Falcons fans have plenty to cheer about on the way to a 41-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals during 2nd half action at the Georgia Dome. Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com
Falcons coach Mike Smith was upbeat during his post-game press conference.
He was clearly elated with the 41-7 beatdown the Falcons put on the Cardinals.
No one in the locker room wanted to be on plane for New Orleans next Saturday with a 0-2 record.
Here’s what Coach Smith had to say:
OPENING STATEMENT: “Hey guys we talk all the time about starting fast, sustaining our level of intensity and our level of play for 60 minutes. We also talk about our ability to run the football and finish games. I thought it was evident today that we (followed) those three principles. I thought in all three phases of the game, we played well. With that being said, there are still a lot of things we have to get corrected. There were a lot of penalties. I think we had six penalties for 75 yards. Those are going to hurt you in close games. I was really pleased with . . . the men out on that field and the way they responded today. With that I’ll open it up for questions.”
ON JASON SNELLING: “What can you say about this guy. Over 180 total yards and three touchdowns. That just says a lot about the depth o this team . . . Not only running the football, but catching the football. I thought our offensive line opened up some nice holes not only for Jason, but for when Michael (Turner) was in there.”
ON TURNER: “When the score went the way it did there . . . we were not going to put Michael Turner back in the ball game. We decided to rely on Jason. Some of the things we had to do schematically, and formationally, we had to adjust because we only had two healthy running backs and one of them was the fullback Ovie Mughelli.”
MORE ON TURNER: “I don’t think it was significant. He was talking about going back in to the ball game. He was cleared to go back in. I don’t think it’s going to be anything significant. But I have yet to talk to the trainers. I have not had my post-game meeting with the trainers.”
ON THE DEFENSE: “I thought that our defense did some very good things. Again, we had an 8-man spacing issue. Again, when you give up an 80-yard run, it just absolutely chaps you. I know our coaching staff will get that corrected. We can’t be giving up those explosive plays in those situations. But all in all, it was good to see some of our young players play. William Moore in his first start, I thought that he was a very active player. He had that interception there (early) in the second half. That was a big, big series for us as a football team. . . I was very pleased with the way William handled his first action.”
MORE ON THE DEFENSE: “Through the first two games and this is a long season, it’s a defense that is learning. Coach (Brian) VanGorder and his staff I think has done a very good job in bringing these young guys along. When guys have to step up, the next guy steps up and does a nice job. But you can not give up those explosive plays. They are going to come back and eventually get you. They got us last week and this week we were able to overcome it. . . They are flying around. They are a fun group of guys to be around and coach. They have done a nice job through the first two weeks. We still have to become more consistent if we really want to be the type of defense that want to be.”
ON THIRD DOWNS: “0 for 8 on third down efficiency. Again this has been a subject of discussion in this room at other times. It’s always something that in the offseason and through the preseason, the No. 1 emphasis of our defensive staff is to be efficient on third down. Win third down and limit your exposure to offensive plays. When you limit you exposure to offensive plays it helps your chances, it enhances your chances of being successful. We’ve done a nice job in these first two ball games.”
ON THE PENALTIES: “It is a big concern. We want to play penalty free. . . We had two unnecessary roughness calls. We are going to play on the edge. I have to see the tape in terms of if it was a flop or an unnecessary roughness.”
ON THE BEATDOWN: “We did some things that were more characteristic of the way we play football. In terms of the way our guys played on the offensive side. That is playing a very aggressive style. Playing a very physical style. We were the tempo setters in the game today. I think that’s very, very important for any team that is going to be successful. They have to set the tempo and control the tempo.”
ON JERIOUS NORWOOD’S INJURY: “I don’t know (what the injury) was. It’s looked like something on the lower leg. He came off the field and we’ll have our post-game wrap up in the next hour or so.”
MORE ON SNELLING: “There were concerns. I don’t know that they were doubts. We are very confident in Jason Snelling and his ability to run the football. We had a package in place. We always have a package in place that if we went down to one back and it happened to be the fullback, we have plays that we can run and the protections we can basically operate with in the game. It was a concern, but I never really felt it was going to be an issue running the football. I thought our offensive line was the star of the game the way they set the tempo.”
ON OVIE MUGHELLI: “It was great to see Ovie run the football. Ovie is a guy who spends most of his time leading a ball carrier through the hole. It was good that Ovie had an opportunity to run the ball. I thought that he ran it very effectively. I thought that it shows that we do definitely have some depth on the offensive side of the ball as well.”
ON MATT RYAN: “Matt had three touchdown passes and a 117.3 quarterback rating. I thought that he operated more effectively. I thought that his accuracy was a little bit better in this ball game and when we asked him to do things in the no huddle sequencing he did a good job there. . . I thought that Matt did a very good job running the offense and operating within our offensive scheme.”
ON ERIK COLEMAN: “Coleman had a knee injury in the game last week and we made a game-time decision that he would not play.”

