Pro Bowler Roddy White has been working underneath a lot. Do the Falcons need to send him deep more often? (Brian Williams/AP)
Birdland – Some of the players started to show up at the team’s facilities yesterday.
Most of the players are expected to arrive back in town at some point today. They have to report Thursday morning.
This is the ninth in a series 10 position-by-position looks at the Falcons in the “COUNTDOWN TO TRAINING CAMP 2010.”
The players will hit the field for the first practice Friday.
We’ve already looked at the defensive line, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, offensive line, tight ends, wide receivers and running backs.
The quarterbacks are up today. Also, here’s the Sunday cover story on Ryan with some interesting comments from assistant head coach/quarterbacks Bill Musgrave.
In 2009, Matt Ryan battled back from injury to guide the franchise to its first back-to-back winning seasons.
He played down the stretch with a specially fitted shoe to protect his
If there were any remaining doubters in the locker room, he won them over with that display of toughness and guile.
While Ryan could improve his completion percentage and his touchdown-to-interception ratio, his bottom line stat is pretty impressive. He’s 20-10 in his first two seasons in the league.
Chris Redman was signed in free agency to serve again as Ryan’s backup. John Parker Wilson appears set as the No. 3 quarterback.

Matt Ryan: He completed 263 of 451 passes (58.3) for 2,916 yards, 22 touchdowns and 14 interceptions last season.
Chris Redman: Played in five games last season and showed that he was a keeper in a gutsy performance against New Orleans.
John Parker Wilson: Will get a chance to show if he’s improved during the exhibition season.

SeenThisB4 — I love Deke and Hebert!!! (Y’all need to tell Bobby that there’s no cheering in the press box!!!!) I don’t have to do their show and they don’t pay me. I do it for the love of the game and perhaps, they’ll buy me a beer at Lucy’s when I’m down there. My man Brian Allee-Walsh or Mike Tripplett will get to the bottom of pill gate.
JD2 — I had a message from Andy Simms (McCourty’s agent) this morning. Haven’t heard about Clausen. It’s 5 a.m. on West Coast and a message is waiting for David Dunn when he gets up. I’m hearing that Spoon will go down to the wire. Perhaps one of those early morning Friday deals just before practice. I’ll splash it across the front page when it goes down.

Joes Steak – Ryan has Roddy, Tony, Michael, Harry, Kerry, and Brian. Roddy is a true #1 WR, Jenkins had a down year do to Tony’s presence. He is more focused this offseason. Harry, Tony, and Kerry will be here to work the middle keeping defenses honest from trying to double Roddy or Tony

I think he’ll be 26 or 27 TD’s and 11 INT’s. It would be nice to keep it under 10 picks though.
Somewhere around 3500-3900 yards would be preferable.. Especially if we can get an 1100 or 1200 yard season out of Michael Turner.

I took All Pro QB DBrees 4 yr to lead his team to a winning season and win the 20th gm of his career. MRyan, with a new coaching staff, front off and team, won 11gms in his 1st yr while it took Brees 3yrs to reach 11wins. If DBrees can become the All Pro QB he’s become with his rocky start as an NFL QB, think of what QB MRyan can become if he continue to build upon his record setting start.
In 08 we were all run and little pass, and last yr, due to key injuries, we were mostly pass and little run. This yr, we’ll have the experience and the TE needed to overcome the limited passing OFF we had in 08. We’ll also have the depth to overcome the injuries that set us back in 09. Offensively, both our rushing and passing OFF will be solid, and that is what will make us so dangerous.
Our DEF really came together down the stretch, especially our run DEF, will definitely be much improved in all areas. We’ll have 3 DT’s, TLewis, TJohnson & VWalker, coming off our bench who’ve proven they’re capable of being productive starters. We have DE KBierman, who as a rotational DE, demonstrated he’s a definite upgrade over JAnderson, especially as a pass rusher.
After a yr of experience of as starters in our DEF system, we can expect improvement from OLB’s SNicholas and MPeterson, as well as safeties EColeman and TDeCoud. With former starter CWire, a more experienced SAdkins, and the addition of versatile rookie OLB SWeatherspoon, we have far more talent and depth at OLB.
At CB, both COwens and BGrimes stepped up big time as starters down the stretch. The beauty is, they, along with BWilliams and CJackson, will be competing for just one starting position. That means the losers in that battle will provide excellent CB depth.
The AINTS are very fragile and QB dependent, which means they’re only a key injury or two away from collapsing. We proved last yr we can weather key injuries to our backfield and OL, and still remain competitive and win. Even with one of the NFL’s toughest schedules last yr, and a bunch of unfortunate key injuries, we definitely remained competitive, and lost 2 winnable gms by 3pts each, one in overtime.
The AINTS high powered OFF couldn’t blow last yrs Falcon DEF off the field either time, so how can anyone expect them to do any better with this yrs much improved Falcons DEF? After all, what have they done to improve their OFF, and they’ve definitely done nothing with that sorry 25th ranked DEF?

