The Atlanta Falcons are pulling out all of the stops to get first round draft pick Sean Weatherspoon signed and into training camp on time, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

The negotiations picked up on Monday with the Falcons talking directly with David Dunn, the chairman and chief executive officer of Athlete’s First, the California-based firm that represents Weatherspoon.

“I’m very confident that we are going to have things done and that he’ll ready to go at the beginning of camp,” Dimitroff said on Tuesday before speaking to the Atlanta Press Club.

Players are due to report to Flowery Branch on Thursday and scheduled for their first practice on Friday morning.

“When I talked to David Dunn and his representatives yesterday, we were very clear that we want to have him here day one,” Dimitroff said. “We’ve been fortunate . . . I think we have a nice streak of having our players ready, getting them signed in time and I think Sean will be signed in time.”

Dunn has not returned phone or e-mail messages.

The process of signing first round picks has been slow league-wide this offseason.

“Agents and players are waiting to see how things stack up,” Dimitroff said. “It’s a slotting system. No one was real energetic about jumping in early.”

As most teams are set to open camps, Dimitroff believes there could be a late rash of signings.

Weatherspoon was the 19th player selected in the draft. Philadelphia’s Jeremy Maclin was the 19th player selected last season and he received a five-year, $15.5 million deal.

Falcons coach Mike Smith is hopeful that Weatherspoon will be signed in time for the opening of training camp.

“There hasn’t really been a lot of action throughout the first and second rounds,” Smith said. “But of course, the closer that you get to the reporting date,  you’ll see more guys start to sign. I know that Thomas and his staff are working diligently to get him done. I don’t want to make any predictions, that’s for sure, but I’m optimistic that we’re going to get him done and have him here when we open up camp.”

Once he’s offered 20% more than the same pick received last year he’ll sign.

It would be great to get him into camp on time, but not a major loss if he isnt since he probably wont start right away anyways. Still, I’d like to see him there.

Can I also say how nice it is to read a board without anyone trash talking the Falcons

T.O…T.O. Even at almost 37, he’s still not a bad player. In fact, he can still be a game changer.
It’s worth the risk!!!

I must admit I do watch his little show. It’s funny. I wonder if Mo and Kita will like it in Cincinnati?

as much as i would like to see the anarchy that t.o. would bring to the falcons, it’s plainl to see the mgmnt. doesn’t want him and rightfully so. craig , i hope you don’t consider that trash talk.- t.o. and ochocinco will make a great batman and robin up north –where they need to be. the comedy aspect of those two over the hill jokers should be entertaining anyway

So refreshing to see competent & agressive management by an Atlanta pro sports organization.

It would be nice to have a competent and aggressive player response who claims he wants to be a Falcon, not a DEVA. I am really glad that our group of professional LB’s are there for the team and the fans and not looking for the organization to drool all over them.
If he doesn’t show maybe one of the really quality teams in the league (Oakland) would be willing to trade for him.

Remarkable, all of our other draft picks have been signed. ‘Spoon is the last one left. I’m also confident that he’ll have his name on the dotted line by the time camp opens on Friday.

Ledbetter, not nearly as insane as continuously mocking a center for the Falcons number 1.

(Dude, the center pick was pure genius. Pittsburgh thought so, too. –dol)

Whopper Doggy – Pouncey got picked AHEAD of us in the draft so… I won’t try and make fun of DLED over that! After all it wasn’t like he was picked by a team know forbad drafts. Pittsburgh has historically drafted well!

i hope william moore turns out to be the player everyone is expecting him to be. i think our defense is gonna be top ten this upcoming season with bierman getting his chance at LDE, moore at SS, and spoon at WSLB. im excited, i have a good feeling about this year.

Don’t ya’ll expect that since W’spoon wants the deal done on time it will be? Everybody wants to start out on the right foot and I fully expect a flurry of signings just before the opening of camp….

As far as I know, Bryant is the only first round pick to be signed so far. I don’t think TD would say that he feels certian that Spoon will be signed by Fri. if it wasn’t going to happen.
I think that the Falcons will pay him fairly and that he’s not going to be a harda$$.

Good morning Falcons Fam! The countdown is on. I am not worried about spoon he has been clear before he was even drafted that he wanted to be a falcon. If he holds out I will be pi$$ed because it would go against what he has said. I have faith that this management WILL get it done they are top notch. GO Falcons! I am more excited than a teenager waiting to meet the Rock!

DOL – Thanks for telling the T.O. addicts the facts about him ever becoming a Falcon. I see that there are some doubters among us either that or contributors that are high on crack. I mean nuts like this “Joes Steak place” that doesn’t think the Falcons can win 9 games with the schedule that they have this year. What’s up with that? How about letting us know as soon as the Spoon is signed. Keep up the great reporting!

Wake up fans, Mr. Blankcheck will get him signed, sealed, and delivered to training camp on time, even though he will pay Spoon more than the slotted system says he should get. Spoon will start season as starter, can’t pay that big money out and not play Spoon, Nicholas will be backup and rotate with Spoon and Peterson. Spoon also will play these LB positions as well, read between the lines when Coach Smith and Demiroff say all positions are tiered and interchangeable.
