JACKSONVILLE – Gil Brandt, of Sirius NFL radio and NFL.com, is all-in on the Falcons.
On Sirius NFL Radio last night, while talking to Dr. Falcon on the air, he announced that he’s selecting Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to win the NFL’s MVP award.
“I think he’s going to be a big factor in the success of that team,” Brandt said on the Late Hits show.
Brandt, the longtime former personnel man with the Dallas Cowboys, said he had to write a piece for NFL.com and in the article he picking Ryan.
Last season, Peyton Manning won the award for a record fourth time.
“I won’t be a bit surprised if Atlanta wins the NFC South,” Brandt said.

Gil Brandt is correct about one thing: Matt is going to be a big factor in the success of the falcons. With that said, the Falcons may be in trouble.

CJ – anyone making contrary predictions hasn’t been keeping up with the Falcons. Which happens to be the majority.
Remember right after the SB last year, when the “experts” blew up a bunch of balloons with team logo’s on them & then started popping them with pins. All those experts didn’t even have the Falcons in the top 15 much less on the playoff bubble. Now half of them have us winning the division over the Aints.
What changed? What changed is guys like Gil Brandt were contradicting them & deep inside they know not to go against guys like him. The media are nothing but copycats & bandwagon jumpers. They see someone of respect like Brandt say early on that he believes the Falcons will do great, win the division, make the playoffs, etc. etc. and like lemmings they change their tune & start saying the same thing. But to not look like idiots, they exagerate little things & make non-issues into issues. They stupidly look at preseason stats & use them as a basis for predicting a team or player’s season.
Fact is, Gil Brandt knows more about this game than 99% of the ignorant media could dream of knowing. And the vast majority of his predictions, which he doesn’t give very often, end up coming true.
Just wait & see. Week 8 when the Falcons are 7-1, all these experts will purposely forget popping Atlanta’s balloon & the fact that Gil Brandt was telling everyone back in April how good the Falcons & Ryan were going to be, & they’ll claim they were one of the few who knew it all along & pat themselve on the back rather than credit Brandt.
You’re following the lemmings, friend.

Ryan is good. That’s it. He’s just good, not great, not an MVP, just pretty good. The Falcons are a grind it out, smash mouth, defensive team that is capable of winning big if the QB can manage the game. He’s not going to win the MVP, but he might win a Super Bowl.

AH….. no MVP award for him. With Turner in the backfield Matt’s passing numbers won’t match Brees or Peyton’s or Brady’s….. so no chance of him throwing for 4500 yards and 30+ TDs.

Some people just can’t handle prosperity. They’re like the guy who wins the Powerball and blows it all on scratch-offs. We’ve finally got a young QB with MVP potential, but some “fans” would rather see him fail so they can say “I told ya’ so” than see him take this team to the bigtime. Too many negative Nancy-boys on here with half-full glasses. Here’s hoping ol’ Gil is right as rain…..

Our Offensive Line is healthy and better. Another year together. I just hope they stay healthy. With Michael Turner’s dedication to making himself the best back in the league and Matt Ryan’s obsession with film study I see no reason why Matt Ryan won’t be Offensive MVP this season. I will never forget when one reporter here (Moore) complained because we went with the white QB and not the black DB in the draft. He said it was shameful and that he could not get behind the Falcons on that pick. Glenn Dorsey was the player. This news outlet let Moore write his anti white thoughts for years. Complaining because we went with Greg Maddux over Barry Bonds. But, if anyone believes Dorsey was the correct pick, let us know and why.

I concur with Jim. All this preseason hype makes me nervous. I’d much rather they quietly take care of business under everyone’s radar in a professional manner and leave the gaudy stats to Brees, Rivers, Manning & Brady. I know Blank needs to fill seats but expectations haven’t been kind to the birds in the past. The first string only needs to play for one series in Jacksonville before giving way to the fray of frantic hopefuls.

Sorry but this one won’t happen! Sorry but Ryan is one of my worries on the team, not that he’s not a good Qb, because he is, he’s actually better than just good, he has the potential to be great, but he’s just not there yet! Maybe during his 5th season i could see this as a true statement but right now…….he hasn’t done anything or progressed nearly enough 4 someone to make such a bold statement as that.
I like Matt but his completion percentage, decision making, & thus INT’s are far from what they’d need to be for him to win MVP, not to mention with the lack of a true # 2 wr, it’s just not gonna happen! I believe the Birds win the NFC South but no disrespect, i think in some ways it happens in spite of Matt & not because of him! He turns it over too much & in the clutch 2 & as i said the completion percentage is far to low, his TD to INT ratio has to be more than 2 to 1 & he’s yet to do that yet, & if he is going to win the MVP, it’ll need to be more like 3 to 1 or even 4 to1. Those are HUGE jumps in a year to make & nothing he’s done in the preseason & our inability to upgrade our wr core lead me to believe that this will happen! Right now Matt’s not even a top 10 QB in the league. Top 15 yes, but not top 10, he’s still got a lot of work to do! I’ll just be happy if he proves himself to be in the top 10 this year & upgrades like that honestly.

