FLOWERY BRANCH –  The book club has this season off.

Last season, the Falcons had a mandatory reading from coach Mike Smith. The team had to read  “The Energy Bus: 10 ways to fuel your work, life and team with positive energy” by Jon Gordon.

Sports book clubs were popularized by Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson when he was with the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s. He used to assign his teams a book to read.

“We had a book, but it wasn’t mandatory reading,” Smith said. “We had a group of guys read the book. Again, it was another Jon Gordon book. He came in and spoke to the group earlier in training camp, but it wasn’t a mandatory reading and there was no homework assignment.”

Smith and few players read, “Soup: A recipe to nourish your team and culture.”

“We don’t want to do things the same way each and every year,” Smith said. “We wanted to change it up a little bit and keep those guys on their toes. I don’t know when’ we’ll have another mandatory reading, but some of the guys were surprised that we didn’t.”

Heading in the right direction – first 20 plays against KC looked good – Areas we need to improve the most are pass rush and coverage – tied together pass defenders are not going jump intermediate routes and unless they have confident the pass rush is going to force the ball out on time. If Turner can stay healthy and force the defense to play run defense on First and Second down, the pass defense in defined to Ryan and he will have a great year. Keep our QB from having to throw into 3rd down nickel and dime defenses.

Yeah I preferred seeing the kickers duke it out with 50 yarders. Better than getting Turner’s ankle twisted for 6 meaningless points.

As has been previously reported, the AJC reporters must generate several blogs per week now. This non story is simply a blog quota achiever!

Good grief!

Practicing with the Patriots is a mistake! Our younger players will be so focused on the Pats legacy/mystic that this will surely be a distraction and could cause a lost of concentration ln preperation forThursday night game. Coach Smith and staff must work overtime to minimize this possible problem. Jump on the Pats early and often this week.