I was very impressed with the performance of Jason Snelling. The offense line did an excellent job blocking for the run and pass. Getting the running game going took some pressure off of Matt Ryan. While Matt showed that he did not have the excapability of Vick, he did a good job of spreading the ball around. The defense played an outstanding game except for the one big play by Arizona. Honestly I think this game began and ended with the domination the Falcons had on the line of scrimmage.
They give up a ton of weight but they crushed on offense. They smashed holes this week where nothing was there last week and they got down field too. I was very happy with the OL this week. I hope they can keep it up.
I still think we need more talent and beef on both LOS but overall. Man you had to love the holes that were being created today.

I would say I was impressed by Snelling, but not really. That’s what he does. He played his game today. Caught it well, ran it well. When the line plays well Snelling is a really good back. He’s shown those flashes before so I’m not really super impressed today, I expect him to do that when he gets the chance. Hopefully he made himself some money today.

Did not see game, just the highlights which were indeed highlights. William Moore contributed, Matt Ryan’s 117 rating, and the defense.
Looks like we have ourselves the makings of a top notch NFL defense.
Suddenly, we need a reliable scat-back and it will be good to have Jenkins back, but all in all this is a team and organization that has built itself from the ground up. We have spped, depth and excellent coaching.
I am on the band wagon. Dimitroff and Smith, keep doing what you are doing, I know you will get us there.
Great game Falcons, and now we have the Super Bowl champs. I am looking forward to the first of two meetings this year. Can we do it once? Twice? I will be very happy with a split.

Lets not put the cart before the horse. The Falcons looked ok, I think the Cards were just really bad today. Over 100 yards in penilitys. You can tell they are missing Kurt.Everyone needs to lay off Norwood, you can’t do what he does so don’t judge. So on to the next game, NO are not the cards and the Falcons are not playing like NO quit yet. I don’t think NO looks at out team with fear in there eyes. The D looked better today, 23, 25, 28,95,21 looked good even JA looked better than 71 today. He was being doubled all day.He still holds the run game in check better than 71.Our O is not going to scare NO D we still need speed on O

Michael Turner is playing like a guy who already has his millions in the bank and is putting forth just enough effort to get by and appear to be good. Watch the reruns of his plays…..he goes down easily and has no second effort. Watch Jason Snelling….the contrast in effort is startling. Jason runs through people to get extra yards. Last year Turner arrived in camp overweight and out of shape….he never got in playing condition….. supposedly because of an ankle sprain and now a mysterious groin pull. He should have more integrity than to take Mr. Blanks money and give a half hearted performance. Watch the film….its very easy to see. Its sort of like being on welfare or drawing unemployment….just claim the money and not work.

Tell me we can’t outrun and juke people out on the way to a touchdown, and I’ll believe you. But until his butt stays on the field and actually makes a difference, I don’t wanna hear it. Great speed on the gurney does us no good. And the Gurney is where he seems to stay.

