BIRDLAND — Falcons fullback Ovie Mughelli, the team’s environmentally savvy activist,  slipped behind enemy lines as part of a delegation of professional athletes to visit the Gulf Coast to explore the oil spill today.

Deep in the heart of New Orleans Saints territory, the boat Mughelli was on left from Myrtle Grove, Louisiana.

The group took a tour of the damage caused by the spill.

“On the whole boat ride you could see the booms trying to protect the coast, the wetlands and the marsh, but they weren’t doing the job,” Mughelli said via phone. “It wasn’t working 100 percent. There was still oil in the marsh. You can see where the oil had got into the pits of the marsh and devastated it. You could already see the process of where it was eroding the soil.”

Mughelli knows there are more environmental problems than what he could see from the boat.

Race car driver Leilani Munter.

Race car driver Leilani Munter.

“There is so much more going on underneath and that’s the scarier part,” Mughelli said. “There is twice as much going on underneath the water. There is more than what we can do with the resources that we have right now. It was a little disconcerting.”

Mughelli hopes to stress the connection between sports, health and a clean environment and why a full clean up could lead to more clean and renewable energy.

“I’m thrilled with the chance to come out here and see what’s going on first hand,” Mughelli said. “One of the most important things that you can do as an athlete is to make sure that other athletes, young and old, have a chance to do what we are doing, have clean water, have clean air, have clean beaches if you want to run on them to train. If we are supposed to be the responsible adults I feel like we are not doing our job right now. I’m very disappointed to see what we are leaving behind for the next generation to clean up.”

Other athletes on the tour included ex-NHL goalie Mike Richter, ex-Tampa Bay running back MikeAlstott, NHL player Andrew Ference, X game snowboarder Krista Bradford Ference, ARCA/NASCAR driver Leilani Munter, Olympic skier Stacy Cook, Olympic hammer thrower Loree Smith, Olympic race walker Gary Morgan and tennis star Chanda Rubin.

“This is not a (President Barack) Obama’s problem,” Richter said. “This is not a (British Petroleum) problem. This is everybody’s problem.”

Mughelli has been busy this offseason doing environment-friendly activities through his foundation. In addition to camps in Atlanta and his hometown of Charleston, he helped with a green event on Tybee Island.

The motto of Mughelli’s foundation is “our future is green.”

“I wish I could do more personally, but all I can do is spread awareness, help bring resources to the problem and hope that it is a wake-up call for us to move toward renewable energy, move away from oil and do right by our kids,” Mughelli said.

Saints fans can protest ’til the cows come home but their team’s play last season was as dirty as it comes.
The attitude starts at the top with their coaching staff cheating and stealing pain pills to augment their bad habits.
No justice will be forthcoming on either front–the NFL wants to cover up the scandal as quickly and quietly as possible and their “head” coach’s book is a joke and a fraud. They need to clean up their act just as badly as they need to clean up their stinking city. The League knows that the Saints are as befouled as the La. coastline, but will abet the lawlessness just to save face….
No punches pulled here!

If you have a weak stomach avoid tonight’s “ESPY’s” award circus. The sports network has been on NO’s collective jocks since that Monday night game when they reopened the Superdome against us a few years back and tonight I predict the bogus love-fest will continue. The NFL has plenty to be ashamed of but nothing more egregious than the on-going cover-up of prescription drug theft/use by key members of the NO coaching staff PRIOR to last year’s Superbowl run, with the complete knowledge of the NFL. They allowed a veteran FBI agent to be pilloried in the national media for months–after that same agent tried his damnedest to get the Saints to deal with the matter privately–they opted for a smear campaign to attempt to deflect attention from the CRIMES commited by coaches Peyton and Vitt–crimes captured on video by agent Santini. I fully expect the Saints to sweep the ESPY’s, further demonstrating the enabling of criminal behaviour by ESPN and the self-serving abetting of lawbreaking by the NFL to protect their “feel-good” franchise.
Now, put that in your pipe and smoke it, Saints fans….

