Former Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall, now with the Washington Redskins, gets a warm welcome from Falcons assistant head coach Emmitt Thomas as he returns to the Georgia Dome as a rival during pregame warmups. Things would get messing later. Curtis Compton, ccompton@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons plan to honor all of the former Pro Bowl players during Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers at the Georgia Dome.
The team, through a spokesman, denied a report on ProFootballTalk.com which stated that they didn’t plan to honor defensive back DeAngelo Hall, who got into a sideline tussle with the Falcons head coach Mike Smith last season.
The Falcons will give each player, more than 30, their jerseys, a helmet and a football. They plan to send the gifts to Hall, Michael Vick and Alge Crumpler, all former Pro Bowlers who play with other teams now.

Mike Vick set our franchise back atleast 5 years! I wouldn’t honor him by pissing his name in the snow! He is a dog killing (a tale tell sign of serial killers) piece of trash that had ZERO respect for life. He disgraced the Falcons countless times (flipping the fans off, the water bottle, Ron Mexico, admitting he quit trying when the Falcons weren’t gonna make the playoffs, lying to Blank) and we honor him? What a joke. He is a piece of crap thug who has never truly been sorry for anything he has done. He doesn’t deserve the gift he was given and it is truly a shame to see how his career has been meaningless.

How good could Atlanta have been had we just kept that pick and took Tomlinson? How many times has Vick been a Pro-bowler compared to LT? Who all did we lose when we took Vick, meaning other picks traded to move up to get him? We may have taken someone different than San Diego but I remember seeing a couple of years ago that the players used from that had a major influence to them being good for several years.

RomeDawg, you displayed your ignorance as soon as you asked what did the Falcons give up to get Vick. I’ll tell u, it was a swap from the Falcons picking at #5 to move up to #1. The Falcons traded Tim Dwight and a second round pick the following year to complete the deal. And just so you know, the Falcons were not interested in drafting a running back that year. The had Jamal Anderson. The names they were interested in included Justin Smith and Leonard Davis. Know your facts instead of revisionist history.
Vick’s story is about redemption. He paid his debt to society and continues to speak against dogfighting for the Humane Society. Maybe someday when u fall flat on your face u will remember the lack of humility and compassion you displayed.

Reguardless of what any of you people say, Vick changed this organization. Excluding the superbowl year in 1998, nobody thought about looking at falcons games. I remember being laughed at for being a fan of a lousy team. Vick not only changed the falcons, he changed the game. Baseball was about to take over until Vick came into the league.

theight – Credit for changing the organization goes to Arthur Blank. Vick was a unique talent and caught the public attention, but he clearly couldn’t handle the success at the time.
Vick didn’t change the game any more than the Wildcat offense. It took teams a little while to figure out how to defend against Vick’s speed, but once one team figured it out, everyone else followed and Vick wasn’t nearly as effective. A few QB’s with speed got a chance in the NFL after Vick, but none made much of an impact. Even Vick’s recent success is more a result of him learning to play as a more traditional QB. Vick didn’t change the game, he had to change to fit the game.

I am more than disappointed in you all that are so unforgiving in regards to Michael Vic. Who are u to decide who is worthy of being forgiven? Regarding his legacy, since his final admission of guilt, his efforts have appeared to be noble. What motivated him to confession? That we do not really know, we can only assume, but God says he will humble all. So he admitted to being humbled, and he has payed his debt to society. Know I know these forums are for entertainment, but the fact is God’s words and commandments are meant for recreation or entertainment. As you judge and don’t forgive, not some things, everything, in your individual past will not be forgiven. Thus as you feel comfortable holding continuing to hold the sword over his head, every we lie, every act, time we wished bad on our brother, everytime we did not LOVE OUR ENEMY, every time we were late for work, every act of fornication, all sins against us will not be forgiven, and we will be judged the same way!!, So every time a man apologiezes and we dont forgive, The sin in essence is transfered to us.

