Roddy White will try to put together his fourth consecutive 1,000-yard season.
Birdland – Just four days left to the players report!!!!
This is the seventh of 10 installments in the “COUNTDOWN TO TRAINING CAMP 2010.”
Each morning until Training Camp starts, we’ll take a quick look at a position group before the players report for camp on Thursday. They will hit the field for their first practice next Friday.
We’ve already looked at the defensive line, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties, offensive line and tight ends.
The wide receivers are up today.
Roddy White came up 47 yards short from posting his third consecutive 1,200 yard season. He did amass a career-high 11 touchdowns and went to his second consecutive Pro Bowl.
He will remain the main prong in the passing attack from the wide receiver position.
The under-appreciated Michael Jenkins caught 50 passes last season, but averaged only 2.5 yards after the catch.
Veteran Brian Finneran could provide some depth and veteran leadership to the unit.
The team drafted Kerry Meier in the fifth round and then added some rather intriguing undrafted free agents in Brandyn Harvey and Ryan Wolfe.

Wide receiver Harry Douglas is on schedule to return to the field soon. (Curtis Compton/Ccompton@ajc.com)
1. The entire unit needs to improve on yards after the catch.
2. Someone needs to step forward and become more of a threat in the slot.
3. With all of the attention on White and tight end Tony Gonzalez, there should be room for another receiver to step up and make some big plays.
4. Continue to block well downfield in the run game.
5. Make sure they have their assignments down when the team shifts into its no-huddle attack.
Here’s a look at the wide receivers:
Roddy White: His 11 touchdowns was tied for fourth in the NFL last season.
Harry Douglas: Had a strong rookie season and appeared ready to challenge for a starting spot before suffering a knee injury on the sixth day of training camp last season.
Kerry Meier: The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Meier had a school-record 226 career catches at Kansas.
Michael Jenkins: Had a solid 50-catch season for 635 yards, but only had one touchdown.
Brian Finneran: Veteran route runner, who can also contribute on special teams.
Eric Weems: Served as the punt and kickoff returner last season.
Ryan Wolfe: Keep an eye on him. He’s the Mountain West Conference’s leader in career receptions with 283. He will be competing for the fourth or fifth spots.
Troy Bergeron: He bounced back and forth between the practice squad and the active roster last season.
Tim Buckley: Played quarterback at Alcorn State.
Brandyn Harvey: He’s another player to keep an eye on in training camp. The 6-foot-4 receiver caught 131 passes for 1,835 yards and 11 touchdowns at Villanova.
Andy Strickland: Spent the last two weeks of the season on the practice squad. Starred at Wofford. Was in camp with Jacksonville last year.

Talk about the “have nots”! The falcant wide receiver roster is not very impressive. They’re slow, rigid midgits with metal hands. Even the US Border Patrol can “catch” better. No wonder they want to push the running game!

Good morning Gentlemen (you too Truth, whereever you are), looks like I have your attention. I know that I need to get my message over to you guys real fast since you all that attention deficit disorder and can’t seem to remember how the Saints kicked your team’s tailfeathers to smithereens last year.
You like talking about your birds? Let’s do it, @ wide receiver you have Roddy White and Michael Jenkins….FULL STOP. That’s it. Everyone else is nothing more than a camp body or a major question mark. In other words, no depth. Hence, a reliance on a running attack that is also dependent on a scarce commodity at Flowery Branch. It’s called being one dimensional. That’s why last year, when you guys had the ball near the end of the game, with a possible victory within reach, and had a 4th and 3 at mid field, everyone and their mother knew that your team was going to try to run for the first down, and got stuffed a yard short. Remember that? Or am I already losing your attention?

I went over to the saints blog yesterday. I read one that had a lot of folks on it. They seemed to be knowledgeable fans, that wanted to talk about football.
I didn’t see a lot of deragatory comments about other teams, and I did not see fans from other teams insulting the saints or their fans.
But, on every AJC Falcons blog and particularly DOL’s, you can’t even get started on a Falcons blog before one of these saints fans turds or one saints fan turd masgueradeing as three or four saints fan turds, logs on and starts the same old stupid, redundant spiel, that they rehash everyday.
It is getting tiresome and very boring.