Matt Ryan is a subpar QB
July 28th, 2010
10:09 am
I’m sorry people, but Matt Ryan is not the man for the job. Ryan is playing with a Pro bowl WR, a Pro Bowl caliber RB, and arguably the best TE the NFL has ever had. However, his numbers were down. An average QB would probably take this team to the Super Bowl with the names we have on offense.
I mean when you consider how easy the NFL has made it for a decent QB to be great by rule changes. For example, look at all of the 4000 Yd passers last year. I’m afraid Matt Ryan is demonstrating he is nothing more than a subpar QB.

Hey NOLA – I bet you were one of the fat kids who never took gym class and have no way of knowing what a real injury is as opposed to the painful hangnails you had.
I saw Ryan in only one of his college games (he was a junior then) and the boy got his tail smashed all night long and still led the team to the win.
He’s tough enough and he’s smart enough. If he truly has the innate physical ability to be a premier QB, it’ll happen.

I still think how Ryan does in the downfield passing game will depend on whether he gets better Oline pass-blocking play this year than last.
Last year he rarely had time to even look downfield, much less wind up and throw it there.
Of course play-calling with more screens and such to neutralize the rush would help, but for some reason Mularkey is allergic to screen plays.Remembering our playoff game in 08, it is also important that no snap-count tells are being provided to the Dline pass-rushers.

@Matt Ryan is a subpar QB :
It’s funny how you criticize Ryan for playing with a Pro Bowl WR (White), but did you realize that White was not a Pro Bowl WR until Ryan became the QB?
@Tess, there have been 40+ super bowl championship teams, and you know one thing they all have in common? Not one of them had Terrell Owens on the roster. Now that he is on the Bengals, that trend will continue.

This may come as a shock to most people here, mainly because I am saying it, but Matt Ryan has not been as good a quarterback as he should be.
I think the biggest reason he and the O-line struggled passing the ball is because defenses were able to predict the snap count. If you go back, and watch the Giants game you’ll see their D-line was really firing off the ball. It’s a problem. If you become predictable then you can predict losing.
That being said, I believe Matt Ryan would be better in a pure no huddle offense. Making calls at the line and adjusting to what he sees defenses doing. I have been comparing Matt Ryan to Peyton Manning. It’s not a pie is the sky comparison either. If anything Matt Ryan has appeared to mirror Manning’s early years.
I do believe that Matt Ryan will eventually become the best quarterback in the NFC, and perhaps the NFL! He is incredibly poised, patient and strong willed. The one area you could really knock him on was his accuracy but he has spent the offseason looking to improve in that area. If he is also more willing to check down and hit some underneath routes then his completion percentage, yards per game and winning percentage will all increase.
Again, I believe Matt Ryan will officially arrive as an elite quartback this season. At least I hope he does.
Perhaps the best news, I’ve gotten all day, is that we won’t have to hear fish house whinning for TO anymore!

Wow! It’s still stunning to me that all of a sudden, we’ve got fans of our oldest NFC W/S opponent–who spent decades with ATL, SF and a handful of other hapless franchises under the cellar of the NFL acting like the’re the Packers or somebody with an actual tradition of winning pro football. The ‘Niners managed a run–but ATL & NO have only managed a handful of memorable seasons put together. I’m all for seeing that change continue throughout the 2000’s, but 1 great season doesn’t represent a trend.
Every NFL QB (even Manning) has a steep learning curve and that includes Brees & Ryan. These are the next few seasons that will tell us for sure what ATL has in Ryan, but indications are quite positive. Our #2 QB situation is dicey, just like most teams with a great starter. Trying to save $ at back-up QB means keeping experienced, journeyman guys like Redman employed even with his middling winning % as a starter.
Everyone is talking like Dimitroff is done trading. I don’t believe it. He always seems to be watching out for some last-minute veteran signees. Just because we didn’t jump after TO doesn’t mean that TD isn’t looking for a few key vets to shore up any shaky areas he sees in camp, including WR.

HIRAMSAINT-I’ll do exactly what you and your fellow AINT fans have continued to do, and that’s pretend not to understand what was said or asked, or resort to sarcasm and/or reply with a question to try and deflect the question that was originally asked.
Most of what I’ve been talking about and focused on has dealt with the current state of both the Falcons and AINTS, as well as what will likely happen in the future and why. You, on the other hand, have dealt with what I’ve presented by issuing responses and pointing events and accomplishments of your teams very recent past.
You have understandably avoided talking about or referencing the CURRENT state of your beloved AINTS, especially your SORRY DEF. I would love to hear your ideas on how last yrs 25th ranked DEF is going to stop this yrs Falcon OFF when it’s healthy? RB MTurner will be quicker, faster and more motivated than he’s ever been. Our OL will also be more motivated, since 3 or our starters will be FA’s after the season and will be playing for new contracts.
QB MRyan will be out to prove he was the victim of some of the problems the team had last yr, not the cause. DE JAbraham will be motivated to prove he’s not over the hill, and last yr was a fluke. DE KBiermann will try to prove he deserves to be a starting DE, and that he can improve upon the excellent he had last season as a rotational DE.
I could go on and on about players like CB’s DRobinson, COwens & BGrimes, SS EColeman,’sOLB MPeterson & SNicholas, DT’s PJerry & TLewis etc, who will be out to prove something this season. Tell me what the AINTS have done during the off season to make their OFF and SORRY DEF better and luckier than the were last yr?

