Countdown to Training Camp: DAY 5 — Tight Ends

Birdland – This is the sixth of 10 installments in the “COUNTDOWN TO TRAINING CAMP 2010.”

Each morning until Training Camp starts, we’ll take a quick look at a position group before the players report for camp on Thursday. They will hit the field for their first practice Friday.

We’ve already looked at the defensive line, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties and offensive line.

The tight ends are up today.

THE REALLY BIG QUESTION: Can Tony Gonzalez continue to perform at a high level at his age?

It was easy to see the statistical impact that Tony Gonzalez had last season.  He caught 83 passes for 867 yards and six touchdowns.

But his real impact can’t be measured in just receptions.

When he’s on the field, defenses have to be aware of him and in some instances have two players to follow his routes. What that does is open things up for other receivers.

Justin Peelle is a savvy veteran at the No. 2 tight end slot.

There should be a good battle for the No. 3 spot between Keith Zinger, Michael Palmer and Colin Peek.

FIVE GOALS FOR THE TIGHT ENDS

Tight ends Justin Peelle and Leroy Banks (since released) signing autographs after a recent minicamp practice. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/AJC)

1.  Maintain a high level of blocking on the edge in the run game.

2. Continue to be a force on passing situations on third down.

3. Try harder to get yards after the catch.

4. Continue to develop the No. 3 tight end.

5. Be available for hot routes in blitz situations.

Here’s a look at the tight ends:

Tony Gonzalez: He needs one reception to reach 1,000 for his career.

Justin Peelle: Used mostly as a blocker last season as he caught 12 passes.

Keith Zinger: Played in 15 games last season. Has worked hard to improve his hands.

Colin Peek: Started his career at Georgia Tech, before transferring to Alabama and winning a national championship.

Michael Palmer: The Parkview High grad played at Clemson.

this is an easy one. tony will be fine this year, but he will want to retire soon. as long as there isn’t a serious injury to tony we’ll be set as this position. as for the future, we will need to start looking for another option because i see peele. zinger, peek, and palmer as serviceable at best.

TG brings more than just blocking and catching passes. He becomes an on field coach for the other TEs

TG’s receptions are down, yardage down, even his blocking ability isn’t where it should be. He’s not the threat he used to be, definitely the sun is setting on his once stellar career.

hes still better than shocky will EVER be seen, and ill tell you what ive seen before, bad saints teams and lots of them. in fact the only good one i can remember is last years team that had a little luck on their side (as do most winning teams, because it does take a little luck to be a winner at this level). remember 8-8 and 13-3 is only a year apart. things change quickly in this league so unless youre a supporter of the colts or pats then go somewhere else. maybe a saints blog where you all can relive your one-hit-wonder season over and over again. cause these birds are building for long term success and the saints are getting old. dont get me wrong i still see them as contenders for maybe a year or two but im sure im not as half as worried about the saints as you are of the falcons(why else would you constantly be annoying us on a FALCONS site). now im off to work, which im sure you know nothing about given how all you do all day is talk trash on a computer. my guess is youre a kid on summer break and thank god its almost over!

When there’s only one bonifide, albeit aging rapidly, TE on the team, there’s not much to write about.

That’s not D-Led’s fault. Although Orlando, you could have tried comparing the falcant TEs with the Saints’ explosive powerhouse TEs. You would have garnered some real attention with that.

Seen and Hiram——Shockey is so good that his numbers for last year read; 48 receptions for 569 yards and 3 touchdowns. He is a very good mediocre tight end. Need I also point out that Shockey has never been known for his blocking ability?

SeenThisB4

July 25th, 2010
12:07 pm

Shockey’s numbers are down simply because Brees and Payton spread the ball around. You must be the only NFL fan in America that doesn’t know that. Shockey is also known for being around when a pass completion Needs to be made.

