FLOWERY BRANCH — On Twitter.com I presented the following question last night:

“With (Michael) Jenkins hurt and Kerry Meier (knee) out for the year, do the Falcons need to make a move at wide receiver? Send along your thoughts.”

Well, more than 50 people did. Here are your thoughts on the wide receiver position. A certain Mr. Jackson’s name was mentioned several times.

The Falcons need to something at WR after missing out on TO , Brandon Marshal , and Boldin , Vincent Jackson is on the block after that performance Thursday Matt Ryan obviously needs help also P. Creaton and Miles Austin who is a RFA but Dallas is not going trade him.

LOTS of potential and talent on the roster that apparently hasn’t been given a chance in the heat of battle – Harvery and Wolfe come to mind.

Bergeron showed some YAC that the Falcons have lacked since HD went down, so he deserves a stronger look as well.

Lets not import a trainwreck waiting to happen (Jackson, drugs questions) without giving the folks in hand a fair shot! If they can’t cut it, THEN look at other options.

Stop over reacting people, really, how many catches did you all expect from Meir this season anyway. I am far more concerned about Corey Peters. It does help us the fact that JA98 is one of the best 4-3 DE in the NFL at STUFFING THE RUN. No, he isn’t a good pass rushing DE, but he is as rock solid a run stuffer that you will find at his position, even better than Julius Peppers.

Meier was not a starter folks. He provided depth so going after Jackson doesn’t make since…unless we’re talking about cutting Jenkins. Then I can go along with it.

While it would be great to seen Vincent Jackson in a Falcons uniform, it’s not gonna happen. If I’m not mistaken, the Falcons would have to give up a first and a third round pick to get him (if that’s incorrect, then please let me know). Also, we know he’s looking for a big payday, and I seriously doubt the Falcons are going to give high dollar contracts to 2 receivers. Now that I think about it, Roddy White got a new deal last season and Micheal Jenkins signed a $20 million dollar extension as well, so the chances of Jackson coming here are slim to none.

Also, you can’t knock the Falcons for not going after Anquan Boldin and Terrell Owens. You see Baltimore had to give up a second and third round(or fourth round, I can’t quite remember) pick to get Boldin, and we had already traded away two picks to get Tony Gonzalez and Tye Hill. As for Owens, I personally like the guy, but given his history, he’s not the type of player that this team needed.

I’m all for giving some of the unproven guys we have now a chance to see what they can do over the next 2 preseason games. A lot has been written about Brandyn Harvey, but I haven’t seen him on the field at all during the first 2 preseason games. Let’s throw him out there and see if he lives up to what’s been said about him. Also, Ryan Wolfe and Troy Bergeron may be able to do something as well.

I honestly don’t know what other receivers are out on the street looking for work, so I can’t really comment about who else we should go after. Damn shame about Meier’s injury. I was really looking forward to seeing what he could do for us this season.

OMG, you guys have gone bonkers, if Vincent Jackson is Championship Caliber, then why hasn’t he won 1 with the highly talented San Diego Chargers, who play in perhaps the WORST DIVISION IN THE NFL. We are going to beat the stuffing out of the Steelers in 3 weeks, and I for one would like for all of you OVERREACTORS to leave the blog and start rooting for the Cleveland Browns.

Sly Ty, I’m with you on the comment about Corey Peters. So far, I’m hearing that he didn’t tear any ligaments in his knee. That’s definitely a good thing, considering that he said he heard something pop. Losing him for the season would be a bigger blow than losing Meier.

DJ Sniper said it all. Believe me, if were were going to pay the huge price VJ will command for a WR, it would NOT be for VJ. True, we are presently weak/untested at Jenk’s position (not to mention the slot position), and Finn is probably not the answer if we want to move to the next level. But VJ/ No.

Kerry’s injury may be a blessing in disguise for the team. The originally wanted to put him on the practice squad, but were facing the reality of having to put him on the active roster to keep other teams from signing him away. IR accomplishes the same thing and they don’t have to use a roster spot.

YES! I think he’s worth the risk. We have DUI’s in Babineaux and we are dealign with that. It’s not the same baggage as domestic violence issues that someone like Brandon Marshall has. Sometimes a change of scenery and being around a vet like Gonzo can help turn his life around.

mountain_jim

August 21st, 2010
12:27 pm

Well I am sad for Kerry. As Gonzo said during the game, he was really getting noticed and playing well so far. Plus with his brother’s death during draft week, this year has just been awful for him and his family.

