Dunta Robinson was expected to make his Falcons debut against Miami. (Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com)
MIAMI – Cornerback Dunta Robinson, the Falcons prized offseason acquisition, was a late scratch from the lineup against the Miami Dolphins on Friday.
Robinson, who’s been nursing what has been termed a minor hamstring injury, was expected to play in the all-important third exhibition game.
“We made a decision and as I said all week long — really over the last eight or nine days — all the players that are injured are going to be game time decisions,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “We thought it was just best to hold Dunta out. Anybody that has been to our practices knows that he has been a full participant in all of our practices. We just felt like it was in the best interest of our football team for the regular season to hold him out.”
Christopher Owens took Robinson’s spot in the starting lineup opposite of Brent Grimes.
Robinson was signed to a six-year, $57.5 million contract as a free agent. He hurt his hamstring trying to run down an overthrown pass early in training camp.
Wide receiver Michael Jenkins (shoulder), guard Mike Johnson (knee), defensive tackles Corey Peters (knee) and Thomas Johnson (Achilles) did not play.

I’m just hoping to see both the offense (at least score a touchdown) and the defense (get off the field on 3rd downs) play better than they have in the first two preseason games.

Thomas Dimitroff and Mike Smith knows best what the strengths and weaknesses are, therefore I will not try to tell them. However it would do them well to pick up a Wide Receiver if they can. I am less confident in Roddy than most other Falcons Fans seem to be, because he does not get enough separation, and that could result in balls thrown to him been intercepted.

Dear Saints People who continually haunt the ajc falcons blog. Thank you for thinking of us. We in turn do not feel any desire whatsoever to spend and/or waste time on your blog- assuming your media folks possess the technology to have a blog. Congratulations on winning the super bowl…last season. I look forward to the upcoming season. If the past serves as any indicator, regardless of your superbowl win, to assume that these Falcons are somehow inferior and your Saints are infallable…scratch that, please assume that the foregoing is true. Again, I look forward to the upcoming season.

We need to be realistic. I know everyone keeps saying we are not gameplanning for these games on D but what about our offense. We have not put the ball in the end zone yet with the starting unit, did anyone watch the Packers vs Colts last night ? Talk about offenses looking like they were in midseason form, wow ! We need to get Matt in some type of rhythm by the first game, because without Big Ben I think that Pittsburgh is going to throw the kitchen sink at us with their defense.
I just hope our defensive guys stay healthy, get some good reps, & have a better showing than last week. I keep hearing about us picking up another WR, what gives this should have been addressed beforre we got this close to the first game. In my opinion we have been thin at that pos. for the last 5 yrs. Go Birds hope we put a couple in the end zone tonite !!!

O doesn’t look bad . . .. .Ryan has a TD – but also a couple of passes that were a few inches behind or overthrown. Here’s my take on Ryan so far in his career.
If he continues to play like this…he will be an average starter.
I have seen enough of him to believe he SHOULD be able to make the throws.
What is happening to him is a combination of things.
His receivers not being the best…
his O Line being undersized and not good pass blockers…
his own tendency for happy feet…
These things have put him where he is.
Should he get one more decent receiver and an O Line…his stock will rise.

The Falcons Brass can’t be happy with what they are seeing, just as we are not happy. I will again say our number 1 Receiver is a number 2 or 3 on most other NFL Teams. Mark you it was not a good throw by Ryan, but he does not fight for the ball like a Receiver should do, Neither does he get enough separation, so balls thrown to him are likely to be intercepted. I will bet that 75% of interceptions thrown by Ryan have been balls thrown to Roddy.

Ree . . ..well at least we have had a tough half of play by the D. Offense definitely missed opportunities when they seemed to have a decent flow going. (Key word decent!) Didn’t like that Int pass by Ryan . . . ..but I do like the decisions he made – except Int. . .even on those passes he was a little off on. No excuses . . .but I try and find the half full glass views:) So I’m not giving anyone a Pass . . ..because none is necessary. Ryan will be the starting QB (unless unforeseen circumstances) and he’ll have to tighten it up.
Jimmy
August 27th, 2010

The offense will not be able to rely on short passing and Michael Turner this year.
Teams are wise to that game.
If Ryan can’t make the medium to long range throws and/or his receivers can’t catch them…
It will be a long season.
I know it’s preseason, but you are looking for a little bit of consistency at least.

