, over a decade since he bolted town, and a lot of us still haven’t forgiven him his graceless behavior towards us.

To me, the Honor of the Ring ought to be reserved for players who respected franchise and the fans. That sure ain’t Deion. It’s a warm place in Falcon fans hearts for a former player who represented their favorite team with loyalty and distinction.

Heck, I’d rather see MV7 in the ring 100 times before Deion once. At least Mike, for all his faults, was a loyal Falcon. And his on-field performance certainly warrant inclusion.

Mike,

You are way out of line. Nobody has hated on Deion. Jesse and others are stating facts. These are clearly long time hard core Falcons as am I. And I agree with them. Deion, did not conduct himself as if he was honored to be a Falcon. He did everything they are saying he did. I was a season ticket holder at the time and I remember it well. It was totally uncalled for the way he acted as a 49er. He kicked us when we were down when all we did was support him when he was here.

Jesse,

I like you posts, but I cannot agree with you brother on Brooking. Brooking was a pretender and a pile jumper while he was here and I saw every game he played. He was an abject disgrace last year during the Cowboys game. He should have been kissing our arse considering the millions he made here and the fact that he was a libility every season he was here except two or three. His tackle numbers were way padded.

“Only 4 seasons as a Falcon, how can you possibly induct him into the Ring of Honor? He left because he wanted more money, then disrespected the Falcons by proclaiming the Dome “my house” after he was gone. I loved watching him play but no way does he belong in the Ring of Honor, he only used the Falcons as a stepping stone. If he goes into the Hall of Fame, ask him which team he will go in as and I promise you it wont be as a Falcon.”

I agree – the other Ring of Honor recipients ought to be sickened by this idiotic decision.

This is a travesty, the voters should be ashamed. Deion epitomized the exact opposite values that the current organization supposedly thinks are importants. Deion will again make a mockery of this franchise when he’s inducted in the HOF as a Cowboy. I will stick around for halftime of the Ravens game so I can boo this classless man who is now going to disgrace the Ring of Honor with his induction.

It’s all “PR”. It’s “Practical Marketing”.

Deion is nationally known. The only Falcon other than…maybe..Jamal Anderson #32? Falcons players are not known nationally, and internationally. The Throw-back jersey is next for sale.

The ceremony will be held on Thursday Night Football on The NFL Network = PR, Jersey sales, classic posters, etc..and more people paying attention to The Falcons across the nation.

Sanders was a Raven as well (Falcons opponent Thursday Night Football).. So, the award will keep people interested in the game. Most people around the nation and Maryland would just assume that this will be a boring game, and that The Ravens would totally shut-down The Falcons. So, why watch the game? Ratings!

Since The NFL owners share the wealth amongst themselves in NFL Collective Bargaining, it generates the Falcons sales, and Jerry Jones (Cowboys owner) will probably do the same. So will the 49ers (The Yorks). None of Primetime’s former bosses will object because this will fatten the lot.

If it wasn’t for show-offs, the NFL would be bland, and up-staged by a start-up league. It rewards players for seeking the limelight–even the critics of these characters know this to be true.

Characters sell the game like The NBA, Boxing, WWF and UCF. The NFL knows what they are doing. Villains and Heroes.. Telling tales of valor..

Plus, this takes attention away from The Robinson-Jackson collision, and fines.

If it doesn’t make dollars, it just doesn’t make sense–especially to the people with the most money.

I’ve been following the Falcons since 74-75. The Falcons have had some really good players over the years, but not many at the same time. I remember the 77 defense that gave up only a 129 points, the fewest ever in a 14 game season. Maybe that whole D’ could be remembered one day. They were good!

Definitely, one of the best at his positions punt returner, kick returner and defensive back.

I thought the Falcons should’ve tried him at receiver for deep pass plays.

Prime Time performs effective outreach initiatives to kids that teaches life skills in a professional setting and in everyday setting. Deion gives back to the community making the world a better place to live.