Which team is this? The team that played like it did through 4 preseason games + @ Pittsburgh (2 offensive touchdowns total) … or the impressive offense that we all keep hoping, reading about and seeing glimpses of? Was it just the vaunted Pitt D that stymied the Birds O?
Defense looks less smoke/mirrors+bailing wire and perhaps like a legitimate D.
Next week’s game against NO won’t be a barometer … history has shown no matter how crappy of a team that NO or ATL fields in a given year, this is a rivalry that both teams play up to.
Will we see Jenkins back? Will Antone Smith (is he on the practice squad?) see some PT / back up Snelling?
Will we see the “consistency” that we hear coach Smith preach?!?

First, great photo of the fans DLed. A good win today, but the Cardinals also played terribly. It was good to see Ryan spread the ball around. Snelling was no surprise to all true fans. We’ve all known for some time that he should be starting over Jerious “Mr. Glass” Norwood. Defense is looking better every week. Now, our offense needs to have consisitency in their play each week – regardless of who the competition is. Tough game next week, but the Falcons will be ready.

All of us Falcons’ fans don’t have to worry about bad-mouthing Norwood this year, my guess is he’s done for the year! i can’t believe it myself, a hand tackle on his ankle and off the field in the INJURY CART! We all knew this would happen sooner than later as he has never stayed healthy for a season. Ok Antoine Smith, here is your chance to make a contribution with your speed, you’ll be activated from the Practice Squad this week and play against the arch rival Saints!
I was close on score, i guessed 34-13 good all around game by falcons, still i can’t figure out going no huddle with score 34-7! need to save that for close games!
One big problem is Ryan still looks at one receiver telegraphing his passes and almost had one picked off again. Also, Ryan doesn’t look confortable in the pocket either, seems to have a lot of indecision-hesitating on passing the ball. He needs to quit trying to be perfect and let the receiver make a play on the ball if closely covered. One game doesn’t make the season but shows us the Falcons the came to play against Arizona!
One more bigger problem is Mularky! He reminds me of the TV show: The Weakest Link! Offensively, just no fooling the other team and it showed again sunday, so lets just face it, we are going to have some losses from his play calling! Oh yea, Ryan threw one deep with score 34-7–(incompete) Way to go Mularky! Falcons beat the Saints next sunday after Saints play a rugged game monday nite against 49ers! Finally the scheduling is in our favor after last year’s fiasco. Always nice to see our Falcons win! makes mondays better!

I have to admit it, I agree with Ann on a few things. I am a Turner fan, but I swear he just doesn’t seem to have the burst or strength that Snelling does. If Turner can’t make the edge, he’s usually not gonna make any yardage, or even worse, he’ll be dropped for a loss. That just does not happen with Snelling. He busts through piles and he ALWAYS makes positive yardage. He does not tip toe at the line of scrimmage either. I know it sounds as if I’m bashing Turner, but I’m not. Just praising Snelling and pointing out a few observations. I hope that Jason starts getting more and more work because I feel that he makes our offense better.

However, its only one game…I sincerely hope the team plays with the same type of aggression and since of purpose as they displayed against the AZ the remainder of the season. That’s what its going to take to ascend to the elite level of the league.

WHO-DAT – As a lifetime Falcon Fan, it was hard for me to root for the Saints last year but I did and was very happy for them. I think both teams are going to do well this year and the division will not be decided until the very end – who knows? – we may even play three times this year! I do believe, however, this first game will be advantage to us with the Saints having to play tonight out West. Next Sunday – May the best team win!

Seen——You keep talking like the Saints can never lose a game. You say the Falcons are sorry and will get blown out. And, worst of all, you keep butchering the English language!
The Falcons played your Saints very tough, last season, and they have improved. If you watched the game against Pittsburgh, which has a much better defense than the Saints, you would have seen Atlanta’s offense gaining momentum as the game went into the fourth quarter. This week you saw the Falcons move the ball against a pretty good Arizona defense all game long. You would have also seen a defense that is really starting to gel and is closing teams down on third down. Certainly you’ll deny all of these points because you must in an effort to make your infantile claims about these Atlanta Falcons.
Tonight, we’ll see if the 49ers move the ball as easily as the Vikings did against the Saints defense. San Fran took Seatle lightly, last Sunday, because they were looking beyond them and towards the game in New Orleans. Don’t get me wrong, the Saints will win this game because of their offense. That is, after all, the only thing they have.

