Dunta Robinson fined $50,000 by the league

SPORTS FBN-FALCONS-EAGLES 17 PH

Falcons cornerback Dunta Robinson was fined $50,000 for his hit on DeSean Jackson by the NFL on Tuesday.

Ray Anderson, the league’s executive vice president of football operations, is looking into ejecting and suspending players who make helmet-to-helmet hits in the future.

“Future offenses will result in an escalation of fines up to and including suspension,” Anderson wrote in a letter sent to Robinson.

Robinson, who suffered a concussion on the big hit he put on Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson on Sunday,  will not likely be cleared in time to play against Cincinnati.

“I think that we all know Dunta, he’s been in this league a long time,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said on Monday. “He’s a guy that plays the game very, very hard. That was a bang-bang play in terms of the contact. From my vantage point, it looked like there was no helmet-to-helmet contact. But it was a bang-bang play. I’m glad that both of those guys are going to be all right. It was a big time hit.”

The Falcons were off on Tuesday, but on Monday several players supported Robinson hit and thought it was within the league rules.

“This is a violent game,” defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux  said. “Any tackle is never going to be perfect. We are always emphasizing to wrap up and take guys to the ground. When you are in the game and everything happens in a split second, you are just trying to get the guy down as quick as you can. It’s a reaction game. You’re not trying to hurt anybody out there. You want to see everybody do good and be healthy. We know injuries are going to happen.”

The Falcons don’t think they’ll be label as a dirty team.

dunta robinson, eagles“We are a clean team,” Babineaux said. “We play right. We do all of the things that are good for us to win out there.”

Robinson, a native of Athens, was signed to a $57 million ($25.5 million guaranteed) over the offseason. He played his first six seasons in the NFL with the Houston Texans.

The Falcons signed him to help improve their secondary, which finished 28th against the pass last season.

Now there are fines for hitting too hard in a contact sport.

They should fine Kolb for throwing an off balance lob pass to his man on a crossing route. That in and of itself is a death penalty.

I understand the concern for a players health, but this is going too far.
“Ray Anderson, the league’s vice president of football operations, is looking into ejecting and suspending players who make helmet-to-helmet hits in the future.”
First of all, this was not helmet to helmet. Second of all, if a player is trying to hurt someone else, do you think he would also suffer a concussion? This game will be so tame that it will not be fun to watch anymore. Go Danta for trying to stick your head on the ball and jar it loose….it is what I teach my 8 year old!

It was not an illegal effing hit.

What the heck are these guys watching? That hit was as clean as a hit can be. It’s too bad that Jackson only weighs 170 lbs, making it look worse than it was, but the hit was totally clean, totally legal, should not have been called a penalty and should not be fined.

This is hot garbage by the NFL and the refs in that game. The Falcons had finally gotten some momentum in the game, then made a great defensive play only to have it stolen by the refs. Garbage, total garbage.

50,000 dollars is a bit excessive, the call was hitting a defense-less player but clearly Desean Jackson had the ball in his grasp and Dunta jarred it loose with the hit. Its a shame that both guys got hurt but its a bigger shame that people like Mike Peirera or whatever his name is tried to call it a dirty cheap shot. Try running full speed at another guy running full speed and try positioning your body in less that a second and see what happens.

This is absolutely PC and ludicrous. I’m sure Dunta said to himself while he was running to this play that I’m going to intentionally put this guy out of the game, and oh by the way injure myself too. I agree with penalties and any other corporal reaction to dirty play, but it seems that if the line not to be crossed is whether or an opposing player is injured, or not, is a very difficult one for a defensive player to navigate. Let’s face it, there is a huge amount of public awareness right now regarding head and neck injuries in football, and the league being as publicly visible and wealthy as it is right now, considers itself a target for lawsuits, and bad PR. It amazes me how the entire over-litigation of our society can so totally permeate itself into every fabric of it. This reaction and resulting fine are totally created as a future CYA move.