The Falcons have as much of a complete team as any other in the league. I like M. Ryan and his bearing as a good person and hard worker. Sometimes I wondered during the 11-5 season was Chris Redmon a better QB. Ryan is the future, but I think Redmon has a bit of Brett Favre in him. If I am not mistaken, Roddy White had his 1st 1000 yrd year prior to Ryan being drafted. He looked very much in control on his TD drive against Miami and his passes were mostly crisp and on the mark. Without question the Falcons are a solid QB away from winning the SB. I believe M. Ryan has the potential to take us there, but Redmon may be the better passer right now.

It’s funny how someone has an opinion then others blast him for it. How many of you “experts” picked Jose Bautista to hit over 40 HRs this year? There are always surprises in very league of every sport. So, let the guy have his opinion and prediction. As predictions go, nobody will remember it if it doesn’t happen, but if it does, he looks like the genius.

I believe the Falcons have sufficient players to win big, I just do not believe they have the schemes or schemers to do it. Matt Ryan is very good I just do not see him as great. The team has a few other players that can match up solid with just about any club. One star does not make a team.

Well said Wayne. It seems some folks buy their season tickets so that they can pull for the other teams. I’ve never seen anything like it.
I don’t understand why people in this city can’t get behind their teams and those teams’ players. Matt Ryan is a stud NFL QB, and we’re lucky to have him. There are very few teams in the league who wouldn’t gladly give up their starting QB if they had a chance to have Matt behind their center.
I guess many here would love it if we had MV#7 back because he had a cannon for an arm but couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn w/ it. Heck, that’s even when he decided that he should throw instead of trying to make every play with his legs. Unbelievable!
Honestly, I think a good many that post here have no clue of what it takes to win in the NFL.

Nique, I wasn’t trying to bash MV#7 to boast MR#2. The point was that having a cannon for an arm doesn’t make that person a great QB. But you’re right, that’s in the past, and I’ll leave it there in all future posts.
I will say this, all Matt Ryan has done since coming in here is work his butt off, help win games, help turn a 3-13 into an 11-5 team in his rookie year, help take us to the playoffs in his rookie year, and help break a 43 year curse of never winning back to back seasons. He’s accomplished those things in just two years in the league. Makes me smile from ear to ear knowing where this team can go in the next few years.

Hey, It could happen. I think it’s safe to safe that MR2 is not going to get any worse, and that is a very good outlook for the Falcons. Dude is not going to start losing games for us. So all he has is upside. And the upside is that if Turner starts racking up the yards, safeties start cheating up to the line of scrimmage. No reason why Matt and the WR cannot find plenty of ways to exploit that. If our defense can finally get the other team off the field, so they have the tired defenders instead of us, there’s no reason why MR2 AND THE WR

Hey, I got an idea, lets stop ignoring the fact he’s only entering his 3rd year & give him the credit he’s due. He’s got better or as good of stats & record after 2 seasons as the most elite QB’s in this league had their 1st couple seasons.
Or, you can feel like an idiot in the future when he’s winning the MVP again & going to his 2nd Superbowl. Whatever floats your boat.

Pre-season means squat guys. Wait ’til the real season before you start bashing the guy.
My biggest worry for this team this year is Matt Bryant. We lost 2 games and possibly 3 last year due to place kicking. I hope Matt Bryant shows more in the season than he did pre-season (and, yes, when it comes to place kicking what happens in the pre-season is relevant).

I think this is like the 9th or 10th article this offseason in the AJC about how great Matt Ryan is and what an epic season he is going to have. This makes me very nervous as a long suffering Falcons fan since ‘89. I remember the hype machine on the AJC after the Super Bowl season. The team crashed and burned at a pitiful 4-12.
Let’s take a chill pill, Media Peeps. The dude is only in his 3rd year and there’s no doubt he’s an up and comer with serious upside. But he has enough pressure on him already without all these articles and people hyping him up to be the next Manning or Brady.

