Woods, Valdez and Bush released by Falcons

Linebacker Bear Woods, offensive lineman Jose Valdez and safety Rafael Bush were released Saturday by the Falcons, according to their agents.
Woods, who played at Troy, was vying for the backup middle linebacker spot. He led the team with five tackles and a sack in the preseason finale against Jacksonville.
Valdez started at left tackle for the Falcons against Jacksonville. He was originally signed by the Falcons as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Arkansas on April 27, 2009.
He was released last season before he was signed to the Falcons practice squad on September 6, 2009. He was on the practice squad for the entire season.
If Woods, Valdez and Bush clear waivers, they could end up on the team’s practice squad.
FRIDAY
– Safety Eric Brock and fullback Dan Klecko was released by the Falcons on Friday, according to their agents.
Brock was on the practice squad last season. He went on the active roster on Dec. 22, 2009 after safety Antoine Harris was placed on injured reserve.
Brock was waived on Feb. 9 and was re-signed August 17.
ESPN’S Adam Schefter tweeted earlier in the day that Klecko was released before his agent confirmed the move.
The Falcons would not confirm any moves and said the roster moves would be released on Saturday.

Klecko, son of former New York Jets’ great Joe Klecko, was signed to a reserve/future contract by the Falcons in January.
Klecko was selected by New England in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. He’s played with New England, Indianapolis and Philadelphia.

With a salary cap, why should there by a roster limit? If you can manage the cap, you should be able to keep whoever you can afford. Certainly, it would be silly to hold on to 15 dudes who will never see playing time, but it could afford you some pretty nice depth at corner when you play in a division with the Saints without having to mold your roster to combat just them.
Also, I finally understand how William Moore has managed to stay so high on the depth chart without ever playing. Wow.

Dmirti Nance a lock? I would argue that Antone Smith has played better than Nance. I know Antone had a costly fumble last night but Nance fumbled against the Patriots. Smith has shown much more explosiveness. Nance had a couple very short TD’s runs in the first preseason game; however, it was Smith’s runs that got the Falcons to the goal line.

Trade Ryan Wolfe to the Arizona Cardinals for Matt Leinart, both teams win and Leinart gets a fair chance to compete. The same for Wolfe, this kid deserves a chance to play and the Falcons only see trade bait and practice squad because they think they are too deep at WR to give Wolfe more than a glance. Trade him to AZ and get a backup QB in the deal. The Cards need all the WRs they can sign to stay healthy with Anderson making the receivers streatch out if they want to catch those hot dogs with too much mustard on them. Anderson is way too emotional to control his touch on the ball and his receivers will pay the price with injuries. Leinart is a better fit for the #2 spot at the ATL than what is in the oven now. At least Leinart has had the experience of playing behind one of the the all time great QBs in NFL History. Kurt Warner has prepared Matt Leinart better than any coaching staff could have. While Ryan Wolfe will be a wasted commodity if he stays in Atlanta. A college great that warms the bench for guys with half the talent that he has. The Falcon coaches don’t know what they have, so trade him to a better situation for his talent to be utilized and get a quality backup QB in the trade for peanuts.

Some guys you see as ‘locks’ or ‘bubble’ guys are in reality easy to part with bodies that can be released if they find somebody they like better being released by another team. I think this year is Anderson’s make or break year. He plays poorly again and I can see him gone in a NY minute.

I could not imagine any scenario resulting Matt Leinart coming here. Even if he was free. He is not better than the 3 QBs on the roster and doesn’t fit the organization. Also why would AZ trade for someone available off waivers…

There are only 3 specialists, not four. I think Walker, Williams and Jackson make the roster from your “bubble” players.

valdez looked really good last night. he looked better than baker. i dont think he got a false start penalty either. and tell me why we need leinart again. redman has done better than he will ever do. chevis jackson is terrible and needs to be traded or cut. antone smith is done for, he could not recover after he fumbled. he couldnt even come down with a kickoff after that. if bergeron pulled down that TD he would have for sure made the team, not so sure now. that was a perfectly thrown ball. and the TE palmer should be a lock after what i saw last night, goodbye zinger/peelle. other than that the D looked great until that smith fumble. the jags couldnt even get a 1st down until then. anderson moore and weatherspoon looked solid.

