Falcons to sport their throwback jerseys vs. 49ers

falcons.0921FLOWERY BRANCH – Since the Falcons and the 49ers used to be division foes in the old NFC West, it makes perfect sense that they break out the throwback jerseys for the first time this season at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Falcons will sport their throwback uniforms on Sunday against Tampa Bay. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC)

Falcons will sport their throwback uniforms on Sunday against Tampa Bay. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC)

DOL, but the throwback uniforms of the eighties when we were getting our clocks cleaned by Montana and crew were red helmets/red jerseys for away games and red helmets/white jerseys for home right? I don’t understand how the black jerseys would have anything to do with those games…

Thank goodness Montana and Jerry Rice retired many years ago. Being 0-3, the 49ers probably feel liked they are backed into a corner. Accompany that with the nasty whoopin’ we put on them last year and they will probably come out cranky. Rise up Falcons and be prepared!

What a game…what a week. A few quick observations from a long-time fan:

(1) I saw “IT” from Ryan on Sunday. For the record: he can throw the ball 50 yards in the air…saw it when he missed #83 in OT. Quick passes, running down to day light, emotion…this was, indeed, his best game as a pro. NO INTs!!

(2) Snelling may be a better RB than…

(3) Forget that for now. LBs are physical and downright intimidating. Hard hitting. That poor new RB for the Saints has to be in pain.

(4) KUDOS to Grimes. Has picked off Brees in two consecutive years. Notice that they didn’t try stupid stuff with him again after that. Dude has come a LONG way…

(5) Sam Baker needs to WAKE UP and get with the program. Everyone else is focused dude. That whiff in OT almost cost us the game and your penalties are starting to add up. Smith should not hesitate to go with the other tackle that filled in last year.

(6) DeCoud had a pretty average game…pick was huge, but tackling was suspect on Sunday. Young players struggle with consistency and he had some struggle on Sunday. Maybe he is being asked to do morenow that the veteran Coleman is hurt. Whatever the case, we need him tuned in. He is a potential All-Pro.

(7) Mularkey play calling was VERY suspect, despite the big win. On the drive just before the Saint’s march to tying the game with the field goal, I kept waiting for the play action. Especially on second down of the last series before we turned it over on downs. Predictably there was no play action on 2nd down, Birds had to pass on 3rd and 4th. Mix it up dude and turn #2 loose. A score there would have sealed it. WIN THE GAME.

Heck of a win…big time effort. Niners WILL be ready and hungry. Pound them with the run. Find White and Douglas on the outside deep…their CBs are suspect.

Maybe I am in the minority but I thought the Glanville era Uni’s were by far the ugliest, most plain jane, Uni’s in franchise history. I still have one of those Jerseys and I hate looking at it. Looks like a cheap pop warner Uniform.

It seems to me that this is an incredible expense to go to. They must have two or three different helmets for each player to get the throwbacks to match the old look helmet. What does all that cost?!? But I guess when you pay players millions, and if it helps you sell more replica jerseys is is a good investment.

I love the 80’s Red Jersey, red Helmet look best. But then my screen name aint PreyDAWG for nothin…even after the horrible season the Dawgs are having now.

@PreyDog and Falcon Jim,

The way the birds were running it down their throats, it HAD to be open. The first play in OT that Ryan missed to Douglas was a play action fake (with #34 doing the studder block thing). I do believe that they roll plays out over the course of a year very slowly to watch what ends up on film. Got it…but the play action is very basic Mularkey. At some point during that final drive in regulation, you had to pull it out of Turner’s belly and throw it down the seam. It was wide open…particulary on 2nd down after Turner ran for 4 yards.

Excellent article Frederick. I agree with you wholeheartedly on #5 Sam Baker. I am an ol’ OT myself so my eyes are automatically drawn to that position, and it was not pretty. Unfortunately, his performance has a direct impact on our main man Mattyice. I hope Baker arises to the challenge.
Regarding play-calling #7, I keep telling myself that we are not pulling into the complete depths of play-type potential for the sole purpose of keeping other teams thinking we are more “1-dimensional” on film, and are saving those other types of offenses for later on in the year when we need it. Pat Yasinskas has and interesting perspective on Ryan’s “issues”. Basically, when the Falcons are behind his rating is off the charts; get a lead and his rating is pedestrian.

Throwback trivia – the helmet has a gold stripe in deference to Ga. Tech. When the Falcons’ colors were determined to be red and black, they raised a howl – well a buzz – over it, and the gold and white stripe on the helmet was added to placate them.

I still think the best Falcons uni was the red and white with grey pants of the early 80s. I’m not very fond of black – too gimmicky. Reminds me of arch-moron Jerry “Unloaded Gun Offense” Glanville.

Already have the answer. Atlanta cannot wear the all-black uniforms…at least not the black jerseys. Each NFL team is allowed ONE alternate jersey. The AFL teams got away with wearing all of their throwbacks, AND their regular alternates, because of the whole AFL celebration thing.

