An ode to Jerious Norwood

In other news, Running back Jerious Norwood returned to practice and wide receiver Harry Douglas will play on Thursday vs. New England. Curtis Compton/Ccompton@ajc.com)

The electrifying Jerious Norwood, one of the nicest guys on the team, has had an injury-plagued career with the Falcons. Curtis Compton/Ccompton@ajc.com)

Perhaps coach Mike Smith just didn’t want to jump the gun Monday. But we don’t know why he’s gone all Bill Belichick on the media over injuries.

It was already out that Jerious Norwood had a torn ACL. He was seen in the locker room on crutches. He sent an e-mail to an associate

Norwood is an avid fisherman.

Norwood is an avid fisherman.

stating that his ACL was torn, but that he was in good spirits. His family was already apprised of his status.

Smith said the team was still evaluating things and if there was a season-ending knee injury that an announcement would be made.

They made it today and announced some other moves.

Norwood suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on the opening kickoff of the 41-7 pasting of the Cardinals. He tripped on Shann Schillinger’s foot and his right knee slammed into the Georgia Dome turf.

The players already knew that Norwood was done for the season on Monday.

Norwood had speed to burn.

Norwood had speed to burn.

“We are a run-first offense,” wide receiver Roddy White said. “We are just looking forward to next week. Mike (Turner) will be able to play. (Jason) Snelling will be backing him up and we’ll keep rolling.”

The Falcons also announced the addition of running back Gartrell Johnson to the active roster and terminated the contract of linebacker Bear Woods, who was on the practice squad. They signed running back Shawnbrey McNeal to replace Woods.

Johnson was a fourth-round draft pick of the Chargers in 2009. He had 43 yards on 13 carries for the Giants last season.

McNeal was signed by San Diego as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Southern Methodist. He was waived following training camp.

He rushed for 1,188 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior and was honorable mention all-Conference USA.

Norwood has been injury plagued over his career with the Falcons.

“Unfortunately, since we’ve been here Jerious has had some bumps and bruises and some missed time,” Smith said. “But he is a very talented football player and he’s been a guy that’s contributed to the success that we’ve had.”

When asked about the ACL tear on Monday, Smith said, “I don’t know where that report is coming from. We’ve had testing done and evaluation done this morning. We are going to continue to evaluate it. If it is indeed the case. Then we would announce that. But again,

Jerious Norwood on the move.

Jerious Norwood on the move.

that will come on Wednesday when we give our injury report.” (Umm, it came from an e-mail Jerious sent.)

The coaching staff thought Norwood could help them on third down. Norwood, who had four accrued years in the league, was a restricted free agent and received a second round tender last season. He was set to receive a salary of $1.759 million or 110 percent of his 2009 salary, whichever is greater.

“There is always a sense of frustration anytime that you don’t have your best players out there on the field,” Smith said. “That’s not necessarily directed toward Jerious or anyone else. Any time you don’t have your best players out there who give you the best chance to win, it is frustrating.”

Waynester, apparently not about Bear Woods. There were others on the practice squad who could have been wacked. We will miss Norwood’s speed. However, with the overall depth that Smitty and TD have created this is not as bad as the Saints losing Reggie Bush.

the staff made a HUGE mistake for letting Dmitri Nance go to the practice squad where he could be poached by Green Bay. he would have been the perfect replacement for Jerious. But no. We chose Antone Smith for some reason. Big mistake.

I believe the Falcons have a solid offense and a solid defense. I don’t think the birds will turn the ball over 4 times, and give up a safety as the 49ers did against the Saints. We have a fair chance to compete well against them this time.

I don’t expect the Falcons to choke like the 49ers did; nor do I expect the Saints to defend the toilet Dome like they were the Pittsburg Steelers on opening day missing their starting QB.

I do expect a whole bunch of WhoDats whining every time a Brees pass falls incomplete. I can only hope the refs call the game evenly but after 4+ years of seeing the NFL help them out, I don’t think that dream will come true.

Well, D.O.L., i truly hate this happened to J.Norwood but i think all of us bloggers knew it was just a matter of time before he went down again. Like Norwood himself said, some players are injury prone, for whatever reason he’s had that fate on him. Best of Luck J. Norwood in a complete recovery. Is A.Smith activated this week? no news about him at all today, also i do think we should have kept D.Nance as he could sure get across the goal line in preseason games!
Also worth mentioning is the meltdown last sunday by S.Baker, on three straight plays penalties were called against him, he also has four (4) holding calls in two games and Falcons coach Smitty says its not problematic and its the re-positioning of Referee in backfield and other little things. Well, better go back and count the sacks in with the holding calls as Baker is off to a terrible start at LT and Ryan is going to pay the price on these missed blocks leading to sacks of Ryan or the dreaded yellow flag for holding! the holding calls and sacks are called drive killers for a reason.
Now the Saints get a taste of the scheduling we had last year, monday night game on the road and a short week to get ready for the Falcons! Make no mistake about it, Falcons go into N.Orleans looking for revenge and a Win! Falcons 24-17 at long last!