I hope everyone that was talking about Turner “tipping” through the “hole” saw what Pittsburgh did to Chris Johnson, he of the 2000 yrd season! Pittsburgh plays disciplined gap defense and has a wild card in Polumalu that has to, yet can’t be accounted for…
Let’s hope that we can have the full repertoire of tailbacks ready to go against NO, even if we don’t outside of two big runs in each of the games the D has looked very good! Even Dunta looked like he was ready to play…
SN The last play of the first half (the Hail Mary) when Robinson broke that up, the PA announcer at the game said, pass broken up by Chris Houston!! How horrible is that! We have to tighten up our football knowledge and understanding to become better fans and a better franchise!! Knowing when to make noise, not relying on a sign to push us to, and when the sign is off everyone getting quiet! Let’s make the Dome unbearable for other teams. I was sitting next to some goobers from East No Where GA, and I all they were worried about is where the beer guy was and where the restrooms are, and talking trash about Turner the whole game before I finally had to tell them he had 90 yrds, and wasn’t still in the game! ATL fans (and I am one) have a pretty low sports IQ but I guess it is a bi-product of our poor educational system, but that’s left for another section!

So, last week the comments were full of hundreds and hundreds of negative comments. Now there is a handful. Where are all these folks? Did they go back to the rust-belt after last weeks vacation in ATL?
Did the Falcons start a new QB this week? The QB last week certainly wasn’t the same one that was outstanding yesterday. Did some people realize the Steelers’ defense is exceptional? Is Dimitroff now not an idiot? Is Arthur Blank a good owner again? Is Mike Smith now a better choice than Whisenhunt?

FalconsFan284: I saw the falcant game against the steelers, and I saw a falcant offense that couldn’t find the endzone (no surprise there), and I saw a falcant defense that had a hard time stopping a 3rd string QB. And face it, yesterday, Derek Anderson is no Drew Brees.
Yesterday’s game against the cards was suppose to be a falcant win, your team was favored by as much as 7, so your blow out was a combination of beating a poor team, and a poor team beating itself. And yes, the cards are a poor team, the Saints proved that last January when they purlverized them when they had a high caliber QB at the helm.
Oh, and by the jerkwad, the vikings punted on every single possession they had in the second half against the Saints. Yeah, the moved the ball on the Saints, uh-huh.
@33TheBurner33: You banking on an extra day of rest? LOL! This is a practice game for the Saints. Just a tune up on national t.v. By the way, YOUR mother was real grateful last night.

It’s funny that the Falcons defeating the Cards is no big deal, to you, but the Saints barely getting by a struggling Vikings team shows your teams dominance.

If you think the Falcons can play at that level and win a SUPER BOWEL your crazy.I am a huge fan and all of you really don’t understand how to play football. Take away all the Cards penilitys and its a different game. Do you think the Falcons will bet NO with Baker having 3- 4 holding calls, Ryan looking at ther WR he is going to throw to?As i said before alot of players played well NOT ALL.Where was 55 ,71,94,53,20,50,33,83,88,87, do you understand what I am saying?I GUESS NOT HUH? Chucktown, how do u know that the people on this blog doesn’t know how to play football. What evidence of that do you have. The only proof that we have on this blog that tells us anything about the people posting on it is their writing skills, which you have none. You may want to learn how to connect words and make them into sentences before you start being critical of other people. Your spelling is atrocious so that is something else to work on. Also, I you are such a big fan then congratulate the team and move onto next week.

I’ve been saying for about a year now Jason should be our starter. And no one believed me 6 months ago when I said Omar Infante should play every day. Forget about Turner’s hype and his salary. Look at who has performed running and receiving for the second half of last year and so far this year. It’s Snelling. He’s on your roster. Just play him. He’s a nimble bone crusher. Turner is a one year wonder butterball.

The only difference between Snelling and Turner is their salary.

