Saints running back Reggie Bush has some time to mend fences with Kim Kardashian.
FLOWERY BRANCH – Yeah, Reggie Bush is hurt, but so what?
He really hasn’t done much against the Falcons since he’s been in the league. All his broken leg really means is that the Falcons will get to see more of the hard-charging Pierre Thomas.
However, while Bush is out with a broken leg, he is 6-0 against the Falcons, thanks mostly to his teammates. He was only a factor in one of the six games.
Bush, the disgraced Heisman trophy winner, was drafted in 2006. The Falcons have played the Saints eight times and are 1-7 against them over that period.
In the Falcons 34-20 victory on Nov. 11, 2008, Bush didn’t play. He also didn’t play in the Saints 34-14 victory on Dec. 12, 2007, which turned out to be Bobby Petrino’s last game.
In the first meeting in 2007, Bush caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees with 5:15 left to play and ran for the two-point conversion in the Saints 22-14 victory.
He wasn’t a major factor in the other five games.
He’s never rushed for more than 80 yards against the Falcons. He’s never had more than 46 yards receiving against the Falcons. He also was a non-factor in the return game against the Falcons.
Here’s the Bush breakdown vs the Falcons:
Year Date Teams Rushing Receiving
(carries-yards-tds) (catches-yards-tds)
2009 11/2 @NO 35, ATL 27 2-3-1 2-11-0
12/13 NO 26, @ ATL 30 6-33-0 6-46-2
2008 11/9 @ATL 34, NO 20 Bush does not play
12/7 @NO 29, ATL 25 10-80-0 2-26-1
2007 10/21 @NO 22, ATL 16 17-54-0 5-19-1
12/10 NO 34, 2 ATL 14 Bush does not play
2006 9/25 @NO 23, ATL 3 13-51-0 4-19-0
11/26 NO 31, @ATL 13 5-24-0 3-21-0

I’m not expecting any drop off in the Saints offense due to Bush’s absence. They still have Drew Brees, their full compliment of receivers, and a solid O-line. Their gameplan will change up some, but not drastically.
I think our secondary can do a good job covering their receivers. My main concern is the screen pass. The Saints are one of the best screen teams in the NFL. It’s important that we snuff out that option.

considering we have Norwood out AGAIN… and Michael Turner has been non existant this year not really.
He’s a great receiver out of the backfield, but they have so many options and Brees is so fantastic at finding guys open in the middle of a zone… I don’t see it hurting them trying to accomplish what they want to do. Pierre Thomas is FAR more important than Reggie. What I’m hoping is that the Falcons can make them one dimensional and stop the run..that will give them at least a chance. Tackling well in this one is critical.

D-Led, As I have said over in the CAGE, our kickoff coverage scares me and we gave up a return last week (called back). That is where we catch the break: in the return game. I don’t think it means as much on offense eventhough Reggie was looking better.

Yeah and one of the reasons why the Saints are a good screen team is they get away with murder. Go back and watch some tape and keep in mind 2 things:
1. Linemen 5 yards past the line of scrimmage on a pass play is a five yard penalty.
2. Blocking while the ball is in the air is pass interference.
Since Peyton brought in the Chuck & Duck the Saints have gotten away with these 2 infractions on a weekly basis. I wouldn’t have a problem with it except that if their opponent does the same thing, out comes the laundry.

This is an idiotic thesis. Defenses have to game plan around Bush, regardless of whether he has hurt them in the past. He is a game-changer on any given play. And you’re seriously questioning whether his being out of the line-up is a break? Looks like we have a new Terrance Moore in the house. You’re embarrassing yourself.

We’ve got to get hands up at the line, bring pressure up the middle and just try to knock balls away, mess up the timing as much as possible. Drew Brees is as good as it gets in the NFL these days.
On offense, the Falcons MUST run the football and they must protect the football. No team strips the ball more than New Orleans. They also have pretty good corners. I think you have to attack the middle of the field and or try to use Roddy’s height and physical ability. Hopefully Jenkins will be back too so Douglass can be used in the slot.

Bush being out makes a huge difference. He’s such a weapon in the passing game. Bush is not a good running back but is a fabulous receiver out of the backfield. Thomas is a fine player but nothing special.

