FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons have gone ahead and made the switch at strong safety, at least according to the depth chart they released for the Philadelphia game.

William Moore is listed as the starter at strong safety and Erik Coleman, who’s coming back from a knee jury as the backup.

Moore, the 2009 second round pick out of Missouri, took over for Coleman after he was hurt in the Pittsburgh game.

Coach Mike Smith has repeatedly said that he doesn’t have a rule about a player not losing his starting spot because of injury.

Coleman has been available the last two games. He didn’t play against San Francisco, but saw some action against Cleveland. On the

pre-game flip card for the Cleveland game, Coleman was still listed as the starter.

Moore missed most of his rookie season with a hamstring injury. Since busting into the starting lineup, he has 26 tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

Also, wide receiver Harry Douglas was listed as the starter on the pre-game card for the last two games. But with Michael Jenkins coming back this week, Jenkins was listed as the starter on the depth chart for this week’s game against Philadelphia.

It will be nice to see if Jenkins can make any kind of a difference.

It’s nice to have enough depth to have real competition for jobs. Jenkins return should help some but the OL still has me worried. Anybody know if Valdez is making enough progress to have a shot if someone goes down?

Good to hear. D Led I told you he would push Coleman. You were right about it being hard to unseat him b/c Coleman is really solid but Moore has a lot of potential and they know it. If he can be consistent like this all year, TD may have made yet another good pick. Then we’d be just waiting on Jerry and Baker to come around….(I dont think Baker will ever be a true LT in this league but Jerry can still be impactful after his knee fully heals.)

I hope Coleman can get some plays at FS. We still need him to be a contributor to the team because of his game knowledge and leadership ability

Jenkins will floop. Falcons had a chance at TO and Moss and past on both. Yeah, this team is 4 n 1 but only be cuz they got lucky.

Anoter thig that is bothering me is Mat Ryan is getting worst each year. At this rate, he will be worst then Dough Johnson in a year! LOL

I wonder if there is a likelihood for the Falcons to move Coleman and possibly a mid round draft pick for a big play WR. Someone like Mike Sims-Walker or Vincent Jackson.

One thing that is bothering me is Joe Tess’ 7 spelling/grammatical errors and lack of sentence structure. Matt Ryan isn’t a “Peyton Manning” type QB, but he is a top tier QB. The Falcons would be at the bottom of the division without him.

By the way, you mentioned that Jenkins will floop. You may not be aware but that is the action decribed when the ballsack hits the forehead meaning obviously that you think Jenkins has a rather large pair.

So how do you think the who dat parrish team will do? They are favored by 5 but I think the Bucs take this one, aints are coming unraveled…………!!

Jerry still needs time and reps to become who we thought he could be…as for Baker, there’s a reason men with a certain body type excel as LT’s in the NFL and Baker can’t help it but he doesn’t fit the ideal model. I think he’s smart enough and works hard enough and his technique is solid enough but will continue to get beaten by these hybrid DE/OLB guys that these 3/4s employ. I’m really curious how Baker would look at RT if Clabo isn’t resigned/traded. We have “franchise” type players at most of our skill positions but not at LT(yet) and I believe Baker can continue to improve–he just can’t grow anymore…..

Easy decision to make and a great decision to make to start Moore, more (lol). Nothing against Coleman, because he is an outstanding safety on the run. But Moore is more versatile, offering closing speed and packing power.

I’m still concern with DeCoud poor angles on passing downs. And Dunta’s need to make adjustments in man coverage on third&long and third&short. Both players are outstanding players, but need to make the self-scouting acknowledgement and adjust appropriately. Especially this week against Philly’s speedy receivers.

If Jenkins is pain-free with Tony and Roddy dynamic one two receiving punch, I expect to see Falcons score near 30pts against Philly.

Moore definitely needs to remain the starter if he can stay healthy. Big upgrade over Coleman IMO. Much more speed and likes to hit. Coleman and even Decoud are too soft. Glad to see Jenkins back, he’s a big target. Go Falcons!!!

