FLOWERY BRANCH – Since the Falcons and the 49ers used to be division foes in the old NFC West, it makes perfect sense that they break out the throwback jerseys for the first time this season at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Falcons will sport their throwback uniforms on Sunday against Tampa Bay. (CURTIS COMPTON/AJC)
The Falcons will wear the 1966 throwback uniforms. The Falcons were 2-0 when they wore their throwback uniforms in 2009.
The Falcons defeated Carolina 28-20 on Sept. 20 and Tampa Bay 20-17 on Nov. 29. Both games were played at the Georgia Dome.

@ Section 108
Its the only rationale that makes any sense 108. The Saints were primed for a throw over the top. Turner and Snelling made every Saints defender take a step forward in anticipation. It HAD to be wide open…

Pat Yasinskas has and interesting perspective on Ryan’s “issues”. Basically, when the Falcons are behind his rating is off the charts; get a lead and his rating is pedestrian.
His conclusion – the Falcons are closing the playbook with the lead. I’m with Pat – Mr. Ice has now shown the leadership, open up the playbook for the whole game.

I wish the Falcons would go with their new black jerseys as their base look (I think the fan base likes that jersey better than the red one based on what people tended to wear to the games), and use the Bartkowski era red uniforms as their throwback.
I also agree with the earlier poster: I loved the all-black uniforms, especially for the big Monday, Sunday or Thursday night games. Much more swagger in black.

Hey, I had no problem with the Jerry Glanville bad guy attitude, the Falcons just have to be able to back it up. Make the Dome intimidating. At least the Dome wasn’t full of road fans doing those days.

The Glanville act was too much. The Glanville defense I’ll take.
The dome is not intimidating with 20,000 empty seats.

About the uni’s:
My favorite uni’s were the early 80’s with the red helmets and red jerseys by far!
Black ones in the 90’s were ok too but I love their uniforms now!
As long as we win it will be fine with me though.
I am not super impressed with our offensive coodinator yet tho!

Love the throwbacks, but maybe the Falcons shouldn’t wear them against the Niners, a team that routinely thrashed them back when those were the regular uniforms.

those aren’t throwbacks. they fit too tightly. remember when players actually had sleeves? of course we understand the reason behind the tight fit but let’s go all out if it’s throwback time.

the throwbacks look too much like the browns I like the current home jersey better than any in all sports. But a game in the red helmets and red jersey’s would be cool.

Throwback trivia – the helmet has a gold stripe in deference to Ga. Tech. When the Falcons’ colors were determined to be red and black, they raised a howl – well a buzz – over it, and the gold and white stripe on the helmet was added to placate them.
I still think the best Falcons uni was the red and white with grey pants of the early 80s. I’m not very fond of black – too gimmicky. Reminds me of arch-moron Jerry “Unloaded Gun Offense” Glanville.

You missed out….throwback TG#88 jerseys were half price at the AZ game.
Falcons should throw more promotions like that and advertise them better. I bet there are at least 15,000 willing to pay $80 to get a jersey for $40.

I don’t like the throwback unis at all!!!! The only good season I can remember wearing the red n gray uni’s was Leeman Bennett’s close to superbowl team….I don’t want to ever go back to those old memories….being the Nfl whuppin’ boys for San Fran, the Rams, Dallas…<> Mommy, make it stop!!!!

Already have the answer. Atlanta cannot wear the all-black uniforms…at least not the black jerseys. Each NFL team is allowed ONE alternate jersey. The AFL teams got away with wearing all of their throwbacks, AND their regular alternates, because of the whole AFL celebration thing.
But this year they are hunkering down. Atlanta declared their black throwback as the alternate, which means they cannot sport the black jerseys. I know…it is so freaking dumb. I havnt even seen the modern black jerseys being sold in stores lately.
You will notice that is why Atlanta hasnt worn the black pants lately…bc the black pants were a part of that alternate uniform.
Stupid NFL rules…

and the reason the Saints have worn white at home is b/c of a new tradition.
Remember, they beat Atlanta when opening the SuperDome back up, while wearing white at home. It was kind of a new beginning for them…so theyve worn white at home very often since

While we’re talking throwbacks…..let’s run the wishbone with William Andrews, Lynn Cain, and Jason Snelling. Why does Snelling seem to be more of a complete back than Turner?

Funny. The Falcons actually ran a wishbone with Andrews, Cain, and Bean at the same time.
Once it resulted in a TD run of about 60 yds by Bubba Bean.

The reason I like the old red jersey is that in those days I learned how to be a real fan. I watched every game hoping they would come back and get a win. They seldom did but still I sat there. When they did win one I loved every second. I still have an old red jersey from the last year before they want to the glanville black. I have an older white one with red and black piping logo over the top of the piping,it may be from around 83. I can’t wear either now they seem to have srank hanging in my closet. I’ll be a fan till the day I die!
