Is William Moore taking over at strong safety?

Strong safety William Moore retained the starting job even though Erik Coleman was active for the game.

Moore turned in a couple of key plays, one an interception in the third quarter to stop a promising San Francisco drive.

“It was just a great call and scheme that we had,” Moore said. “Overall, we were just baiting the quarterback.”

In the fourth quarter, he came on a delayed blitz, got a sack and forced quarterback Alex Smith into an intentional grounding penalty.

“I was just getting an opportunity to play a little faster and I’m trying to show them what I can do,” said Moore, who finished with four tackles.

The Falcons held San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith to a 65.6 quarterback rating.

“The effort of the team was outstanding. We fought on each side of the ball, offense, defense and special teams,” Moore said. “We are going to make mistakes, but we have to overcome those.”

Coleman suffered a strained medial collateral ligament in the season opener against Pittsburgh and has missed the last two games.

“It’s a great situation, but it’s a tough circumstance,” Moore said. “You don’t want anybody to go down. I feel like that’s what you’re supposed to do in the NFL; step in when your number is called. I’m gaining trust from the coaches and support from my teammates.”

Entering the 2010 season, Coleman had started 31 of 32 games with the Falcons. In 2008, he started at free safety. Last season, he was moved over to strong safety.

In 2008, Coleman had a career-high 127 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles.

Last season, Coleman broke his career-high with 139 tackles.

He started his career with the New York Jets after being selected in the fifth round of the 2004 draft. He was signed by the Falcons as a free agent on March 1, 2008.

Moore was the team’s second round pick in the 2009 draft. He missed most of last season with hamstring and knee injuries. He later battled a groin injury over the offseason.

“I used last year as motivation to stay on the field and show what I can do,” Moore said.

Coleman was brought in as a FS – Lawyer Milloy was the SS that year. Falcons drafted Moore to start at SS and when he went down, moved Coleman to SS and DeCoud took over the FS spot.

With Moore now starting, Erik may get a shot at his old position. He plays better at FS.

Moore is still young, but he seems to be a quick study. I think he has two interceptions and at least one sack. I can see why Eric can’t get his job back, this guy Moore is productive.

Moore has been looking better each week and seems to be getting comfortable in this defense. He only will get better over the season. I believe the coaching staff will give him more freedom as he gains their confidence. Now, if only Decoud can go back to the level he was playing last year.

B4 We WANT to see the Chuck & Duck offense flinging it around. Brees 2 biggest games were losses.

Especially like to see the Aints pick on Grimes. Oh yeah maybe Brees learned his lesson last week.

SeenThisB4 ,

Um….you mean that big ol’ mean offense that scored all of one touchdown against the hapless Carolina kitty cats? You’d be 2-2 if you hadn’t hired a kicker from the stone age to do your scoring for you.

And it’s kinda hard when you have no running game. Ol’ Breesy has to get all the yardage by himself. Y’all can’t get shawty some help?

Decoud better watch it. Start making plays or it will be Coleman and Moore out there, and Decoud will be special teams…

I agree with you that DeCoud needs to pick it up but noway he’ll lose his job this early. But like you i’m loving the play of W.Moore and i’m so glad they didn’t give up on him before we (the fans) got a chance to see what they saw when they drafted him. I hate it for Mr Coleman but i don’t see them sitting Moore back down now. And B4 what you smoking that’s some goooood shi# lol

Its Decoud not Coleman.. He’s a horrible safety. The big run in Pittsburgh. The big run by Arizona. The big pass in NO. He’s been out of position on all those plays.. He’s like MeAngelo Falls. Thats the only weakness I see on the D. Robinson is showing up and Grimes is Lights out.. Grimes has the most heart Ive seen in a while. If we had a better safety we might be feared in the league as a great D..

Big Ray: And your team would be 2-2 too if the game was 3 seconds shorter. But you’re right, too bad we didn’t have that kicker from the stone age for the game against your sorry team. The falcan’ts are pretenders man, you know it, I know it, D-Led knows it, and the falcan’ts know it.

