FLOWERY BRANCH — Rookie linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, the 19th player taken in the 2010 NFL draft, will start at weakside linebacker in the Falcons exhibition season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs at 8 p.m. Friday at the Georgia Dome.

Weatherspoon will start for Mike Peterson, who started 16 games at weakside linebacker last season. He is out with a calf injury.

“Sean will start at the (weakside)  linebacker for us on Friday night,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “Curtis (Lofton) will be our (middle)  linebacker and Stephen Nicholas will be our (strongside) linebacker.”

Over the offseason, the Falcons trained Weatherspoon at both outside linebacker positions. He will be expected to compete for a starting position.

Peterson turned 34 in June, but played for Smith in Jacksonville. Nicholas was a first-time starter last season, but was drafted as a weakside linebacker by the previous regime.

Weatherspoon, who played at Missouri, signed a five-year contract worth $17.5 million  on July 29.

Also, not expected to play are cornerback Dunta Robinson (hamstring),  safety William Moore (groin), safety Matt Giordano (groin), running back Jerious Norwood (hip flexor), defensive tackle Peria Jerry (knee), wide receiver Harry Douglas (knee) and cornerback Brian Williams (knee).

“Nine to 11 players will not participate in the game,” Smith said.

Nice! Look forward to watching him play. Last saturday I was at the mock game and my friend asked Sean if he was looking forward to playing the Chiefs, he just smiled and said “I’m gonna have fun with the Chiefs.”

Im fine with keeping Robinson out. Gotta make sure that hammy is ok for the long stretch. I hope this is Norwood’s last injury….he cant stay healthy. I also agree with keeping all the others out for this one. Its only the first preseaon game. They’ll have time to get more involved.

I think William Moore will have a lot of DNP’s next to his name during his Falcon’s tenure. Jerry may be in the same boat. Norwood? Snelling is our 2nd Running Back. Of all the guys coming back from an injury, Douglas is the one that I’m least concerned about. Robinson troubles me a little bit. Hamstring issues can linger.

William Moore was a bad pick! It is not too early to say that he will have health issues for the rest of his short NFL career. He missed most of his Sr. year at Missouri, his rookie year and now his sophmore year. That’s three years in a row! I have made peace with the fact that he is practically not on our roster.

What is the deal with William Moore? The kid has been hurt ever since his name was called on draft day. Maybe he is hanging with coach Bob Hudgins from WVirginia. He can’t help from falling and getting hurt every day either…

DOL.. Any truth to the rumor that the Falcons have hired an in-house nurse for Moore and padded walls and floors for his room in camp in an effort to keep him healthy?

Can’t wait to see SPOOOOOON! I’ve given up hope on Norwood, dude is ALWAYS hurt. Moore still gets one more season before I will write him off but things aren’t looking good. So frustrating having a guy like Norwood who is so dynamic but such a continuous disappointment.

I’m interested to see how the defense plays, every group has an interesting story. Seeing which DB’s play solid and fight for PT/ roster spots will be entertaining. Seeing Corey Peters debut, Jamal Anderson’s weight gain, and Sid/Beirman’s pass rush development will all be must see TV for die-hards like me. Then of course seeing our first rounder Spoon show us what he’s got will be exciting too! As for offense all I want is to see Ryan, White, Turner, and Gonzo get off the field as fast and as healthy as possible. Don’t need to see them practice to know they’ll be ready for the Steelers. The WR battles will be interesting and I hope my boy Demitri Nance from ASU (yeah yeah!) earns a roster spot. He won’t break any 60 yard runs but will crush anyone for that first down. Also interested in my other Sun Devil Robert James because if he doesn’t show serious improvement then he’ll have a tough time making the roster with his 4 game suspension for juicing. Pre-season games are torture when its not the Falcons playing but when it is I love evaluating the depth of our roster. Can’t wait!

Hey DLed, when I read interviews with the coaches about our secondary it seems Chevis Jackson is often left out of the conversation. Any vibe on him being on the bubble? Seems Grimes, Owens, and Franks are locks to make the roster so that leaves Brian Williams and Chevis as the guys fighting for that 5th CB spot. Do you see us carrying 6 CB’s in any scenario, maybe with Brian Williams also serving as depth for saftey? With Coleman, DeCoud, Moore, and Schillinger it seems like Giardano might just be a training camp body. Have you seen anything out of the former Packer at practice that would lead you to believe he has a solid shot at making the roster?

I’m starting to wonder about William Moore as well. He was cleared to play a while back, but now he’s back on the shelf with a groin injury. I’m not ready to completely write him off, but all these injuries do have me concerned.

DOL, what’s the word on Rafael Bush? I’ve seen some bloggers talk about what a hard hitter he is and how he deserves a roster spot. What have you seen about this kid?

You can’t really honestly evaluate any of these players’ injuries. If they are coming back, no reason to rush them for preseason. If they are active and have a twinge, give them the time to heal. Hip flexors and groin pulls only get better with rest; you can usually play with them if they are minor but they won’t heal til the end of the season.

All in all, we seem pretty healthy.

I think Chevis’s best bet is that Owens stays right side and Grimes has to stay left side. That way he could be the nickel if he can beat out Grimes. IMO, that seems to be the only way he makes the team unless B. Williams cannot physically go.

No thanks truth, but I could also be gsu_b. However, they just got a football team.

D-Led, would the falcons consider bringing in a track coach as a consultant? These injuries all seem stretching related and I really think Jerious could use a track coach at this point more than a football coach?