“How good could Atlanta have been had we just kept that pick and took Tomlinson?”
Vick: 1 NFC championship game, 2 playoff appearances in 4 full seasons starting for the Falcons
Tomlinson: 1 AFC championship game, 5 playoff appearances in 9 full seasons starting for the Chargers
If you go by the raw numbers, Tomlinson is more successful. If you factor in the fact that Tomlinson has played a lot more than Vick, Vick has been at least as successful at making the playoffs.
“How many times has Vick been a Pro-bowler compared to LT?”
Vick: 3 Pro Bowl appearances in 4 full seasons as Atlanta’s starter
Tomlinson: 5 Pro Bowl appearances in 9 full seasons as San Diego’s starter
Again, if you look at the raw numbers, Tomlinson is more successful. If you factor in that Tomlinson has played a lot more, Vick has been able to make the Pro Bowl at a higher rate.
“Who all did we lose when we took Vick, meaning other picks traded to move up to get him?”
The Falcons traded the 5th overall pick (Tomlinson) in the 2001 draft, the 5th pick of the 3rd round (Tay Cody), and wide receiver Tim Dwight. Tomlinson, as you know, is one of the best running backs of his era. Cody was out of the league in 3 years, and Dwight never equaled his 1999 career high stats with Atlanta anywhere else in his NFL career. So, to answer your question, not much besides Tomlinson, and certainly much less than other teams have given up to make similar trades (the Giants, for example, gave up picks used on three Pro Bowlers to trade up three spots to pick Eli Manning).
It’s easy to say in hindsight that Tomlinson wouldn’t have gotten arrested and as a result would have been a better pick, but if you are trying to argue that Tomlinson is the better player, the results — both in terms of wins and Pro Bowl appearances — disagree with you.

reddjohn68,
If you made a trip to Rome, Georgia you would find that oddly enough I donate to my time and resources to a soup kitchen every week. I own a couple of restaurants and I give back to my community, without being told I have to by a judge. And thanks for playing the race card. It has nothing to do with race and everything to do with humanity. Vick always has and always will be a THUG!!! If Vick weren’t a great athlete he’d be nothing more than a prisoner living off our taxes.
And Icenupe, the Falcons WERE looking at possible taking LT that year due to Jamal Anderson’s never ending injuries and overuse. Know YOUR facts!
Davenpoop, LT was a bright spot in the NFL for years and is still considered one of the nicest guys in the NFL. You are also leaving out the 2nd round pick that I believe they used to take another WR. And to 5 Pro Bowl appearances compared to 3 is almost double. The Chargers have been good every year since the trade while the Falcons have not, due to Vick and his “character issues”.
Bottom line, Vick is trash who doesn’t deserve ANY recognition by the Atlanta Falcons. Have you guys forgot Blank basically sued him to try to get about $20M back? Now he “honors” him? What a joke!

RomeDawg, I will tell u AGAIN – NO! The Falcons were NOT looking for a RB. If they were, why would they trade UP to get a QB when they need a RB who was the best RB in the Draft! The names the Falcons were looking at were Leonard Davis and Justin Smith as I said earlier. Chris Chandler was injury-prone (everybody knows that) and they made a move to get Vick and to sell some seats. As a season ticket holder, Vick sold out the Dome EVERY YEAR and had a 20K seat waiting list to see him. He made this organization relevant and Arthur Blank never worry about a blackout. Arthur Blank was one of Vicks supporters in his return to the league and is a class act. The unforgiveness in your heart (no matter how much u puff your chest about your community service) will be judged on you. I guess you have always been perfect and have never needed a second chance in life. I’m glad Arthur Blank has more class than you.