I totally agree…it’s time someone else stepped up so defenses aren’t able to just focus on Roddy and Tony G. I guess Jenkins is what he is–never will be a true #2. All that height and speed and he still does not attack the ball in the air. Hopefully, Harry returns to form and one of the young guys step up to the challenge.

D. Led,
Do you really see any depth beyond the 4th WR? I think if Douglas comes back healthy we’ll be ok. I think Finn is on his last campaign. Weems has skills. Mularkey just needs to learn how to use personnel. All D-Coords know Ryan is either going to White or Gonzo. He should use that as a strength to open up others. I dont beleive in Jenkins anymore. He drops too many significant balls and i think he’ll get demoted this year mid-season if it happens again. He’s been here far too long. No excuses for him. We dont get that many passes at our jobs. This is no exception. Should be an interesting order on the chart when camp is done.

i dont know the real falcon, but you may be right. most players coming off an acl injury arent a factor until the second year after the injury. but thats normally when it happens during the real football season. harry was injured at the start of camp last year and has had almost a full year of recovery and rehab so he may be good to go. if not, and the other wrs arent up to par, then look for us to pick up someone else before or during the preseason. but i personaly think we will be fine.

B4 let me just remind u that any team from the NFC South that has gone to the SB. has not even made the playoffs the following year since realignment. O G Falcon Fan: I agree with you, the Saints have celebrated way too much, including Payton and Brees with their book selling garbage. Football is not about doing the Ellen or Oprah show or writing books, it’s about bashing heads. It’s time to put away the nonsense and get to business.
BUT, THAT BEING SAID: Let me remind you, that last year was the first year that the falcants had back to back winning seasons in franchise history. So, if the falcants can muster up enough testosterone to set a new standard for back to back winning seasons, albeit at an anemic 9-7, so too can the New Orleans Saints set a new standard for back to back NFC South championships.

The slot was our weakness last year and our hope is that Harry can come back with the same burst out of his cuts that he showed his rookie year. I think we addressed that this offseason with the guys we brought in. I dare any Saints fan to declare that any WR on our roster is just a camp body. They have at least 2 of their top three WR’s were late round picks that blossom. I think we have a couple that are ready for break out camps and regular season production.

Guys, just don’t respond to the trolls and they’ll get bored.
Here’s hoping Douglas can provide a deep threat and take some pressure off White. It’s usually too much to ask a rookie to be a great player his first year, but if one or two guys can contribute more than we got from our 3-6 WRs last year, it might be enough. I honestly think that a healthy, in-shape Turner will help the passing game more than anything else. When they start stacking the box we’ll hurt them with passes like ‘08.

Here’s my take on the whole TO situation: While a lot of his issue are self inflicted, I will admit that he’s getting a bad rap for how he performed in Buffalo. His numbers were way down, but hell, just take a look at what he had to deal with: 3 different QB’s(none of which were any good), a porous O-Line, and a completely dysfunctional offensive scheme. Remember that the offensive coordinator was fired just a couple of weeks before the season started.
That being said, TO is not what this team needs. I personally still like the guy, and while his skills are not what they used to be, he’s not completely washed up. Still, this Falcons team will have better depth at WR than they did last season. Combine with Mike Mularkey opening up the playbook, and you will see big numbers from this group in 2010.
Just sayin....

