Pat Kirwan: Compares Ryan to a young Tom Brady

FLOWERY BRANCH — It was rather quiet at practice on Wednesday, the  first day at training camp that both practices were closed to the public.

There were some sponsors and a few special guests, but the media had the “media box” all to itself for the most part.

Pat Kirwan

Pat Kirwan

But on Tuesday, Pat Kirwan and Tim Ryan were on hand to broadcast the “Movin’ the Chains” show on SIRIUS NFL radio.

Well, I’m a big fan the show and got to tell Kirwan, the former NFL exec, so when he was flashing through the media room. I said, “Mr. Kirwan, I really enjoy the show.” He said, “Pat’s fine. We have a lot of fun with it.”

Later, I jumped in the batmobile and got to hear the closing minutes of the show.

Kirwan , who has worked for the Jets, Cardinals and Buccaneers, stated that he thought Matt Ryan was a “franchise” quarterback and would be in the top five or six quartebacks in the league. He expects him to throw 25 to 28 touchdown passes this season. (fantasy tip?)

Here’s an article Kirwan wrote about Ryan for NFL.com.

He compares Ryan to New England quarterback Tom Brady, who’s guided the Patriots to four Super Bowls with three wins.

Kirwan also said that he felt the Falcons hit on draft picks linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, defensive tackle Corey Peters and wide receiver Kerry Meier. He said he’ll take a “wait and see” approach for the rest of the 2010 draftees.

I think we need to stop pumping this guy up and comparing him to everyone. It’s time for him to start living up to the hype. Each season you guy’s try to build this guy up to be something that HE HAS NOT proved yet. Let’s wait till after the season, then we will know who or what to compare him to.

@NOLA- As much as I want to see Brees and co. with torn ACL’s. I have to give that one to you. When I saw that crowd on the news complaining about their handouts, I recognized Vick supporter”s (1 and 2) and Falcons Sorry’ baby mommas! Boy was I embarassed for the city of Atlanta, why couldn’t that have been NYC or the Big Sleazy! It was the same “free mike vick” crowd.

It’s like so obvious that the Falcons are like the best team in the history of the NFL. I mean if like a dude from Sirius Radio says so then it must be the Gospel. The Falcons are gonna like way win the Superbowl this year. Matt Ryan is like already the league MVP and the Spoon is like so already the rookie of the century.

It’s great to have that channel on Sirius ~ it is def one of my presets. I would be careful comparing anyone to the likes of Brady and Peyton. Ryan gets paid alot of money and obviously works very hard. “The Stars have to align” for a QB and his team to be perenial winners ~ superior ownership, management, and coaching as well and most importantly ~ the “skill” players MUST stay healthy. I predict that the winner of the NFC South will start with the afore mentioned traits and most importantly, MUST BE HEALTHLY for the the final quarter of the sched. Good Luck to the Birds!

lol @ stats i use to have a cousin on the team he left this year and now plays for the jags, but i was able to come to a few of his games with my brother and when the game was over we got to watch him exit the locker rooms and go to the garage, and every time we get to there there is stats yelling off numbers for players that i had never heard of, and i am a BIG time ATL fan.

That Pat Kirwin dude still looks the same as he did when he played that Magnum PI dude on tv. As far as Ryan goes, the play of those big beautiful intelligent O-linemen will make him or break him… Gotta keep those wretched, stupid, stinking, butt-ugly D-Lineman away. It’s hard because D-Linemen are notorius cheaters while O-Linemen never cheat. It’s a fact.

Dear Mr. Blanks and any other Falcons FO people who care,

I was 11 years old when the Falcons franchise was born and I have been a fan since that very day. I am not changing my stripes now since I really like the direction of the team on every level. Having said that, I am leaving this board and the Falcons website until the regular season starts. In addition I am not going to be making any purchases of Falcons gear during 2010. Also I am going to forgo my annual trek to see at least one Falcons game in person. Why? Because the complete lack of training camp video on the Falcons official site indicates that the Falcons don’t want me involved in their “process”.