When they start talking about “devastating hits,” they’re causing problems. That is entirely too subjective. Dunta Robinson did not hit DeSean Jackson helmet to helmet (despite what Sports Illustrated’s Peter King claims).

For fines like this, and especially if they start issuing suspensions, they need a clearer definition of what’s illegal. Just saying that “devastating hits” are illegal isn’t going to cut it.

That is horsecrap. That was a clean, legal football hit. It was not helmet to helmet. It was helmet to shoulderpad and then it slid up to the helmet. Also, Jackson was not defenseless. He had caught the ball and taken a step and a half before Dunta hit him. What was Dunta supposed to do just let him run by him and score. This is the start of the downfall of the NFL!!!

Fining a player for a clean hit is absurd. Nothing about that tackle had malicious intent written on it. I don’t think Ray Buchannan was fined $50,000 when he suplexed Joe Horn in the end zone when we were playing New Orleans. The NFL is becoming tough to watch now. Every game I see opposing teams hold our players with no flags flying. I watch John Abraham get tackled by the OL and nary a flag was flown. One thing I would like to see happen is these fruit cake dances in the end zone get fines and suspensions like big hits. They are dancing like little girls when they are merely doing their jobs. It makes no sense to me. I hate it. You want to dance, retire and go on Dancing with the Stars. If you want to play Football, than play. But stop penalizing playing hard and start penalizing the fruit cake dancing we see so much.

Im still open to any explanation for how Robinson was penalized for hitting a defenseless WR, when said WR HAS THE BALL?!?!?

To fix this, the NFL will now require QBs, WRs, TEs, and RBs, to wear pink tutus. Additionally, all crossing pass routes have been outlawed because they are the root of this problem. In the future the only legal pass plays will be single coverage, straight toward the goal line routes. To lessen the effect on RBs, teams will have the option of running one of 4 pass plays, or taking an automatic 2 yard rushing gain.

These crybabies are going to ruin this game. No celebrating (did you see Miles Austin?), No Fun League, dont hit my QB league, and now you cant even play defense.

Not Don Waddell…. my opinion is that a good bit of this is the thin black and white line. Mike Perria and King from SI both have an agenda to push and will ignore any facts which are contrary to their argument for slowing down the game (presumably so the 2 old geezers can keep up).
The refs are simply not to be wrong. If they called a penalty a fine must follow or they may be seen as not paying attention in the league office or as not supporting the refs on the field.
When was the last time you saw any league address the pathetic calls by officials over the past 10 years?
I can think of 3 occassions and only because they were simply to large to just ignore away
By and large the league will do anything, including fining you into poverty, to keep people from exposing the garbage officiating.
Instead they play the misdirection card by moving the ref to the other side of the ball and saying….see, we are trying to improve things.
What really was an improvement was the additional ref on the field.

I’ve never enjoyed seeing nor delivering a helmet-to-helmet tackle when I played. Players have to be in control of their emotions. We already have enough “softies” that want to see the end of football. The only thing I’m concerned about as it relates the rule being enforced is that even “inadvertent” helmet-to-helmet hits might be over magnified. So, I hope that the officials and the league office treat each hit that falls into this category uniquely.

Saw the Dunta-DeSean collision. It was a very hard hit that was legal. Even Trent Dilfer stressed that Dunta came in low. His shoulder hit Desean’s chest and his helmet initially hit DeSean’s shoulder pad.

Terrible call by Ray Anderson and the NFL. Steve Young made a great point last night, with so many young QBs in the league, you have Quarterbacks misreading defenses and putting their receivers in peril. Yet the defense is punished.

Just a terrible call by the league. Go ahead and make it flag football and get rid of pads and helmets.

Does a form tackle — HIT, WRAP and LIFT — solve this problem?

Does not solve the problem because if you lift, you then have to let the player go because if you take him to the ground once you lift him then the refs can construe that as “driving” the player into the ground which can (you guessed it) result in a penalty and a fine.