My question is, that with Jenkins back…will we get more vertical? We have thrown deep to Gonzo and last week that beauty to White. Then White again on the final drive against the 49ers. It has been succesful, therefore…lets do it more often. Let’s stretch the defense. We would have ended overtime against the Saints with an open Harry Douglas but Mat overthrew a few inches. We are throwing too much underneath stuff. Also we need to go to the endzone at least once when we get to the 30. We are bunching things up in the red zone too much.

The Falcons finally have some quality depth in the secondary, especially at safety with Moore, Decoud, and Coleman. I also believe that you could work Brian Williams in as FS in a pinch. We look pretty good at corner as well. The defensive line is deep as well. Everybody on our defensive line can play. No dead weight anywhere. We also have four NFL starting caliber LBs. With Adkins and James waiting in the wings. Hats off to Thomas Dimitroff and staff for re-tooling this defense. Keep adding through the draft. This is shaping up to be a championship caliber defense.

DOL and friends,

Makes sense to me. When was the last time you saw Coleman jump a route for an INT or recover a fumble…or sack the QB, or make a play moving forward. Smitty and crew were just waiting for Moore to get healthy. Moore has to find that throttle…so he can stay around. Other impressions:

(1) Ok, so the Burner played MUCH better last week. Take a look at his FIRST run from scrimmage and you can tell that someone told him to hit the hole this week. He was actually much better…still side-stepped a little, but all in all I thought he showed up against a (supposedly) rugged Browns defense

(2) Hillis is the TRUTH. Did you see that catch??? Dude is a stud, and the Birds SHUT HIM DOWN. Lofton had his hands full and he certainly responded. I actually saw #54 make plays against the pass. We were solid all around on Defense.

(3) #71 the BEER-MAN made a freakish play on the ball. I mean really…have you seen a Falcons make a play like that since…PRIMETIME #21??? Imagine that PRIMETIME and BEERMAN in the same breath. Never woulda thunk it…

(4) Play calling also improved. Second down play action passes were there…no irrational sweeps. Long ball on the post to Roddy. There was progress…

(5) Ryan was a bit shaky in the first half. I like his ball protection, but I think he can be a little slow to pull the trigger on some passes. Whatever the case…as long as he does NOT throw pics, I’m cool.

(6) Owens #21 gotta str8en up on the nickel coverage. With help down the field, what he needs to focus on is crossing routes i.e., not letting the receiver cross his face. Smitty has to coach him up for this Sunday…Eagles saw this and will create the match-up with him.

Big game this week. Eagles are beatable at their house…but they have a helluva coach in Andy Reid. Look for them to do what the Niner did: spread the Birds out and test our LBs underneath and our Nickel back across the field. Once we start inching up…#10 will look to go LONG!!! DeCoud has to stay back and #21 and #53 and #54/#56 have to play. Matchups, matchups, matchups…

FBD — Always great to have you stop by. Nice game review, too. I don’t think the play action fakes are crisp enough. They don’t fool anybody or hold the LBs you know. When I first started covering the NFL in Cincy, Boomer Esiason was QB. He would fool you 2 to 3 times a game with his play action fakes. Holmgren and Mariucci taught this to B. Favre in GB, too. He was a magician with the ball. On Roddy’s TD, Ryan did play action fake to Snelling, but it didn’t fool me. I think I’ll have a talk with Bill Musgrave about the play-action game.