RomeDawg, what you seem to forget is if we would have taken LT that year, we still needed a QB, Vick is showing what he can do with receivers that catch the ball. Vick changed the game so much that Blanks fired coach Reeves right before Vick returned from his injury because he knew Vick would win games and he couldn’t fire a coach when he is winning games.
Blanks is not stupid, he made so much more money off of Vick then he could ever imagine that he did not care about 20 million, the dome was sold out years in advance, trust me if there was a way for blanks to have kept Vick on the team while he was in prison he would have…

This is good to see, I just wish all those great players could be present because their hard work made us relevant as a football during a time when we usually didn’t have too much to cheer about. With Mike Vick, I was as shocked as everyone else at what he did. But I think (even though he may disagree) what he went through served him well. He was able to take care of some personal issues and get back on the field and he is doing so well that we may just see another “all bird” NFC Championship game this year. So get off his back he’s paid his debt to society and after his efforts with the Falcons, in truth, he doesn’t owe us anything.

RomeDawg, you have some personal issues. Why dont you let God be the judge of Vick. He served 21 months in jail, dont you think he had some time to reflect?!?! He was a dogfighter, people act like he murdered someones family. Newsflash: What happens when a racehorse brakes his leg in a race? They kill it! I am not condoning the brutal fighting and then killing of dogs, but LETS KEEP IT IN PERSPECTIVE! DOGS ARE NOT PEOPLE AND HE SERVED ALMOST 2 YEARS IN PRISON FOR IT!
Anyway, GO FALCONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111

The guys being honored on Sunday are being recognized for what they achieved in one year of their NFL career, and for that alone–not the idiotic things they said and did before or after. So as far as that goes, I have no problem honoring them for an unusual achievement. That doesn’t mean that I rank any of the 3 men mentioned in the article anywhere near the top of all-time great Falcons. They simply don’t measure up. One of the things that many of the posters on here keep saying is “they became fans of this franchise because of Mr. Vick”. That’s one of the reasons that those of us who have been loyal partisans of the Falcons since the mid-60’s regret the most about the “Vick era”. While he was here (taking up tremendous cap space) he was a “me-1st” player and attracted like-minded “fans”. Fans of Mike, not of the team we love…and that’s still the case with some of you. So what if he’s found “redemption” in the eyes of many–so what if he brought “attention” to Atlanta. As a Falcon follower, I’m only concerned with what he did/failed to do for the TEAM and he’s already admitted giving less than 100% while playing here. That’s it. I hope he’s truly changed his heart but only G-d knows that. All I know is that he and DHall were selfish players while on this team and I’m glad we’re no longer tolerating that attitude from the men we hire. Go TEAM!

The comments defending MV by saying ” pit bulls kill people” defense is just silly. Was he out there dogfighting to protect humanity? No! He was doing it to gamble. That’s where I think the league went wrong with giving him a short suspension (the time in prison didn’t count toward his league punishment according to the commish). A pro athelete was involved in a gambling business, which the Black Sox and Pete Rose have shown was very detrimental to the sport. If some gang had pulled MV aside and blackmailed him to throw a game do you think he would have come clean? We’re talking about Vick 3 yrs ago, not now. I don’t think he would have.
I don’t have a problem with sending them the jerseys, etc but think they should have just honored retired players and then they’d have avoided all this.
Bartkowski, Andrews, Case (some of the biggest hits I’ve ever seen), Jamal Anderson, Crystal Chandelier (Chris Chandler), Tuggle, Kenn and Fralic top my list.

I am so tired of people losing their minds when it comes to Vick and the dog story. Righteous White folks who raped, maimed, hung, and castrated Black men and women, and who worked Black children to death children in the South, look at Georgia’s and Atlanta’s ( Leo Frank, anyone ) history. History tells me that you did and continue to do unspeakable crimes against Southern Blacks. You hung Leon Frank in Marietta. I don’t see you teaching your kids about this in your schools. Is it because the monsters who participated in this crime still reside in our midst? What about the race riot that took the lives of Black men in the city of Atlanta in the early 1900’s? Do you teach this to your children at home and in your schools? These were human beings whose only crime was having dark skin in an environment where superority reigned because one had pale skin. How sick is that? Vick did his time. Get off his case! America loves stories dealing with persons dusting themselves off and climbing back in the saddle. He is an American and he is back in the saddle. Get with the program! Your racism screams each time you kick him for doing what is applauded in White society.

