FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons fifth round pick Kerry Meier is off to a great start in training camp.

He’s running crisp routes and has shown some nice hands.

“I’m just focused on building a solid foundation with my teammates and my coaches,” Meier said. “It’s been great. A lot of hard work and understanding that there is a lot more hard work and long days ahead.”

Coach Mike Smith views Roddy White and Michael Jenkins as the No. 1 and No. 2 receivers. The offensive braintrust is hoping that Harry Douglas can lock down the No. 3 job.

After that, the fight is on for roster spots.

Brian Finneran, Eric Weems and Meier are in the next group fighting for roster spots. Also, undrafted free agents Ryan Wolfe and Brandyn Harvey have looked good early in camp.

There’s also Andy Strickland, Tim Buckley and Troy Bergeron.

“There will be a lot of competition right behind the top three spots,” Smith said.

Meier, who started his college career at Kansas as a quarterback, is looking forward to competing.

“That’s great,” Meier said. “Anytime that you can get competition at a position and through the football team, that’s great. It’s going to push everybody to get better. If people are getting better individually, we are just going to get better as a team.”

Meier knows that he’ll have to make an impact on special teams.

From everything that is being said about Meier (very positive), I am hoping that he can quickly move up the depth chart and make an immediate impact this year on the field as a WR.

There is no real proven WR depth on this mediocre roster list, after White that is. Positions 2, 3 , 4 & 5 are all up for grabs.

The picture caption says he is off to a good start. The first sentence in the story says he’s off to a great start. I bet the truth is that he is off to an average start. Good vs Great. They spit out adjectives around here like my lawn mower spits out blades of grass.

I certainly enjoyed watching Weems last year, but as long as HD and JN can return kicks and punts, we don’t need him. Maybe he can play on the practice squad until one of the 2 can’t return kicks anymore due to a almost certain injury.

If this is a true “open competition” then someone should take Michael Jenkins’ spot right? Meier or Harvey has consistently snagged everything in all the practices so far. Let’s see if they can continue to do the same with pads on. Also if anyone has seen either one of them in camp can you tell me if they attack the ball–or wait on it like our prima donna Jenkins? I truly hope we are going to put the best players on the field this year and not let this become a political thing.

Jenkins will be fine at #2 as long as he snags a few more TD’s. It was the lack of production beyond that that hurt us last year and it looks like we have added some talent, albeit young.

Meier is a class act. He handled the quarterback transition at Kansas extremely well and moved to WR where he picked up tons of catches, yards and accolades. Here’s hoping he can perform at this level for the Falcons.

People with low self esteem and mother issues often inject themselves into situations and places where their opinions are not wanted and their presence is little more than mild annoyance. These are wannabe sociapathes who do not have the intelligence or the cojones to function in the real world. So they troll the blogosphere looking for people to harass in order to pad their since of self worth. But if nobody cares and nobody is annoyed, they revert to what they have always been-nothing.

i’ve always liked Finn and i’m sure he’s a great guy, but it just doesn’t make any sense to keep bringing him back year after year so he can get hurt and miss half the season. we can’t keep loading our team up with injury prone guys, and if you have young guys as promising as what i’m hearing in your receiving corp, it’s time to give them a shot.

You guys ever hear of Mazlovws Hierarchy? Probably. Let me assure you, I am comfortably sitting the the Self Actualization tier. You guys should be so lucky. It’s not a gloomy outlook to have a realistic view of the sport. Even though, I freely admit, that I’m biased in favor of the Saints; that doesn’t mean that I don’t understand the game, or the weaknesses (and few strengths) that the falcants possess. And WR on this team, is NOT a strength. ‘Course, that has as much to do with QB strength too, as it does WR talent.

cheshire

SeenThisB4, the entire point of drafting is to upgrade, and the entire point of training camp is to see what you’ve got. If you just want them to run out and buy a big name free agent, that’s not gonna happen. But it may not be necessary either. There are enough promising guys on this receiving corp to make you feel good about it. So whatever it is you are wanting the Falcons to do may have already been done. Give the young guys a chance and see what happens. So far it looks pretty good.

I just read that Norwood is out due to injury, this guy just can’t stay healthy, hip flexor again.

As for receivers, I dont’t think you’re correct Dled in saying that Weems and Finneran are ahead of Wolfe and Harvey. I’ve read nothing but good things about them. If Weems doesn’t win the return job, then we can do without him. Might be time to move Finneran onto the staff, with all his knee injuries.