Hey Y’all:

What I have seen of Moore so far this season, like Weatherspoon, he likes to TALK, HIT, and BACK IT UP!! The guy plays with a lot of enthusiasm and POWER for a defensive back. In my opinion, the guy is going to be the next Ronnie Lott. He is bigger than Lonnie and faster. So you know with his football intelligence and athletisim, he is going to be HURTING a lot of wide recieves, tight ends, and running backs. Having this type of talent on the team shows the depth the Falcons are building with each draft. THIS TEAM IS YOUNGER AND STRONGER THAN ANY TEAM IN THE LEAUGE. Messhed together with the VETS and the GREAT COACHES we have, we have a MONSTER on our hand here in Atlanta. Therefore, fans, sit back and enjoy real football in our great city of ATLANTA. @John (aka; obvious vick and/or eagles fan)
cejay….Vick is ranked ahead of Ryan in QB ratings. Take your emotions out of the equasion and think logically by using the numbers. Your points have no validity because they are based on “your” feelings, not actual stats. Why does Vegas pick Philly to win if Vick plays? Maybe they know more than you…
——————————————————-
Did I say anything Ryan ?? No I did not, nor did I compare him to Vick. Secondly what you’re calling “emotions” and “feeling” is actually my opinion, and requires no “stats” or “numbers” and is based solely on my professional or unprofessional assement, it’s an o-p-i-n-i-o-n. Need we get into your silly Vegas statement? That’s just a guess on who’ll win BASED on “stats” and “numbers”, among other things, and is not a gaurantee, thats why its called Gambling….thats great logic! listen to everything vegas says, they’ve never been wrong.

D-led, They should get Chandler 98 from SB team to come in and give him some schooling on the Play action. He was great. He also taught MV7. Although Matties rookie season he was pretty affective at it. It is something he should really work on.

Jerry doesn’t have top DL line strength. Check out his combine, which isn’t much better than Jamal’s. It’s no wonder they get pushed around.

DOL I agree with your thoughts about the play action fakes being weakly executed. I also don’t like the telegraphed handoffs, with the ball and our intentions on full display for the entire defense. Ball handling is an undervalued skill that can be taught. Despite his other failings, there was no one better at it than Chris Chandler, who learned it from his father-in-law John Brodie.

Sid (& you too Falcan’t Jim): You know that I don’t like you, and you don’t like me. I can live with that, we’re enemies as far as football goes. However, even amongst enemies, there is a level of respect. I don’t post as anyone other than me. I don’t use any other username other than SeenThisB4. I can’t speak for other people around here who post using my name or a derivation of it. But, if it doesn’t say SeenThisB4, then I guarantee, it’s not me. If it does say, SeenThisB4, it’s probably a 50/50 chance it isn’t me.

Now, that being said:

Sid: It’s too bad you weren’t one of the 33 souls at the bottom of that Chilean mine, cause if you’d had been there, I guarantee, I would have brought up only 32 and then sealed it shut with some of that heavy mud they used at the BP well in the gulf.

Joe Tess——-I answered you yesterday with a sound argument. Go back and look. I outlined why TO is a pariah and not deserving to be on this Atlanta team! So, today you come back with a more moronic statement about Matt Ryan!?!?!? This cannot be true.
Ryan has been very effective in leading this team. Yes, he had an issue against Pittsburgh and for the first half against the 49ers but, those aside, Ryan has been very good. He will always throw picks he shouldn’t but he will also make plays that very few others could. Just go back and watch the passes he hit Roddy with against the Saints and Niners, when the Falcons needed it in the fourth quarter. No, Matt Ryan is our franchise quarterback and a damn good one!!!!!
Seen—–I don’t mind you posting on here, as long as it’s about football, but your latest responses have been inflammatory and insulting. No, they have not been directed at me but wishing someone death is over the line!!!! Clean it up!!!! Oh and how about them Saints? LOL!!!!!!

Jenkins will DEFINATELY help our vertical passing game. It will mark the first time that Jenkins, Roddy, HD, & Gonzalez will ALL be on the field together. Also, Jenkins is an EXCELLENT downfield blocker and great at ceiling the edges. This WILL allow Turner AND Snelling to get off more explosive runs. Throw in an occassional catch or two, and this offense can be DEADLY!

