The Falcons want all of those empty seats (red) full at kickoff time, 1 p.m. Not by 1:30 p.m. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/dledbetter@ajc.com)

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons are giving their typically late-arriving crowd some incentives to arrive early to the home opener against Arizona at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Georgia Dome.

The team will have food and merchandise discounts for fans who enter the Dome between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Over the last two seasons, the Falcons have gone 13-3 at home, but a large portion of the crowd is usually missing at kickoff. Falcons coach Mike Smith believes the team would benefit from the fans arriving early.

“We would love to come out of the locker room and see that place packed,” Smith said. “Our fans do a super job during the game, but it would be nice to get the juices flowing even before the kickoff.”

The discounted food options include a family plan with four hot dogs, four bags of chips, four sodas and four candy items for $40. There is also the combo plan, consisting of two hot dogs, two bags of chips, two sodas and two candy items for $20.

Fans will receive $10 off merchandise purchases of $50 or more and $20 off purchases of $100 or more at all Falcons365 locations in the Dome. The specials are available until 12:30 p.m.

“Our fans are some of the most vocal fans in the National Football League,” team president Rich McKay said. “Our new pre-game enhancements are simply designed to get the bulk of our crowd into the Dome earlier. Our goal is a simple one: by kickoff, we want the Georgia Dome to be a loud and intimidating place from the very start of our games.”

This doesn’t happen in Pittsburgh or Green Bay. What’s the problem? Why are Falcons fans always late? Will you enter the Dome early to get in on the discounts? Or should they have discounted beer and alcohol, too?

I’m not too worried if we will be there on time. I just hope the offense shows up Sunday.

Simple explanation. It’s more fun to tailgate for as long as possible, especially when everything inside the dome is so expensive. Maybe the discounts will help.

If they had discounts on beer, then I’d be there at 9am.

What time does the dome open for people to get in?

I’ll say this, when the dome is full and rocking it’s a LOT of fun for everyone.

The parking lots really aren’t THAT cool, are they?

Blue Fender is right. Reason the fans are so loud and vocal during the game is because they are out in the parking lot getting light up on cheap beer before the game. That and it usually takes me 30 mins to leave my tailgate spot before I actually get in the dome. Distance + huge line = late arrival. Give me 50% beer before the game and I am in a hour early

With the price of the gameday experience it makes sense people try and defray their costs by consuming in the parking lot. They need to focus more on enhancing the tailgate experience to get fans down earlier then you have a better chance of people not running in from Marta. Always hard with 1pm games when a lot of Atlantans are driving back from college games.

How about actually giving a performance that falcon’s fans can be proud of; instead of excuses, especially the “we need to execute better” of course you do, you have done anything to attract attention besides not scoring. You wish we get there on time and we wish for a touchdown. Why give up cheaper beer and better tailgating food to watch a non-scoring offense. More people will show up at kickoff if we know the defense is going to be on the field they actually make plays.

I hope there are sufficient people staffing the concession stands. The service is notoriously show as it is. Otherwise, I may need to wear pads and a helmet to get to my seat.

Look I am always at the game early, i tailgate. The birds needs to be worried about our horrible running game and our quarter back acting like a rookie of the year. The offense needs to show we lose this game and blank and company can forget any more sellouts this year. Time for us to dam blow the doors off a team. We need to open the flood gates like elite teams do, if we are to be an elite team like the pats, steelers, indy, saints etc.

Drink an extra beer or two at the tailgate instead of paying six-pack prices for a single beer. Hopefully, the offense will show up on time.

I’m no marketing genius but if you want that Dome rocking like it was in the play-off game against St. Louis in Jan 2005 then fire Mularkey and move away from running the wishbone offense!!!

Try getting the City of Atlanta to allow alcohol sales before 12:30 PM on a Sunday. I shouldn’t have to wait for the teetotalers to get out of church before I can buy a beer. That and it takes a good 20 minutes to get through security and find my seat.

I agree with joewhite. Enough is enough. The front office has to get serious about winning and it starts with the coaches we’ve got. Mike Smith need not worry about the fans and concentrate on getting his team ready to play. Every elite team in the NFL has a coaching staff that is committed to winning. Look at what New Orleans did in a few years. I have been a season ticket holder for the past 12 years and the only reason why I still keep the tickets is to get to see other teams play. The Falcons fall flat each and every year and it is dissapointing! This should be Mike Smith’s last season if they don’t make the playoffs. We may need to get Bill Cowher on deck.

Amen, to everyone one on the blog. The Falcons need to watch their own commercial and Rise Up to the occassion by scoring touchdowns and not having breakdowns on defense. There’s know excuse for the lackluster performance throughout the preseason or last sunday.

Atlantafan,

How bout you tell me the record of the Falcons at the Dome in the Smith era? They averaged well over 25 pts a game last season at home. Castles arn’t build with one stone and Football dynasties are not determined by one bad game. Walk away from the cliff, the Pittsburg defense is good.

Just Groovey,

Are you insane?????

“Look at what NO did in a few years?”

Do you have some sorta pot induced short term memory problem or did you forget that this Falcons franchise was as low as low can get for a team a mere 2 year ago when TD and SMith took over. Starting QB in Jail, Head coach leaves in the middle of the night, lack of talent and direction, etc. They went to the playoffs their first season when many picked them to win at best 2 games, they almost made the playoffs last year in rebuilding mode and broke that no back to back winning seasons nonsense. This year they are picked as an up and comer and half the experts are picking them to win the division (some even to the super bowl) over those same Saints you see mto love. Yet to you, a 12 year season ticket holder????? This isn’t enough? I mean fall flat each year? Really? Where they picked to finish 2 years ago and last year? Good lord we lost one game, go cheer for the Saints.

Vick is a circus quarterback who kills dogs. Yeah he is fast, but guess what it also requires discipline to be a qb. When you go scrambling around on every pass play it breaks up the offense assignments. Got to have the cajones to stay in the pocket and get some stitches in the chin but deliver the ball to the receiver and make the first down. Not only that but football is a TEAM sport, want individual recognize and that only maybe you want to take up professional bowling. Sick and tired of reading about Mike Vick on these blogs. Go write on a Philly wall.