I note that the Saints fan posting on here failed to address the FACTS outlined in my above posts, choosing instead to launch ad hominem attacks on Falcon fans in general rather than facing the truth. I am not surprised in the least, as not even the League is willing to honestly ‘fess up. The NFL has no problem enforcing it’s substance use policy except when it runs contrary to their P.R. needs. The drug thefts by Vitt and Peyton were known prior to last season and covered up to protect the NFL’s feel-good(REAL good in the case of these coaches) story line and Truth be damned….
I expect fans to make excuses for their teams/personnel (like a few Vick lovers on here) but not the League/Commish. To paraphrase a slogan from the ‘Nam era–let’s “destroy the League in order to save the NO franchise”…..

3rd try posting this:
My source is NOLA.com, the Saints hometown paper (hardly biased against the Saints). Your (and Saints mgmt’s) attempts to paint an highly-decorated career FBI agent as a mere “rent-a-cop” is totally disingenuous. The team hired him to do exactly what he tried to do–root out wrongdoing in a franchise plagued with scandals. Instead, team mgmt attempted to smear an honorable man who tried to get the team to deal with the situation quietly (and legally) in order to protect Vitt and Peyton–and the NFL went along to protect their PR efforts to paint NO as the “feel-good” sports story ESPN is continually promoting, including tonight’s ESPY’s. The only “fantasizing” I’m engaging in is that the NFL would do the right thing, rather than what’s expedient….

SeenThisB4

Waynester: Think about what you’re saying. If you’re getting your information from NOLA.com, (an INTERNET WEBSITE of a local newspaper) then you are admitting to knowing nothing but hearsay. Let me say it again, NOTHING BUT HEARSAY. This bozo, was not hired to root out wrongdoing in the franchise. He was hired to provide security for the team, not to attempt to blackmail his own employer.

He chose to quit last summer, when the team decided not to pursue his recommendations. Then, after the Saints win the Superbowl he sues the team publically with the “allegation” of being forced out by a hostile environment! Yeah, uh-huh. Sure, sure, anything he says! An X-FBI, gun carrying Security professional, forced out by a hostile environment? Or more realistically, by the alterior motive of greed?

And of course, you as an opposing fan will eat up every word of this bozo’s allegation because, 1) Your jealous, 2) Your envious, and 3) Your malicious.

And you want the NFL to do the right thing?! Which would be what? Lemme guess, take the Lombardi Trophy from the Saints and award it to the falcants! Would that make you feel better?

I am upset, but not in the way you think.
Last season played out the way it did and no one can take that away from NO. My point(since you keep missing it) is that the NFL KNEW what happened over a YEAR AGO and failed to act. The League is more than happy to punish a Charles Grant or Mike Vick to give an appearance of being “tough” but not to take action against a franchise they’re desperately trying to hype to prevent their loss to another city and show them in a positive light.
Even Loomis said that he hired the 31-year veteran agent not as a “rent-a-cop” but in response to the numerous scandals the team was facing 5 years ago, before Peyton came on board. Up until he blew the whistle on FELONY drug theft (after trying repeatedly to get Loomis to act in the best interest of the franchise) he was credited with the turn-around in team security. Why some fans insist on blaming the messenger–only you can answer. By the way, he only sought lost wages, not an example of “extortion” by any measure. Funny how all of a sudden, when it suits your purposes, do you call the Times/Picayune a “local website”, when it’s a centuries-old newspaper with nation-wide circulation. You keep shooting at the messenger(Santini, and now me)because the truth is so repellant. MY point(again) is that if the national sports media had given this story the coverage that the NO press has, the NFL would have been forced to take prompt, appropriate action against Vitt, Peyton, Loomis and perhaps even the trainer for clear violation of league rules…..

The standard for NFL employees is MUCH higher that that for ordinary citizens in similar circumstances. You can continue willfully disregarding everything that has come to light throughout this investigation as is your right, but don’t expect the rest of the football world to go along. I expect the team and it’s fans to behave exactly the way you are but not the League. And you know what Waynester? NOLA.com, AJC.com and every other news media outlet in the country, including all the major television networks were all reporting, just a few weeks ago, that BP was claiming only 1000 barrels of oil were leaking in the gulf, then it was only 5000 barrels oil were leaking every day. And yeah, they had video too. Where does that figure stand today?

