Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio speaks to the media following the morning practice. D.Orlando Ledbetter/dledbetter@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons and the Jaguars went through a relatively peaceful first combined practice Monday morning.
There were two little dust-ups, but no fights of note broke out.
“I saw a little bit of chippiness from our end today, but I told our guys right away that’s not what we are interested in,” Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio said. “You are not going to show me that you’re tough by doing stuff like that. We want our guys to come in here, practice hard and be competitive. We are really in a combined practice atmosphere.”
Falcons coach Mike Smith thought the first practice went well. The two teams will hold a special teams practice Monday afternoon.
“It’s great for our personnel department to evaluate our guys against other guys,” Smith said. “It’s an opportunity to work against other people.”
JENKINS UPDATE: Smith said that starting wide receiver Michael Jenkins will not require surgery for his left shoulder injury. He’s expected to miss four to six weeks.
“We are going to rotate our wide receivers,” Smith said. “Harry Douglas will be coming back. Brian Finneran and Eric Weems, they are all experienced players that will really step into his role. Again, Harry, we are bringing him along slowly and in a one-a-day mode. Brian and Eric will probably get the majority of the snaps and we’ll get Kerry Meier in the game Friday night.”
Jenkins injured his shoulder when he fell awkwardly trying to catch a deep pass from Matt Ryan in the intrasquad scrimmage on Friday.
Jenkins was at practice and was not wearing a shoulder harness. Smith would not reveal if he suffered a dislocated or separated shoulder.

never said we don’t have injuries- we just don’t use them as an excuse like other teams. we had significant injuries on def. last year but real depth got us thru to … well you know where!

When I said quality, I certainly wasn’t referring to Saints’ fans who could only muster a paltry 3,400 or so to their annual gold/black game, while over 12,000 packed-out a high school stadium and had to turn fans away for the Falcons scrimmage. Spend some time studying your opponents’ roster why dont’cha, in between bouts of self-congratulations or you may wind up with joint damage from patting yourself on the back….

Thanks HiramSaint, it is truly amazing that some of these fans believe they are on the same level as the Champs. We have beaten them 7 out of the last 8 times and yet they still feel as if they can compete. I guess this time when they get swept they will blame it on the oil spill in the gulf,,excuses, excuses,,

Let me see, you stil have the same offensive line, the same running backs, the same WRS, the same TE, the same D-line(plus Jerry,if he can play), the same LBS,
That what you said and it was really kinda dumb.

all last year- we had injuries- the refs gave it to them- the other team came off a bye – the turf wasn’t right- it was an away game. at least when we stunk we sais so and made no excuse but not here. it’s always someone elses fault

One last time at Waynester…Maybe you shoul tell those 12,000 faithfull fans to go to the Georgia Dome and support thier team. It seems that everytime I go to watch the Saints play, you normally have 35 to 45% Saints fans in the building. I bet you wiill not even see 10% pigeon fans in the Superdome. Admit it,your fans are lukewarm at best. I respect you for sticking up for your team but it is really pathetic the type of support they get on Sundays…Good luck, you are going to need it

@ BIRDWORD..Next time read the context of the whole discussion before making your simple assessment. The point being made was that eventhough you have made all of these so called additions nothing has changed on the football field. With that being the case, what makes you believe that changes will occur this year when you STILL HAVE THE SAME NON PRODUCTIVE TEAM that you had from last year. Is that better or should I should I copy and paste some Pictures for you to understand?

I know those remarks weren’t directed at me since I don’t make excuses for another man’s job performance, nor do I live vicariously through “my” team. You’ve amassed a decent 4 year streak against the Falcons but I have to assume you’re too young to remember the previous 40 or so years of NFL history–as Birdword noted above. Try NFL.com/team vs team records to learn the actual history of “your” franchise…

What’s to say? I know it’s frustrating knowing your team has a losing record to the Falcons as evidenced by that last reach. I imagine you aren’t going to get a lot of traction criticiing a high school stadium that seats that many folks. Heck, you could fit the city of Hiram in there 10 times over.