It’s all well & good to compare him to those elite QB’s in their 1st two years but none of them were ready to win an MVP at that point in their career’s nor the next year either. In fact Peyton, as great as he is, didn’t win his 1st MVP until YEAR 6, Brady YEAR 8, & Brees has never won 1 (even those lets be honest he’s probably deserved it the last 2 years & has been robbed by those drinking the Manning kool-aid). So comparing to the elite Qb’s in the league well before they became MVP type players is all well & good, & honestly it’s a good sign, but the fact still remains it holds no validity to the claim that Ryan will win the MVP this year which is the statement in ?. I am by no means a Ryan hater & i love the support but sorry BeefATL72 the argument & the facts fall short on this one!

On to news that could help this prediction.
CBS reports that the Cowboys are set at wide receiver. Dez Bryant, Roy Williams, Miles Austin is a bona fide No. 1. & Kevin Ogletree, while inconsistent, shows great acceleration and change-of-direction quickness as a catch-and-run weapon. This stability translates to insecurity for Patrick Crayton. As in job insecurity. Tim McMahon of ESPN Dallas says that Crayton is on the trading block. And, if there are no takers, the veteran could simply be cut Saturday night.
So the ? is do we take atvantage of this??? Gosh i hope we do, it’ll be after they place Meier on IR like Smith said, so why not go after it? It helps us at Wr giving us a legit # 2 & in the PR game.

Don’t be shocked if next year he’s still without a playoff win. He looks like the second coming of Marc Bulger to me, and maybe not as good after two seasons as Bulger was. Matt Ryan is not even close to MVP material. I think Falcons fans should ignore Gil brandt on this one. In the NFC look for Aaron Rodgers as a MVP candidate. That makes sense. Coming out of the AFC , I would never bet against Peyton Manning.
Think about the Falcons having to deal with these three defenses. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Baltimore this season. You should pray that Matt stays vertical.

I think atlanta people are underestimating what our team can do this year. Ironically, the national media isn’t underestimating them. The falcons stood their ground with a dominating force last year. Not once, but twice. Is this team perfect? No. But they are one of the best home teams in football, have one of the weakest schedules in football, and can only improve from last season. I picked them 9-7 last season, and I predict 12-4 this season.

MVP? I just don’t see it.
Given, you can’t help but cheer for Matt Ryan with his commitment to the game and how much of a nice, genuine individual it seems like he is. However, I don’t care how hard you work or how nice you are if you don’t produce results. And, unlike a great many Falcons fans, I won’t let Ryan’s likeable qualities disguise the fact that he’s still a long way off.
This year will be exceptionally telling for Ryan in that respect. Can he be decisive? Can he compensate for his lack of zip by getting rid of football more quickly? Can he cease to run into the pass rush? I hope so. Our season depends on it.

Umm…I’m happy that the Falcons are on everyone’s radar screen and expectations are high, but this Brandt pick makes no sense. Did anyone actually look at NFL.com today? He projects Aaron Rodgers to win OPOY, and for the Saints to win the NFC South. So…how exactly does he then come to the conclusion that Matt Ryan will win MVP? Seems like logic wasn’t part of his equation, as much as I am a Falcons fan and Ryan supporter.

Outside of ajc readers, nobody in other areas of the nation would have a clue about who Mattyice is!
Wrong. Apparently a lot of Saints fans seem to know. They show up here often enough….

C’mon man! Are you kidding me! You are trying too hard to manufacture a hero. I can name ten QBs in the league that Matt Ryan’s not fit to be their water boy. Manning, Favre, Shaub, Brees, Rivers, Rogers, Brady, McNabb, Manning, Romo, Roethlisberger. Matt’s has NEVER been rated in the top 10 NFL QBs. He’s second tier at best based on performance thus far.

BeefATL72: Do you think the Falcons record over the last three years is because Ryan showed up or that the team finally has a decent coaching staff? Jim Mora, Bobby Petrino????

Big Ray, I guess that must make them(Saint fans) ajc readers. Remember that Atlanta has become much like many Florida cities where most everyone is now from somewhere else. These residents are fans of other teams in all sports and not at all loyal to the Falcons, Braves, etc. Additionally, many Gulf South residents have transplanted to this melting pot that we call Atlanta, hence bringing many Saints fans to the ATL. Atlanta will probably always have as a high a percentage of sports fans not cheering for the home team as nearly any other city in this country. Don’t expect that to change!

Brandt has lost his mind. While I pull for the Falcons there is no way Ryan is even close to MVP caliber. Flacco is closer to that in my opinion. Ryan is a nice leader whose talent is more complimentary than dominant.
When I think MVP I think dominating talent and performance. If anything, and if healthy, Turner is the MVP candidate on this team.

Breeze is the man! Matt Ryan is good but just doesn’t have the natural talent that DBreeze has. The Saints will march again!

Matt Ryan is a good QB but not great. He doesn’t have the arm to make all the throws. His work ethic will take him a long way in being a successful QB in this league.
