FLOWERY BRANCH –  The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) test  revealed that rookie linebacker Sean Weatherspoon suffered a sprained right knee against the Cleveland Browns, Falcons coach Mike Smith said on Wednesday.

He didn’t practice with the team on Wednesday.

“We are going to hold him out definitely tomorrow and then we’ll look at what happens on Friday and Saturday and make a determination,” Smith said.

Weatherspoon, the team’s first round pick in the 2010 draft out of Missouri, has started four games at strongside linebacker.  He is third on the team with 32 tackles.

Weatherspoon suffered an ankle injury against New Orleans on Sept. 26. He missed the San Francisco game and returned against Cleveland before getting injured in the third quarter.

Stephen Nicholas, who started at the position in 2009, started for Weatherspoon against San Francisco and took his spot against Cleveland.

Nicholas led the team in tackles against San Francisco with 13. He also had a fourth quarter interception against Cleveland.

Middle linebacker Curtis Lofton (knee), tight end Justin Peelle (groin) and defensive end John Abraham (stiff back) were limited in practice.

Sure hope that Spoon can return soon, if not this week. He is definitely making an impact on the defense as a rookie. Nicholas is a strong replacement and should be able to handle it against the Eagles. GO FALCONS!!!!

Though Nichols isn’t listed as the starter he is capable of starting for us or another team. We are starting to build depth at every position.

Thank GOD we haven’t had any of the injury bug comments about spoon. I would hate to see people jump off the Norwodd bandwagon on that..Jenks Norwood and Nichols are starters for any team in the NFL everyone should understand that.

I say rest him. I think we can win this game without him. I would rather have him 100% at the end of the season rather than staying banged up all year. They will probably rest him like they did Jenks and Spoon for the SF game.

IF Spoon were declared out for the season (and I’m happy that that isn’t the case) would the headline have been ‘Stick a Fork in the Spoon’?

Hopefully the Falcons can run up a 21 point lead on the Eagles early, and then grind the eagle’s defense down, and not use their own defense too much.

Yeah Joe Fishhead House, the Falcons should have hired TO to play the strongside linebacker position, and just gave that draft choice to Buffalo.

Rest Spoon unless he’s 100%. Nicholas is a more than capable replacement. Falcons were able to shut down the Browns’ running game without Spoon and that will be the main job against the Eagles offense too. Besides, I’m going to Philly to see the game live, and the Falcons are 3-0 in games I attend in person – so this ‘W’ is in the bag.

Peria Jerry is still coming off of that injury and he’s been solid.

Spoon has been frigging spectacular this year. It’s refreshing to have an OLB of his quality especially in coverage.

Spoon has been better than we could have hoped to date. I hope the swelling goes down on his knee soon.. but yeah, got to think long term this season.

Spoon is singing the rookie blues. Even the best college doesn’t prepare the body for the beating of the pro game. Imagine this guy next year when the Falcs have a chance to build him!

Hang in there Sean… you are bound for the Cheerios box!

Better to save him for next week or he could get an old fashioned Eagle whoopn’ like we’re going to put on Matty Sunday. Such a cute name for someone who’s going to be punished beyond recognition for 3 hours!

Weatherspoon has been a great addition to the defense and to the team. What a great draft pick. If he is dinged up, let him rest and come back strong.

Meanwhile Stephen Nicholas is a damn fine “back-up” (was the starter last year.) He has made some plays and some big hits this year too. Nicholas is young, a 3rd year player, and he’s ready to shine. Let him get some playing time while the stud rookie Weatherspoon heals.

So just how deep is the defense? Kroy Biermann was substituting for #55 when he made the highlight reel against the Browns.

And the guy “demoted” in favor of Wm Moore can start at either safety position.

Think about it – Brian Williams coming off the bench are you kidding me?

Sid- you are right about your D not being on the field that much. It will be like last years butt whoopin’ where we scored every 3rd play and then your slow O will try to grind it out. I can’t believe Matty isn’t faking another turf toe so he doesn’t have to play us. he knew what was coming last year and now we get to finish his career in our house . He’ll come home with that 1 eyed dear in the headlight look!

Yep, from the Falcons O. It’s true what I’ve read about how the Falcons and their fans are always playing the excuse card. I’ve not seen that to much except for you guys. If you get beat ,your team gets beat. Who they field is who they field-no excuses. Bad thing for you is we’ll stomp you again with Kolb or Vick and Matty is gonna pay the price for last years cowardice.

FrontRow

Kolb is a cream puff that will fold at the blink of an eye. You already learned about Vick – at his best he is an injury waiting to happen. You haven’t experieced the Vick ball security features yet.

And you’re talking about the fans that booed Santa because they didn’t get what they wanted for Christmas. When the Iggles are home for the playoffs you can bet your sweet a$$ the entire city will be blaming the season on trading McNabb (built in excuse already being played).