Another guess….J Norwood walked off the field after the opening kickoff and was diagnosed and carted off on the sideline later.

I missed that part as my seats are on the opposite side of the dome from the Falcons entrance. At any rate, Norwood was absent from the sideline but, in the second half, M. Turner was warming up as if he was going to see more action.

I also guess A Smith was inactive AND the Falcons mgmt did not notice that D. Anderson gave up after the wood brought to him by Mr. Moore (forcing a time out).

It was nice to see, finally, the team give Snelling a bit of rest by running the dive to #34 about 47 times in a row. #44 is made to dish the pain, not take it especially at garbage time.

Make my point for me B4…bad calls are part of SAINTS games. Most other games are played without such blatant homerism.

FYI the Detroit overrule was 100% correct according to the rules. Further, if it was ruled a TD it would have been overturned.

All that said, there is still NO REASON AT ALL for the refs to give the ball to the Saints after the non-touch. The ref never saw the ball touched but still decided otherwise and there is no way you can get around it except to admit the favoritism – it was BLATANT.

SeenThisB4

What play are you talking about Front Row? The punt where the niner looked like he touched the ball, or the one where he actually did muff it?

As for Detroit, I don’t care what they ruled, THAT WAS A TOUCHDOWN!, Detroit got screwed.

FrontRow

Perhaps the TD rule needs to be changed but for now the ruling in the Lions game was correct.

A far cry from the refs taking away one of the 49ers challenge flags. I never saw the rest of the game; at that point I turned it off knowing, with those refs, the Saints chances of winning were greatly enhanced.

Maybe it just been too long since you have seen a fairly officiated game.

And no, it did not even “look like” the 49er touched the ball.

I do think a lot of Woods. He’s a terrific young man who worked his butt off to make this team. Don’t get me wrong–I like Norwood a lot as a person, a fishin’ buddy, a neighbor, but not as a pro player with his injuries. I’d like to see him still be able to walk to the lake when he’s old and grey not stuck in a hoverround due to additional leg injuries. Hopefully, we’ll figure out which one of the newly-added RBs will stick and bring Bear back on board before some LB-needy team snaps him up.
B4
Seems I recall Bush putting it on the ground quite a bit, too….FRONTROW has it right and you know it. The League has spent millions propping up the NO franchise over the last 6 years to prevent it’s loss to San Antonio–they don’t want another Texas team–and between the league and ESPN they have bent over backwards to promote the Saints and their home city….

Waynester: The NFL and a whole lot of other people nationwide, including Atlanta, did a lot for New Orleans, that’s a fact not lost on me BUT playing home games in New York, San Antonio, and Baton Rouge weren’t part of it. I guess that fact was lost on you. Saints came back renewed in 2006 with 30+ new faces on the active squad, and a new coaching staff that made it their mission to rebuild the Saints, as the city was rebuilding itself. It took four years to go from doormat to to the penthouse. Did we get lucky along the way, sure, there’s always a little luck involved, but we’ve had our share of bad bounces too, Payton for instance had one of the worst red flag challenge outcomes in the league, lost a bunch of games to because our kickers couldn’t hit easy fgs much less game winners, and we’ve had our own fair share of injuries. But we manage to stamp the words “Property of the New Orleans Saints” on the falcants since 2006! Just like we will on Sunday.

Here are more than a few reasons why the Falcons could/should beat the Saints on Sunday.

1.) The Saints offense hasn’t been nearly as good as last year.

2.) The Saints would have lost to the Niners had they not turned the ball over 2 times inside the redzone and they still needed a last second field goal to win.

3.) The Cardinals might blow but we totally this mantled them. The Saints barely beat a Niners team that got bulldozed by the Seahawks in Week 1.

4.) Matt Ryan played like absolute crap in last year’s game in the SuperDome and the Saints still only won by 8 points 35-27.

5.) Matt Ryan and Michael Turner missed the game in Atlanta and you guys gave up 300 yards passing to Chris Redman and still needed a last second field goal to win.