FalconsFan284

July 25th, 2010

Seen—-Perhaps you can explain why Shockey was targeted only 11 times in the red zone last season? Wait I know. Jeremy Shockey is so good that Brees uses him as the fourth or fifth best option in the red zone! If we shrink the red zone down to inside the 5 yard line then Shockey had a very impressive 3 targets. He did manage to convert 1 of them into a touchdown though.
See the problem with you, and most Saints fans here, is that you say the dumbest possible thing you can think of and then you try to insult people that point out your obvious mistakes. You have my sympathy, as I am sure that you believe some of the garbage you type.
Next time, perhaps you could try doing some research. Research like; did you know, TG’s numbers from last year would rate as Shockey’s 2nd best season? Or, did you know, Shockey has never played a full 16 game schedule? Or, did you know Shockey was rated as the 16th tight end statistically last season; TG was 4th? Or, did you know Shockey has NEVER had more than 900 yards and 7 touchdowns in a season? I bet you didn’t. If you’re lucky Shockey may end up in the Hall of the Very Average!

284- if gonzo had good #’s it’s because ryan, when he wasn’t being sacked or throwing picks , had only 2 recievers to go to. obviously his #’s will be good , good enough in fact for a 9-7 season. the saints on the other hand had multiple targets and all were used. again as i said earlier we have a team- not individuals which is why we’re a championship team and the falcants are a 9-7 stay home and watch the playoffs from their sofa sit-com.

TG was great in the passing game last season, but he left a lot to be desired as a blocker. It’s obvious to me that Mularkey’s offense requires a dominant blocking TE and they missed Ben Hartsock last season. It was no coincidence that the Falcons’ run game took a while to get going and the Jets’ excelled. Hartsock is a difference maker and as long as the Falcons have a run first approach, they need a dominant blocker at TE.

The saints had a good year last year and no one can deny that. Reggie Bush showed his butt last year and only because it was a contract year for him. He won’t play that way this year. Drew is going to be Drew, he’s a hell of a QB(beware of the Madden curse). The falcons should’ve beaten the saints in both of those games. Especially the game at home. We had all those Aint fans shaken when we punched them in the mouth in the superdome. Trust me when I say the punch in the mouth is going to be that much more greater this year. If we’re healthy we’re going to be hell to deal with. The Aints were lucky in a lot of games last year, but that’s part of the game. Every team needs a little luck. SEENTHISB4-I can certainly see why you’d suggest waiting until the end of Shockey’s career before making a comparison, like it would really make a difference anyway. TGonzalez is a 34yr old 14yr vet who caught 83 passes for 867yrs and 6TD’s in a run dominated OFF. Shockey is a 29yr old 9yr vet who caught 48 passes for 569yds and 3TD’s in a pass dominated OFF.

And seriously, how much blocking do you really think Shockey has ever done? As soon as he throws his 1st block, we can talk about his vast improvement. Once again, you’ve put your foot in your mouth. It’s funny how you make fun of TG’s age and yrs in the league, while at the same time pretending not to notice that your beloved AINTS were forced to resign 34yr old 14yr vet FS DSharper. Why, because you didn’t have a single backup safety on your entire roster good enough to start.

THE AINTS ARE GOING TO CRASH BIG TIME THIS YR. AND YOUR SORRY 25TH RANKED DEF, WHICH HAS GOTTEN EVEN SORRIER, WILL BE THE CAUSE OF THAT CRASH.

On the other hand, we were thin in both talent and experience at OLB, with 34 yr old OLB MPeterson entering his 12th yr. And you’re wondering why we didn’t use our only pick in the 1st 2 rds on a lazy, questionable WR, rather than a much needed OLB? WHERE’S THE LOGIC?

HIRAMSAINT-get real and stop playing so many gms. If they actually wanted him back, why didn’t they offer him a contract, instead of allowing him to become a FA? They knew they had nothing on their roster, and thought they could upgrade through FA. When they found out they couldn’t, they immediately resigned him.

You Saints fans are so full of knowledge until you don’t even take into account you’re comparing a team of seasoned vets to the third youngest team in the league. How can you compare Brees to Ryan? How can you say you all spread the ball all around and not to just one player? Anyone who knows anything about football knows a young QB always goes to the TE. You all didn’t have a problem with a QB relying on his TE when Vick and Crumpler were playing two man football to beat your mighty Saints up and down the field. Did you? We’re adding weapons to this team just like you had to over a three year period. What difference does it make where we post? What’s da matter? You want to take your ball and run home? Or do we just irritate you too the point of anger and breakdown? Cause that’s what I want, to break you boys down to tears. Looks like I’m getting close to it too. LOL!!

