Falcons waive OL Ortmann, CB Derricks

The Falcons waived Mark Ortmann.

The Falcons waived Mark Ortmann.

The Falcons released offensive lineman Mark Ortmann and cornerback Gabe Derricks on Saturday to move their roster count down to 77. The team must cut down to 75 by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Ortmann, 6-foot-6, 284 pounds, was signed by the Falcons as a free agent last Monday. Ortmann was originally signed as a rookie free agent by the Carolina Panthers on April 24, 2010. He was later waived on June 17, 2010.

Derricks, 6-3, 202 pounds, was originally signed by the Falcons as a rookie free agent on April 26, 2010. He was waived on July 31, 2010 and later re-signed by the team on August 15, 2010.

Here a story on how the roster is shaping up.

DOL, first of all, thanks for keeping us up to date. Secondly, of the two long-shot RB, who would you say has the better shot of moving up and maybe hanging on?

No chance Palmer beats out Zinger for TE, rather than risk losing him from on the practice squad?

Falcons look good against weak teams which moves them to the upper 1/3rd but the Pats showed them that they aren’t ready for the big boys yet.

It is hard to beat the big boy teams like the Pats, when a team has to play against 18 men on the field at all times(of course I am referring to the Pats+the NFL officials).

Dude got 30 mins which was 29 more than he deserved. Anyway when are you guys going to get tough on the “chosen one” aka Matty Ice aka Matt Ryan aka Mr. Non-production. I know its preseason but dude has been horrible and dont think he’s just gonna turn it on in week one, were playing the Steelers and if Turner doesnt have a big game…were toast.

thanks for the link ma
d-led-
sorry but chevis is any thing but a lock, he’s gone and b. williams is in because of his his versatility.

if i was in control of the d-line i would cut c. davis before ja98. but we all know both will make the squad.

recievers: white, jenkins, douglas, weems, finneran, bulgeron, nuff said

rb:: (dream team) turer, norwood, snelling, mughelli, smith

the end, p.s spoon wil start at strong side, the shift to weak mid season when peterson tires out

Seems we should look for depth for our WR position. Maybe Falcons put Williams on PUP, if possible, and give him more time to heal. I like what I’m seeing on defense. Wonder if Smith’s eye has been taken off the offense too long. Seems Falcons are too dependent on Tony G and should be foucused on pushing ball further down field.
I would bite the bullet and dump DE John A. Seems way over the hill.

Reggie,

The degenerate cesspool, Vick, is gone forever–accept this!

As for Ryan, if Vick’s butt buddy, Roddy White, could catch perfectly thrown balls Ryan would have looked a whole lot better, especially adding a second TD pass in the first half when White had the perfectly thrown ball go right between his hands.

Were I Matt Ryan and I had to throw a 4th down pass to win a game the last person on this team I would count on to catch it is Roddy White! He’s good for 1-2 drops per game and we’ll certainly lose one or two games this season win he continues his streak of dropping a game deciding pass.

Bama Falcon,
I have to disagree with two of your points.
I see Williams making the roster because he can play safety as well as CB and his veteran leadership is needed in a mostly young group.
Bite the bullet and cut Abe, is a bad idea, Sidbury has shown promise but he is not there yet.
With the improved interior of the D-line, Abe`s production will be up plus, it looks like teams are going to have to start doubling on Biermann on the other side, giving him more opportunity to flourish.

M.Ryan doesn’t look good because of all the dropped passes, White needs to be more focused and put on his game face in the pre-season, way too much laughing and goofing off on the sidelines during the games which means he isn’t focused(read Ryan’s comments again and get the real message he is saying). TE Palmer should get the nod over Zinger, he hasn’t dropped any passes in the games he’s been in and is a BIG target to throw to!, only way to groom Palmer is to play him in real games. Heck, on the tackle positions, Trey Lewis is back!, he should be starting and the rest vying for a roster spot, he has been a force inside and consisently disrupted the other team’s backfield! Also, Boy, can W.Moore hit when tackling! now if he can stay healthy, that’s a big if, we could have a run stopper from the safety position that hits like a linebacker. The most important player for the running game and the offense is going to be J.Norwood, we have to have that outside speed and straight line speed on runs, screens and swing passes to compliment Turner, this is a must-have for the offense to be explosive. All and all, i predict 11-5 with favorable schedule this year!

can’t believe D-Led is showing Klecko as a lock at running back. We already have Mughelli as fullback and Snelling can back up both tailback and fullback. Norwood is good when healthy but his upright running style won’t allow him to be on the field enough to contribute. A. Smith should get a shot as the change of pace back behind Turner and Snelling. If Smith can get past the d-line he has the Warwick Dunn moves and much better speed that Dunn. He can also catch out of the backfield. D. Nance would be a good practice squad player.

And bite the bullet and cut J. Abraham, get real. He’s by far our best veteran and I see him having a very good year.

Ryan does need to tighten up. He looked awful Friday night. Probably the worse I’ve seen him look to date. And I do think he needs to look to spread the ball around more. Teams will double on Roddy on one play and Tony on another so he’s going to have to start hitting his 3rd and 4th options and work out the kinks with the running backs in the screen passes. Turner won’t last if we have to run him 25 plus times a game.

Oh, I tried to get better coverage of the Falcons and I seem to have found another outlet. Pull up the newspaper for the team we are scheduled to play the upcoming week or for review after the game and you’ll get much better coverage than what the AJC beat writer provides. I can’t believe they allow such inferior work to be published.

The kicker situation still worries me, I don’t have a lot of confidence in this guy. Every time he misses the kick, he glares at the ground and the look on his face seems to be confused and dumb founded. He missed the extra point!??? I can say if the field goal needs to win the game… we’re screwed.