I think it is great that Moore has been moved to the starting spot on the depth chart. It really shows our depth as well as a versatility we have not had in the secondary for a while. I am very excited about Jenkins finally getting in the game. I have been a big fan of Jenks for a while. I was sometimes the only one who thought he was a decent receiver on this blog. I have really enjoyed him not being on the field, because so many of you guys who were bashing him earlier during OTA’s and training camp, really have had a chance to see what he truly brings to the team. His size, strength, and speed has to be respected. As for Dunta, as I have said before, he is still trying to learn what the Falcons want from him. While he was in Houston he worked in press coverage most of the time and that is where his strength lies. He has been getting better in the soft coverages he is being asked to do, but I think, the coaches should sometimes rely on his skill as a pressure corner to work for them against some of the WR’s in the league.

Last week I was making fun of a falcan’t fan who was heralding the power rankings at SI, by quoting the power rankings of ESPN which had the World Champion Saints and cellar dwelling falcan’ts in the 2 and 5 spots respectively reversed. If you couldn’t figure out that that was what I was doing, then you need to go get some remedial training in reading comprehension.

I agree about needing better execution of play-action but unless Chandler has changed, he never struck me as the kind of guy to help anyone out. We’ll see if Jenks improves the passing game. Jury is out with me. He always drops too many thrown his way. I hope we face Kolb rather than Vick but I won’t forget last year when Andy Reid showed what an as*hat he is with letting Vick run it up on us. I hope we haven’t forgotten it either. Go Birds.

I just don’t get the bickering and jousting between Saints fans and Birds fans on this blog. They got a ring and we don’t. Sheesh. Let’s accept it, get over it. Move along.

Now to the point at hand, William Moore has earned the starter’s job. Looks like a potential top player someday. He’s taken advantage of the opportunity that came his way and perhaps the time has come to say he may in fact be better than Coleman. What’s been surprising to me is his speed – he certainly seems faster then Coleman. That safety blitz against SF was a “wow” moment.

But the season’s still young. Things can change in a microsecond. Philly’s a very good test for us.

Jenkins will only stretch the field 5-10 yds further than it already is. He may run a better deep crossing route than Roddy, if you ask me. I hope the schemes will now call for more of that. His long strong arms give him separation and his strides are deceptively fast. All he’s ever lacked was heart – which is everything in the NFL. But he will definitely help us.

WILLIAM MOORE IS STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE! ITS GOOD TO SEE HIS SKILLS AFTER AN INJURY PLAGUED YEAR LAST YEAR. HE BRINGS PHYSICALITY TO THE SECONDARY. WITH JENKINS BACK, WE CAN MOVE DOUGLAS BACK TO SLOT AND BE THE POTENT OFFENSE THAT WE ALL THOUGHT WE HAD WHEN HEALTHY! NOW, LETS BEAT PHILLY ON THE ROAD FOR THE 1ST TIME SINCE 1980! DAMN!! SOME STREAKS MUST END!

It will be great to have WR MJenkins back. He’s a much better down field blocker and possession receiver than HDouglas. And HDouglas, as a slot receiver, is much quicker, faster, and a far better long ball threat that MJenkins. His return really balances out our passing OFF, which will make the Eagles think twice about being so blitz happy, and leaving their DB’s in man coverage against a combination of RWhite, MJenkins, TGonzalez and/or HDouglas.

We lost the last 2gms against the Eagles partly due to poor special teams play. If we can solidify our special teams play this wk, and get the solid OFF and DEF production we’ve gotten recently, we’ll kick their butts. I want to see and hear those famous Philly fans booing their team as they walk off the field after the final gun goes off.

I wouldn’t recommend they play MVick, who would normally give them their best chance of winning. He’s already hurt, and the way the Falcon’s DEF has been sending players to the sidelines this season, I don’t believe he’d last too long. Bottom line, they might as well start the QB they hand picked to replace DMcNabb, because he’ll end up relieving MVick anyway if he starts.