To all you haters, grow up because you’re growing older. So you might as well grow in maturation. Peace.

God forbid a player exhibit a little personality and flair. Face it Falcons fans: All you really ever needed was me, #56 – your home town Hero! Oh, how offensive coordinators had to game plan for my explosive playmaking abilities. It takes skill to perfectly time your jump onto a players back so you can ride him down after 15 yards. It’s not easy to jump on top of a pile while managing to not injure your fellow defenders!!

The Falcons record during Deion’s 5 years was 30 wins and 50 losses. Deion’s talent was exceeded only by his ego and shameless self-promotion. It’s difficult to call the Falcons a “team” back then, because it was mostly a bunch of individuals running about trying to call attention to themselves. Ring of Honor??? How about the ring of DIShonor.

Ron Roberts

I realize the Falcons don’t have a long line of marquee players to put in their “ring of honor,” but this guy shouldn’t be one of them, anyhow. He didn’t stick around long enough to participate in bringing this franchise out of its doldrums, and I’m not saying that it’s his sole responsibility to do so, either, but if you’re considering putting a player in your franchises’ “Ring of Honor,” you should only put your team’s GREATS; for a few years, he was fantastic, but his better years came with other teams. Should the Red Sox put a bust of Babe Ruth somewhere in Fenway? Are we going to put Brett Favre in our “Ring,” too?

My childhood Falcons memories with regards to Deion Sanders were his clowning us on the field and his outlandish “this is my house” drivel in the postgame interviews. Not “Ring”-worthy.

Deion Sanders…, one of the greatest cornerbacks to ever play in the N.F.L. Even for the limited time he played in Atlanta, he is the greatest cornerback in Falcons history. Pridemore, Case, Butler, Lawrence, Buchanan, Hall, and any other falcons cornerback, all take a backseat to him. It often seems in Atlanta, when there’s controversy involving a Black Player, “certain segments” of the populace find every reason in the world to try and discredit him, while never acknowledging the futility this franchise has endured while being owned by this same “certain segment” of the population. In fact this franchise has only made the playoffs a handfull of times in almost 50 years in Atlanta, and the ones this “certain segment” loves to hate were the ringleaders whenever the Falcons advanced past the 1st rd of the playoffs. But Players who weren’t 1/10 as good as Deion get a free pass from this “certain segment”.

The guy is a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Seeing that the Falcons just recently had two successive winning seasons, it’s a wonder that they even have a ring of honor. In all the years of futility, you “Falcons Fans” should be happy that there was one shining star on your team in the early nineties.

Whoever is in charge obviously blew it by not putting a minimum number of years a player had to be a Falcon (say 8) or play at least 80% of their career with the Falcons should that career be cut short due to injury.

I’m certainly not taking anything away from him and his achievements and contributions to the Falcons, but I agree with the multitude of folks that disagree someone with only 5 years with the team be so honored.

And to have the “local media” pick it is a joke. Those retards couldn’t pick their nose. You gonna tell me Sanders meant more to this franchise than the original Dirty Bird Jamaal Anderson? I don’t think so!

Though Prime Time only played 5 seasons as a Falcon, statistically, he was the most productive Falcon ever. His role as a cover corner was to shutdown that side of the field on pass plays. He did that better than any other corner the Falcons have ever had and was one of the best to ever play the game.

Funny how most of his haters on here never played a sport at a high level and are just jealous of his success. Seems as though some people’s memories are blinded by their jealously….REMEMBER the Falcons did not make Deion a contract offer. Additionally, the organization was not building a championship caliber team at that time and in pro sports the only thing that matters is winning a championship (and making as much money as possible since it is a business).

Funny, you seem to be confusing individual honors with team honors. You say I don’t have an understanding of the word “team”, but then you turn around and say those not on a winning team aren’t winners.

Wake up – the Ring of Honor IS FOR INDIVIDUAL PLAYERS YOU IDIOT – not great teams in Falcons history.