Bottom line: Just cuz it’s reported in the media, doesn’t mean it’s true. CHECK AND MATE!

waynester

July 14th, 2010
7:09 pm

There is no checkmate–apples are not oranges–even the Times Picayunes’ Jeff Duncan wrote that both Jefferson Parish and DEA’s investigation was lackluster due to political pressure. You jokers can keep on trying to make this personal with me, but throwing up smokescreens, muddying the waters or whatever other cliched excuses you can imagine doesn’t change the fact that the Saints organization attempted to cover this up and when that failed tried to shift the focus onto Santini–the messenger they themselves hired to police an unruly franchise. Santini is SO distrusted that he was immediately hired as head of security for the entire UFL!
You’ve read no excuses being made by me for last season’s results and never will. It’s you fellows that continue to attribute those sentiments to me(unfairly, of course). Again, I expect no more from you, and much more from the League….

waynester

Furthermore, Santini was never fired–he resigned last August after trying to get Mickey Loomis to do the right thing for the franchise–after showing him video of LB’s coach Vitt removing hundreds of Vicodin from the team medical locker and audiotaped recordings of trainers Scottie Patton and Kevin Mangum discussing orders from Loomis to forge the medical logs to hide the theft.
You guys keep saying “wait for arbitration–we don’t know anything yet” which is patently false. The team only opted for arbitration at the 11th hour to prevent Santini’s lawyer from making the recordings public…..

You keep changing the subject to Falcons personnel rather than your GM and coaches–even so, I’m not here to defend coach Smith’s reaction to Hall’s intrusion onto our sideline during the Wash. game but he didn’t contest the fine– he paid the price. Again with the personal stuff, eh?
As I’ve made clear (I thought) ESPN is a joke and their “awards show” even more meaningless than the Grammys. Congratulations on your team’s Superbowl win– they earned it on the field. My complaint continues to be with what the team’s leadership did (and are still doing) off the field. Change the name of the franchise involved to Raiders or Redskins and ESPN would be all over the story, you’d probably not care and I would still be outraged over the treatment of a lifetime law enforcement officer. At least you got a few chuckles last night and I slept like a baby having thoroughly enjoyed our online exchanges.
As far as Smith is concerned, your comrade hiramsaint kept dragging him into the discussion for comparison’s sake and the difference between their responses to being caught on tape doing wrong were like night and day. Smith admitted his mistake and paid the price. The Saints leadership is hiding behind their lawyer’s skirts, trying to push their comeuppance as far into the future as possible. The NFL wants the same thing–to drag it out long enough that the average sportsfan forgets that if justice had been swift , the complexion of last season would have been dramatically different with Vitt, Loomis and Peyton involved in litigation DURING the season. 31 other franchises were affected by the League’s footdragging, abetted by ESPN….

SeenThisB4

July 15th, 2010
1:41 pm

Maybe so, but Vitt and Payton were on the sidelines not on the field, and Loomis was up in his box suite during each and every game, so exactly how they other 31 franchises were affected is not as nubious as you would think. First of all, the Saints only played 15 of the other 31 franchises last year, therefore, more than half of the 31 teams you cite were not even remotely affected one way or another. Assuming that Payton and Vitt were either suspended, fired, incarcerated or otherwise indisposed, Gregg Williams would have managed the defense, and probably the offense as well, and Drew Brees would have managed the offense on the field. I bet Gregg Williams is as aggressive on offense as he is on defense. Exactly how these 15 teams would have benefitted by the absense of Payton and Vitt, nobody, including you, will never, ever know. Who knows, maybe we would have gone 19-0, instead of 16-3.

All I know is that Payton is going to be on the sidelines this year, and he is going to put a game plan together for each and every game.

I don’t recall the whole story on Smith and his altercation, but my guess would be is that that video made itself to the public airways, and it would have been extremely hard for him to “dodge” the fine. The Saints video on the other hand, hasn’t been made public, so right now, it’s Santini’s word against Loomis, Payton and Vitt’s statements. Since the Saints are my team, I’m standing with them, you certainly can’t find fault with that. If there was a story there, ESPN would be all over it, hell they spent an hour on Lebron saying: I’m going to Miami. Don’t hand me “collusion” between the Saints, ESPN, and NFL, just because the events haven’t unraveled like you would have liked them to. That’s just sour grapes.