I agree with your analysis except I would say Willaims and Jackson (CBs) are long shots. In fact if you had a category called “Out the Door” I would put them there. Williams looked as if he couldn’t carry himself on that knee very well and Jackson lacks speed, especially downfield.

Agree 100%. Go with 4 RB’s and at least 5 corners on the roster, meaning Williams or Jackson is a lock. There are only 3 specialists, but I think they keep Romberg over Walker.

kreedham – Yeah, but people can be signed by other teams off your practice squad. Or before they’re even able to make it there for that matter. I think getting down to 60 wouldn’t even include too many hard choices. But roster spots 54 to 58 are probably pretty rough. Just something that never made sense to me in the salary-cap era.
Either way, moot point. I forgot that there was no salary cap this season. Heh.

Palmer instead of Zinger (blocking is not everything – need a pass catching TE for Gonzo to mentor this year). If Palmer goes to PS, I bet he gets poached away. Too much goodness on film already.
Hope they can keep Valdez – you know ’short-arms’ Baker is going to get injured again and miss time.

I agree, keep Valdez, but he’s a guard, so all of you saying keep him because of Baker, Baker’s a tackle, they already have his backup. I say keep valdez and dump “what’s the snap count again” Blalock. Play Johnson or Valdez in his spot. Blalock is the reason Ryan has to run for his life.

I don’t think 8 is the correct number for the entire secondary.
The norm would probably be 4 safties and 5 corners – although some players (like Williams), can play either.
If Brian is healthy, I can’t see the Falcons cutting him in favor of Chevis. If they decided to go with 3 safties and a swing man – Shillinger would lose out. Jackson’s only other chance would be, if for some reason, they decided to carry 6 corners.

Once T.J Houshmandzadeh is cut from Seattle, the Falcons need to sign him ASAP. Seattle will owe him whatever is left on his contract after the Falcons or any other team sign him for the league minimum, so there’s not much of an investment here for a decent wr upgrade.

We need to sign a WR. The offense is to predictable, our # 2 WR puts no fear into the opposing team. I talked to a friend on mine who is close with some members of the saints and they say the Falcons are too predictable on offense and if you take away Roddy White and Tony G no other Wr is capable of making game changing plays. I tend to agree. We need TJ Houshminzada or we could have gotten Patrick Crayton for a 7th rd. pick.S.Diego stole him. Most 7th round picks do not even make the team. I think Dimitroff has made some good moves, but I think he may be passing over alot of talent because of character concerns. I know that plays a part, but this damn franchise is starving for a championshp calliber team. We need to get people in here to help win. No NFL team has never been given a super bowl trophy because of character, they are given the trophy because of talent!!! I am sick and tired of the Falcons being pretenders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Housh is definitely an interesting possibility. He’s an established possession receiver. Because of his contract clause, the Seahawks are on the hook for the difference between his old salary and whatever he gets now. I hope they at least seriously think about it.

Theriddler, thanks for telling it like it is! i have been saying this all preseason long that we need a bona-fide #2 WR, hopfully Jenkins can come back from injury and step up and have a big year for us. M.Ryan needs to throw more to him and get him involved with some quick throws early, Ryan tends to look for Roddy and Gonzo too much and thus defenses are keyed in on them, especially on Gonzo on 3rd down. Wolfe and Strickland should be given strong consideration for the last receiver spot, Bergeron and Harvey should be CUT after watching them against the Jags. Harvey looked like a high school player out on the field with his mistakes. Also, running back A.Smith needs to go and Nance also, neither has the size or can hold onto the ball for the NFL