I hope some of the other no-names in camp are good, because the Falcons really do appear light at WR. If Roddy were to go down, the situation would be severely bad for this team. They did not spend a lot of draft capital on WR or bring in any big FAs last 2 years, so Jenkins better heal and Roddy better stay well and Harry better be as good as folks are hoping, and over his injury.

Mularkey will have to start going deep when the games get real or the offense is going to continue to stall due to other teams stacking up front to stop the run and the short passes.

Superbird

August 21st, 2010
12:30 pm

Hope Meier can have a speedy recovery and contribute next season. Don’t know why most Falcon Fans are over reacting, Meier was going too be added for depth only, not like he’s been a proven receiver with 100 catches a season, maybe he would have had 15 to 20 receptions this year, a starter on special teams.

We should have taken Owens when Jenkins went down, offered him a one year contract packed with perfomance incentives and kept him on a short leech, I know all about the culture the Falcons are trying too build with choir boy Football players, but we need some roughneck hardcore football players with attitudes that will bring some trash talking and energy to this football team.

This team was weak at the receiver position even before Jenkins got hurt,Its beginning to amaze me that some are suggesting we settle with Finneran and the back ups we have, we not only need a bonafide #2 receiver, but we need to aquire a #3 as well. Jenkins injured and may be slowed by this same injury this year, Finneran is injury prone and slow, Douglas coming off serious injury not up to full speed , imagine that, we have nothing after that. Roddy White is the only top notch receiver, he goes down we have nothing.

People calm down on the Jackson “Whoa Nelly” train. As has been said before Kerry was only going to be a backup this yr with promise for the future. The Falcons are committed to Jenks for this 1 last yr. All this means is that we will probably be drafting a WR with our no. 1 or 2 in next yrs draft. I do think it’s time, though, that the Falcons (and we fans too) understand that the purge is over and we have a very strong core of players so that we can take on a V Jackson as a player to put us over the top, if that’s what Smitty and TD think we need, without fear of said player undoing the tragectory of the team. Aka. As the patriots have done with Moss and others. In this instance though I don’t think TD sees as one of those times. If it was Jenks out for the yr though…….

Chop Buster

You took words out of my mouth…Vincent Jackson. They needed an experience WR to go with Roddy anyway. Finn is a still serviceable…but not a starter; Jenkins is injured but he was never a number 2 to begin with. With White, Gonzalez, Douglas and Jackson we could have a formidable passing core this year. Stop playing around TD and bring the damn man in for a work out.

torgo

August 21st, 2010
12:59 pm

Just to clarify, no, the Falcons would not have to give up a first and third round pick as part of acquiring a former RFA. The restricted free agency period is over. The former RFAs have all signed their tenders or are holding out – with the current team holding their rights. Either way, it’s a pure trade situation and the price is entirely negotiable.

As for whether the Falcons should get another WR, it depends – is Matt Ryan actually going to start looking to throw to the WRs anytime soon? If he keeps throwing only to Gonzalez and the RBs, we might as well just line Keith Zinger out wide and let him have fun pancake blocking CBs.

To me the Falcons get complacent at certain position like wide receiver rather than improving the team because of character issues I thought they should of signed T.O. but know we sit there and act like Michael.J is the best # 2 receiver in the league rather than get a good #2 receiver or move him down on the dept chart I think Jenkins is a #3 at best go get someone dont get Jackson he does us no good sitting the first three gms unless thats the only option dont get any washed up player.

I still say they should have picked a wr with 1st pick, because our defense will be no better than last year. Dimitroff knew wr is one our weakest spot on the roster even with Roddy ( he is more of hands guy not a deep threat ). People are going to load the box against us until we prove we can stretch the field. Yeah we are picking up nice chunks of yardage, but we cannot punch it in. Everyone was laughing when they talked about TO, but who’s laughing now. Whether Jackson or not we better get another set of hands with some speed in here, because seems like New Orleans never has trouble finding young hands. Is it just me or were we singing this same tune about our receiving corp last year about this time ???