Oh and regarding your allegation that the Saints management opted for arbitration at the 11th hour to keep those tapes from becoming public. First of all, arbitration, it requires both parties to agree to it. And as a condition of employment, didn’t Santini agree that any disputes would be settled via arbitration? I believe his contract did require that. So, it wasn’t so much that the Saints management opted for it, as much as they elected to go that route; it is cleaner, it is faster, and it is cheaper. And Santini agreed to it, probably cause he figures he can get “paid”. I still believe Santini is nothing more than a gold digger looking to get “his”, the easy way.

Hmmm, I guess you have to add NBC to the conspiracy theory since the Saints/viqueens game will be broadcast live, nationwide on NBC. The Saints are not only going to beat down the vikings silly this year and send Favre back for more reconstructive ankle surgery, but they will be hoisting the Super Bowl Banner up in their collective faces! LOL! Two weeks after that, it will be time to dismantle the hopes and eviscerate the dreams of the falcant nation. I can’t wait!!! Who Dat!!!

First off, despite your penchant for name-calling and juvenile chest-pounding, I actually respect your loyalty and belief in the face of mounting evidence. I would expect no less from a true fan of his/her team. At some point , however, the rose-colored glasses have to come off and the facts faced.
I never asserted that Loomis the Commish and ESPN all sat down on a conference call and planned this out. What I do recognize is an identical alignment of interests. The NFL has spent millions over the last 5 years trying to rehab the image of the Saints as their “feel-good” franchise. Everyone loves an underdog and “feel-good” stories rope in the viewers for ESPN. Loomis and co. are the beneficiaries of this largesse. No one wants the boat rocked, even when obvious felonies are involved(ala Rothlisberger). This isn’t a one-team league, however, and yes there is a domino effect that disadvantages all 31 other teams. Even a die-hard fan like you must recognize the virtual impossibility of the Saints enjoying identical success last season with your key leadership either under suspension or in prison. Possible, yes–probable, no way. Yet you and other fans continue to parrot the Saint’s official position that Santini is merely a disgruntled ex-empolyee out for revenge when, in fact, before all this Santini and Loomis were good buddies–up to the point when Loomis tried to involve Santini in a felony cover-up. The team could have opted for arbitration immediately, but chose to use the time attempting a character assasination on a 31 yr FBI vet. Only when they became aware that Santini had his own copies of the incriminating tapes and was about to release them to the press did Loomis’ lawyers demand arbitration, cutting off any public discussion of the case. Now they are trying to drag out the proceedings, putting as much time as possible between the Superbowl celebrations and the public revealing of the facts. Santini’s attornies have repeatedly stated that they are ONLY seeking lost wages, court costs and public vindication of their client–hardly the gold-digging you accuse him of. I’m too cynical to expect justice in this or any other case involving the wealthy or famous in our society, but I hold out hope that our nation won’t continue to put these “stars” above the law….

Actually TRUTH, I do care about proof. The type of proof the Saints fans are demanding, however, is the type found in court. Thanks to Saints management we will, unfortunately, be denied that standard of proof they demand. I must note that the standard of proof in a courtroom is not required in the court of public opinion where we are currently engaged. The only individual who has been willing to go on the record regarding this case is Mr. Santini, and they choose to disbelieve anything he has said, blindly following, hoping against all hope that it’s just not so. Where are the ringing endorsements of Mickey Loomis as a person of unassailable character? Where is the adamant insistence that coach Vitt would never steal drugs? Where are the assertions that Peyton would never lie about receiving stolen pain pills? Nowhere to be found–because they don’t even believe their own guys are coming clean. It’s easier for them to accuse the blameless of being motivated by money, when that’s the ONLY thing that matters to the franchise, the League and the sycophantic sports press.