Using your logic, no player should ever be elected into the HOF unless they played for a winner.

You are one mixed up individual. Go snort something Nostrel.

The discovery that Don Meredith never led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl in his 9 seasons with the team by Sir Nose has led to the Nostrel’s demand that he be removed from the Cowboy’s Ring of Honor since he obviously played with losers on those Dallas teams and all that shows is Dallas’s accepting of losing!

what a joke this is. Neon Dion’s primary function at his position is to tackle opponents. He did this poorly every game. A tight end carried him into the end zone with Dion hanging on his shoulders. Got burned many times. Yes, he had some exciting interceptions with long run backs. He just does not have the performance level deserving of any award. HOF is a bigger joke. Not sure who was worse, him or MeAngelo.

Gwinnett Fred,

Wow, what clever name calling. Pretty juvenile, don’t ya think?

First, Barry Sanders was always unhappy with his current contract, and was forced into retirement because the Lions refused to trade him to a playoff-caliber team.

Second, Jim Brown was nothing but a malcontent his entire career in Cleveland.

Third, it seems to most on this blog that a player needs to be a choir boy who played with a single team at least a decade in order to be recognized for otherworldly play . Gayle Sayers did not.

So, again, using you and others’ logic, Deion Sanders and the aforementioned players should not be honored even though they played exceptionally?

Curse, is your personal value system so corrupt that all you can do is peck out all-caps rants against REDNECKS who are “hating on” (damn that’s a tiresome phrase – you got anything better than that Curse?) Deion Sanders?

And this HICK takes exception to your dismissing my life’s accomplishments. I never returned an interception for a touchdown, true enough. But to my credit, I never cheated on my wife and I never made a half-assed attempt at suicide while my wife and children waited at home for me. There’s the mark of a real man, huh? Deion’s havin’ a bad hair day, so he attempts to off himself. So much for fatherhood.

Entering the Falcons Ring of Honor ought to be about more than utilizing an abundance of God-given talent. You ought to have to shown respect for the organization and the fans. You ought to have displayed a modicum of dignity.

So next you’ll tell me how Deion’s a great guy because he doesn’t have a criminal record. The bar for evaluating manhood is mighty, mighty low.

Hell Curse, the more I think about it, you’re probably a 16 year old kid. You don’t know any-damned better yet. But you need better taste in heroes, and you should stop the name-calling.

As a falcon fan for 40 years (i’m 40 …ha) , there’s a part of me that having Deion in the Ring of Honor just doesn’t sit well with me. He spent a better part of his career on other teams and left for the money among other things. Of course, the Falcons could have tried to spend more to keep him, but I think he was gone regardless. This seems to be all about having him be the first “original” Falcon in the Hall of Fame. I just wish it was a “true” Falcon like Claude, Bart, Nobis or Tuggle in the HoF. Players who spent the better part or all of their careers with the Birds. Still, I guess it will be good to at least have a Falcon Uni in the HoF finally. I don’t dislike Deion by the way. Just never felt he was really a Falcon – his time was so short.

Barnes:

Nice job of totally changing the subject.

YOU SAID: Using the logic that he only played 4 seasons in Atlanta, using that same standard should keep Barry Sanders, Gayle Sayers & Jim Brown from being honored by their teams.

OK Dummy – in case you don’t have the brain cells to put 2 & 2 together, let me do it for you.

D.Sanders – Played for FIVE DIFFERENT teams
Brown, Sayers & B.Sanders – Played for ONE TEAM THEIR WHOLE CAREER

D.Sanders – Played 5 seasons for the Falcons and NINE for other teams
Brown, Sayers & B.Sanders – Combined to play 25 years for their ONE TEAM

Are you serious in trying to compare these examples of yours??

Do yourself a favor and just admit it was an absolute brainless thought on your part to even consider to compare Deion to Jim Brown, Gayle Sayers and Barry Sanders with respect to what they are due from their former teams with regards to being honored.