Yeah there’s no one on here that could give me a good reason why we shouldn’t go get T.J.! He’s a PROVEN VET, GOOD LOCKER ROOM GUY, NO CHARACTER ISSUES, & DEFINATELY A LAGIT # 2 if not a # 1! But what’s worse, if we don’t get him another NFC team will!!! Just imagine we refuse to get him & the Vikings go get him & have him as the piece that gets them to the SB bc Rice is out half the year & TJ steps in & they don’t miss a beat! The Bucs just cut M. Clayton as well, so if the $ issue keeps us from going after T.J. which it shouldn’t (bc you have to be willing to show some cash for worthy causes in this league to win & T.J. is that!), we could pick up Clayton for very little & still upgrade at Wr. Crayton would have been great but we missed out on that, let’s get T.J. or Clayton front office! We need the upgrade, you saw that in Gonzo, now see it again!

Don’t NEED a new receiver. Our current roster of receivers are good enough. If the Falcons *do* decide to pick up T.J. I’m certainly fine with that, but, my personal opinion is that one extra receiver will not make the team any better than it currently is. Again, if that is who the coaches want, I’ll support him. If not, I’ll continue to cheer for my Falcons, anyway. I think it’s a bit simplistic to assume one receiver will bring this team a championship. Either they are there now or not…we’ll find out.

Man! Am I glad some of you guys above aren’t in charge of the Falcons team!
I believe another team can pick up a player the Falcons release today if they do it promptly before Sunday’s naming of the 8 Taxi Squad(the old name) Falcons.

There are two players the Falcons might release whom I think would be immediately picked up by another team – Valdez and Palmer. They’re showing lots of potential and are to good to lose. They both looked very good against the Jaguars second team. Valdez at left tackle was impressive. Given Baker’s injury habits, it might be wise to have a third man (Valdez) who can play left tackle. If fact he seems to have the talent and size to play anywhere but center. Zinger stands a better chance of making it to the taxi squad than Palmer, so release Zinger and make Palmer the 3rd TE.

Remember 1 more game has us in there? i.e. The Giants game…..& to clarify bc some bloger make it seem as if anyone who wants a few changes made aren’t Falcons fans, I’ll support the Falcons regardless of what they do, bc I’m a true fan! & a fan is a fan, that’s it cut & dry, but all ya’ll acting as if we don’t NEED, not want but NEED an upgrade at the # 2 Wr position particularly are killing me & the delusions are sad honestly! Still don’t see one receiver (who’ll come in late, play very little at the start while he’s learning the playbook) is going to put us over the top. I’ll stick with the coaches choices. Also, I think Douglas will be a major contributor this year.

The Seattle Seahawks has cut wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, a team source told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen. The Seahawks signed Houshmanzadeh to a five-year, $40 million contract last off-season, and Seattle will wind up having paid him $15 million for his one season with the Seahawks.
The 32-year-old Houshmanzadeh caught 79 passes last season and will be a bargain for another team this season.

I mean he just had an off year & caught 79 balls. Your right Douglass will a major contributor, but from the slot. They might line him up at the 2 spot for a minute but he’s a true slot Wr.

The problem last year wasn’t losing games by one dropped pass or one missed field goal. The real problem was defense. While the Falcons did a decent job of stopping the run, they couldn’t stop the pass. We lost the games because our defense couldn’t slow the better quarterbacks down. Especially on third and long, we were creamed. Several touchdowns from opponents occured on third and long. Hopefully, that area will be fixed this year. Again, if the Falcons should decide that they can use T.J.’s services, I’m sure he would be productive in the receiver rotation.

I agree that the D was a big problem but if you drop a winning TD at the end of a game, then that drop cost you the game! You can slice it however you want 2 but that drop cost us that game regardless of what else happened bc if he catches it we win, THAT SIMPLE! So Ill have to respectfully disagree with you on that one.