Ya’ll just can’t resist attempting to assign motives to me without even coming close to my true motivation, despite what I’ve written repeatedly. You keep jumping to the conclusion that I harbor some jealousy toward the Saints finally having a great season. Just like the Falcons, the Saints have been a laughingstock from their inception. If not for the league looking to avoid massive embarrassment, you’d still be among the perennial losers of the NFL–just like Atlanta. You got your win and couldn’t care less if it was fairly won, as evidenced by your myriad excuses for why that mean ol’ FBI man was trying to victimize your poor franchise. How dare he not go along with the peer pressure and stoop to actually recording the thefts, gathering PROOF of his accusations before leveling them?
hiramsaint, I failed to give you credit for admitting that such actions as documented by Santini are firing-level offenses. You’re right. If a nurse at a hospital or a pharmacy tech at CVS was captured on tape stealing painkillers they would immediately be fired and charges brought against them for violation of the Controlled Substances Act. The corporation involved wouldn’t attempt to conceal the offense from company headquarters and keep the thief on the payroll just to avoid embarrassment. They wouldn’t immediately try to change the focus to the guy who installed the security camera which caught the theft in progress and ferreted out other co-conspirators within the company. That’s not the way business is conducted except, apparently in New Orleans–a town founded by pirates and run by gangsters, mobsters and crooked politicians with the cops in their pockets–and for centuries. If you truly want to know what motivates me to continue this discussion long after it’s apparent that you two don’t “give a rat’s rear” about getting to the bottom of it–why not try asking instead of doing what you’re accusing me of–making it up as you go along…..

one more thing- they weren’t actually caught on tape one was said tobe vitt but it’s not substantiated and the other was said to be payton but no-one can tell who it is. i do find it hard to believe that those two were not aware of security cameras which makes the whole allegation dubious. i would also believe payton, as head coach would have no problem getting vicodin from a team or personal doctor. as a side note- i broke my leg a number of years ago and was given vicodin. i would say it’s more of a strong headache medicine than a pain killer but things being as they are , it still is a controlled substance though nowhere near the level of percoset

Doesn’t it make your blood boil when you see an OJ Simpson get away with murder and go to jail over memorabilia? A Roman Polanski drugs and rapes a 13 year old girl and gets by with a psychiatric evaluation before skipping the country? Ben Rothlisberger attacks women and gets a 4 week suspension? Michael Vick finances a gambling ring killing innocent critters and has his own reality show and still is employed in the NFL? You see where I’m going with this. There is a double standard for “celebrities” and everyone else. Superbowl coaches with best selling ghost-written books slide for felonies that would put you or I under the jail. That blatant injustice enrages and motivates the hell out of me. That mobsters and crooked politicians receive short country club sentences while those who use the drugs they import get long prison terms royally pisses me off. A mom fails to report that her daughter was involved in a hit and run and goes to jail–an NFL GM fails to report the theft of hundreds of painkillers by his coaches and not only keeps his job, but is allowed to try and destroy the career of the guy who uncovered the thefts. That’s the reason I’m mad enough to be on here posting at midnight instead of watching the ESPY’s celebrate sports celebrities that ought to be in the slammer or rehab at least.
Doesn’t this disparity bother you? Or are you so caught up in hero worship and the jubilation of hoisting a trophy that you will ignore the injustice of it? I can’t– and couldn’t– ESPECIALLY if it was “my” team trying to pull this crap. What I can’t understand is– how can you?
ps
How is being positively identified on videotape by SECRETLY hidden cameras(at the time they suspected lower-level employees) not the same as being “caught on tape”? Lots of Americans are addicted to painkillers and are not media darlings–they are arrested and forced into rehab. I’m sure Peyton’s “connections” that you cited earlier would have a difficult time procuring the incredible number of pills that Vitt was stealing and passing along free-of-charge–no drug dealer would do that no matter how big a Who Dat fan he was. Lots of us live in continual pain and deal with it daily(car crash, in my case) without resorting to addictive black market medications–what’s Peyton’s excuse?
Answer: he doesn’t need one due to his celebrity status. Even when caught red-handed he can still make a fortune off his book and a stint in rehab may even help his sales. That is what motivates me and produces such a level of vitriol. I’m sure you’re tired of arguing with me and the feeling is mutual. I can’t promise not to bring it up again because I’m too passionate about justice(and football) to sit on the sidelines when I see things like this, but for now I’ll give it a rest. Good luck in 2010…..

waynester: I just read most of your diatribes you put up last night. You are a classic hypocrite. CLASSIC.

