FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons caught a break from the heat Saturday morning.

When the first practice started there were clouds in the sky and the temperature was in the 80s. Near the end of practice, the humidity picked up and it was a little hotter.

Here are some of the highlights from the morning session:

–Wide receiver Brian Finneran (back), safety Matt Giordano (back) and tight end Colin Peek (knee) did not practice.

The Falcons are not certain about the extent of Peek’s injury and are calling him day-to-day at this point.

–The defense continued to dominate the offense in the third practice of training camp. They are beating players to the spot and getting their hands on a lot of passes.

Second-year cornerback Christopher Owens broke up a deep pass intended for Michael Jenkins.

However, rookie cornerback Dominique Franks dropped an interception that hit him in the hands.

–Running back Michael Turner continues to look good. He appears to be running much faster and is taking the corner at a higher rate of speed on his outside runs.

“I think Michael is in very good shape,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “Michael is committed to bounce back from the season last year that was shortened by injuries.”

–Undrafted rookie free agent Brandyn Harvey made a couple of tough catches in traffic. He was one of the stars of the offseason and continues to impress here early in training camp.

Having the defense looking good, this early, is very encouraging. I hope it means they have gelled into a solid, play making, unit!
I do want to know how many snaps Weatherspoon is taking with the first string defense. Also, is Nickolas lining up as the starting Will linebacker?

The defense should be outperforming the offense in camp. If they weren’t I’d be worried for sure. The offense is so much more complex than the defense and the offense has to work on timing and routes and patterns. The defense should be the ones getting after it. If it was the other way around I’d be worried about our defense. This season should be a good one. But we MUST KEEP EVERYONE HEALTHY.

Does this mean Matty Ice is having a bad start (defenders getting their hands on a lot of balls?)

the key to our offense is Michael Turner, so that sounds good, and the pass d was awful last year so that sounds good too

You guys are exactly right. I’m more concerned about our OL staying healthy. Glad to see Smitty playing it smart–most teams have stopped doing 2-a-days–hopefully, the extra work now will mean greater execution during the season.

OranJuceJones thats not a very nice thing to say about Finn, even though it is somewhat true. I do believe the Kid Meir was drafted to replace him. If he can’t be healthy, Im afraid Finn may not make the roster this time around.

OrangJuceJones, you are an ignorant a-hole. Finn is a key leader on the team and is as tough a ballplayer there is.

Defense is almost always in better shape than offense in the early pre-season. It’s the easier side of the ball from a playbook standpoint.

I predict Finn will be cut this camp. He’s a 34 year old receiver with injury problems. Love ya, Finn, but it’s time to move on. He was a good possession receiver before the injury in ‘06. Since then he’s been only barely hanging on.

It’s good to hear MT is hitting the corners hard. Ryan didn’t have a bad year last year (TD/INT was 22-14; pretty good for a second year QB. Russell only can wish to ever have such a year), but a QB’s best friend is a strong running game and that showed to be true in Ryan’s first two years.

MT is a nice RB to have, but he won’t have a long shelf-life. He’s 5′11″ at around 250 lbs. That is not a stick-around-the-NFL type body.

Birdman – I agree that defenses should be ahead of offenses at this point. Defense is reactionary.
itpdude – While Turner does have the body where you would expect him to end every run attempting to run though someone, I haven’t seen him take a lot of hits at the end of his runs during the past two seasons.

first and foremost of all….i love brian finneran…even years ago when the MAJORITY of falcon fans thought he was sorry and wanted to get rid of him….i thought he was good enough to keep.
but he is still here…because he is white. he is not so great to where he couldn’t be released.
like d.j.. shockley….if finneran were black…he would have been jettisoned years ago.

RACE CARD….your screen name says it all. Ya hate to see a white player on the Falcons? I, for one, think Finneran probably should be released if he’s not healthy during training camp. He’s been injured often it seems. Now, let’s see which black players need to be released because they’re black……….

When you practice against your own offense you have seen every look they have and you begin to anticipate the plays. After seeing the same play 5 times it’s very easy. Do not read that much into it people.

RACE CARD Please exit the chat room now… There is no race card to be played here. Finneran is and has been a VERY productive receiver for the birds. I hope that his body can hold up a little longer until we develope another possession receiver. To be honest, I don’t see how or why DJ Shockley was drafted. He was unproven in college and really didn’t develope the 3 years he has been with the Falcons. They did DJ a favor by drfating him… He made some good money the last few years and he was not really worth the pick.. As far as the rest of the team goes.. GO FALCONS!!!!

As a 5th year season ticket holder and a 15 year fan its the same team year after year, Why is Michael Jenkins and Fineran still on this team? We need an agressive sure handed WR opposite Rody White, and lets get another scat back to help Turner carry the load. Com’on, the boyscott football team has gotten old. The Saints went out an got Football players not a bunch of boyscouts. An Arthur Blank when you passed me and other Falcon fans on streets of Dallas last year in your SUV entourage flanked by the dallas police you could thrown us a few dollars for dinner, after all we did spent major bucks to follow the team to Dallas to get our butts whipped.

Kudos to Falcons for making practice a great event for fans. My 11-year-old had a blast. Roddy…although my son missed your autograph, we were still impressed you stood in that heat and humidity after a long morning practice to sign autographs. And you did it with an ear to ear smile the whole time! Way to go! Thanks to other Falcons as well.

Joel Augusta declined to take part in the All white basbketball league. I like Finneran two but it may be time. Maybe a good young receiver like Harvey can step up and make the team. I like our receivers but i think we could use a new fresher guy much like the nice surprise Harry Douglas provided us the year before last.

All right, listen up hiramsaint, vuduchild, and falcon sorry. I am going to pray for you all, because obviously you all are living desperate lives and are strung out on some serious drugs. I just hope you all come to your senses before its too late. For anyone who still thinks mv7 is a better qb than matty ice should go back and read the article that was on this website a while back. mv7 admitted that he didnt always put in the extra time when he was with our falcons. Sure he looked decent with the eagles last year, but he prepared for that game like he shoulda prepared for games when he was with us. And race card, I’m not so nieve that i think racism is completely gone from this world…. but REALLY? If you keep thinking like that, you will always feel like you never have a chance in life. Grow up and Nut up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and another thing about my comment about preperation by a qb, matty ice has been putting in the extra time and work since he was drafted. That is why he is a better leader and qb at this point in his career than mv7 was at the very same point in his young career. PEACE I’M OUT!

Why can’t R.White just shut up about M.Vick, he no longer is a falcon and i for one, am just tired of him getting falcons headlines, for goodness sakes he is an Eagle! anyway, if sure is ironic that Vick had just left party before the shooting-coincidence? Look for Kelly Meir to replace Finnergan-sorry to see him go! also the WR Harvey, was he a free agent undrafted? sounds like we got us a hidden gem to develop!