Now I know that someone has decided that it is important not to give opposing teams extra video on the web that they can use to scout the team and I respect that decision, but the current ban on action video is way over the top. I would be perfectly content with just watching a few warm-ups and standard drills that give away no formations, routes or other useful information, but even that appears to be verboten. What remains is too boring to keep me involved. Talking heads answering the same questions every day is not engaging to me. So leaving the website for a few weeks will not be a burden for me as the content being offered to us hardcore fans is way too boring!

A lot of Falcons fans are stuck thousands of miles from FB and you are telling us that you don’t care if we feel cut off from the team. Fine. Have it your way. I will just wait until the regular season starts to get back to Falcons football. Later.

We may win or lose this year but here are some facts. Best QB in Franchise History. Best and only real coach in franchise history ( not a yes man or over the hill coach that can’t evaluate NFL Talent ) Best GM in franchise history. Best owner but a blind man can see that. Best OL in franchise history even with it’s flaws. Best DC in franchise histoy with exception of Glanvilles fluke of 78. We are headed in the right direction for the first time.

Hiramsaint you are right. Dan Reeves took the Falcons to the superbowl. I repeat, Dan Reeves took the Falcons to the superbowl. No easy task, as we all well know. However, I have a severe man crush on Coach Smith. He is a man’s man and knows that to win in the NFL you have to run the ball and play defense.

Hiram, we’re gonna run the ball 45 times the third week of the season and “your time” will be up!!

the playoffs and superbowl say different to your run hypothesis. how can you call someone who peroxides his hair a mans man? and a cheap swing at another player while hiding behind his players. too bad for dan and his triple bypass- i think he could have had y’all at the top level for years but then came mora. sorry about that one but he couldn’t coach his way out of a wet paper bag. seattle figured that out real quick. good luck tonight and no injuries

LAGUNA DARREN, GET REAL! I LOVE YOUR ENTHUSIASM BECAUSE THIS WILL BE A HISTORIC YEAR. BUT, TO SAY MATT RYAN IS THE BEST QB IN FRANCHISE HISTORY RUBBED ME WRONG! LET MATTY ICE WIN A PLAYOFF GAME FIRST. HE IS ONLY IN HIS 3RD YEAR. I LOVE MATT,BUT TO DISRESPECT STEVE BARTKOWSKI TOTAL BODY OF WORK IS A SLAP IN THE FACE TO ALL LONGTIME BIRD FANS WHO REMEMBER BIG BART! LET RYAN GET THRU THIS YEAR HEALTHY AND WIN A COUPLE PLAYOFF GAMES. THEN WE WILL TALK!

I’m not ready to concede that Ryan is the best QB in franchise history. First he has to prove he can carry the team, by himself, then he’ll have to juke for 1000 yds. Then, he’ll have to sell out stadiums across the country. Or, can he dive ten yds 6 inches off the ground? He’s good, but can he score a touchdown in the red zone in a pre-season game? Sorry, but Matty (buzz word)”ICE” is probably no better than 4th…and that’s a maybe. I am a Falcons guy, and I have high hopes, but reality; trumps hope. I don’t generally get into the conversations that are polarizing, because a lot of ignorant comments prevail. I like Ryan. I want Ryan to excel, but please don’t tell me he’s the best in history. Let’s wait awhile.
For good measure, even though I mentioned that other guy, I’m embracing the future, but I can’t deny the past. And I’m not saying he was the best either.

Peace…from the” most” Native

Matt may be close to Brady in stature but that’s about it. He still has a lot of learning and growing to do looking at his play last night. I know it’s just the first preseason game and everyone’s trying to get their rhythm, but he’s still locking onto the guy he’s going to throw to too much. I don’t see him scanning the field, going through his progressions every time. I’m sure he’ll fine tune things as he goes through more preseason games. The running game looks better, but then again it’s the KC Chiefs defense. I did like the play of a lot of our rookies…Franks, Schillinger, the rookie TE. JP Wilson looks 100% better than he did when he first got here. I see why we sent Shockley packing. Wilson has a nice arm and is very accurate. I wouldn’t be surprise to see him unseat Redman. The rookie RB Nance looks good as well and runs strong. I think we have some good depth on the team. I know many of you don’t like seeing Ryan criticized but it’s just one fan’s opinion on how I viewed him last night.