That would leave White,Jenkins, Douglas,Meier,Harvey,Wolfe. Young yes, Inexperienced past #3, yes, but a big improvement over last year

Cheshire: I agree with you. This column was written as if Jenkins has the #2 slot locked, and I disagree. The only guy that has a position locked is White. I think everybody else needs to prove themselves, including Jenkins, to nail down a position.

If they had WRs that actually did have slots #2, #3, & #4 locked, then WR would be a strength. Who’s going to argue that?

Larry

Roddy White is a Michael Vick supporter. By default White’s substandard IQ and lack of basic fundamental values assessment should disqualify him as a #1 receiver. But, even if he could speak proper English and distance himself from a “Michael Vick” type his routine drops of winning TD passes alone makes him, at best, a #2 receiver on a great offensive team like the Colts, Saints or Patriots. Manning, Brady or Brees would never go to White with the game on the line. They would look first a a guy like Meier.,

GregKennesaw

Larry,

That post is in poor taste, Roddy White is a pro-bowl receiver, and would be the Number #1 on a lot of teams.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, Larry.

Just because someone hangs around Vick doesn’t mean they are any less stupid as Vick was/is/may be. Roddy and Vick have obviously been friends for years and that includes Vicks troubled time as a Falcon and Roddy never got into any of Vicks mess. Sounds to me like White is just a good friend, but has a much better head on his shoulders.

As for Meier, I can’t wait to see him on the field. I was excited when we got him.

Larry

Further, as an added element of surprise, what if, on a wide receiver screen, Meier pulled it back and hummed it to Gonzalez who had snuck in behind the linebackers that were moving up to tackle Meier? This added element of surprise is a must when facing the great defenses cabable of taking away the run.

As for the “poor taste” Vick comments, I can’t get it out of my mind the “free Mike Vick” shirt White embarrassed himself and this city with on Monday Night Football. Anybody else think that this is a make-or-break year for Jenkins? I’ve seen him drop too many balls in big situations to think of him as a dependable option, much less a clutch receiver.

I think a corps of White, Douglas, Finneran, Weems, Meier, Bergeron and maybe Wolfe should be the receiving group (in that order)… combined with Tony G’s talents, that’s a decent WR group. Let’s let Jenkins take his mediocre game somewhere else next year UNLESS he steps it up big-time this season.

It’s not a make or break year for Jenkins because he’s already been made. He’s been with the Falcons for 6 years and been paid well. He’s not a star, but he’s not as bad as many Falcon’s fans think he is.

The Falcons would have a lot of size at WR if they kept White. Jenkins, Finneran and Meier.

By the way, the NFL draft is based on POTENTIAL.. Meier is showing his great potential in practice. It doesn’t take a moron to figure out that’s what the article is stating. He’s off to a good start, that’s it. SI saw him as a great player on a good KU team. The Falcons saw him as a great player, who was worth a draft pick and now the rest of us are seeing how good he really is. How this is an issue for some is mind-boggling.

What has not been mentioned is the fact that Tony is our #2 target and the #2 receiver just needs to be average with good hands. I think our passing game will be better this year and I do believe our receivers will improve on numbers from last year. You referenced the saints earlier and they are a prime example. Most people couldn’t tell you who the #2 receiver is behind Colston. Ryan is the key. Health and 3rd year majority should equate to more productivity.

To SeenThisB4
First, it’s Maslow not Mazlovw. Second, since you are such a student of motivation theories, you should realize self-actualization is a transient level; so it is impossible for you to ’sit’ at that level. That is unless you are hooked up to some sort of feeding machine where you never become hungry and have never ventured outside where you were almost hit by a car, thus threatening your safety. Also, Maslow once stated he thought only about 2% of people achieved self-actualization. He even named some people he thought did achieve it: Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Eistein and Eleanor Roosevelt. Now I am very comfortable with who I am and confident in my abilities, but I would never be so bold put myself in the same classification as those people. Plus I find it difficult to believe someone that has supposedly achieved self-actualization would resort to name calling (falcants)…I just can’t picture Jefferson calling the British the ‘britass’ or Lincoln saying C.S.A. stands for corn squeezing a-holes.

JC: You are correct on that point. #2 is really just a number on a position chart on the coach’s clip board.

To me, there is no #1,#2,#3, or #4. When the Saints go vertical, all 4 recievers should be considered the prime target. It forces the defense to play a much simple strategy, because one false move, and they’ll have 1 or 2 receivers wide open. When you only have 1 or 2 primary receivers, it gives the defense the luxury of keying on certain players, it gives ‘em and edge. Payton and Brees have mastered that idea, and have been exploiting it for several years now. And their only getting better at it. Don’t you think the falcants would like to emulate that? My guess is: Yes.