@ waynester, the saints picked up a camp body and nothing more. And what depth has dimitroff been building? Let me see, you stil have the same offensive line, the same running backs, the same WRS, the same TE, the same D-line(plus Jerry,if he can play), the same LBS, and you think you upgraded your DB position by overpaying for a CB who did not even get a pick last year. Oh yeah, I forgot he is your “SHUTDOWN CORNER”. I got one question, what happens when the Saints come out with 4 wide outs and Bush out the back field. Who does your SHUTDOWN CORNER cover??? Yeah right,
This can only be constued one way. Really dumb.

Ok, now things seem to be working.
It still amuses me to hear Saints fans talking so much smack. One SB win and all of a sudden, ya’ll are on the same level of teams who have had multiple double digit win seasons (Colts) or multiple titles (Steelers). The Saints and Falcons were neck in neck in terms of futility for several years. It’s only been recently that the fortune of both teams has started to change.
As far as our depth goes, it appears that Saints fans are just talking for the sake of talking. I’ve been following the Falcons development all during the offseason, and we are in much better shape depthwise than we were last season. Michael Jenkins will be back early during the season, but his injury has provided an opportunity for others to step up. Kerry Meier is going to get a chance to show why the coaches are impressed with him, and I’m sure of one of the undrafted FA’s will get some time as well (my money is on Brandyn Harvey). We have plenty of bodies to occupy our DT spots (Babs, Jerry, Peters, Johnson, Lewis, Walker, and Anderson) and we’ve got a nice battle going on for the #2 CB spot (Grimes, Owens, Jackson, and Franks).

hiram &super???
Fans ought to crow a bit when their team wins the big one–no problemo–but some of the fans act like they scored the winning TD all by themselves. The point that I’ve been trying to drive home is that Super???’s assertion that this is the same ‘ol Falcons roster is dead wrong. I detailed the roster changes(which aren’t exactly a gov’t secret) in my earlier post. Whether those changes result in more wins remains to be seen but there’s no denying the nearly complete overhaul of this franchise in less than 3 years.
On the subject of duelling scrimmages, ATL drew over 12000 on a Friday not in the city, but at a H.S. stadium in Gwinnett county whereas the defending SB champs drew less than 3500 in Metarie. Perhaps that’s not a measure of NO’s popularity coming off last season, but it is a sign of the positive vibe surrounding the Falcons and maybe some complacency on the part of Saints fans…..

Please stop all of this negative talk about players that get injured. Didn’t a lot of fans make similar comments and and offer similar opinions about DE JAbraham and his injury history before and after we acquired him? After all, none of the players in question are starters.

I don’t think William Moore is gonna work out for us. I think his heart is in it, he just can’t stay out of the training room. Probable injury release and settlement. Hate to say it, but I think that’ll be the case. Not quite ready to give up on Norwood yet. I live to see him catch a screen pass and turn up field. I am feeling good about the new blood at RB, though. GO FALCONS!

82Dawg: Scott Case was a Pro Bowl Cornerback and lead the NFL in ints that year. He then moved back to safety when #21 arrived. He was feared as a tackler in which he demonstrated against the SF49ers at Candlestick in which absolutely decleated the running back, I believe his name was Roger(s)? Even Ronnie Lott was smiling. #21 and case really set up the right side as the place not to throw or run.

JeanE…I agree, Finn is not over the hill. Always room for an experience receiver especially in the red zone. What might get him are numbers. But w/ Jenkins missing all of camp, it does make his chances of making the team better than 2 days ago. You could always (when not hurt) count on him at 3rd down to move the chains! Something that you could not say for Jenkins.

They should just change William Moore’s position title from “Strong Safety” to “Participant” or “Attendee” or “Training Room Czar”.