Don’t get me wrong, we’re going to do our thang this year. But I’m still concerned about the Running Back position. We need reliable speed.

CTK, Antone Smith and Dimitri Nance are great speedsters. I kind of like Nance a little better…because he hits the hole hard. Teams did not draft him, because of injuries in his senior year. Watch out for Nance, this guy has the “POTENTIAL” to be something special for the Falcon Family.

you’re constantly going on about what this one will ‘TRY” to do or what that one will “TRY” to do. i guess you are so all knowing that you know the minds of the individual players now. i’m not answering about what the saints have done because it’s been answered many many times , info is only a keystroke away unless you are K.S. and already know everything. tell me oh wise one – what will the scores of the 1st 5 falcons games be. i’d be more than willing to bet you not within 14 pts. on any of them

Ken strickland, there is nothing to talk about when you are the reigning SB champ and you are ranked #2 heading into the season.
The ‘cons on the other hand can keep talking about “next year” as usual. Next year = the battle cry of losers and Atlanta is synonymous with losing.
As I have said several times when you choke consistently against winning teams what makes you think all of a sudden you will have the confidence to believe you will come through?
Learn to walk before you run. beat teams with a winning record on a regular basis and your daddy will allow you to partake in conversations with adults.
’till then just bow down and show some respect.

Atlanta has a 45-37 record against your team. Your team didn’t have a winning season for 20 years straight. TWENTY YEARS IN A ROW. A town synonymous with losing, indeed!

One team that has a winning record against the Saints and that’s what counts according to you. “you always FAIL to take into account the 3 most important stats– fainal score- # win-# losses”. Come on back when you can say otherwise.

I will have to say that the Falcons have more wins over the saints! we can just go back to the last 8 games and stop guys! that is stopping where it looks good for you! We have to look at all the games and when you do that Your daddy says don’t speak until you have a better record!

piont taken birdword- the context was per season but i’ll give you that one. falcons all-time…276-390-6. saints all time…279-377-5. we’ve won more , lost less ,and tied less with 1 less season . now i’ll say it OTHERWISE…

saints all time…279-377-5. In those, you lost to the Falcons 45 times to 37. It is what it is, I’m afraid- a losing record to the Falcons.

And how do you go 20 years without a winning season? Atleast we were able to have winning seasons occasionally! The saints couldn’t win in 20 years!!!! Wow that is consistancy right there! You guys have us beat there! there is no way the Falcons can lose for 20 straight years!

i will admit , though , that both records are nothing to write home about. the saints star is still on the rise as a dynasty and it would not be considered a bad idea to try and emulate us. we followed a plan that the patriots have used– our coach was trained by gruden and parcells so smitty could look to him for guidance and example. he has plenty of room to fill up on those attention to detail type things

hiram—-When you lie you should expect to get called on it. The Jets were still in the thick of the playoff chase when Atlanta beat them. That is why Rex Ryan said the loss probably knocked them out of the playofs. Since you spend all day on the internet, maybe you should waddle over to youtube or ESPN and look at the video yourself!

This is it. I am so sick of Saints fans who have nothing better to do in their life than to try and prop themselves up by tearing everyone else down. If they had a life they wouldn’t be on the Falcons blog telling everyone. They would be out living it. Everyone knows that last years SB for the Saints was mandated by the NFL. They knew they couldn’t beat the Vikings so they were allowed to deliver low blows, late hits and head shots on Favre. The NFL was feeling sorry for the people of NO because they live in a cesspool, built under sea level. They only wish they had a town like Atlanta so they would have something to live for. That is why if you look at all the wins last year by the Saints you will notice one thing, .the people of NO wish they didn’t live there.. If you doubt any of this, then how come so many people who came to Atlanta after Katrina ARE STILL HERE!

NOLA-If there’s nothing to talk about, why are you here, talking? And for your information, I don’t profess to know it all. However, I can see how it might seem that way to someone that knows so little.
Three teams, the Patriots(3),Steelers(2, and Broncos(2), have won 7 of the last 13 Super Bowls, and the Colts are the only other Super Bowl winners in the last 13yrs to even make it back to the Super Bowl. All of the rest have been one and done, and that’s exactly what’s in store for the AINTS. Most knowledgeable football people know the AINTS aren’t good enough, and won’t be lucky enough to repeat.
You depend on trades and FA to acquire needed talent, and this yr at least, you’ve failed to attract any quality FA’s to replace the aging players you’ve lost. You’ve now reached the point where you don’t have anything worthy of trading, except your draft picks and players you can’t afford to give up.
Enjoy being fans of the 2009 Super Bowl champions my friends, because you’re going to take a long hard fall starting this yr. And once again you’ll become the BAG WEARING FANS OF THE FORMER FALLEN SUPER BOWL AINTS.