Meier could very well end up being our version of Wes Welker. Thomas D knows this. If we can have a season like 2008 where we didn’t have any significant injuries, we will go as far as the wind will take us.

Matt Ryan is a cerebral quarterback. Guys like the recently cut Jemarcus Russell are not quarterbacks. They are guys with strong arms. Guys like Manning, Brees, and Brady watch film, break down teams, and study study study. What did Matt Ryan do this off season? He spent a significant chunk of it studying film of Manning, Brady and Brees. Watching how the signal call. How they observe opposing defenses. Ryan takes his job very seriously. (To all you “Terrence Moore” fans, still upset we didn’t take Glenn Dorsey???)

I for one am excited about this season. Michael Turner is taking his job seriously. He has dropped weight and has prepared himself for the grind. We are getting good news from our injured player from a year ago. Our secondary is much improved. Our receiving corps will only be as good as the signal caller, and he will solidify himself as a top 5 quarterback before the end of the year. We are deep, we are in camp, we are well coached, and we are hungry.

13-3 is my honest prediction. Starting the season 8-0 is definitely going to help. (Last year we played something like 5 games against teams coming off their bye week. Not this year.)

Meier has good speed. He was consistently one of the 3-5 fastest players on the Kansas team. I believe he ran a slow time at the combine (4.6) but then ran a 4.45 timed by the scouts at the KU Pro Day. He’s not shifty after he gets the ball. He doesn’t make the tackler mis. His YAC won’t be real high, but he runs routes like nobody I’ve ever seen in a Kansas Uni..in 30+ years. That includes guys several pros.

You will all love this kid once he takes the field. He will make at least one catch in the preseason that will be blow your mind. He’ll be a fan favorite, not because of his intelligence, team play, or the color of his skin, but because he will be the guy you rely on to get a first down, time after time.

I have all the confidence in the world that what he’s doing in practice will carry over to the field. I’m now a Falcons fan!

Ya’ll leave STB4 alone. We need him for comic relief. Every team needs a rival antagonist on their blog. Heck he Highram have a great time together…except Highram isn’t near as funny.

So, we have Roddy, Jenks and Douglas…not a bad bunch. But, if one of the young upstarts proves himself worthy, then Finn is in jeapordy. We all know this…he has been oft injured and isn’t getting younger. Great possession receiver…has moved the chains many, many times.

We know the team is high on Meier…for good reason. But we’ll see when the pads go on and the games begin. I’m excited about his potential and seeing what he’s got. So if we have RW, MJ, HD and KM that leaves one maybe two spots. Whoever it is will have to bring something to the table for ST. Finn has excelled on ST his entire career, so give him plus but can he stay healthy? He has always had the drive and desire to play.

Should be interesting.

Butt Crew…great post…hilarious! I’m sure STB4 enjoyed it too. We’re so lucky to have a rival fan in the blog to laugh at! If that’s what he wants to do with his time I have no problem with that. He said nothing bothers him, but we’ll see when the Saints lose how tolerant he really is.

But what do you do with Jenkins’ big contract? It’s too bad we couldn’t count on him catching the ball, while Finn is a real money player. I wonder how the new guys will be under the same pressure… one way to find out.

Hope all the Falcons fans get to see what kind of player, person, man, that Kerry Meier is. Total class, super character, unbelievable work ethic and lastly, a great athlete. He will give you everything he’s got and will make his teammates around him better. Dad’s, when those #80 MEIER jerseys become available, snatch em up for your kids. He is the poster child for what you would want your son/daughter athlete to be like. Hope Kerry gets the chance..alot of good guys in front of him I know.
I am really looking forward to being a falcon fan and have enjoyed reading about the team everyday. Looking forward to coming to Atlanta and seeing some games.
Something I’ve got to share: Two days before Kerry leaves for camp, he comes to watch my 8 year old son play machine pitch baseball..What a thrill for an 8 year old to have his next door neighbor, who happens to be a NFL player come to watch him. TOTAL CLASS! Good luck FALCONS and Kerry.

SEENTHISB4-I see you’re still getting your kicks by bashing the Falcons and making a fool of yourself in the process. Come on, how can you realistically criticize our receivers when even in your pass happy OFF MJenkins, our #3 receiving option, had 50 receptions, which was only one(1)fewer than your #2 receiver. Your top receiving option would have finished 3rd on our team, and didn’t even come close to matching our 2 top receivers.

And don’t give me that crap about spreading the ball around. I have no doubt whatsoever that DBrees is forced to spread the ball around since your primary receivers aren’t quick or fast enough to get open as often as the the Falcons primary receiving options. If they were, they’d certainly have more passes thrown their way, and thus more receptions.