I think this issue of yds after the catch is being over blown in this instance. A lot of that is based on the types of routes a receiver is required to run. Possession receivers, like WWelken, will catch a ton of passes, but not gain many yds after the catch, because he’s running a lot of out’s, in’s and curls. Unless you’re lucky and the defender misses the tackle, you’re not going to get much after the catch with those types of routes.
The streak, stop and go, and the quick hitting in and out slant routes are the ones that get you yds after the catch. RWhite is the only receiver than seems to get any of those types of routes called for him. Also, conservative and predictable play calling leads to a lot of double teaming, which makes running after the catch very difficult.
Certain AINT fans want to make an issue of our WR’s, and once again end up putting FOOT IN MOUTH. While playing in a pass dominated OFF, their top FOUR(4)receivers, MColston-70, DHenderson-51, JShockey-48 & RMeachem-45, had 214 combined receptions. In a run dominated OFF, our top THREE(3) receivers, RWhite-85, TGonzalez-83 & MJenkins-50, had 218 combined receptions.
How can anyone with a clue be desperate enough for attention to question the Falcons primary receivers, when our top THREE(3) receivers had more receptions than the AINTS top FOUR(4)receivers. WR MColston, the AINTS leading receiver with 70, would have been no better than the #3 receiving option for the Falcons.
IT APPEARS QUITE OBVIOUS THAT AINT FANS JUST AREN’T EVOLVED ENOUGH TO GRASP THE MEANING OF OLD SAYING: “IF YOU’RE LIVING IN A GLASS HOUSE, YOU SHOULDN’T THROW STONES.” Although I’ve mentioned it a few times, they continue to show their total lack of awareness. I guess that affliction comes from yrs of pretending not to notice that SORRY DEF they’ve pretended not to notice or address. YOU’RE SHOOTING BLANKS AINT FANS.

CPat16 — Thanks for your kind words. Queen Led likes the pink bow tie. Normally 5 to 6 will make the team and two is a good number for the practice squad, too.
Ken Strickland — You are correct about the type of routes hindering the ability to amass YAC. But they need to make some plays and not concede yards. Make the catch and get moving up field.

What I think happened, last year, wasn’t Mike Jenkins taking a step back but more likely it was Matt Ryan getting fixated on Gonzo. Jenkins has never had the speed to truly stretch the field. He is a possession receiver. With Tony getting more targets then any TE in red zone situations. That’s how it goes when you get a new toy. You pay a lot of attention to it, in the beginning, and after a little while you go back to a more normal split. I expect Jenkins to have another solid year as the Falcons number 2 wide out and have a few more targets in the end zone. I think his stat line will be something like 56 cathes for 622 yards and 4-5 touchdowns. Those are respectable numbers for a second wideout. He compares favorably to other wideouts from run first offenses. If you put his numbers up against Braylon Edwards, Jericho Cotchery, Dwayne Bowe, Antonio Bryant, Eddie Royal and Terrel Owens you will see that Jenkins was not far off from any of them except in touchdown receptions. Add in the fact that not one of those teams had Roddy White and Tony Gonzalez and you have a very good number two.
I know a lot of us get caught up in comparing the Falcons to the Saints, because the Saints won it all last season, but it is not a fair comparison. Sure both teams have good O-lines, good quarterbacks and shaky defenses but they play two completely diferent games. The Saints believe they have to put up huge offensive numbers up to win. While the Falcons believe that controlling the clock and field position is their best way to win. You can make a case for both, a little easier if you’re a Saints fan.
Let’s face facts here. The Saints were the first run and shoot team to win a Super Bowl! The run and shoot is something Falcon Fans should know pretty well. And we should know the pain that offense’s inconsistency has caused for us. One year we would get into the playoffs and the following year we would contend for a top draft pick. The Saints certainly live up to the inconsistent lable. They went 7-9 then 8-8 and then became Super Bowl champs. What could this year bring?
Seen—–Given that Finneran is 6′5″, Jenkins is 6′4″ and both White and Douglas are 6′, I’m not sure how they qualify as midgets. I am sure that your other comments qualify you as a mental midget though!

Fan284, I don’t think you’ll see Jenks getting targeted more in the red zone. That is prime time for TG and Roddy. I could, however see Douglas getting some action within the 20. Jenks can’t be trusted in there.
Dez, your not in College anymore. You have entered the NFL and should pay hommage to the rituals. They may be a bit silly, but it’s the way things are and you are going to get further with your teammates if you go with the flow on this one. Simply not worth making a statement over it.

Kenneth: You still don’t comprehend the meaning behind: Spreading the ball around. The Saints didn’t just throw to 4 recievers last year. Let me put it to you this way, during the regular season: How many of the illustrious falcant receivers, got caught at least 35 passes? Yes you guessed: Three. Now, during the regular season, how many Saint receivers caught at least 35 passes? Let’s see, hmmm, oh yes, SEVEN, (7) Colston, Henderson, Shockey, Bush, Meachem, Pierre Thomas & David Thomas. You can chop your stats any way you want to. Like FalconFan284 said, it’s easier to justify our method.
If an opposing defense knows who you’re going to throw to, who has the advantage?
Have you figured out what the frequency is yet Kenneth?