6.) This is probably the most important stat. Yes it is true the Saints have dominated the Falcons since Sean Payton and Drew Brees got there but the 1 loss was in 2008 in Atlanta when Reggie Bush didn’t play. Bush played in every single game the Saints have beaten the Falcons over the past 4 years. Bush is out and won’t play against the Falcons.

7.) The Falcons are certainly due to beat the Saints in the SuperDome. 2002 was a long time ago.

8.) The Falcons defense is much, much improved over last year.

Hate losing Bear and feel we could have cut one of the WR’s instead. We shouldn’t have let Nance go to the PS, that was STUPID!!! With Smith down already, (who I liked), we thankfully have a very solid backup with Snelling who looked fairly better to me than Turner so far. As for Norwood, this doesn’t surprise me anymore than it does the team, some guys just can’t stay healthy and he’s one of them. He’s never going to be the RB we wanted for sure, especially now, so after his next injury which surely won’t be long after he returns from this one he’ll probably be done with the Falcons (depending on how this injury effects him from being offered another contract). I think it’s about time to focus on signing a solid fourth rounder next year to be a backup we can groom, if Johnson or McNeil don’t pan out this year.

Front Row,

The “homey” call you are whining about was overturned after the 49ers challenged it. Yes it was a bad call, but in the end the refs got the call right and the 49ers kept the ball, so what are you talking about? That play didn’t decide the game, the other 4 turnovers and the botched snap for a safety did. I don’t mind you not liking the Saints with this being a rivalry and all but seriously take the blinders off.

If the 49ers didn’t turn the ball over, if the Saints only beat them by 3 then imagine what Atlanta will do.. blah blah blah… This is the same old whining and crying of teams that got BEAT!!! The Saints started last season 13-0, beat 3 Superbowl winning QB’s in the playoffs to win the title, and had the highest avg margin of victoy in the NFL (That’s hardly the result of “homer” calls, FYI the Saints were undefeated on the road last yr until the final game against Carolina where none of the starters played to rest for the playoffs, they actually lost 2 games at home which kind of defies your logic.

The Saints have won their 1st 2 games this season, while not in the convincing fashion we as Saints fans are used to, but I would rather be 2-0 than 1-1. The Saints have won while not clicking on all cylinders offensively, what do you think will happen when they finally do get going?

You have a right to your opinion, but at least get it right if you are gonna complain about something

You can’t make plays from the bench, I was hoping Jerious would have just put on a few extra pounds before it came to this, it’s over don’t feel bad though because one of the true greats Kevin Faulk may have ended his career as well with the same injury. In order to be that same type back Faulk was you have to stay healthy, be able to block the blitz, & checkdown out of the backfield making yards after contact. Never got a chance, too bad !!! Ok to all you saints’ fans, but last year is last year and that is why this game will be different! Falcons atone for two losses last year to saints to win this game and the score will not be indicative at how the Falcons take it to the Saints, we have to deal with Mularky’s play calling which will keep score closer than it should have been, my prediction again is Falcons 24-17 !!!

Ok lets not go there with stupid arguments fans until Sunday, Brees will still find ways to make plays, they are the defending champs that being said their defense will bend all day, but usually will get a break ! So it’s gonna come down to who wants it more, Brees will be like Peyton checking off to what the D gives him. If Matt can match that intensity & not wait till the 4th Qtr like A. Smith we may get some breaks on D as well. Did anyone see that you can shove the ball down their throat on the ground ? We have been vunerable on the ground as well but we are in the top ten in pass D so it will be a tooth & nail fight to the end.

Breesus…..doesn’t matter. The refs had no business making the call except to enforce the Saints rule. Face it…its a homey call just like the homey non-call (Sharper laying out R. White with the ball in the air) during J Greer’s pick six OR the 15 second interference call delay after B Grimes clean pick of Brees / Meachum OR the Saints picking up a dead ball punt for a TD (why the heck did we have to challenge that one?) OR…I could go on and on.

My favorite is now out of the picture……Reggie Bush breaking a screen pass with linemen clearly downfield. Now that Reggie is out it’s gonna be hard for the Saints to get that call.

Let’s see what your homey refs come up with Sunday. Believe me the Falcons brass is preparing for it.

It doesn’t matter what I tell you or what the truth actually is, you are going to put your spin on it saying that it’s the refs giving the Saints the game. Riddle me this, if it’s the refs giving the Saints calls why didn’t they do it in 06 right after Katrina? How ever did the Saints go 8-8 and 7-9 respectively if the refs give them EVERY call as you state?

