Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio speaks to the media following the morning practice. D.Orlando Ledbetter/dledbetter@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons and the Jaguars went through a relatively peaceful first combined practice Monday morning.
There were two little dust-ups, but no fights of note broke out.
“I saw a little bit of chippiness from our end today, but I told our guys right away that’s not what we are interested in,” Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said. “You are not going to show me that you’re tough by doing stuff like that. We want our guys to come in here, practice hard and be competitive. We are really in a combined practice atmosphere.”
Falcons coach Mike Smith thought the first practice went well. The two teams will hold a special teams practice Monday afternoon.
“It’s great for our personnel department to evaluate our guys against other guys,” Smith said. “It’s an opportunity to work against other people.”
JENKINS UPDATE: Smith said that starting wide receiver Michael Jenkins will not require surgery for his left shoulder injury. He’s expected to miss four to six weeks.
“We are going to rotate our wide receivers,” Smith said. “Harry Douglas will be coming back. Brian Finneran and Eric Weems, they are all experienced players that will really step into his role. Again, Harry, we are bringing him along slowly and in a one-a-day mode. Brian and Eric will probably get the majority of the snaps and we’ll get Kerry Meier in the game Friday night.”
Jenkins injured his shoulder when he fell awkwardly trying to catch a deep pass from Matt Ryan in the intrasquad scrimmage on Friday.
Jenkins was at practice and was not wearing a shoulder harness. Smith would not reveal if he suffered a dislocated or separated shoulder.

DOL: If Jenkins is out 4-6 weeks, is there a category or status that he may be placed in to allow for an extra roster spot for a WR yet still keep Jenkins available for reg.season once he become healthy?
If I recall, some of the more serious categories (Inured Reserve?) mean that he is unavailable the entire season, even if he regains his health.

Not worried about any of these injuries. Jenks is going to set us back a notch or two for the first quarter of the season, but I would imagine that everyone else in the division is also experiencing its share of TC injuries. Let’s just hope no one blows out a knee.

Is it me or is it beginning to be the same people every year whom is reported with an injury. Its always Norwood the Glass Man (he want be striking up the band anytime soon), William Moore( hasn’t played a down in the NFL yet), Troy Bergeron (only a matter of time before he’s cut) bring back the GA Force. Although we haven’t had any major injuries to key players, consider that a positive and hope it remain that way. All that said can’t wait until Friday, Go Falcons.

Meier has to step up all of a sudden. You know what an over the hill Fin has to offer. He is strickly a third down and red zone receiver. Weems cant seem to shake #4 reciever status. Mainly beacuse of talent. HD is your slot man and you dont want to have to move him outside. Like Sam Jackson said time to “Rise up” Mr Meier. Maybe McKay could re-sign Joe Horn. That worked out well the first go around.

Oh, if you look at the stats and the fact M. Jenkins cost the Falcons along with J. Elam the playoffs last year, is the main reason I stated we haven’t had injuries to key players. M. Jemkins has not been a key factor in games, and not viewed as a threat.

Is this the team that is supposed to make a serious run at the Superbowl? You have got to be kidding me. You lose one WR and now the sky is falling. The problem is that this team does not have any depth at any position on the team. Your last two drafts have been fruitless. And this is the team that is supposed to win the NFC SOUTH. The Saints #4 WR(lance moore) is better than your number two…that is what depth will do for a team!

I like Jerious Norwood. I really do. He has incredible speed and quickness and when he gets in the open, he is dangerous. But he’s the Chipper Jones of the Falcons. Injury after injury, year after year. Has anyone ever looked closely at his legs. They’re pencils!! Pencils!! He obviously doesn’t work his lower body. He has to totally rely on his speed to get open, which isn’t often. It doesn’t take a hard hit at all to bring him down. You can practically breathe on him and he goes down. Again, I like him. I think he’s a good person. But he never has lived up to the original hype that brought him here.