Bush is fluff, in the sense that he never breaks a tackle. Touch him solidly and he goes down. It would be interesting to see how many runs for negative yards he has in his career. Seems he is 90% little to no gain (2 yards or less), and 10% big gains (over 20 yards). His avg yards per carry is where it is because he breaks the 50+ yard runs so often, by avoiding tackles. Norwood is the same kind of runner, only not of Bush-boy calibre. Its like they have air in their bones, like birds. Slap them and they go down, but miss them and they fly away. The end result is they get hurt often too, and after a while they don’t come back.

Bush – 75 touches for 387 yards/5 TDs against the falcons since he came in the league.
Over the same period (and also not playing in two games – 9/25/06&11/2/09), Jerious Norwood had 58 touches for 354 yards/1 TD against the Saints.
Jerious has never really been a red zone option for the Falcons offense, whereas Bush was/is used in the red zone in the Saints offense. Most of his 5 TDs were short yardage plays if I remember correctly.
I’d say the respective losses of Bush and Norwood kind of cancel each other out, except no one’s talking about Jerious and everyone’s talking about Reggie.
Reggie’s career numbers:
Rushing: 495/1958 4.0avg 17TD
Receiving: 269/1997 7.4avg 12TD
14 fumbles/8 lost
Jerious Norwood
Rushing: 375/1995 5.3avg 7TD
Receiving: 96/912 9.5avg 3TD
2 fumbles/2 lost
Special teams:
Reggie averaged 8.1yds per punt return with 4 TDs and 4 fumbles
Jerious averaged 25.5yds per kick return with 0 TDs and 1 fumble.
I wish Jerious could stay healthy, he’s a great player when he is.

The consensus seems to be that the loss of Bush will have a minor impact on the Saints but bear in mind they’ve lost numerous RBs through training camp/preseason and now their premier rusher/decoy is out leaving one less superstar to gameplan around. Personally, I’ve always held that Pierre Thomas is severely underrated and the better back overall. Brees still has plenty of arrows in the quiver but the unavailability of Bush shouldn’t be underestimated as others have noted, he’s a sparkplug to the team…..

Let’s just all see if, just for one game, we can cover Colston. That guy has murdered us for years, and made it look easy. In addition, I have a fervent hope: I know Ryan is looking primarily at tape of the NO defense, but I hope he takes a peak at the short passing game that Brees and Pete Carmichael have perfected. Notice how fast the ball is out. Notice Brees’ accuracy, viz. how his receivers, whether a back, or TE or WR, are hit IN STRIDE, moving AWAY. They don’t have to stop, turn, and face the QB to catch the ball (as we are prone to do). This little difference make a huge difference in YACs.

The Saints offense has faced possible top 5 defenses in their first two games. The Falcons are not facing Dennis Dixon or Derek Anderson this week, and the Falcon defense is not in the class of the Vikings or 49ers. Last week the Falcons did what they’ve done for a while and that’s beat up a bad team at home. Reggie Bush is only one of the many weapons on the Saint offense, and unfortunately for the Falcons this offense is likely to light up the scoreboard on Sunday. One major difference between the two teams is the Saints found a way to win with a subpar effort(49ers), and the Falcons did not(Steelers). Whether it’s close or not, expect the Saints to be 3-0 and the Falcons to be 1-2. A home win over Derek Anderson and the Cardinals is simply not nearly enough for me to drink the Falcon kool-aid!

DOL, your Bush Breakdown states that the Falcons beat the Saints, 30-26 on 12/13/09. We actually lost that game 26-23. Then your story indicates the Saints won at the Superdome on 10/21/07 by a 22-14, yet the Bush Breakdown indicates a 22-16 loss. Finally, back to 12/13/09 – Reggie Bush had two TD catches against us in the 26-23 loss. So all of this begs a couple questions, can’t the AJC afford proofreaders? Secondly, what constitutes a “non-factor”? Clearly, Bush was a huge difference in our 3-point loss in the GA Dome.