Will the Falcons finally go after a receiver now? Lets face it, Jenkins is not the #2 guy. I know I will get grief for this, but I honestly believe Roddy White is a strong #2 receiver. Vincent Jackson is out there, pipe dream. Javon Walker is out there; two #2’s are better than a true #2 in Roddy and a #3 in Jenkins. I was very excited about Meier this year. Seems we are jinxed when it comes to slot receivers (Finneran two years ago, Douglas last year, and now Meier, whom I thought would get ample playing time this year). For this offense to compete with the pass happy teams that dominate, (Saints, Vikings, Colts, Pats, Green Bay, Cinci, Chargers, Texans, etc.) we need some more pop out there for Ryan to fully emerge as an elite. The best QB’s ever always have legit #1’s with very compitent #2’s and 3’s. We do not have this. Javon Walker would garner more attention than Jenkins. This would free up Roddy, Douglas, and TOGO (Tony Gonzalez) in the passing game. Use Jenkins in a rotation. We need to get the ball down field more, obviously. We throw way to many 5 yard passes, and I’m over it. Mularky is possibly, the most boring OC out there. I feel, I have been watching the exact same plays, for two seasons and through this preseason. Frankly, I’m sick of it and bored. So predictable. Lets face it, Roddy gets doubled amd Jenkins is way to easy to defend one on one. So, for Ryan, it’s too easy to go with the sure thing, TOGO across middle and into the flats. These are the only options 90% of the time. Snooze fest. Our defense will be sub-par again this year, don’t kid yourself. We need to score. We need to sign the best option at receiver immediately. Ryan is a stud QB but will never get there with this receiving corp. Never. Plus Jenkins and White drop too many passes, I know not statistically, but when it matters. I have watched every game since these two came on board and dare someone to challenge me. Jenkins would not be starting for any of the other top 20 teams in the league.

The problem with getting Jackson. First-He wants no 1 money to be a no. 2 WR. Second. After Roddy and TG get 80-100 catches, will Jackson be happy with the same 50 that Jenkins gets, uh-NO Third- we are a run first-throw second offensive mentality and I don’t see Smitty changing so with Jackson coming from pass happy San Diego he would not be happy. Let’s see how the WR’s shake out this yr and draft a WR with our No 1 next yr

What about Crayton in Dallas?
He could be a serviceable #2 WR.
He is said to be unhappy with the Cowboys, way down on their depth chart behind Miles, Bryant and Williams.
He seems obtainable for a lot less than V-Jac.

i’ve been reading most of the comments since the pats game and looks like a panic to me. maybe you call throwing you team under the bus after 2 preseason games “discussing” but it sounds like panic to me . all i’ve heard is depth, depth, depth and BAM there is none . of course you go outside to fill it azzhat but smitty is to dumb to know that. just like last year with all your injuries he didn’t do it ’till it was to late. i don’t need to judge falcants fans- i can see their support already

Stephen Alexander nice try buddy, but let me do a quick analysis for you: Anquan Boldin came from pass happy system with Hall of Famer Curt Warner his stats will be down significantly in Baltimore,Pierre Garscon again is in a pass happy system with Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, Terrell Owens is still explosive yes, just like C4, he will blow up sooner or later. Meachum who the hell is that, Santonio Holmes is a habitual weed smoker and will be serving a 4 game suspension to start the season, Roy Williams is less of a player than Jenkins at this point, Percy Harvin is a #3 guy with Migrain issues will be done in 2 more seasons. Sidney Rice is injured again, and has a history of being injury prone. Oh, Miles Austin is a #1 receiver not a 2. But again, nice try Stephen Alexander you helped prove my point.

sly ty, nice name. no buddy, read my original post. all pass happy teams have legit ones and twos. almost confusingly. miles austin is a one now, last year he was not. think roy williams still garners more attention than michael jenkins…terrel owens is one of the best receivers of all time and is a first ballot hall of famer that has played with the likes of jerry rice. meachum is the saints #2 by the way, and he catches the ball when its important. look at percy’s stats, think you will see that he lined up in the two slot frequently. hes been dealing with these symptoms his entire life and has made it this far. rice will be there for opener. as for kurt warner…who were his two receivers in st. louis win there was a superbowl being one. michael jenkins is a joke, bust. its the new nfl baby.

Jackson would be great but i believe that he’d cost to much for what we’re willing to spend. I still say that Patrick Crayton is the answer & will cost a reasonable amount! He’s a proven # 2 & Dallas doesn’t need him, I said this before Meier went down, but we definitely need to do this now! Jenk might not be back game 1, Douglass is still working his way back & Weems nor Finneran are good enough players to be legit # 2 options. WE NEED CRAYTON, bc even when healthy Jenk isn’t a legit # 2, but if we don’t get Crayton, & we aren’t willing to spend to get Jackson, we could at least get L. Coles or T. Holt who just got released by the Pats. But i’d take any of them, Jackson obviously being the best option.