Let me see, you stil have the same offensive line, the same running backs, the same WRS, the same TE, the same D-line(plus Jerry,if he can play), the same LBS, and you think you upgraded your DB position by overpaying for a CB who did not even get a pick last year. Oh yeah, I forgot he is your “SHUTDOWN CORNER”. I got one question, what happens when the Saints come out with 4 wide outs and Bush out the back field. Who does your SHUTDOWN CORNER cover??? Since taking over Dimitroff has remade the roster, adding 2 MLB, 6 OLB, 5 TE, 3 OT, 4 DE, 3OC, 8 WR, 5 S, 4 OG, 5 CB, 4 DT, 4 RB, 2 FB, @ QB 2 PK, and 4 RB–and those are just the guys that made the roster, not “camp bodies” or practice squadders. There are only 10 or 12 guys on the team that weren’t brought in by the new regime. Spend some time studying your opponents’ roster why dont’cha, in between bouts of self-congratulations or you may wind up with joint damage from patting yourself on the back….

Ok, now things seem to be working.
It still amuses me to hear Saints fans talking so much smack. One SB win and all of a sudden, ya’ll are on the same level of teams who have had multiple double digit win seasons (Colts) or multiple titles (Steelers). The Saints and Falcons were neck in neck in terms of futility for several years. It’s only been recently that the fortune of both teams has started to change.
As far as our depth goes, it appears that Saints fans are just talking for the sake of talking. I’ve been following the Falcons development all during the offseason, and we are in much better shape depthwise than we were last season. Michael Jenkins will be back early during the season, but his injury has provided an opportunity for others to step up. Kerry Meier is going to get a chance to show why the coaches are impressed with him, and I’m sure of one of the undrafted FA’s will get some time as well (my money is on Brandyn Harvey). We have plenty of bodies to occupy our DT spots (Babs, Jerry, Peters, Johnson, Lewis, Walker, and Anderson) and we’ve got a nice battle going on for the #2 CB spot (Grimes, Owens, Jackson, and Franks).

hiram &super???
Fans ought to crow a bit when their team wins the big one–no problemo–but some of the fans act like they scored the winning TD all by themselves. The point that I’ve been trying to drive home is that Super???’s assertion that this is the same ‘ol Falcons roster is dead wrong. I detailed the roster changes(which aren’t exactly a gov’t secret) in my earlier post. Whether those changes result in more wins remains to be seen but there’s no denying the nearly complete overhaul of this franchise in less than 3 years.
On the subject of duelling scrimmages, ATL drew over 12000 on a Friday not in the city, but at a H.S. stadium in Gwinnett county whereas the defending SB champs drew less than 3500 in Metarie. Perhaps that’s not a measure of NO’s popularity coming off last season, but it is a sign of the positive vibe surrounding the Falcons and maybe some complacency on the part of Saints fans…..

JeanE…I agree, Finn is not over the hill. Always room for an experience receiver especially in the red zone. What might get him are numbers. But w/ Jenkins missing all of camp, it does make his chances of making the team better than 2 days ago. You could always (when not hurt) count on him at 3rd down to move the chains! Something that you could not say for Jenkins.

They should just change William Moore’s position title from “Strong Safety” to “Participant” or “Attendee” or “Training Room Czar”.

Hiramsaint and other saints fans on this post think that New Orleans has a dynasty. Congratulations on winning the Superbowl. Congrats on barely winning against the Falcons twice, congrats on barely getting past Minnesota. I’d love for the Falcons to live off of luck and Katrina sympathy as your team has the past couple of years. But now its time to defend it. I personally don’t think your the best team to talk about dynasty. Your team is highly unstable, your fan base is fair weather, and your Head Coach walks funny! All are bad signs!!!!

who said anything about a dynasty? do your fans show up at the airport after every away game? we have for years- even the bad ones! maybe our coach walks funny but he knows how to coach. whats smitty done? peroxided his hair, took a cheap swing at an opposing player and has gone 0-1 in the playoffs! i’ll stick with our funny walker who has owned you since he got to the saints

HiramSaint: You live in Hiram….HA! Hasn’t the Katrina subsidies run out yet? A displaced person from Lousiana living in Hiram sitting in housing (subsidized) and writing on the Atlanta Falcons Blog in defense of the Saints… Now thats PATHETIC… I kind of feel sorry for you, but as you know most people have to defend being from Lousiana..poor schools, poor housing, no jobs, no dentists.
The statement was correct: In the event of a catastophic event (Katrina) you can’t even mobilze the citizens for evacuation, but you can sure send bus loads to Atlanta for a football game.