At least have the guts to admit you made a stupid statement and move on – only real imbeciles try to justify the unjustifiable.

I love all of these people who just are unwilling to come to grips with how bad this franchise “was!” Even with the stabilization of the Vick and Ryan years; this franchise is still fighting with the Cardinals for worst winning percentage in the history of all of professional football history!!!

@ Gwinnett…
Sayer never carried the big load with the Bears, but he and Sanders are the two most electric RBs to ever play in the NFL. He could change the game with a step. He’s simple to understand, the Bears became Falcon like when he was not available. He averaged a TD a game in 1965. Again, he averaged a TD a game playing with the likes of Rudy Bukich for goodness sake!

All the rest of you need to chill, the Falcons did this to themselves, again! Deion is as deserved as any of the clowns that have played for such a impoverished franchise!!! Don’t you find it interesting that this team is always mocked by the ex players on field and in the media after they leave? Ain’t nobody in the current Ring who did diddly squat for the Falcons’ overall winning percentage (as you point out in your 7:14 post). This organization just enjoyed it’s first consecutive winning season in 44 years.

Still doesn’t diminish the valid objections to a guy who comported himself as poorly as Deion did being honored by a city and organization he basically shat on.

And what in the world has Deion done or said since his tenure in Atlanta to mend the fences he broke? Not a damned thing. He’s still as self-centered and clueless now as that day in 1989 when he got here. I hope he dresses better.

Bottom line, he’s in the Ring. Life goes on. Here’s one guy’s hope that there are more than a smattering of “boos” when he struts out to accept this most undeserved honor.

Honestly, I can’t believe he’s got the nerve to show up. What am I saying? We’re talking Deion Sanders here. Nerve has never been in short supply.

What has Atlanta done to reach to him in turn? The worst thing about Atlanta and the South in general in all things is that always feel that someone has done them wrong! From the creation of the Nation to something as simple as a football game, there is this insidious whining that they decry in anybody in generally a sexist or culturally bigoted way. Deion doesn’t owe Atlanta an apology for one thing. It was the early 90’s, the man pointed out his shortcomings as a person by the way in his book. Again, the only people who don’t ever move on in this Country are people in the South. I was born and mostly raised here, it is a character flaw of the region. Southern hospitality and smarmy manners does not cover it up anymore.

Humphrey did not “retire” out of choice, Bennett and Glanville installed the 3-4. Humphrey was going to relegated to to the 3rd string DE. He choose to leave then. Some people ought to be shamed for talking so bad about another human being! Really shows their true character and where they are spiritually. I mean…what has Deion ever done to you! I and most true ATL fans do, hold Deion as the greatest Falcon ever! He was the only reason we used to watch or go the Falcons games in those aweful, aweful days! And he done that in only four years time! The reason why he left ATL was because he knew, and was right, that we weren’t comitted to winning. He is STILL the greatest Falcon ever and will be until someone out-plays him, which is a tall order! Til this day their hasn’t been, besides Vick, anyone near the level of Prime! So what some of you overly emotional hypocritical “fans” want to say about Prime. The Falcons are finally doing the right thing and honoring him as the legend he is. Despite what you might think of Deion as a person. No one was better than him on Sundays! And even in those short four years of him being here in Atl. He has given us more fond memories than most, if not ALL, of the players in our ring of honor! What people don’t seem to realize is how Deion brought a standard of excellence here! You can’t come to Atl wear number 21 and not be the absolute best! With that said…Chris Owen needs to change his number! Nobody should be allowed to wear number 21 AGAIN!!! AND GOD BLESS U HATERS!!!

My memories of Deion:

1.Opening kickoff against Buffallo (I think Deion’s rookie year) – Bebe breaks up the sideline and gets caught by Prime Time at the 10 yard line. Bebe couldn’t believe anyone could catch him from behind -priceless.