Seen—–First of all, yes the Saints have been very inconsistent, both recently and in their long term existence. Their records indicate as much. The Falcons have also been very inconsistent. Did you have any other point to make? Do you have a point at all?
No, all you have is a willingness to make sophmoric and moronic comments about a subject you know little to nothing about! This is a football discussion board. If any of us need advice on being a nuisance we will all know to look you up. But, if we want to know about football, and in particular the Atlanta Falcons, then you would probably be the most horrible frame of reference. Case in point, you say our wide receivers now have short arms and that Jeremy Shockey is a better tight end than Tong G. Your analysis is questionable, at best. Why not try the intelligent route and explain exactly how the Saints defense matches up against the Falcons offense and why the Saints will win the head to head matchup? I’m betting that you just don’t know!
Also, if you ever quote me then you should use the entire quote. I said it was easier for you Saints fans because you have won the Super Bowl. I never said that it was the right way! And then I compared your Saints to the Jerry Glanville era Falcons of being inconsistent. Which you addressed in a later response to me. If you are going to post at the very least you should offer some kind of original insight; if you can.

Falconfan284: Sorry dude, didn’t mean to press your buttons so hard. Would you like a Vicondin?
The Saints defense is better equipped at stopping the falcant offense, because the falcant offense is much more predictable. As Kenneth pointed out, the falcants have three primary receivers, but are a run oriented offense. In affect, in obvious passing situations unless things change this year, the defense will be keying on the primary receiver, that takes away a full third of your passing offense, probably more. On first and 10, the Saint defense will key on your run attack, since you’re less likely to pass on that situation. Granted, there are no guarantees that the falcants will run on 1st and 10, but there are tendencies, and your head coach, well, he’s not exactly a trailblazer.

I think McCray will be hard pressed to make the final 53. I think Sharper’s on the bubble too, I hadn’t given that much thought until today, but with Macolm Jenkins moving to SS and Patrick Robinson in the fold, it gives them a little more flexibility and makes Sharper’s spot on the team, a little precarious, IMHO, especially so coming back from microsurgery on his knee. Darren’s gonna have to earn his spot this year, I really believe that. His edge is his experience and leadership skills, but is that enough this year? Going to be interesting to see.

Let me show you the state of the AINTS. As we all know, a chain is no stronger than it’s weakest link. Well, while the AINTS starting DEF is extremely weak, their backups are atrocious. Here are just a few examples.
1-They were forced to resign 34yr old 14yr safety DSharper for his 15th yr, because they couldn’t sign a FA replacement and don’t have anyone on their roster worthy of starting. This is the same DSharper who they originally didn’t offer a contract, because they originally didn’t want back.
2-They were forced to replace 31yr old 9yr vet DE CGrant with 31yr old 9yr vet FA DE ABrown. WOW, WHAT AN UPGRADE!
3-They were unable to acquire a FA to replace play making OLB SFujita, so they’ll have to resort to promoting one of their 5 UFA backup OLB’s. WOW, WHAT DEPTH!
The AINTS DEF is so weak, they don’t have any backups that are actually considered talented enough to be potential starters.
We saw an example of their DEF’s inability to stop our OFF last yr, when they struggled to stop a Falcon OFF that was using a 2nd or 3rd string QB, RB, LT & RG. We also saw their OFF struggle against a Falcon DEF that was using a 2nd or 3rd string DE, DT & 2 CB’s.
What are the AINTS going to do when their SORRY DEF has to face the rebirth of the #2 ranked 08 rushing OFF, along with a passing OFF that now features, along with 2 time Pro Bowl WR RWhite, MJenkins, and returning speedster HDouglas, Pro Bowl and HOF TE TGonzalez?