Past it. Move on. Let the man live his life. He has paid his debt to society and he owes you not one d_ _ n dime. Did you send him money on his books while he was in prison? Did you write a letter of encouragement? Didn’t think so. So he owes you nothing but to love you and ask forgiveness. That he has done. Get over yourself and keep it moving. What in the wide wide world of sports is’a goin’ on here?*
Football fans arguing the merits of honoring former players has devolved into screeds on past instances of racial injustice? How does paying men millions to play sports relate to “keeping men down”? Racial hatred is a matter of historical fact but what in the world wide web does that have to do with whether or not Mr. Vick was a blessing or a curse to the Falcons’ franchise? Is chronic misbehavior and lawbreaking a “black thing” now? A cultural norm that our society must accept or an unacceptable aberration? Some posters continue to attempt to minimize the full scope of Mr. Vick’s negative impact on the TEAM by insinuating that “it was just about a few dogs–get over it”(heal thyself) when the truth is much wider and deeper. Players caught gambling on sports/financing gambling organizations are routinely banned from participating in other professional sports leagues. Why is there an exception in this case? It’s as fundamentally unfair as the treatment of minorities (bambi)or as unfair as labeling those who disagree with your views on this matter as “racists”….

Bob Lee was a awful passer…
Bob Berry was awful passer…
Doug Johnson was a awful passer…
Randy Johnson was a awful passer…
Scott Hunter was a awful passer…
June Jones was a awful passer…
but Michael Vick was a AVERAGE PASSER in Atlanta… He was not awful… Don’t believe me? Go to Pro-Football-Reference.com and type in each of those QB’s names. I think you’ll be surprised.
By the way, type in Bartkowski’s name as well.
There have only been two off-the-chart great passers in Atlanta. Jeff George and Chris Chandler. They were way too nuts in the case of George and too fragile in the case of Chandler.
Bartkowski had 3 lights out seasons, people forget the rest where he could barely stay healthy or would collapse off into “Bart Land.” Poor Chris Miller was just knocked silly, nothing could have saved him. That leave Ryan who to this point has been a above average passer. His last two games have been his best in terms of efficiency and production. Still, we have been here before, he has to put together 6 or 7 games to start shaking the label.

So why aren’t you up in arms about just Vick “supposedly” killing dogs….you were not there you don’t know if he did or even how many. I guess you also volunteer with PETA and work tirelessly to stamp out all dog fighting and dog killing. How many have you taken in. I think it is even more deplorable the number of people in Georgia that own upto 100 animals in one house. living in crap, spreading disease, i don’t hear you up in arms about that. because the media went after a HIGH PROFILE person, you jumped on the band wagon and want to crucify the man for his transgressions. What Vick did was terrible, of that, there is no doubt, but do you keep punishing the guy, who has done everthing requried to try and atone for his transgression? is there no forgiveness in your heart? how can you continue to spew such nenom and hatred for Vick, when “the man” died on the cross that you may have a chance of redemption. He died on the cross that your sins may be forgiven. If he is big enough to give his life for you, how can yolu, a mere human mortal do no less for someone like Mike Vick. it’s really sad that you have no forgiveness in your heart. No human is beyond redemption if they truly are trying to make amends for their sins or wrongdoings and Vick is try to as much, why not give him that chance. Not everyone who commits a crime is always a thug in life, some can make a change and I truly believe Vick is on esuch person. I am willing to give him that chance. I could give a rats butt less what he does, good or bad in life, just don’t “honor” him because that is a slap in the face to fans of the Falcons who he disappointed over and over again. You my friend are sitting to high on your high horse and making Vick to much the villian in all this. Sure he may deserve some blame, but not as much as you are laying at his feet. The way I see it, you can have all your whinning and pontificating about Vick. He cost the boss a ton of money, but yet, he MADE the boss a ton of money, to me, one hand washes the other. it is not as cut and dry as you are trying to make it. some things goes deeper than mere dollars and cents. We are talking about the fabric of one’s inner being and life here. You may not think that Vick has any moral character, but I beg to differ. but, then only time will tell. Vick is only the most hated man in America be of all the bad publicity he got for the dog fighting, as if that is the worst crime that can be perfomed by an individual. I beg to differ there. I say that all the murder of human beings in Mexico over the drug trade is 10 times worse than anything Vick did with those dogs. i for one don’t place an animal, as helpless as some may seem, over the life of a human being. Vick is the most hated man in america becasue most of us pick and choose those things that we want to dispise most. he is the most hated man in America by what percentage, 45% our of 100% with 40% beng someone else and another 15% to yet another person. yeah, that 45% is a majority, but a majority of what, citizens based along racial lines? of course, you cant get numbers and turn them to mean anything you so choose. i pay no attention to that, for I know numbers don’t always tell the whole story. You tell that most hated stuff tho the citizens of Mexico who have friends and family murdered daily over drugs and ask them who they hate more, Vick and his killing of dogs are the drug lords who are murdering their family members and friends on a daily basis. My friends, it seems that we need to get our priorities straight.