You come on here and beat your chest to the drums of the high road, saying that you are only motivated by truth and justice, and that you don’t make personal attacks, and you condemn Saints management for disparaging an honest ex-FBI, ex-employee. And yet you disparage not only the entire citizenry of New Orleans but every citizen that’s ever lived here. Let me quote you too: ” That’s not the way business is conducted except, apparently in New Orleans–a town founded by pirates and run by gangsters, mobsters and crooked politicians with the cops in their pockets–and for centuries. ”

Your double standard is why I don’t take a word you say seriously. Gov. Edwards, OJ Simpson, & Michael Vick, even Roman Pulanski, they all got their day in a court of law. What you convienently forget is that Gov Edwards was a FOUR term Governor and he served his entire term even when he was being charged, Pulanski admitted his crime in court as a plea deal and skipped the country when the system gave him the opportunity to do so; you already know that OJ got let go by a jury that wouldn’t trust a white prosecutor, and Vick ran that dog operation for years while he was YOUR QB and sticking his middle finger up at you.

If Vitt, Payton, and Loomis are guilty of something, I AM more than content to let the judicial system settle it and dictate reparation. Will there be eventual justice doled out? I don’t know and I don’t care and even if there is, I am sure it won’t be enough to satisfy you. I’m not gonna lose any sleep over that, nor will I pretend to agonize over the unfair advantages the RICH, and the celebrity, enjoy, not just in this country but in every country on Earth.
.
NOR WILL I DISPARAGE AN ENTIRE CITY AND IT’S HISTORY BECAUSE OF ONE COMPLETE MORON ON A SPORTS BLOG.

I will not wish you a respondent “Good luck in 2010″ because I know you didn’t mean it, and neither would I. NOT TO YOU.

You’ve repeatedly said you don’t give a rip what I say, think or believe–so this is my final response to you(hiramsaint seems like a decent bloke, unlike yourself).
The only way I disparaged the “entire citizenry of NO and everyone…” is if every one of those folks are “pirates, gangsters, mobsters or crooked politicians/cops”.
Former Gov. Edwards was as crooked as a snake and deceived the people of La. for decades before getting caught. If that’s the type of leadership you want, more’s the pity.
At least you finally “took the high road” yourself In at last facing the possibility that the artful dodgers in the Saints front office have done something worthy of judicial review, but then you go and ruin it by saying you don’t care if justice is eventually doled out or not–and I’m the hypocrite? I tell you exactly why this situation bothers me as just another example of a long-running trend in jurisprudence and you suggest I’m insincere. You throw up your hands and say “well, that’s just the way it is–accept it” that’s precisely the attitude that allows evil to flourish. You’re right about one thing, though, the only way I’d be satisfied is if these celebs get the same exact sentence as Joe Crackhead for the same exact crime. That’s equality under the law, otherwise known as fairness and justice–but you’ve already said you don’t care and wouldn’t lose any sleep one way or another. Bless your heart–so you won’t wish me good luck because we disagree–well, you take the low road and I’ll take the high road and let the Judge of all make the call as to my sincerity or lack thereof. I’m not “returning serve” as this isn’t a game to me and I’m just as sick of your attitude as you seem to be with me personally.

That’s cool, I’ve got a great sense of humor about most things but not this. I hope you (and anyone else for that matter) never have to experience it yourself–but washing your hands of the situation–”it is what it is, what are you going to do” won’t do anything to change what’s wrong. Just because “we don’t know all the facts and probably never will”(reminds me of Pontius Pilate asking ‘what is truth’ suggesting that the truth is unknowable) doesn’t mean we shouldn’t exercise sound judgement based on the facts available to us. If my judgement is wrong I’ll feel more than just silly– I’ll have to pay for it in spades as I believe we’ll be judged as we judge others. If we see something we believe is wrong it’s our duty to agitate for change until it happens. For now, I’ve agitated you enough– seeing as you sorta agree that I have sufficient reason to be intolerant of such fundamental unfairness. As for you cohort B4, the man won’t even accept a kindness.