Jimmy

I too agree about Roddy.
This is something he has done consistently in his career…drop catchable throws.
He also seems to struggle to get separation consistently.
When he catches balls…DB’s always seem to be draped all over him.
This is why I can’t yet conclude Ryan is just average.

I am not saying give him a pass, but don’t get on here and say he’s average based on a preseason game. You can’t make ANY predictions from preseason games. NONE. I don’t care how much you think you can. The offense we are running now is only a small portion of what we pull out in the regular season.
Would you have said the 2008 Detroit Lions would have made it to the playoffs in the third game of the preseason. I hope not, because they went winless in regular season but undefeated in preseason play. I’ll bet Kitna looked elite didn’t he?
Like I said, don’t get on here and bitch and complain because of a preseason game. Look at his stats from year 1 and year 2 you’ll see that he right up there with the best in the league.
Just like I am not going to get on here and sing his praises, I wouldn’t get on here and throw him to the dogs either.

I think it was a smart move to put Ryan in too. He seems to need some more reps. Maybe he can close in on the receivers better this drive or the next . . .now that it is 3rd and long. (If he comes back in)

I think Marshall would have gotten that call if the ball was just a little more inside. The Ref may have looked at it differently since the ball was going “out of endzone”. Now I think Marshall was interfered with, and the ball could have been caught. Just saying might have been where the ball was thrown.

I’m telling you our D has looked good.
They have had pressure and pretty good run stuffing.
The D will only get better.
This is why I’m becoming concerned for the O.
They should be a little sharper than this in the third preseason game.
It’s a good bet the first string won’t play much next week.

oranjucejonz . . . ..I don’t know, they are not starters for a reason that the coaches have . . .although nice pass by Redman for TD there. I missed what must have been a long pass to Douglas . . . .checking out the Red Sox and Rays on a Florida channel in between. (Sox up 3-1!!). I digress. I do think that back-ups come in a lot looser than the starters and often look very good. I’m not sure if they are playing against 2nd /3rd stringers all the time or what . . ..just think there is a different sort of pressure they have when they come in . ….. and I think they do open it up more.

Wooderson,
You lose credibility for saying Bradford. He’s a freaking rookie in the preseason. John Kitna looked great for the 2008 Detroit Lions preseason too didn’t he? How did the regular season go for him? Oh yeah, winless. Gotcha. Preseason is a key determinant for the regular season.

I don’t know if you saw the reply of the TD
But Finneran didn’t make much of a move to the outside before turning inside.
He got no separation because of it.
It was lazy route running.
That is what I’ve seen from Roddy on a regular basis.

In an interview earlier this week, Ryan said the team has a long way to go to be ready to compete. I can only guess he was speaking about himself. Wow – what a flutter ball he throws and those feet never set. Tonight, Redman looks much more prepared and competent to take this team down the field. I agree with some of you other guys – tonight, Ryan is average at best.

I listen to quite a few Dolphin fans and talks show hosts comment on how they would take Ryan over Long if they had that chance now. And they all like Long. The Falcon fans have been very tough on Ryan on this blog . . . .and I understand that because of the high expectations. I’m still thinking he will be successful in Atlanta and over the next year or two bring in some of the detractors. Don’t jump on me folks . . .just my opinion . ..and hope!!

The issue with Ryan is he is following the most loved/hated QB of all time in Atlanta. Ryan has been hyped to the moon and his detractors jump on that every chance they get. He isn’t an elite QB. He is a good, smart, hard working QB that I hope someday will lead us to the SB. Bottom line his record is 20-10 so far. That isn’t mediocre. It is good, not great or elite, but good.

Superfin . . ..OK . ..I’ll agree with the miles away from elite thing too!!! He gets beat up a lot on these posts. Last week one poster putting Ryan down actually brought up something about Brees being #1 rated QB and his being on SB team . ..hence correlation – need high rated QB to win SB. He also put down Ryan’s 20 or 21st QB rating last year. Well I went back and looked up Brees’s first 3 starting years. He was much worse than Ryan and actually in first year (Ryan 11th – Brees was like 24th or so – Brees had terrible TD/INT ration) – second year Brees went down to like 29th in rating . ..again not so good TD/INT Ration. However – 3rd year . . . .Brees bumped up all the way to 3rd and we see the end result. So all I’m saying is for his first two years . . ..Ryan’s done pretty darn good . . .and hopefully his improvement scale is somewhat like Drew Brees.