Did someone honor a drug lord at the Falcons game? Your not comparing apples to apples. By honoring Vick, don’t you think you help promote that killing over drugs (failed a drug test while on probation and the water bottle incident). I am surely on the fence on this one guys. I love watching Vick play as I am sure each and every Falcon fan across the globe did on Sunday. The question has nothing to do with what Vick is doing now, it is Honoring him for his past, which all of you can agree is somewhat of a shadow on our great club.
If Arthur Blank and the current Falcons administration want to honor Vick, then that is up to them. You have to remember Vick did not personal effect our lives the way he did his teammates, coaches, and the rest of the Falcon administration. The people who were closest to him were the ones who had to deal with this on a personal level. If they wish to forgive him and honor the ON FIELD achievements he had while wearing the Falcons uniform, then why should we judge him.
Romedog I believe you said it best, we all are in titled to our own opinions, that includes Arthur Blank and the Falcons organization. Let them bestow honor on those they feel are worthy.
On a side note, the Falcons are doing great this year and will need our support each and every game. Let us forget about the past and focus on the bright future we now have ahead of us!!! GO ATLANTA!!!!!!

Did someone honor a drug lord at the Falcons game? Your not comparing apples to apples. By honoring Vick, don’t you think you help promote that killing over drugs (failed a drug test while on probation and the water bottle incident). What are you saying to our children when you “honor” a thug like him? Again, I say, you are missing my point. You don’t condone bad behavior, much less honor it.

Romedawg, I am comparing most people pure hatred for Vick over his killing of 6-8 dogs
Vs most people failure to exact the same amount of hatred over the murder/slaughter of innocent human being in Mexico over drugs. The small amount, (allegdely) of drugs Vick had in no way compares to the amount of drugs that is getting across the border. Plus, i wish people would get over this Airport incident of the pipe with the hidden compartment. There was nothing found in it, only it was a pipe with a hidden compartment and we want to crucify vick for that! that is stupid. If the authorities had anything on Vick as far as the waterbottle/pipe is concerned, they would have acted on it. It is a case of “over reacting” over a waterbottle/pipe and nothing more, that is why the matter was dropped, yet we have people like you who want to keep bring it up as it amounts to something when it clearly doesn’t. Clearly, we need to get our priorities right. If Vick wasn’t a celebrity, the deeds he has done would be water under the bridge by now. We glorify wealth and money so much, that any person with plenty of it is always raked over the coals for any misdeeds because we who don’t have their wealth are bitter and jealous. Why? becaue we work hard, sweat, and toil every day for mostly peanuts, when these people, who mostly “white” people consider thugs and uneducated, get millions. It is called jealously and resentment and all this “todo” over Vick is mostly just jealously and resentment, nothing more, it most certainly isn’t because we “love dogs” that much, It is because of the bigotry that we have within ourselves of people we feel are less/inferior to who we are.