2. the Dance

3. Riding any player to the ground like he was tackling a hog

4. “my house”

5. electrifying returns

6. holding the Braves and Falcons hostage when he wants to play both sports in one day (kudos to Bobby Cox for not starting him). And further on that note, he didn’t practice with the Falcons during the week so he could play with the Braves in the post season (I think this happened when he was with the Reds too).

7. On his motorcycle running over a cop in Cincy

Not worthy of the ring – if he had more years here, maybe…

I’m happy the Falcons are doing this for Deion. I remember walking into the stadium late for his first game and he was in the process of fumbling then taking the punt return to the house. I never missed an opening kickoff after that. There have only been two real drawing cards in Falcons history, #21 and #7, that could sell tickets both at home and on the road. To the people getting bent out of shape for Deion’s induction to the Ring of Honor, is the real reason the fact that he left in Free Agency,or the fact that he was too flashy, or is it your usual bigoted selves coming to the fore. Everyone who plays sport whether in college or the Pros prefers to go to a team where he/she has a chance to win. Joe Montana left San Fran,so also did Jerry Rice, when they believed they still had more to offer. Are the guys signed by the Falcons as Free Agents such as Abraham,Robinson, bad guys because they wanted to increase their earnings, and also have a better chance to win. Should the Chicago Cubs not honor or employ Greg Maddux, because he left in Free Agency for the Braves.
The Falcons under the Smith’s ownership was at the bottom of the NFL, with no sign of escaping the cellar, anyone with ambition of winning a ring would have jumped at the opportunity. If Arthur Blank was the owner then there is little doubt Deion would have left for San Fran, because, you see Arthur and his team gives hope to the players and to us as fan, and we are no longer cellar dwellers, and therefore can get free Agents to come here instead of only leaving here as soon as they can.

Comparing him to the other named honorees is somewhat like comparing low class to the top of the class. A player perhaps, but no real contributions otherwise. When compared to the others, he simply does not measure up. His inclusion stains the entire ROH. He simply does not belong. There are other FALCON PLAYERS WORTHY of this HONOR.

I believe Deion played 5 years with the sorry Falcons, in fact he played here longer than he has for any other Franchise. Despite what anyone who thinks he is not deserving may say, true fans who witnessed his cover skills, and his brilliance returning kicks and punts, as well as the media folks remembers that except for Deion and a few others the Falcons were irrelevant nationally, and even here in Atlanta.
It is not surprising to see the response by these Bigots,it is similar to all the negativity towards Herschell, because he stated that the indiscipline in the Georgia Program needs to be addressed. The truth always make the Bigots mad.

Seriously, he deserves the Ring of Honor because he brought some excitement to the NFL and made people want to watch the Atlanta Falcons… Keep it real, we didn’t have much going for ourselves despite the 1978 and 1980 season. When he got here, he made ppl want to attend the Falcons game. That man wanted to be a Falcon as long as he wished… It’s funny how we forget the 1990s Braves run.. He was a part of that special time in Atlanta. He should get the utmost respect from Falcons fans smh….If he don’t deserve it.. Who do??? Joey Harrington?? Chris Chandler?? Jeff George?? Chris Houston LOL??? Need I go on…. Yeah, I thought so…. Proud of you Deion and for all of yall negative bloggers, why don’t you start coming out to the GA Dome and sell it out each weekend instead of blogging all day smh

Sanders is a punk. He begged June Jones not to franchise him. He promised he wouldn’t leave and he got out of dodge as soon as he could.

He really brought into the NFL the ME ME ME generation of NFL player – “Screw the team, what’s in it for me?”

Because of Deion we have a current generation of NFL defensive backs who love to celebrate a good tackle after a 20 yard completion or try to “take the ball to the house” instead of running out of bounds or falling on it. (I am looking at you Dre Bly and Nate Clements)

My life long love for the Falcons tastes like ashes.