I kept hearing how William Moore is a stud, just wait and see. Well, now that he is playing I get it. That guy seems to be everywhere. Another great pick by Dimitroff, along with his patient long-term planning. It is working. It is all working. We have holes, but every year they are fewer and farther between, and they are filled with fast young, hungry team players.

Geez, I don’t know how many more of these games I can take. Next week I’m bringing a defibulator with me.

Seen… Man, get a life. I know you’re addicted to this anonymous persona you’ve created after years of getting your butt kicked in school. But camping out on another team’s blogs months before you even play them again is just lame. Don’t you have any friends in Slidell? Don’t you have a job? Since your so obsessed with the Falcons, why don’t you come into town for the next game? Seriously, we could all hang out together in the Gulch. You know… face to face.

Waynester/Falcon Jim: What’s up. I see both our teams pulled victory from the jaws of defeat yesterday. We both could easily be 2-2 right now, instead, both are 3-1. Actually, I like it like that, some competition is good. BUT, that doesn’t mean that I am by any stretch of the imagination even inclined to pull for the filthy fowl of ATL. Absolutely not. Just as I am aware that neither would you be pulling for the current Super Bowl Champions, that wouldn’t be right.

However, just to be clear, the Saints dominated their 0-4 opponent in every category, except turnovers. Can your team say they dominated their 0-4 opponent in every category? Except for final score, the answer is NEAUX!

Big Ray, why are we trashing Decoud after 4 games? He was a stud for us in the secondary last year. Then, Falconfan goes after DRob? Lazy, soft? Seriously? All DRob has done is help us to the 6th rated scoring defense in the league. WillyMo’s play has been great for us. I look forward to his progression and Decoud’s growth (this is only his second year starting).

Right on DC it’s way too early for that. And by the way I like Mo Pete but Nick should be starting, and bring on Mo Pete in 3 4D fence some pass rush situation. B4 i’m sorry but the aints are not as good as you think they are and that’s not just because of the injuries. Last year your team as they should have, took advantage of their soft schedule. I can just see your little brain turning now thinking that’s the situation that we are in now, but you’d be wrong. Here is why comparing each teams prior schedule ours being 9-7 and i do believe was 7-9 lets concede the birds has the strongest of the two.

Here’s a thought to consider for a resolution to Sean ‘Spoon’s absence. Play a 4-2-5 defense, with a three-headed monster at safety (Will Mo, DeCoud and Erik Coleman)?

Cejay: Listen up birdbrain, the Saints are going to win the NFC South Division out right, and I’ll post my muncherie where I please!

Your team should have lost yesterday, and deserved to lose, you know it, and they know it, they got a gift from the 49ers yesterday, and a gift from the Saints last week, and any falcan’t fan who doesn’t acknowledge that is as blind as you.

Charles, I am not using the Saints’s injuries as an excuse. The Saints dominated Carolina, but gave them gifts to keep the game close. The 49ers dominated your team but gave your team gifts to keep them close enough to give the falcan’t the opportunity to win, which they did. Some would call that “luck”. And just like most of your falcan’t fans discounted the Saints wins last year to luck, I discount the falcan’t wins this year too, because you got lucky. The only team you have actually beaten, were the 0-4 cardinals.

STB4 I can tell you didn’t watch the Falcon game. No way, no how did the 49′ers dominate us! We played skill ball with them…and pounded them in the trench. We were just a little hungover after our victory celebration from last week. Man, as much as we tried to forget it, we just couldn’t help but savor the flavor of whippin’ the Saints in their own dome. So it took a little while to get on track for the 49′ers, but we came through and a W is a W.

Anyway, don’t you have some jocks to go sniff? I hear DB callin’ your name.

SeenThisB4 – The Cardinals have two wins. And by that, I mean they have one more win than all the teams the Saints have beaten combined. And for what it’s worth, the Niners had one good drive before the Falcons defense clamped down and shut them out for the rest of the game. You might even say that Atlanta’s defense dominated San Fransisco’s offense. But you wouldn’t know anything about that.