Should have got TO yo. Missed out on Boldin and B Marshall. Another weapon like that would be the finishing touch on this team. It would make us legit. I don’t understand how we are $35mil under the cap and we let an opportunity to land one of the leagues best WRs… 3 times!!! (Owens, Marshall, Boldin). Come on Mr. Blank, open up that checkbook!

Roddy White will now be double teamed every play, every game until someone steps up.

Whoever made the decisions on the Falcons draft bypassed a number of talented receivers-especially from FL and now they are in the toilet again. Second rate receivers will not make MR an all pro QB. It not only hurts him, but worse of all it hurts the team and us loyal fans. Any good fan could have picked a couple of good receivers-like New England did. Why do we alwaya seem to have Sh— for brains when it comes to the draft. Look at all the receivers and other position players we have passed up in order to draft second rate-cheap players. Garbage in = garbage out.

All ya’ll calling this a panic & acting as if this is a new issue, ya’ll obviously haven’t been paying attention to blogs & the cries of Falcons fans until now! Ppl have been begging for a new # 2 wr for at least a year & a half, but more like 2 to 3!!! & All ya’ll in support of M.J. INCLUDING Sly Ty must be the ppl smoking! There is no way that M.J. is a legit # 2 & there is definitely no way he’s more feared than Roy Williams!!! I really hope that was a joke! M.J. best year he got 53 catches, Roy Williams has toped that total 3 years including a year when he had 82 catches, 7 TD’s, 1,310 yards & averaging 16 ypr. Jenkins couldn’t even dream of doing that in the NFL, much less back at OSU! & for the Percy Harvin hater, please don’t do that, he’s going to be a stud 4 years to come, you must not realized that T.D. (Den) had the same issues & somehow made it into the HOF, go figure! Ppl please wake up!!! You might not think Jackson is the answer & i could understand that (although i disagree but i understand where that sentiment comes from) but lets not act as if Jenk is the answer!!!!!
& For ya’ll who obviously don’t get it, these outcries for a wr aren’t really bc of Meier, we just hope the injury to Meier helps the organization hear what some of us fans have been saying for years now! We need another WR & a new kicker if we are going to make it to where we hope to go!

Nique

Unfortunately for us Falcons fans who can see, it doesn’t look like any move whatsoever will be made!!! Over an hour ago from CBS’s NFL rapid fire reports- Even with WR Kerry Meier (knee) lost for the season, coach Mike Smith said it’s unlikely the Falcons will seek a free-agent WR. “I don’t anticipate that we need to do anything in terms of our roster,” Smith said. Falcons Rapid Reports.
Ugh!!!!!!!!!!!!This is soooo frustrating!
Jenk cost us two games last year!!! & our kicker cost us games, with 1 of those 4 games, we’re in the playoff’s despite all of our injuries last year, but funny enough (actually not funny at all) we haven’t addressed either 1 of those 2 positions going into this year & still after seeing them re-emerge here in the preseason, seems to be turning a blind eye to them again this year!

Baaaad idea looking at Vincent Jackson……… Lost the link but O’well………..

According to the North County Times, the Chargers have placed unsigned restricted free agents Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill on the team’s restricted list. Such a move mandates a mandatory three-game suspension for each player once they finally do come under contract.

Our View: This includes even if they are eventually traded and signed by another team. In other words, Jackson is now facing a six-game suspension to begin the 2010 season. The Chargers have precious little leverage with their holdout wideout. .

drmondo

According to ESPN, here’s who’s left as a FA WR:
Marty Booker
Kevin Curtis
Justin Jenkins
Muhsin Muhammad
David Tyree
Javon Walker

I’d like to see a bit of our current guys before jumping into the FA pool but I am nervous about this position. Jenkins blocks well but doesn’t contribute at a #2 level.

For the 276th time, TO is not the answer for the Falcons. He put up similar #s as Jenkins last year. He has caused problems in EVERY locker room he’s been in. He’s thrown QBs and coaches under the bus. Last year while “quiet”, he started a squabble because “racist realtors” wouldn’t rent to him (though it was later shown he wasn’t returning THEIR calls about the house). He also refused to say anything positive about anyone on his team (at least he didn’t throw anyone under the bus, he just refused to pull the brake).

Not sure about V Jackson. He has a 3 game suspension to serve and wants big $$.