DLed, Hit-Wrap-Lift sounds great when sitting at a desk or when you’re talking about a DLineman tracking a RB coming right at him. What happens when the Hit is so violent that the body can’t get the arms to Wrap? These are NFL athletes (i.e., very fast!) running crossing routes in the secondary toward DBs who a split second ago may have been covering a different WR.

Why don’t we put the guilt on the Offense? Fine a WR for running his route directly at another DB/LB! Fine a QB for putting his WR in danger when throwing him a pass after the WR has crossed the Tackle Box (i.e., QB can’t throw from inside the Tackle Box to a WR who has passed through the Tackle Box). That would eliminate a lot of these hits and be easy for the referees to judge. If the NFL wants to fine someone, fine the player who executed his play poorly with the time to make a decision, not the player who simply reacts in a split second.

BTW, haven’t read any word from you on complementing Dunta on not using his helmet as a weapon when he probably could have (he clearly turned his head down to avoid Jackson’s helmet). Let’s be fair here. Dunta’s training allowed him to REACT in a way that avoided a far greater injury.

So the league wants to fine and suspend players for hard hits/helmet to helmet hits which are sometimes unavoidable, in the name of player safety but they want to extend the season to 18 games and put players at increased risk of injury for the sake of more revenue in a multi billion dollar industry. Now, they do not guarantee contracts and until recently have always denied a link between ALS and multiple concussions received while playing the game and as such do not as a rule take care of players who suffer life altering, debilitating diseased…

Mike

I did not even think the hit warranted a 15 yard penalty. It was a hard hit, and scary for both players. I am not sure what else Robinson should have done, maybe let Jackson complete the catch and go blazing by him. There was nothing dirty or malicious about the hit. Maybe they need to put flags on the QBs and receivers, make a rule that one flag is down, if they pull both flags it is a turnover. Or maybe they could make it a game of two hand touch, or just have the defensive players politely let the QB or receiver know that he is planning on making a tackle so they can get into a defensive position. I completely understand the league attempting to protect the players, but do not make it so you have DB’s and LB’s afraid to make a legal hit that may be questionable and could possibly constitute fines or a suspension.

The two most basic tackling rules I was taught in Pee Wee football are 1) always look at what you’re tackling — that is, keep your head up; and 2) hIt, wrap up, drive through the tackle. The first rule was taught as much for the tackler’s protection as for the runner’s/receiver’s. Hitting with your head down or with the crown of your head invites spinal injury. DOL is right. A return to the fundamentals solve this problem. Trying to make the Sportscenter highlights creates it.

Many years ago at the old stadium during a Braves game, Ed Varga made an extremely “controversial” call. I was right in the site line and started chanting “The Umpire Sux” over and over. The whole stadium picked it up. It was awesome. (I really did this, no b.s.) You can look this up in Braves history, it was so cool when I found it on the net.

The NFL should thoroughly review the videos before making decisions. I don’t believe they did in this case. Also, I believe DeSean had a previous concussion, and subsequent concussions come with less trauma that the original one, such as a hard hit to the upper chest rattles the neck and head, so that you don’t actually have to hit the head itself.

So the NFL wanted to make a statement, but the fine is out of line.

If that was an illegal helmet to helmet hit, subject to a fine of $50,000, then what was the hit put on Indy RB Joseph Addai? That hit was shoulder pad to helmet and looked a heck of a lot more devastating result wise and was balls out intentional on the defenders part that hit him. Robinson didn’t even get near Jacksons head with his initial impact. What’s next ???? fining a defender for not helping an opposing player up after he hits the ground? Oh my…the brutality of it!!!!!