TO ALL FALCON FANS-the responses you are NOW reading from our AINT fans is what you would call DEFLECTION. They can’t deal with the truth of what I’m saying, so they try to DEFLECT everything with sarcasm and faked disbelief. They even try to DEFLECT what is being thrown at them by posing questions, rather than dealing with the truth of what’s being said.
SEENTHISB4-Based on some of your ill advised attempts to poke fun at certain aspects of our team, without stopping to consider the sorry state of your own, I’m not convinced you’d be able to recognize a CREDIBLE ANSWER. However, I won’t deny you an opportunity to as least try.
How can you ask that question of any team that loses the NFL’s 2nd leading rusher, Pro Bowl RB MTurner, ROY and Pro Bowl QB MRyan, #2 backup RB, JNorwood, and 3 starting OLinemen(LT SBaker, RT TClabo & RG HDahl), and at the same time feel justified in questioning someone else’s credibility or lack of understanding?
Tell me STB4. Do you think your beloved AINTS would be able to finish 9-7 if they lost their 2 top RB’s, 3 OLinemen and QB DBrees? Heck, you all know the AINTS would have totally collapsed if they lost DBrees alone? In fact, you finished last in the division with an 8-8 record in 08 with DBrees. If you can get over your delusions long enough to think rationally, you’d remember just how the AINTS totally collapsed after losing RB DMcAlister a few yrs back.

Seen—-You honestly do make me laugh. I asked you to explain why your Saints defense is going to stop our offense and you come back with something someone else said. Is it a lack of ability or intelligence?
Here’s one of the problems you face, if you could every understand that I was setting you up by asking you the original question. First, the Falcons have acquired players that are better able to stop the Saints offense. They drafted Sean Weatherspoon, who played the pass very well at Missouri, and Dunta Robinson, who happened to be the best available corner on the free agent market. You couple that with Brian Williams return and the Falcons have a defense that matches up favorably to the New Orleans Saints. Granted, I don’t believe that any defense can totally stop Brees and company but the Falcons are now better equipped then most.
Secondly, when the Falcons are on offense the matchup is even more favorable for Atlanta. As we all know, the Saints defensive tackles give up ground in the run game. Evidence for this is the league leading statistic that the Saints gave up 5 or more rushing yards on an astonishing 35% of all rushing plays. They have made no significant improvement at defensive tackle in the off season. However, they did release the biggest tackle on their team, last season, in Kendrick Clancy. All of the Saints linebackers are undersized and can be swallowed up. Evidence for this lies in the fact that four diferent teams topped 150 yards against them. Point of fact, Greg Williams believed this was such a big problem that he started using Roman Harper as an extra linebacker in a 4-4 front. That means they were playing more zero or one coverage, which opens up the long pass.
I know what you’re going to say, because you are easily predictable, “Why did the Saints out rush the Falcons?” LOL! That’s easy. Micheal Turner pounded the Saints for 151 yards in the Monday night game! The entire Saints team didn’t rush for as many yards as Turner alone! Yes, the Saints won the game because Drew Brees passed for 308 yards and two touchdowns but I believe I already addressed why that will not be the case in the coming season.
To sum it all up for you, The Falcons defense has improved against the pass, while the Saints defense has actually gotten worse against the best part of Atlanta’s offense! Since both games were very competitive you must look at what both teams have done; that is if you are able to do so. I don’t think you can which is why you have to rely on what others have said.

Well look at that, Seen goes to the bathroom, drops his drawers and out comes hiram. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.
Al Woods, a 4th round rookie, is your answer? You criticize me for saying a rookie would help the Atlanta defense match up against the Saints and then you throw out a rookie yourself? LMFAO!!!!!!! OMG! Now, that is funny! I must have missed where only Saint rookies are the only ones that can help. Sure, Woods didn’t do much in collage but now he’s a Saint and will part the waters and cure the oceans! LOL!!!!! I am actually laughing at you and can still type!
Also, I never said that Dunta alone could stop Drew Brees. Man, everything I’ve heard about the educational system in Louisiana is true! They can barely read and what they do read, they don’t understand. What was actually said was that I didn’t believe any team could stop Drew Brees and company but that the Falcons are better equipped then most teams. Yes, I said Dunta Robinson and Brian Williams were part of the reason, along with Sean Weatherspoon (a rookie that despite not being a Saint should still be very good).
I did notice that you have never tried to refute anything I say. All you seem capable of is trying to trade personal insults. Do you want me to analyze your team so you don’t have to wait for Seen? Between the two of you I have been very amused. More by your combined lack of ability then by anything else! I’m just happy that not all Saints fans show the same level of ignorance as the two of you!