Frozen rope- the falcants destroyed the cardinals, get serious dude. The saints destroyed a much better cardinals team last year. The super bowl champs hung 45 points on a much better cardinals team then your team faced, so think again bud. Celebrate now, come sunday, you sorry falcants and it’s fans get to see what a real team looks like. To the ones thanking smack about how lucky the saints were last year, you can only hope the falcants can get that lucky to win 13 straight games in a row. You falcants fans are a bunch of HATERS, plain and simple. Call the saints the aints all you want, it want change the facts that we are the super bowl champs. Maybe some time in the distant future, you guys will see what it feels like to party with the Lombardi, (not). Isn’t Atlanta called looserville, due to it’s sports teams. I mean the falcants, wnba dream, braves, Georgia state, Georgia tech,Georgia bulldogs, all loose last week. If I lived in looserville I would not be so fast to throw stones at any other team or it’s fans. With that said, go win a super bowl then come back and run your mouths, until then stop being a HATER IN THE HOUSE.

Last week everybody on here was talking trash about how awful the falcants were. This week some of you are talking like the falcants just won the super bowl. Next week, you guys will be down on the falcants again, talking that same old stuff about how your team came close to beating the saints, you know like last year, only to get two losses hung on your team. Kudos to Snelling…I like the way you hit the holes with authority and don’t go down at first contact. Willie Mo is looking better and will get more comfortable as the season goes on. Hopefully the coaching staff lets him play…he can be a factor against the Saints. Loved the interception and the lick on Anderson. Even JA98 put a nice crack on someone yesterday. I know this was against the Cardinals and Anderson is not a premier QB, but they played aggressive on both sides of the ball for once. Let’s keep it up and bust up some Saints!

Oh, too funny. We beat the 49ers 45-10 last year (you remember, in our little “winning season” that you keep making fun of?). So where do you get the idea that they can throw us around like rag dolls?
The Saints beat them last night by a measley 3 points, after the 49ers gave the game away with the world’s dumbest punt receiving mistake. They still almost got you.
Just like NFL.com said, you’re living a charmed life.

Pittsburgh tested our offense in week 1….now our Defense will be tested in week 3.
Atlanta’s front 4 on defense will be the key. Win that battle and the Falcons will probably win that game.

I don’t know why you guys are questioning Turners effort. He ran for over 75 yards in 1.5 quarters of play what the hell else does he have to do?! New Orleans has had a hard time beating two average football teams. We avoid turnovers (and the refs actually start calling encroachment and pass interference on the Saints D) and we win Sunday. Just a side note… Is anyone else REALLY hoping that Andy Reid starts Kolb instead of Vick on October 17th when the Falcons visit Philly?

You talk about the Saints being such a great team but have they looked great this season? Come on, admit that Greg Williams is following the same formula he has in all of his other stops. The defense does well the first season and drops off, dramatically, after that.

Don’t know about the gayish part, but I defer that to you since you seem to be an expert at it.
Falconfant284: Our team picked up 4 turnovers last night, which has been the hallmark of Williams tenure in New Orleans. I dunno what he did elsewhere before he got here, don’t really care. But, whatever he’s doing, he’s making the Saints magnets for turnovers. Wasn’t it YOU who said our team wouldn’t get the lucky bounce anymore this year, that the Saints wouldn’t get 39 more takeaways? Well, seems like the Saints are more than on their way to besting that stat.
So, the question really should be, is your offense “turnover-proof”? I bet it’s not. Here’s the thing FF284, the Saints are 2&0, about to be 3&0.

You guys for the Saints like to make up alot of history concerning your heros. Like the Saints “resting their starters” in the second half last year in the Dome.
History reminder – Grimes picked Brees / Meachum clean only to get the Brees rule interference call and subsequet TD IN THE SECOND HALF. How can they do that from the bench?
Here is a bit to question your legitimacy – how in the he!! can the refs call Saints possession on a punt that no 49er touched? Only by the NFL Saints rule can that call be made and force the 49ers to use a replay flag.
Bottom line you will not get the NFL Saints rule next Sunday. You better take a look at the AZ game to see what is in store for your paper heros.