Well you know, I used to watch a lot of NASCAR – then came the restrictor plate and I haven’t seen a race in years – and ratings are plummeting. Likewise – if sissies and librarians take over the NFL, I’m out. They are playing with fire here. Robinson’s hit was perfectly legal. Harrison’s hits were legal. Only Merriweather’s was flagrant head-to-head. They take away the DB’s ability to play his position to artificially jack up the scores, now they take away his remaining weapon – hell just get rid of DBs!

Some plays are worthy of a fine or suspension such as Merriman’s head hit for the Patriots and Harrison’s for the Steelers from last Sunday. However, Robninson hit Jackson in the sternum with his shoulder. What is he supposed to do ? Step out of his way ? Hit in the legs to cause to fip over on top of his head ?

This is football people ! Ray Anderson is a tool !

This is for all of you who think harrison’s hits were legal which even nfl spokespeople don’t even know. You can not use your helmet to spear any player, including running backs. Posted from ESPN’s TMQ by Gregg Easterbrook, “Existing rule 12, 2, 7g bans “using any part of a player’s helmet (including the top/crown and forehead/hairline parts) or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily,” and also states, “violent or unnecessary use of the helmet is impermissible against any opponent.” Any opponent, including the ballcarrier. So it’s not legal to ram your helmet into the ballcarrier’s helmet. But many in the football world think it is — a reason the rules must become clearer. And attitudes must change. If it really were “perfectly clean” to deliver deliberate blows to a ballcarrier’s head, then no one should play football.”

D.O. Ledbetter – anyone that has played the game of football understands that “form” tackling (Hit, wrap, lift) is generally not possible with a moving target. If Robinson had stopped, broken down and tried to “form” tackle as you suggest, Jackson catches the ball and either barrels over a stationary Robinson or jukes his way past a stationary Robinson. Pay attention during any game and you’ll see the majority of tackles are not the “hit, wrap, lift” type of tackle you are referencing because these are moving targets and the defenders generally have to tackle from a non stationary off-balance position.

Just my two cents: once they started playing the hit over and over in slow motion, it appeared to me that Dunta found himself closing at a higher rate of speed than he expected and instinctively pulled his head in and down anticipating the impact and trying to avoid a collision with Owens (the trailing back). He did not lead with his head and, in fact was pulling his head away in instinctive self-preservation. Any head contact to any part of Jackson’s body was incidental to the high-speed collision.

The hit occurred because Kolb threw into that crossing route very late and very weakly, forcing his receiver to change direction, speed, and exposing him to a fast-closing defender.

The referee reacted to the violence of the collision, not to an observed rule violation. By virtue of the violence of the collision, Dunta got wrapped up in the alarm raised by the head-hunting techniques displayed by other defensive backs in the NFL on Sunday.

Even if Dunta flew into that tackle repeating “hit-wrap-lift” repeatedly, his closing speed, coupled with the adjustments made by Jackson to catch the pass, would’ve resulted in a violent collision with either Jackson, Owens, or both.

The NFL has had ample time to view the hit and know this wasn’t spearing, launching into a defenseless receiver, or leading with the head. Since there were occurrences of all the above by other defenders on Sunday, they are using Dunta’s collision in an effort to place an exclamation point on their “excessive violence” statement.

The NFL and Sports media(in general) are total hypocrites on this issue. The NFL had to order itself to stop selling photos of “big hits” after getting caught profiting from those same “big hits” that they currently decry. As for the press, check out the NFL pages on ESPN and SI–the first picture that pops up on SI.com today is of the hit on Massaquoi—reason? Fans love “big hits”! The league is still trying to have it both ways and it won’t wash…..

“Yet his fine suggests the NFL is only serious about sanctioning players who cause injury, not ones who do so with vicious, reckless intent. If Jackson had popped up right after that hit, would Robinson still owe 50K today? I doubt it.
Decisions to fine and suspend can’t be made because of a hit’s end result. Goodell will insist that they’re not doing that, but the Robinson fine proves otherwise. This is a slippery slope for the league to pursue.”