Stop joking yourself Atlanta will never be a winning team because they love average players instead of great ones. You never see Atlanta develop young talent like other great teams and they never go after the ones that could take the team and city to another level but again loves to hype the fans up with spending money their hard earn money to see a lot of average players praying for an average season. 90% of Atlanta’s players would not even start on other NFL teams. STOP JOKING YOURSELF AS IF WE GOT A CHANCE AT GOING TO THE SUPERBOWL. We never draft well, don’t develop talent well, only make one trade a year, boring offense, and a no clue defense…

Why hollow about a receiver now when they clearly had a chance to take a raw one in Dez Bryant oh! I forgot he does not the stereo type that Atlanta love and he has to much talent for their team. They could have got a linebacker in FA instead of another rookie that they want develop. It’s only been a hand full of rookies that the team has drafted and turned out to really help the team to the playoffs or become a pro bowl type player. Only a hand full thank about it. Too loyal to average talent in a big time league.

This is not the way I wanted this season to start. Hopefully Finneran can have a great season before he retires and then Meirer can take over once he’s healed. Jenkins has never impressed me so I hope to see Douglas come back and help more, to pick up his slack. After what the hated Pats did to the defense, Smith hasn’t impressed me with his defensive style ball either. Looks to be a very long season ahead I’m afraid. Hope to see TD make some serious changes with this talent level on defense by next season, starting with the secondary and a replacement for Peterson!! Perhaps a better defensive coordinator might help as well.

2 DUIs do not a loser make. Jackson is much better than Crayton and our squad was fairly crappy even before Jenkins got injured. Jackson is worth a 2nd rounder+ and salaries are negotiable, esp with a suspension to set high performance clauses. I say go for it, b/c VJ is better than anyone we have in line after White.

If you think we need meier. what has he done? nothing, Atlanta offense was ranked 13 in scoring, 1 point more than dallas rank 14 last season and we had alot of injuries. ERIC WEEMS NEEDS TO GET THE BALL MORE. He has established himself and developed into a good receiver.

Wow. It’s a 5th round draft pick, folks. Anything he did above and beyond ST this year would be a bonus. Did he look good in camp? Sure. Is losing him disappointing? Sure. Does it mean we need to commit $6-$20 mil on another WR? No. While I wouldn’t be surprised to see Jenkins replaced around the time we replace Gonzo, there’s already enough players to get the ball on this team.

The real tragedy here is that DOL posted the flippin tweets on this site. Really? Really? If I gave a damn, I’d get twitter. I get more than enough of what the random Joe thinks on these response pages.

If teams do not respect your pass game your run game does not stand a chance because the D will keep 8 in the box all day and force you to throw the ball. Ryan come on dude, what happens if Brees, Brady, Manning, E. Manning go down. Oh yeah, we get to see what happens to the MIGHTY STEELERS with the alleged Rapist being suspended when we play his team. We are going to beat the Stuffing out of the Steelers because their Franchise Quarterback will not even be allowed in the Stadium that day. They have severe issues, we don’t.

It seems like you have severe issues that have become overlooked. 242.1 passing yds. allowed in 2009 makes me think that ANY qb could pass all day on this secondary so the Steelers qb won’t be an issue. Additionally with Polamalu back in the Pittsburgh lineup the Falcons are facing a top ranked defense. Pittsburgh is not going to be that easy. Obviously you must have been riding with Jonathon Babineaux on your way to Michael Vick’s house when you wrote this comment.

Wow!! letting the Bengals sign T.O. for fish heads and rice is gonna come back and kill the Falcons. Being so conservative in the NFL will kill you everytime. Get your popcorn ready on Oct 24th.

The Falcons brass are not going to publiclu saying they are looking for WR help, but you know they are. The Falcons have to get another playmaker at WR. Banking on Roddy White, and Harry Douglas coming off injury is not comforting. In the NFL, its not just enough to just catch the ball. You have to get yards after the catch and make plays to help your QB. May of the Falcons routes are catch and get down plays that don’t allow for the WR to get yards after the catch. If Douglas can’t provide that, then we are in trouble.

It would be great, but the price would be too high (re: draft picks).

Getting T.O. would have added some potential locker room headaches but the cost would have been much less. The “boom-bust” ratio there would have outweighed anything else that’s out there.

YESSSSS its obvious to the reast of the world that the falcons have just an average WR corps. We need Vincent Jackson bad with our fragile Wideouts!!!! If Arthur Blank wants another winning season he better get with the GM and sign Vincent Jackson. 10-6 looks better than 7-9 coach smith!!!!!