But this year they are hunkering down. Atlanta declared their black throwback as the alternate, which means they cannot sport the black jerseys. I know…it is so freaking dumb. I havnt even seen the modern black jerseys being sold in stores lately.

You will notice that is why Atlanta hasnt worn the black pants lately…bc the black pants were a part of that alternate uniform.

Stupid NFL rules…

I love the throwbacks and red helmets. I really love that whipping we put on the saints, we had the ball for 47:15 to 23:45. Matty Ice out played drew and we also out ran the saints 186 to 30 yards. As of now we lead the league in TOP. 1998 he we come back to the superbowl, and for the 49ers fans who comes to the game sunday were going to kick off in that butt once again.

Regarding Mike Vick: This man has done some things wrong, was caught, and paid the full price. He had paid his debt so why don’t we all just show a little forgiveness.
“….. and he said, He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone at her” John 8:7
I think we have potentially the best QB in pro ball but I wish Mike only the best……….

Those should be our home uniforms all the time. You don’t look any sharper than the black jerseys with the red helmets with the original Falcon. Get a white jersey with some thick black trim to wear on the road with the red helmets and you will have something.

Great uni’s, great memories! All we need is Claude Humphrey and John Zook coming off the edge to sack Alex Smith…or would it be John Brody? Throw in Tommy (should be a HOF ‘er) Nobis to stuff the run and Jim ‘Meat’ Mitchell to go over the middle on third and short.

Well, since someone already claimed Bubba Bean and Haskell Stanback, I’ll mention Tim Mazzetti (one round on the house) and Junior Bryant!

Of course we know the throwback uniforms are great.Talk about the simplicity, its the closest Falcon fans can get to a Cleveland, Baltimore (Colts) or Green Bay uniform! Its a timeless classic of a uniform. No, those weren’t the best years by any means…but those were hard years in “old Fulton County”, our dump of a stadium in the southern elements of late fall and early winter! You know the rest of the story…!

These are the best uniforms the Falcons ever had… and how many people have to say so before we ditch the Power Ranger unis they wear now and go back to something strong and classic? Ditch the black helmets for good…it was Glanville’s first of many BAAAAAD ideas!

Then again, the whole thing is just a stunt by NFL Properties to sell more jerseys. Yuck.

To D-Man at 10:22 a.m…. I know the Falcons teams of the 1980s weren’t always that great, but I LOVED THOSE UNIFORMS!!! I hope that sometime soon, the Falcons will bring back those classic late 70s-early 80s unis for a few games… the red helmets (much like the ones in the photos above) with the RED jerseys with white numbers and silver trim and the silver pants… those were a GREAT look, and they bring me back to the Bartkowski-Andrews-Cain-Brezina-Pridemore-Glazebrook-Lawrence-Miller-Luckhurst days of 1980, 81, 82.

Just one man’s opinion… oh, and a note to the Saints and any other NFL team… tradition dictates that you wear the COLOR uniforms at home and WHITE on the road!!! The Falcons tried that white-at-home crap in the late 80s… yeah, in addition to going 4-12 some years, we looked like the VISITORS at Atlanta-FulCo… unless it’s 100 degrees where you play in early September, WEAR THE DARKS AT HOME AND WHITE ON THE ROAD!

However, it’s just the opposite in baseball, basketball and hockey… the NHL screwed up and now every time a team is in white on TV, I think they are at home. Anyway…. enough rambling. GO FALCONS!!!

I ask myself, how many of you remember Captain Krazy (Fulton Kykendall), I had to opportunity to have him on my team and play in a charity golf event a number of years ago and I can tell you it was quite an expierence that I will never forget (Weatherspoon could turn out to be the same type of player.

Fulton, hope you are doing well. GO FALCONS AND GO SOUTHERN RUSH !!!!

alanfalcon,
At least you had Captain Krazy on your team.
You can imagine my surprise when I showed up for an 8 o`clock softball game in Moultrie one Sat morning. As we got closer to our field I see Captain Krazy warming up with Jim Mitchell. Seems the Falcons had a softball team.
I ruled out running over the catcher first thing.
Our shortstop said to just forget about him turning a double play.
Thankfully, those guys couldn`t hit a softball like they could a hit a ballcarrier.

I agree with some of the fans here that Snelling is a better back than Turner.Turner didn’t impress me Sunday against the Saints, even though he finished with 130 yrds.Snelling seems to be more consistant and breaks the big gain more than Turner.

DOL I think the visiting team gets to choose the unis they are going to wear and the home team adjusts accordingly. Had the birds gone with the standard away uni (white jersey) we would have see the Saints in their all black look. Conversely Arizona had a similar color scheme so the Falcons wore the away whites for that game.

Keep the throwback uniforms or the Glanville era unis. The current style stinks and everybody agrees.

Actually Old Dawg, everyone doesn’t agree! I for one like the new uni’s and logo! And there are other’s that like them too. I don’t mind seeing the old look for throwback games, but not as a permanent uniform.

Change is good sometimes, and often times change is for the better! My case in point, the Falcons organization and culture changed from the Smith Era to the Blank Era; the attitudes of the coaches, and players have changed for the better as well.