A lot of folks, including Dunta are saying that Robinsons hit was clean. Some of those same folks said the same things about Jack Tatums hit on Darryl Stingley years ago that left Stingley paralyzed for life. When I saw Duntas hit on Jackson sunday, I just cringed because I knew Jackson was hurt. When Jackson walked off the field I knew Jackson was finished for the day. I also knew that Robinson would get fined because it looked to me like a vicious hit. Of course, Dunta feels his hit was clean, but next time Dunta will either pull up lame before he crushes a defenseless player and rolls him over or Duntas pocketbook will continue to get emptied out until Dunta gets suspended. Darryl Stingleys life was never the same after Tatums vicious hit and I wish these NFL players could learn a lesson from the savage hits made to defenseless players.

ShempHoward

Charlie: I agree with you completely. There are misguided souls out there who think Duntas hit was clean on Jackson. Furthermore they have the audacity to want Falcons owner Arthur Blank to pay Duntas fine. Dunta needs to learn the fundamentals of tackling before he uses his head as a projectile missile. DUNTA needs to slam on the brakes before spearing a defenseless player and think ‘DONTA’ or there will continue to be a ‘DENTA’ in his wallet.

ShempHoward

For all of the BLIND BATS out there who think that Duntas hit was clean: I heard a program on talk show radio the other day where they said its good the NFL is trying to eradicate the savage hits that are being perpetrated by players who are “WILLFULLY TRYING TO HURT AND INJURE DEFENSELESS PLAYERS”. The guy hosting the show (who I will let remain nameless) went on to say that if the NFL doesnt clean up the senseless savage hits soon, somebody is going to end up getting killed on the football field. I thought when Dunta projected his “SAVAGE” spearing hit on DaShawn Jackson, I thought there was a possibility that Jackson was going to perish right there on the field. If that had happened, would criminal murder charges have been brought against Dunta Robinson for recklessly, senselessly killing an opposing player? These senseless hits need to be stopped before someone gets critically hurt, paralyzed for life or winds up dead. Good for the NFL for taking immediately action and trying to take some damage control on the situation.

Dwayne

D-Led, watch a DB break down to make a tackle while the WR is at full speed, and I’ll show you a DB standing in the middle of the field holding his jock. These WR’s can change direction in less time than it takes a BD to break down for a stop, drop and roll tackle, or a hit wrap and lift tackle. I know that is simplifing it a bit, but I do not have the answers my self.

Dwayne

defensless player…is a running back defensless when someone’s got him by the leg and 3 or 4 players are trying to knock the Sheeet out of him? If a DB gets an interseption, the WR’s can not make a tackle. DB’s are not used to carrying the ball and do not know how to protect themselves while doing so.

Dunta Robinson was CORRECTLY fined for his “SAVAGE” hit on DeShawn Jackson. Dunta should have pulled up, slammed on the brakes and drove Jackson into the turf, using correct technique by driving him into his sternum. Instead, Dunta hit above the waist and slammed itno Jackson’S chest “HEAD FIRST” using his helmet as a weapon to savagely and visiously driving Jackson into the ground with the impact of tanker truck or tractor trailer. Dunta walked away sticking out his chest as if he had done something great. Meanwhile, while I cringed watching the television, I though Jackson was out cold and there was a possibility that Jackson was going to be carted out on a stretcher or not have a pulse entirely. Its sad to watch players who play so recklessly and carelessly that they simply DON’T CARE WHAT HAPPENS TO THE PLAYER THAT THEY ARE SAVAGELY BEATING INTO THE TURF.

Michael Vick was crushed into a “VICK SANDWICH” by D’Angelo Hall and another defender for the 49ers. Vick has since #1:lost his starting job at quarterback and #2:is still suffering from bruised and cracked ribs. Vick can thank his old pal D-Hall for losing his job AND helping to crack his ribs and possibly ruin his career. Of course, D-Hall has no regard for human life.
