FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Mike Smith hopes to get cornerback Dunta Robinson, who suffered a hamstring injury last Sunday, back to practice next week. His missed practice for the fourth straight day on Thursday.

Smith acknowledged that it was “possible” that Robinson would not play in the exhibition season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on Friday, Aug. 13 at the Georgia Dome.

Smith is not concerned about Robinson’s long-term status. He’s been running on the side under the supervision of the training staff.

” I think any time you’re dealing with soft tissue, the precursor to pulling a muscle is that there is usually tightness in there,” Smith said. “We just want to make sure that he’s ready to go. We’ll bring him along just like we’ve managed the three guys that are post (operation). . . He’s our starting corner. I don’t know if he’s our left corner, right corner or our match corner, but he is our starting corner. We just need to make sure that he’s ready to go.”

Smith also considers backup running back Jerious Norwood to be in the same boat. He suffered a hip flexor injury and has also been running on the side with the trainers.

“We know what Jerious is capable of doing,” Smith said.

Some highlights from Thursday’s morning practice:

  • Backup quarterback John Parker Wilson directed the offense in the two-minute drill. Smith wanted to get him some action in the two-minute because he’ll be in at the end of the exhibition games.
  • With Robinson out, the backup cornerbacks are getting extra reps against the top receivers. Christopher Owens, Chevis Jackson and Dominique Franks are getting reps against the starting receivers in one-on-one drills.
  • Linebacker Bear Woods, an undrafted rookie free agent from Troy, made a nice interception off of Chris Redman. He was covering tight end Michael Palmer in coverage.

Dunta is one person that doesn’t need the reps. Is it just me or is the Falcon’s staff emphasizing protection of the top 53 players in camp?

TO would not be injured this soon. Regardless of position, if you are injured, you are not contributing. 50 to pay a guy to watch from the sidelines….Hey! Mr Blanks, I will do that for 1 million!

Joe Tess Fish House, yeah Joe, I saw where you posted on the other blog. It sounded idiotic over there too. Anyone who gets their knickers in a wad and writes off a veteran player because he is not participating in an exhibition game has a serious lack of football knowledge.

Joe Tess would you please go watch NBA or play craps in an alley with your friends. I wake up to read about football and possibly a few comments from Falcon fans that have some football knowledge. Please stay off the blogs unless you have something to say that anyone besides Terrance Moore cares about.

oh no. Arthur was sold a bill of goods. a hammy means he will never be able to run this season and has been in bad condition.

a cornerback with a bad hammy is toast. great fa acquisition. ‘cons are constantly being punked in deals by the rest of the league.

Lol get ‘em boys. Oh not Robinson isnt playing in the pre-season opener. The whole season is down the drain! LOL

If your team got decimated by injuries last season too, you’d be extra careful with your big money guys in the pre-season too. I finally got my season tickets in the mail. Row 9 lower level baby. Rise Up!!!

No news here. Robinson will be ready for the season. Those reps need to go to Jackson, Owens, and Franks anyway. I see Brian Williams being moved to FS at this stage of his career.

Pre-season is just that….PRESEASON!!! As in…. it doesn’t count in the standings of total wins and/or losses. It is a no brainer to hold Robinson back until he’s healthy.

Anyone mouthing off because Robinson can’t play in a preseason game DOESN’T HAVE A CLUE!!!….that’s not really what I wanted to say…but you get the drift….

I saw arthur blank at the movies last week at discover mills mall. It looked like his wife made him leave flowery branch to take her out a date. He had on matching falcons shirt and shorts with his socks pulled up to his knees (old school style). The good thing about that guy is if you didnt know he owned the falcons he looked just like a old man who loved football. PS The movie was “SALT” he was sleep more than half of the movie. It was hilarious. Not enough owners in the league like that. Most owners would rather watch it in their home theatre.

(THANKS FOR sharing this cool story. –dol)

I totally agree about holding out Mr. Robinson until it’s time for him to earn it. The risk is too high…..for no reward. Pre-season to me is a waste and a risk. Put those guys out there that are trying to make the squad. I think that your third string or deeper QB’s should get those reps to see what they can do. As for as Mr. Norwood is concerned………injuries. I really don’t see him having a long career. He’s not built to play the running back position. Legs are just too small. Why not try him at a corner? Can’t hurt!

Yes Joe Tess fish House you are allowed an opinion however you stated it as a fact and insulted the team management in the process so you opened yourself up to get hammered. You have to admit that it is overreacting to make such a statement based upon a young veteran POSSIBLY missing the first PREseason game. What you said just didn’t make in sense really. If you wait until mid-November to say we should have gotten TO because Robinson has been hurt then your comment makes more sense.

Robinson not playing is no big deal at this point. I just want to see him picking off passes from Big Byron or Dixion. More reps for the young guys will be a bigger help in the long run.

Joe Tess – you must have knowledge to have fact or insight. You prefer we sign a 37 year old WR when we needed a CB. Dez Bryant rookie WR with the Cowboys rolled his ankle on his own last week in practice. sutip cowboys, drafting and giving a 5 year contract to a guy that cannot run a rooute in a non contact drill with missing 4-6 weeks. How stupid!

NOLA
Reggie Bush showed the ‘con defense? If you are referring to last season, he didn’t do all that great. Here’s his stats for the two games against the Falcons:
PR 1 for 1yd Rushing 2 for 3yds Rec 2 for 11yds
PR 1 for 23yds Rushing 6 for 33yds Rec 6 for 46yds

So he had one terrible game and one good game. If that’s what the Saints expect for his $7 million pay (due to bonuses, $12 million against the salary cap) for 2009, they need to take some finance lessons from the Falcons. The Falcons get that much production from Snelling for less than $470,000.

Bush had a very good rookie season with 1300 yds from scrimmage (rushing + rec). But since then he’s missed 4 games, 6 games and 2 games and has not broke 1000yd in a season (rush + rec). So no he has not earned his money.

Don’t get me wrong, the Falcons have their problem children also…Jamal Anderson ring any bells? But most Falcons fans admit he is a bust. But for some reason most Saints fans won’t take off their blinders to look at Bush’s production objectively, and admit he has not lived up to the #2 pick status and his $52 million contract. Yes, he has provided some exciting moments like his two punt returns for TDs against the Vikings two seasons ago. But he hasn’t done it consistently.

Who cares if he sits out preseason? The starters don’t play but a series or two anyway so it doesn’t matter. These games mean absolutely nothing at all, so keep Robinson out and let him work at a pace to where he can become healed. As long as he’s ready to go on September 12th then that’s all that matters. Jerious Norwood is really starting to get on my nerves being injured all the time. If he has to sit out most of the season this season then he needs to be let go. He’s not helping us at all. He’s only filling up space on the roster. If he can’t perform up to standards this season then let him go. Robinson will be ready, and so will the rest of the team.

Robinson just needs to get that hammy worked on by the trainers and keep it loose. As long as Smitty feels comfortable with him knowing the playbook then there’s no need to panic.

Trust me you ‘con fans need to watch tapes of Bush making your defense look silly. I remember Keith Brooking whiffing on a tackle and tackling his own teammate which allowed Reggie to score a touchdown.

The Saints didn’t have to pick up the last two years of his contract but guess what they did because he is a gamebreaker who is irreplaceable.

You folks used to have a guy who was a gamebreaker too, so you should understand that stats do not always tell the story.

I am sure ‘con fans can appreciate the beauty of this simple TD. Where was the D? :) :)