Hiram—-Just so you don’t think I won’t answer your questions. No, Vilma looked very good on Fourth and Three. But is he also one of the linebackers that allowed the Saints to give up 35% of all rushing plays to go over 5 yards? He was on the field last year, right?
Also, because Dunta was an unrestricted free agent, he was allowed to sign with the team of his choosing. If you ust wonder over to a Texans posting you will see that they did try to resign Dunta.
I know you’re really upset because no team wanted to sign Darren Sharper but maybe, if you did some of that research you were talking about, you would know that!

Hiram—-You did exactly what I said you would do. You couldn’t talk football so you had to attempt a personal attack. It would be funny if you weren’t so pathetic! You have my sympathy. I know you have nothing to offer in way of conversation. You know you have nothing. LOL!
But since you want to really know, I’ll tell you. Seen went to the bathroom, then walked out and said, “You all should see what I just did!” Then a few seconds later you walked out and he said, “See, it’s huge!” Then you smiled with that sweet corn grin of yours and said, “I sure am BIG!!!!”
BTW there are dentists that can clean up some of that tartar build up. They just may not want to work on someone that smells like you! I can’t really blame them either!

HIRANSAINT-How is it you can find everything I said about your beloved AINTS so laughable, when everything I said about them was factual? Are you really laughing at the futulity of your own DEF? If so, I can understand you laughing to keep from crying. None of you AINT fans have addressed a single issue that I’ve brought, or answered a single question that I’ve asked.
Let’s see if you’re laughing when we go to New Orleans and whip the bayou out of your beloved AINTS. And we’re going to do it by destroying that sorry excuse for a DEF, that’s gotten even sorrier than last yrs DEF. You see, we proved down the stretch last yr that we can stop the run. Over the last 7gms, we were the NFL’s most dominant run DEF.
Do you really think one of your UFA OLB’s will replace the production of former OLB SFujita, or DE ABrown will improve upon former DE CGrant’s production? Do you honestly believe FS DSharper and DE CSmith will come close to duplicating last yrs production?
The high flying Falcon OFF is going to dominate the clock and your sorry DEF.

Michael Jenkins had a HORRIBLE year last year. See ATL vs NYG last year, he was terrible, cost us the game with his lack of concentration and bad hands. He looked like he was turning the corner in 2009, which is why he was rewarded with a new contract, and then he promptly took many steps back in 2009 and was much more of a liability than a weapon

ken – so dominant that you missed the playoffs? the jets can show you a dominant d and we won the super bowl so it really is a useless argument your putting up. the jets laid off for an already locked po birth and y’all barely squeaked a win in a meaningless game . your nowhwere man.

MAXXFALCON-How can you say MJenkins had a horrible season when he caught 50 passes after he went from the #2 to #3 receiving option when we added TE TGonzalez? You had to expect him to get fewer passes thrown his way, which would automatically lead to him getting fewer receptions.
You and others might want more from him in certain areas, but the circumstances just didn’t allow it to happen, although some of it was surely his fault. Check the NFL stats and see how many #3 WR’s managed to catch 50 passes, and you’ll see they played in a pass happy OFF. The leading receiver for the pass happy Super Bowl AINTS, MColston, had only 70 receptions last yr. Their 2nd leader in receptions had 51, only one more than MJenkins, our #3 receiving option.
JUST TRYING TO PUT THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE.

hiram—-When you tell a lie expect to get called on it. The Jets game was not a meaningless game for the Jets! In fact, following that game, Rex Ryan was quoted as saying he didn’t believe the Jets could make the playoffs any longer. They were in the heat of their playoff chase, no eliminated from it! They did not have their spot secured. They were still trying to catch the Pats for the division crown and the Ravens for the Wild Card. I would tell you to look it up but I know it’s useless.
Your statement just showed everyone here, that reads your garbage, you know nothing about football!