@PHILLY FAN IN TEMECULA CA …It sounds to me like the only clueless geek around here is a Philly fan in CA who feels the need to comment on a Falcons related story from an Atlanta paper. Your comments themselves are not only moronic and fraught with errors, but seem to be literally begging for attention. My guess is that you post here because taunts are all you’ve got. Serious Phillies and Eagles forums probably want nothing to do with someone who can’t contribute anything other than “GO PHILLIES——GO EAGLES.” That level of having no life is, well, to borrow your phrase, “brutal and embarrasing [sic].”

Is Deion arguably the best COVER corner ever? Absolutely. Is he worth of Hall of Fame induction? Of course. Should he be in the Atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor? HELL NO!
He played here for FIVE of his EIGHTEEN years. He left us when he told June Jones that he would give us a chance to match any offer. He LIED and snuck out of town. That is not HONOR. He then came back to town and was far from gracious. There are players that played here longer that actually wanted to be here. Deion did not, and we honor him? The atlanta Falcons Ring of Honor means nothing now. I am really sorry for the men that have to share this “honor” with Deion.

However, may I suggest that in the future the Falcons Ring of Honor be reserved for Falcon players with a minimum 10 years on the team except in the case of an career ending injury. A little bit of marketing here wouldn’t you say……………..

JSS (8:08 pm last night)
I guess I hold the folks in the South in slightly higher regard. There may be truth in what you say. I’m a transplant from Chicago by way of Beaverton, Oregon. I sure as hell noticed differences. Some were actually good differences.

But back to DS. If you remember the kid who strutted off the FSU campus into Atlanta’s collective sports conscience back in 1989, you may also remember that his demeanor was not what you’d call “low-key”.

Quite the opposite, and by his own design, Deion fancied himself a “personality”. For sure, he was a big man in Tallahassee. Now America was gonna get Deion-ized. And Deion-ization was powerful stuff for awhile. Hell, his mark still remains on the Braves – ‘Chop, anyone?

But the deal is, Deion’s ways are off-putting to many. Those of us who don’t much care for him have tried to explain why. Deion was the kind of guy, if you wanted to compliment him, he’d cut you off mid-sentence to tell you himself why he’s so great. Most of our parents, or any mentor worth a damn, taught us as kids that’s not the way to go through life. Deion either missed that lesson or chose to ignore it. Either way, it’s been to the mutual detriment of us all.

Deion was (probably still is) an ego gone completely mad. His every public action was self-centered. His every public comment was Deion-centric.

It’s fortunate for him that his athletic skills were so great, because they, and they alone, saved him from being a complete self parody (see Brian Bosworth).

Deion Sanders, the personality, was a graceless, undignified clown. Deion Sanders the cover corner/kick returner is a hall of famer – the burden of his many negatives notwithstanding.

But it’s those negatives, that should deny him a place of honor within the Falcons Ring as far as I’m concerned.

Of course, I haven’t purchased a ticket to a Falcons game since they played at Fulton County Stadium. So who cares what I think?

John

“As long as Deion goes in before Patrick “I Don’t Know Anything About A Rape In My House, I Was Fast Asleep” Kearney, or Dany ‘I’ll Drive Fast Enough To Have A Wreck And Kill My Team Mate’ Heatley, i’ll be satisfied!!!!!!!”

Amen, Tired Of It. Talk about Teflon coating. Patrick Kerney must bathe in the stuff. The local media gave that incident a cursory glance, then dropped it quick, fast and in a hurry.

That was a sorry display.

@ John…
Chicago and Oregon were the results of migrations, those folks always brought any biases they had with them from somewhere else. Unlike my fellow Southerners, they created this environment. As someone who was born here and has lived in every section of this country excluding the badlands. I can tell you that the brand of phony cordiality being played off as “Southern hospitality and manners” is just that, phony! I rather you be ruff and gruff, than phony to my face.

So keep holding on to that grudge you have about what Deion was, is, or may be. It says way more about you than it does about Sanders. See I can understand why people built statues to Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was a great leader of men in terms of military strategy. Nevertheless, he was as detestable of a human being as this Nation has ever given birth to… So try putting Deion Sanders in his proper perspective.

pb

October 23rd, 2010

Why does criticizing Deion automatically make you a ‘racist’ or a ‘redneck’? He was a loud mouth and self-centered person off the field. But a great player on the field, even if he shied away from getting hit. Don’t think he should be considered one of the best ever on Falcons, however.