Operative word is “nasty”. I don’t know if the TV viewers know this but the Cardinals QB was forced to call time out because of some nasty layed out by #25 soon to be “Mr. Moore” as the result of an otherwise harmless 2nd down imcompletion. At that point, the game was OVER.

Hmmm, of course last year we opened up with Detroit and Philadelphia (without McNabb), this year we opened up with Minnesota and San Francisco, both who are now 0&2, but still arguably better than Detroit and Philadelphia were last year. So, arguing that a defense is going to get worse when you’re playing a better caliber of opponent is virtually self prophetic. Bottom line, we were 2&0 last year, and we’re 2&0 this year, about to be 3&0 on Sunday afternoon.

Yep blown call and it isn’t anyone but the Saints that rely on them. So much so that it can be predicted; I had no clue of the outcome last night because I quit watching when the refs gave the Saints the ball after some phantom “touch” that they never saw i.e. no reason to make that call at all.
After all, it is the Saints bench – players – fans that have there hands up in the air after EVERY incomplete pass. It was the Saint’s fan’s at the GA dome last year thanking the refs for the multiple gifts handed out in the Falcons loss. So, don’t push off on me what your own “Aints Nation” has grown accustomed to seeing.
All I’m saying is it won’t work this time. Remember, your “great” QB is the same QB that made Chevis Jackson look good not to mention a punching bag 49ers team that choked on their home opener.

Wrong hiramsaint the refs awarded the ball to the Saints for NO REASON. Only replay made the correct decision and the 49ers lost one of their replay flags in the process.
Ask yourself why? Because the Saints are the beneficiaries and the NFL knows they need all the help they can get.
FYI it happens EVERY SAINTS GAME. Last night was BLATANT; more times it’s suttle i.e. lopsided interference or lopsided holding calls.
That is why the Saints bench – players – fans COLLECTIVELY throw their hands up in the air on each and every incomplete Brees pass; since 2007 you all have become accustomed to the NFL help.
Looks to me like the NO blogs are starting to pick up on this. Unfortunatley, only a few of the Aints Nation saw the AZ smackdown so next Sunday will be a rude surprise.

Again I ask – how the he!! does a ref make a call that he clearly DID NOT SEE BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENED? Dude, it wasn’t even a bad mistake; more like blatant homerism.
Don’t worry, the Falcons already expect that type of treatment from the refs. Something about having the Saints near the top sells alot of Juicy Fruit gum.

HIRAMSAINT-after watching the AINTS’ SORRIER THAN LAST YRS 25TH RANKED DEF get pushed around by the 49ers Sunday, especially in the 2nd half, do you think they can do any better against what we put of Arizona? Face it AINT LOVERS, so far after 2 gms, that vaulted OFF that you rode to a Super Bowl win last yr has suddenly disappeared.
And to make it even worse, you’ve now lost RB RBush, your best overall player, although your OFF wasn’t doing too good with him. virtually all of your scoring came off 49er turnovers. As you well know, if that 49er rookie hadn’t tried to field that sideline punt, which he muffed, your BELOVED AINTS would be 1-1.
When Sunday’s gm is over, the high flying Falcons will make your BELOVED AINTS feel like they’ve just experienced the 2nd coming of KATRINA in the dome. No hiramsaint the obvious homey ref call was not rectified; the net result was the 49ers lost a challenge flag for no reason.
For whatever reason you want to equate a funny bounce into the ref seeing something that NEVER HAPPENED. The ref had no reason to make the call in the first place except to try and give the Saints an undue advantage.
My point is it happens EVERY GAME. In the Dome on Sunday the stadium was showing B Grimes intercepting Brees as a 2009 highlight; they left out the part where the ref threw the flag 15 seconds AFTER the play.
I can go on and on but we Falcons fans and now the rest of the NFL fans are starting to see the blatant homerism. The Falcons team is used to it and will prepare accordingly.
Leaving you with your bags and your “where’s the interference?” whine ringing all the way down Bourbon Street.
