FLOWERY BRANCH – Defensive tackle Peria Jerry, the team’s first round draft pick in 2009, took part in his first football action on Wednesday since suffering a gruesome knee injury last season.
They didn’t stop practice or blow a special horn, but Falcons coach Mike Smith said it was “milestone.”
Jerry, who was injured in the second game last season against Carolina, jumped into the one-on-one pass rushing drills. Understandably, he was a little rusty.
“He moved all right,” defensive line coach Ray Hamilton said. “I thought he moved OK.”
The Falcons plan to be cautious with Jerry’s return to full contact.
“We are going to be patient and ease into this,” Hamilton said. “We want to make sure that his legs get stronger. We don’t want to push him into anything yet where he has to be in there with 11 guys, but we are going to ease him into some drills.”
Jerry was hurt late in the fourth quarter of the 28-20 victory when he got tangled up in a pile and his left knee took a direct hit. He was treated on the field for several minutes before being removed on a cart.
He was cleared to return to practice just four days before the start of training camp. Before Wednesday, he took part in individual drills, but was not allow to have contact with other players.
“He’s coming along,” Hamilton said. “We just don’t’ know when we are going to put him in those situations. But he’s coming along.”

D-led,
Thanks for the update on P Jerry. Should he and W Moore return to health, it would be like having an extra first and second round draft pick for this season.

Given his size it very well may be 2011 before Jerry really is able to contribute fully. I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see him at 100% until either very late in the season or next year.

We don’t need Peria at this point. We got depth and there’s no need to rush him back. He’s a luxury in that if he comes back and picks up where he left off it’s a plus.

D-led,
Any word on Robinson’s hamstring injury? Is he getting better. On another note, I wouldn’t rush PJ back. I bet JA will find some swag at d-tackle.

Good news. Gotta be better than JA98. Easy with him and hopefully he can start playing at a high level during the middle of the season. would be a big boost. Maybe after the bye. Like a late season addition.

DOL- Is that picture current? I’m suprised Jerry isn’t wearing any kind of brace on his knee.
(Not it’s not. He’s in a brace. We’ll get some new art soon now that he’s back on the field. –dol)

I worry more about his footbal conditioning not his knee. If he didn’t tear anything he will be fine. He just needs to get in football shape.
I went to the second day practice and Harry Douglas looked fast I worry more about him But I believe he will be Ok he wasn’t wearing a brace that day.
