FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons secondary had to face New England quarterback Tom Brady without their top two corners backs in the first practice on Tuesday morning.

Dunta Robinson, who signed a six-year $57 million free agent contract, has been out with a hamstring injury. Brent Grimes, who’s been working with the first team defense at left cornerback, did not practice because of a groin injury.

Brady and wide receiver Randy Moss connected for two touchdowns. He caught one that appeared to be over Christopher Owens. He caught another and then went behind the Falcons players on the sidelines and told them “that’s two today.”

Falcons coach Mike Smith spent the morning watching his defense.

“I thought it went well,” Smith said. “The guys did what we asked them to do. They stayed on their feet when they were in shells like that. That’s the thing you want to have happen. I thought the guys worked extremely hard.”

The Falcons finished 28th against the pass last season and are seeking to improve in that area. It must be noted that there is no pass rush in the 7-on-7 passing drills and the defensive backs have to stay in coverage longer.

“They are a talented offense,” Smith said. “They have a great quarterback and a great wide receiver. I saw our guys out there competing and that’s what we have to do.”

Moss later dazzled the crowd with a one-handed grab with Brian Williams in coverage.

“Yeah, I saw his one-handed grab there,” Smith said. “He had a nice catch. I thought it was a spirited practice.”

Grimes, who is battling for a starting spot, suffered an untimely injury.

“Unfortunately he wasn’t able to go with us today,” Smith said. “We’ve got to get our guys healthy.”

The Falcons did strike back offensively.

Matt Ryan connected with Troy Bergeron on a touchdown pass and backup quarterback Chris Redman tossed a nice touchdown pass to Harry Douglas, who will play on Thursday night.

“Harry is really progressing well,” Smith said.

Seriously, it’s 7-on-7 drills. Let’s take it with a grain of salt.

Brady and Moss are going to get their completions we just have to make sure we’re getting ours. Until they prove themselves against competition of this calibre, we fans will continue to worry. Hopefully, the secondary will get healthy and tighten up before game 1…..

I was at practice that Roddy also had a nice reception. I saw a bunch of dropped passes and the Patriots seemed to have much more energy than we did. They were really talking it up during the punt drills and the 7 on 7 drill.

Only 7 on 7? The Falcons are loaded on D-line and will game plan to harrass with the 4 that were missing.

How many teams are going to hold up to fresh 300 pounders going after their QB in the 4th quarter?

Who checked Welker & how did they hold up? Moss is Moss, you can’t do anything with him unless your name is Revis & he’s not playing….the only one who stops Randy is Randy!

I freind of mine who lives in Houston told me that D.Robinson was damaged goods and he would not last the whole season. I told him no, but he is starting to scare me. He has not practiced fully in pads yet. There are two potential big bust situations at hand D.Robinson and M.Jenkins being out. DLed,what can the Facons do to sure up secondary and WR positions?

A waist of money by Mr Blanks. It wouild have cost a lot less to sign TO.

Is it me or does it seem that Falcons routinely get victimized by players they have a need for and don’t sign. Randy Moss and T.O. come to mind over and over again.

Robinson and Williams both practiced today. Grimes was held out.

I think the coaching staff is taking extra pre-cautions.

I also saw Jenkins out there throwing a ball and catching (not in pads). He looked like he had full motion of his shoulder.

Coach Smith has said repeatedly that they will bring the injured players along s-l-o-w-l-y. Robinson has been saying for a week he can go, but they’re holding him out until they’re sure. They made a mistake last year trying to rush Turner back, and they’ve learned their lesson. Quit whining about the injuries! I believe everyone coming off injury except Jenkins is scheduled to play in Miami next week.

It is practice! No one is trying to WIN anything here. For all we know, Smith asked BB to give the Atlanta D some work on pass defense, and either way, they can go back and look at what they need to fix.

What Atlanta fans might want to worry about is several observations that the players had a lack of intensity in comparison to the Pats, overall. Even though practice is a time to work things out & fix them, you generally play the way you practice.

Fish, did you see TO play this week ? He is running a 4.8 these days but still has hands. A possesion guy now. His season numbers will be 60 catches,650 yards, 4TD’S. Is that worth his mouth and troubles? I think Mier would have same numbers with upside.

If it should be “noted” that it was 7 on 7 and there was no pass rush…. Then why do you Mr. DL look to make the Falcons look like non contenders when you state in you headline Falcons are torched by Pats?? Glad to hear Brian Williams is back in there. Practice, where Brady is sitting back there knowing that Abraham is not allowed to hit him, is not a game. If Williams and Owens are getting beat by Moss acting like the 5′8″ Grimes would have done any better is naive. Hopefully Dunta Robinson and Brian Williams are the two starters.

I agree its just Practice and Robinson will be fine, they are gonna take there time with injuries this is why you have a lil thing called DEPTH. Remember what happened to Turner after he tried to come back….Coach aint having it on injuries PPERIOD. An extra week wont hurt anyone and will only add to the healing process. So relax its just(clearing my throat) PRE FREAKING SEASON dang!!

Didn’t mean to alarm you all. That No. 12 guy is pretty good and Coach Smith said the DBs were “competing.” Just need to see the starters out there before much longer. It’s about time to get ready for Pittsburgh. The secondary needs some time to come together.

Hate to say it but Grimes being injured is the best news this preseason! No way he can cover WR’s like Moss or any other big framed receiver. With Robinson eventually on the field, the other CB will be picked on relentlessly and I don’t want that player to be Grimes, I’ve seen how that turns out already. It’s time for the Falcons to draft a talented CB that is OVER six foot tall asap.

Then we can use the smaller CB’s only on nickel and dime packages, when there are more of them out on the field helping each other, and not on an island by themselves getting manhandled by a much bigger player! I was REALLY hoping Owens would use this camp to show the coaches he was better than Grimes but I guess he wasn’t quite as stout as we thought on draft day. Maybe TD can get us a better version of him next year!

Two keys to the Falcons’ season, one on offense and one on D.

Offense: Harry Douglas

Defense: Dunta Robinson

Harry, hope you’re healthy son cuz we need you to keep defenses honest and prevent double-teaming of Roddy White.

Dunta, hope you’re as good as advertised because we still lact a legit pass-rush as long as Jamaal Anderson is in the lineup.

Randy Moss is the best WR in the NFL. Everybody needs to take a chill pill. Relax….breathe….we’ll have everybody back but Jenkins for the Miami Pre Season game…which last time i checked pre season games dont count. I dont know about yall but i dont want our important players getting hurt so we can rush them into meaningless games. P.S. T.O. doesnt cover recievers last time i checked. I agree that Mieir can be just as productive as T.O. and he probably has better hands.