Bad calls happen across the NFL every week and it’s hardly to favor the Saints… What about the Hoculi call where he blew the play dead that was obviously a fumble in the SD/Denver game? What about the Miami/Minny game this week where the official signaled a safety when it was obvious to everyone but the ref that it was a TD?

You are an idiot of the highest order and just can’t deal with this simple fact…

Seen——You are hiram are funny. Neither of you know anything about football and every post proves it. Let’s see, the best you can come up with is the Saints scored 14 and 25 in two games. So, what you’re really pointing out is that Atlanta scored more points in one game than the Saints have all year. Can we use the same logic you do for saying our team will win? Let’s try it for fun. Atlanta scored 9 in the first game and 41 in the second. Let’s see, that’s an increase of 32 points from week 1 to week 2. So, if, as you suggest, that is the prevailing trend then Atlanta should score at least 73 thus making the Saints 35 seem kind of low; like your IQ!
Face it, it is just plain stupid for you to suggest that scoring more points in the second week means anything. It’s not like you’re playing the same team. The Saints had a hard time moving the ball against a weak Vikings secondary, struggled in every offensive facet against the 49ers. Yes, the Saints won both games. But they are looking a little more like the Kansas City Chiefs wins then last year’s Saints.
I will also point out that I have compared the Saints to the ‘08-’09 Arizona Cardinals all off season. I want to thank the Saints for proving me right thus far. Think about it. The Cards had a good offense, had gone to the Superbowl the previous year and a questionable defense. Oh and a Hall of Fame quarterback! But what did the Cards do last year? That’s right, they didn’t go nearly as far. It is starting to look like there is going to be a replay in New Orleans of the Cards. And it starts this week when those Dirty Birds expose your weak team!!!!

@Breesus….they tried desparately for years. 2008- I recall Brees padding stats in the last game trying to break the record for TY and getting lots of help on the way.

And no bad calls on the magnitude of giving a team a dead ball punt (very clear to everyone BUT the refs). Stinker homey calls happen EVERY WEEK in a Saints game. The Saints are now the ONLY team that consistently tries to pick up dead ball punts – Monday Night was not the first time that play has happened with the Saints involved.

The last few years have gotten to the point where we expect it. After Monday’s call I quit watching because the intended outcome is obvious and therefore the game not worth watching.

Nothing gives a team more confidence in beating another team, than to beat them over and over and over.

The falcants couldn’t beat a 3rd string QB, and they think they are now going to control Drew Brees, The Super Bowl MVP. They think cause they hit Derek Anderson, on a blitz, that they can do the same to Brees. LOL! Bring it!

It took them till the second game of the season for their starting offense to find the endzone, against the lowly cardinals, and now all of a sudden they proclaim they have become the “Hunter”. LOL!

Everybody’s looking at their stat books and extrapolating those numbers to foretell that the falcants will rise up and take the division. Who knows? Maybe, and maybe not.

You got brainless dingbats blaming the referees for making calls in favor of the Saints, and blaming the NFL for conspiring to give the Saints the Championship.

But just for the sake of consideration, what happens if the falcants win this week? They “rise up” to a tie for first place, at best in the division, probably a three way tie, cause it’s unlikely Tampa will beat Pittsburgh. What happens if the falcants lose? LOL! They “fall down” two games behind the division leader, in only the third game of the year! Quite a sobering possibility that will wake up even those sitting in the FrontRow wearing the falcant-colored, sissy glasses.

What happens if the Saints lose? They stay tied for the division lead. LOL! If they win? Well, that two game lead will seem impossibly unsurmountable, especially to those sitting on the “FrontRow” in the atlanta stadium.

Well, the “truth” is that the Super Bowl Champions are fairly adept at being lethal, efficient and affective “hunters” themselves….simply because they possess far better weapons.

This is the week to NOT ignore the Aints fans. This is the week to talk smack to those bayou boneheads who can’t help but lurk around a real teams fan blog.

Falcons D has given up 3 field goals in two games, and two, very flukey long runs over the left edge of the defense. You really think our coaching staff isn’t going to be all over that this week? Other than that, teams aren’t even moving the ball much against this defense. You can denigrate Dixon and Anderson all you want, but they don’t play offensive line and running back and wide receiver. We shut down offenses, not just one player. Saints haven’t stopped anyone on defense, Vikes and Niners stopped themselves. And you just lost arguably your most valuable offensive weapon. And you expect to somehow get better on offense?

Saints fans the fantasy ride stops right here. You are about to run up against the new NFC south champs, and don’t feel bad, cause everybody is getting some of this buzzsaw. Saints get 3 field goals and maybe one td. 31-16 Falcons. Believe that.