Maybe you’re right, maybe it doesn’t matter if Bush is there. But maybe the guy who replaces him is not as good, and allows the Falcons to pay additional attention to Colston or Shockey or Pierre Thomas. Maybe the extra workload on Pierre causes him to get tired and make a mistake. Bush is not the end all be all that he was drafted to be, but he’s a decent player that was versatile.
Remember he also returns punts. Maybe field position becomes more of a weapon for the Falcons. I think no Bush is better than some Bush. he he

When Bush is on the field you can’t treat him like any other back. Backs and tight end are covered by Strong Safeties and Linebackers, Bush requires corner back skills, or maybe a free safety with exceptional coverage skills., but never a linebacker. Without him playing it frees up the defense to be more aggressive playing the run game and you might be able to add a more physical player to your defense.

More inane boasting from the fleur de lis heads. They remind me of the nouveau-riche. They stumbled on a gold nugget(Brees) while grunting for worms and the sudden wealth(Lombardi) has gone to their heads. Saints fans: The party with the Lombardi will be over Sunday! We caught an important break when Bush went down because the Falcons defense is better collectively as opposed to individual matchups. Our linebackers will dictate how aggressive our front line and secondary can be by picking up the routes Brees likes to look for when setting an offensive tempo. I know we can’t stop him but a few shots and hurries will give us the chances we need to beat this team. On offense, ball control, ball control and I especially hope Turner is ready because we need a two-headed attack from our running back position.

I stayed in New Orleans for two months (Army Reserve assignment)and although it’s a self-sufficient community, it does not have a powerful national voice (not one that has been taken seriously). Don’t think recreation, but think on practical matters (industry, government, education) so the Saints’ win brought that community civic pride you can’t pay for and now deserved scrutiny. I remember a local TV station used to put out “A pothole of the day” piece when I was there (late 2007)and I’m acquainted with a number of Saints fans (I live in Texas currently). Falcon Jim, Got to give it to you pal-you are one of about the 100 or so hard-core Falcon fans that exist. In a city with a metro pop of 5.6 million, there are probably half as many Eagle, Giant, or Steeler fans as are Falcon fans. Atlanta and Arizona top the list of cities where the locals are either not pulling for the home team or just don’t care at all. And believe me it’s not just football! Look at the Braves who in Bobby Cox’s last season, have had some very small crowds compared to other teams involved in pennant races. The reason: Atlanta has become like many Florida cities where seemingly everyone is from somewhere else. These people have no loyalty to the home team. Say what you like, but the Saint fans of the Gulf South Region are passionate fans. Atlanta’s pop is 10 times that of New Orleans, yet the Saint fans appear to outnumber the Falcon fans 10-1. I travel a whole lot , and see it all over the country. In a Vegas sportsbook, the Saint fans badly outnumber the falcon fans. Even in neighboring Alabama, located in the heart of college country, most pro football fans like the Saints over the Falcons. 5.6 million and still occasionally getting blacked out at home-what a joke! Being a Falcon fan is about like being an Arizona Cardinal fan!

Hiramsaint, your team was super last year. I give the Saints credit for their success, however this is another year and I want fair officiating. The Saints don’t need phony calls to win except when they play Atlanta. A spade is a spade, I call them the way they are.

PMC…good description comparing Bush to Metcalf, ha, your right. I have to agree with some of the posters…Bush creates problems for a defense and not having to account for him is not insignificant.

Mack…check this out man, Turner, Turner, Turner, Snelling, Snelling, Snelling, Turner, Turner, Turner, Snelling, Snelling, Snelling…get the picture? Cover R.White with the great CBs, but what SF did to the Saints on the ground is nothing compared to what the Falcons will do!!!

GHunt: Phooney call huh? How ’bout “Neaux calls”? I’ve seen atlanta getting away with holding on that sorry clique you call an offensive line in both games you’ve played this year. Seems to me the refs bleaux calls both ways, but you pansies only complain when they geaux against your beauxs.
Blown calls are a part of the NFL, that’s why they had to institute the challenge flag system, but even with that, there are blown calls and no calls being made on virtually every play. Seaux stop your pitiful whining, it’s sickening.

Front Row,
It might help your constant whining if you actually knew the rules. There is no pass interference if the offense blocks before the pass is caught as long as the throw is behind the line of scrimmage. That might help to explain why there are no flags thrown.

Kim Kardashian? I wouldn’t be proud to have my picture taken with that trash. William Moore will start at safety.. this will be a key to the game as he is very inexperienced and has been injury prone.