@JJ:

MV7 fan? The dog killer? or should I say financier? Not hardly. I’m a Saints fan, born & raised New Orleanian. We had to deal with his cousin for 5 long years, I’m glad they’re both gone from our respective cities.

I don’t appreciate you calling us losers, but, I know you’re incapable of more sophisticated jargon. You’re a failure, it’s pitifully obvious.

b4, just being on our falcons blog tells us of your sophistication. How many falcon fans are on your blog? You are truely an idiot for continuing to post here but your an Aint, you dont know better. Here’s your description and because of you and Hiram, all saint fans:

1. an utterly foolish or senseless person.

2. Psychology . a person of the lowest order in a former classification of mental retardation, having a mental age of less than three years old and an intelligence quotient under 25.

Both franchises have had their moments but for the most part not much but hard times. Hard times make hardcore fans. Right now, both teams are on a serious upswing while CAR & TB are rebuilding. The key for both will be keeping their coaching staffs intact/upgrading(Mularkey?) Atlanta has been methodically building a team to compete long-term, so it’s imperative that one or both of the Rookie TE’s work their way quickly into starters. NO is banking on the same thing with Graham, who might turn into an awesome pro as a tweener.

it was because of his attitude and his attitude we turned into another offensive weapon. we post on here because this is the best rivalry in the nfl. thats why falcons/saints game are always a primetime game. you should consider it a compliment thay we’re on here. what better way to get hyped for the season than to stir it up before it happens

The Falcons have no excuses not make the playoffs last years schedule was brutal but this schedule is more favorable so i hope Gonzo does not worry about a yards and records just get to the championship.

Personally, I like the Saints Falcons rivalry, because it’s a lot like a serious college rivalry. I don’t like it when it turns personal and there’s derogatory name calling. They have as much right to support their team as we do, and both teams have had less than stellar histories.

We shouldn’t get all worked up and upset at them feeling good about their success. After all, their bag wearing past certainly didn’t prepared them for last yrs success, as you can obviously tell. They are a very fragile team that was built primarily through trades and FA. Therefore, their success will be short term, and they will certainly crash and burn. We, on the other hand, have built primarily through the draft, and as a result of drafting talented young players, our success will be long term, and far less costly.

We’ll replace our older veteran players, like TE TGonzalez with talented draft picks like CPeek or TPalmer, OC TMcClure with young talented draft pick JHawley and OLB MPeterson with young talented draft picks SWeatherspoon. An unusually high number of AINTS backups are UFA’s who they obviously don’t consider starting material. That explains why they signed 31yr old 9yr veteran FA DE ABrown and resigned 34yr old 14yr veteran FA FS DSharper. They’re going backwards instead of forward.

If you’ll notice, AINT fans only talk about their OFF and OFF players, and totally ignore their DEF, which is understandable. Unfortunately for them, the AINTS themselves have ignored their DEF, and will pay an embarrassing price in the yrs to come as a result. If both teams are healthy, there’s no way their DEF can come close to stopping or containing our OFF, while our DEF will be able to contain their OFF.

We saw examples of what I’m saying last yr when their DEF couldn’t stop a Falcon OFF with several 2nd and 3rd string backups starting. And their high powered OFF certainly didn’t roll over our DEF, which also had several 2nd and 3rd string backups.

Just read that Matt Ryan has mad an “eye-popping” donation to the Boston College Athletic Department.
Can anyone tell us how many millions of $$$ Michael Vick donated to Virginia Tech after he was drafted
by the Falcons?

Great article, DOL. A great TE like Gonzo would OPEN IT UP for cats like Harry Douglas OR Jerious Norwood. If healthy, either one is capable of having a M-O-N-S-T-E-R yr. Let us not forget the type of yr HD had in ‘08; BEFORE Gonzo. Add an emerging Jason Snelling (who has excellent hands in his own right), and you’ve given Matt Ryan more weapons than ANY Falcon qb in recent history. We’ve GOT to maximize the oppurtunity at hand, make no doubt about it.