And JSS, to add just one more stone to the pile that indicates I need a freaking life: I hadn’t given Deion a moments thought for years (decades). That’s how long it’s been since he was part of the Atlanta sports community.

Now he comes back like that bad tooth that you never had pulled. You teach yourself not to bite down on it, but sooner or later you do and the resulting toothache is a mother.

It’s baaaaaaaaack.

Gerald Riggs should be next. Maybe Chuck Smith who I believe ranks like 2nd or 3rd in sacks for Falcons all-time. Warrick Dunn should get some consideration too not just for on the field but he was great in the community. I think the Falcons ring of honor is a bit of an oxymoron. These are the Falcons. I am deeply troubled! This has the feel of a loss instead of a win. The Falcons went completely braindead in third quarter. Mental confusion stretched over final 15 minutes. A championship caliber team would have put up a minimum of 60 points. A championship caliber team would have never relinquished such a monumental lead on home turf. The Bengals ran the same pitch and catch play at least a dozen times. No defensive adjustment was ever made! All true Falcons fans know the play I refer to. Defensive ineptitude was absolutely abominable! Allowing 32 points to anyone is totally unacceptable. Offense put up points but crushing giveaways by Matt Ryan and Roddy White got Bengals off life support! Underthrow by Ryan resulted in interception instead of TD. White just dropped the damn ball for a Bengal TD! Tarnishing his otherwise solid performance. Am I happy with W? Yes. I am just happy it was the hapless Bengals instead of a solid NFL group. Lot of work to do. DAMN LOT OF WORK! STENDEK

1-Didn’t I tell you you’d be hurt by your SORRIER THAN LAST YRS SORRY 25TH RANKED DEF?
2-Didn’t I tell you about the short term success one gets when building through trades and FA?
3-Didn’t I tell you about the dropoff you’d suffer when your old, and/or way past their prime playmakers are unable to duplicate last yrs performances?
4-Didn’t I tell you the AINTS would suffer the same fate of other Super Bowl participants, and end up looking more like the 08/09 8-8 AINTS than the 09/10 Super Bowl AINTS?

Anyone that judges a city based solely on sports is admitting their city doesn’t have much else going for it. And anyone that thinks Philly can hold a candle to Atlanta as a desirable city is flat out stupid and/or crazy. There’s a reason Atlanta, not Philly, is growing, and has been doing so for decades.

Dieon Sanders is a disgrace to the Falcons and the city of Atlanta. He didn’t build the dome or ever tackle anybody in the dome. If he gets this reward, I will never spend another penny in the GA dome and give the Falcons tix I have now to charity. He only cares about himself (think Dez Bryant or any interview he has ever given). Aurthur Blank – If this is what the Falcons history is to you then you don’t need my money. Mike Kenn, Tommy Nobis, Keith Brooking, Dan Reeves, Steve Bartkowski … that’s who the the Falcons are!!! If you give this honor to Dieon, then give it to Mike Vick, Andre Rison, Chris Miller and every loser who ever wore our colors. This is the ultimate discrace to Falcons history!

Ken Strickland

DIRTY BIRD-Don’t blow this thing out of porportion. Dion was the ultimate team player, and did everything he could to help both the Falcons and Braves win by playing both sports at the same time. Remember how he flew back and forth between Falcon and Braves gms. He wasn’t drafted to tackle, but to be a shutdown CB, and he did that as well as anyone in NFL history.

To be honest, if you follow through on your threat with your tickets, is shows you aren’t that much of a Falcons fan to begin with. We aren’t going to win a Super Bowl based on who’s in the Ring of Honor anyway. Give the Falcons of the past your respect, but don’t stop giving the Falcons of the present your support.
