FLOWERY BRANCH — The Falcons have scored a league-high 61 points in the red zone.

Not counting Ryan’s four kneeldowns at the end of the Falcons’ win over the Cardinals on Sept. 19, the Falcons have scored on 11 of their 12 red-zone drives.

They have scored seven touchdowns and four field goals.

“In the preseason, we were getting down there, and they had some stops,” running back Michael Turner said. “But we were stopping ourselves.”

The Falcons are followed in red-zone scoring by Indianapolis (58), Tennessee (56) and San Diego (53).

“The preseason helped us to get some things cleaned up a little bit,” Turner said. “We’ve had some opportunities to come up with some touchdowns. I’m glad during the regular season that we are getting it done.”

More numbers from that same article:
Ryan is #1 in the NFL in red-zone passing with a 127.9 passer rating
Ryan is #1 in goal-to-go passing QB rating 126.4
ALSO
Ryan is #4 in the league operating from the “shotgun” QB rating 108.5 (31of 49=63.3%)
Roddy White #1 receiving in the NFCSouth (targeted 40 times/ 25 receptions)
PLUS
Falcons #1 in time of possession (35.26 average)
Atlanta #1 in rushing offense through week 3
Defense(not so good) 21st total defense, 22nd passing “D”
Special Teams (not so special) 29th in punting average after being leaders in this category last 2 years
Overall, much improved!

Dare I say we have the most potent offense through week 3? If we can get our defensive and special teams rating up in the low teens, the sky is the limit.

We have 3 challenging teams over the next 6 games – Philly (away), Cincinnati (home), and Baltimore (home). If we can pull 2 out of 3 or even 1 out 3, there is no reason we couldn’t be 12-4 at the end of this thing. There is no reason we shouldn’t whoop the 49ers, Browns, Tampa, Carolina Panties, Aints, and Seattle.

We need to stay focused, healthy, hungry, and the D needs to find their identity.

Stats show that our run defense is giving up an average of 101.3 yards a game, which ranks us 12th in the league. But, take away 2 runs (the 50 yarder by Mendenhall and the 80 yarder by Hightower), and the average plummets to only 58 yards a game and our run defense jumps to 3rd in the NFL. Not too bad.

not a big enough sample size yet. They aren’t out of the first quarter.

They got manhandled by Pittsburgh. They dominated both Arizona and New Orleans. They are improved, but there is room for improvement.

This week’s game against the 49ers is a better mettle check than New Orleans. Can this year’s team remain focused after a big emotional victory? Will they take care of business on Sunday or fall victim to their own celebrations, as Falcons teams have in the past?

Good Job Waynester!! You dug up some good stats! I think our defensive numbers do not tell the whole picture. We have given up 3 or 4 blow up plays that have dragged down our defensive statistics. If your watching the game, I think you can tell that we have wholistically improved the D-Fense from last year!!

We are in for big things this year and the D-Fense is the reason!!

So long as they are behind us. Dont piss on my parade. Everytime something good is said about the Falcons someone has to add a……….but, about another team doing almost as well. We could be in first in our division all they to the playoffs and someone would have to add….but NO is in 2nd jus behind you. We could win the Superbowl and someone would have to add…….but that other team almost one too.

“Truth” i agree. The media always talks about how the “aints” lost the game ,not how the Falcons beat their arzz. Mark my work , this team will improve every week.I love our team.. Saw part of an interview Jim Mora is doing with MV7 on sunday game day on the NFL network, Mike was vey humble, I guess it’s time to forgive him and wish him well. Go Falcons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with Joe Tess Fish Smell. The Falcons played against a great defense for game 1 and took them to OT. Yes they lost but only to improve to a 34 point win for game 2. Next on to NO in their toiletbowl. A sound defeat of LAST years SB Champs. That’s how much we are improving each week.
Preseason TD’s – not so good. Week 1 TD’s – none. Now we lead in redzone points. I love our improvement.
GO FALCONS!!!!!

Under the radar is okay with me. Not that Mike Smith’s teams need to be under the radar to succeed, I think they’re a smart football team. But I enjoyed catching all of those overly exuberant Saints fans by surprise, and will feel the same way when we beat Baltimore, Green Bay, Philly, (stomp) Cincinnati, and get past New Orleans again. Being underestimated is fun!

WOW…we are? That used to be one of our WORST things. We’d get to the red zone and STALL! Let’s hope this trend continues all the way to Dallas. :)

This game is huge!!!! The Falcons have a chance to send this city into a tizzy, especially considering how UGA and Tech are (not) performing.

Come on Falcons, seize the spotlight!!!

Crush the 49ers with the Georgia Dome in delirium!!!! 49-0 Falcons!!!!

PMC “we got manhandled by Pittsburg” were you watching the same game I was? They were effective stopping the run but we were able to drive the field several times, just not get it into the endzone. At best they won a few more series than we did on their home field and we had an opportunity to go ahead but decided to tie the game instead. A mistake we have since learned from. No doubt Pittsburg has a great Defense, but ours is getting better and the steelers offense even with Big Ben is nothing special. We will continue to get better on defense baring any rash of injuries like last year

Waynester,
Great job! nice stats…..
however, while our defense is a “middle of the pack” in total defense, we only give up 15 points a game. So theres always a bright spot with this team, I love it!

I can hardly wait to see how the Birds do against some of the stronger teams on their schedule! This is one of the most well rounded teams we’ve ever had, from the owner and general manager to the coaches and the players currently on the roster! We have got a shot at the big ticket this year and for years to come! Go Falcons!

I’m not a negative Nancy, just thought I’d provide the info I picked up elsewhere. You’re correct about our Defense’s obvious improvement and as for the red-zone numbers, just outstanding–amazing compared to last season. NO and ATL are neck and neck in a number of statistical categories but it’s so early in the season that there really isn’t a large enough sample to give a truly accurate portrait of where the 2 teams stand. The most important stat is that we’re 1 and 0 vs the Saints and the NFCSouth….

Seen,

I agree this is a forum for smack and it does, AND SHOULD, get a little rough and heated at times. Good and so be it. HOWEVER, what you do by constantly and consistently just insulting Falcon Fans on their blog is tantamount to constantly sending hate letters to your neighbor. After a while, he’s gonna come over and punch you in the nose!

OUR game with the Taint’s is over. We’ve put up with your GEAUX $HIT for weeks on end.

Now be RELEVANT and be courteous. Are you a man or a mouse? You have wore out your welcome. You are yesterday’s news. You are the in-laws that have stayed past three days.

Stay in touch but be respectful and balanced. BE A MAN !

Bye………
