NFL looking into shooting at Vick’s birthday party

Roddy White attended Michael Vick's football camp, but had left the party before an early a.m. shooting occurred.

Updated, Mon. 7:36 a.m.

The National Football League and the Philadelphia Eagles are gathering information on the shooting that occurred after Michael Vick’s birthday party last Thursday outside of Virginia Beach.

The league is checking to see if the player conduct policy was violated or if Vick violated his federal probation order. He’s under probation for three years as part of his federal dogfighting conviction.

Vick’s attorney stated that he was not involved in the shooting.

Falcons wide receiver Roddy White, who went to help at Vick’s youth football game and was at the party, said they both had left long before the shooting occurred.

“We have been looking into it to determine the facts,” NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in an e-mail Sunday sent to USA Today.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell addressed Vick’s plight at the rookie symposium to reporters last night.
“Obviously, we’ve got to look and see whether there was any violation of policy,” Goodell said.

Vick could be facing another suspension from the league.

Updated, SAT 9:24 A.M.

Falcons Pro Bowl wide receiver Roddy White was at  Michael Vick’s 30th birthday party, but left before the shooting of one of Vick’s co-defendants in the federal dog fighting case occurred.

“We were already gone by the time that stuff started happening, so I don’t know what’s going to go on with that or whatever, but we didn’t have anything to do with it,” White told the Newport News Daily Press during a break in the youth football camp.

Falcons Pro Bowl wide receiver Roddy White attended Michael Vick’s football camp at Hampton University on Thursday but was not at a party later that night when a shooting took place.

“Just got off the plane. Goin(g) to Mike Vick’s football camp in VA. Should be good,” White tweeted at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday off his Twitter.com account.

Later, at 11: 05 he tweeted, “Camp was nice. It was hot, but fun.”

Jonathan Feinsod spoke to White’s mother and she said Roddy was fine. He wasn’t sure if White was in Virginia or back in Atlanta, but he was not present at the time of the shooting.

“Roddy is pretty loyal to his friends,” Feinsod said on Friday. “I’m sure he wasn’t involved in anything.”

Several Virginia media outlets have reported that Quanis Phillips, one of Vick’s co-defendants in the federal dogfighting trial, was shot after a birthday party for Vick after 2 a.m. Friday morning.

Lawrence Woodward, Vick’s attorney, said his client was not involved or present during the shooting.

Former Falcon DeAngelo Hall, who currently plays for the Washington Redskins, was listed as one o f the “invited” guests on the flyer for the party. But Friday evening he tweeted that he wasn’t there.

“I understand I was mentioned as a special ‘invited’ guest to attend, but as most of you know I’ve been on vacation with my family,” Hall sent in a tweet at 3:49 on Friday.

“Michael Vick’s ALL WHITE 30th Birthday Bash.”

Tickets cost $50, and the party was advertised as beginning at 9 p.m and ending at 2 a.m while promising a guest list that included NBA star Allen Iverson and Washington Redskins cornerback DeAngelo Hall, both natives of the area, and a host of B-list celebrities.

Whose? — Fault is it this time……BP? State of Virginia? Santa Claus? Jesus? God? US Soccer Team? North Pole? George Washington? We know its gotta be somebody else’s fault instead of his own, because responsibility is a “BAD” word that he shy’s away from. Doesn’t he have a wife and kid he can hang with on his 30th bday at home? Again………what is responsibility.

Save the race thing. Never heard Jason Campbell, Donovan McNabb, or Doug Williams have those same problems.

At the football camp, Vick was asked by a reporter Friday afternoon whether he had any comment on the incident.

“Watch what you do. Pick and choose your friends carefully. You just can’t put yourself in vulnerable situations,” Vick said.

I think VIck is done in the NFL. What a waste. He was given a second chance, but apparently, he just has terrible judgement. Where was Tony Dungy? I admire him for putting on the camp, and I am glad Roddy attended, but why have a party in your name, especially if you did not attend? what good could possibly come from it? No upside, all downside, kinda like dogfighting. The man just don’t get it.

“WTF?”
Does that comment apply to Big Ben in Pittsburg as well. A lot of young African American males want to be athletes because that’s all they see. A lot of the successful doctors people see on TV or hear about are either white or some other minority but there aren’t many black doctors or lawyers or anybody outside of the entertainment sector that they see and can relate to. It’s easier to do something when you see somebody from your neighborhood, your background, have your experiences make something of themselves. Sadly, though, the only “Successful” men that are seen are in the sports and music and the others, they aren’t know by young African American Males because that’s not what’s portrayed to them.

After reading the espn article it’s apparent that the media is turning a non story about a guy being shot at a Va. nightclub where Vick had long since left the club hours earlier, to get a reaction and the good ole ajc beat writer follows suit!

The last time I checked there was nothing in Vick’s release saying he couldn’t have a Birthday Party and he was not there when the shooting happened. He can’t control other people and the guy that got shot maybe he wasn’t even invited and came and started trouble after Vick left. Leave Vick alone.

With due respect DOL, trouble ain’t following Vick around. It’s the company he chooses to keep. So he’s still hangin’ with one of his Bad Newz Kennelz Boyz, huh? It seems he hasn’t learned much from his experiences.

I like Mike Vick the football player. I think Mike Vick the dog-fighter/killer has paid his debt for his crimes. I think Mike Vick the product endorser died about three years ago. I’d like to think Mike the human being could put this s–t behind him and build a productive life for himself and his family.

It’s beginning to look like that’s not gonna happen. He’s either too damned stubborn or too damned dumb.

That’s a shame.

In Vick’s probation does it say he cannot have a birthday party. Phillips shows up when it is over and vick is gone and gets shot. Where in this is a probation violation. May be a probation violation for who ever shot him.

Track Dawg. Don’t know the terms of his felony. Is he allowed to be around Q? If an investigation turns up evidence that he was, or that he was around firearms, he very well might end up back in prison.

The Eagles also might very well dump him just because they do not want to be associated with him anymore. A big birthday bash is not exactly humble, and add to it where somebody gets shot. I think it is 50/50 he ever takes a snap.

I don’t take glee in this, disgust is a better word, and I very well doubt I am alone.

D. Orlando Ledbetter

I don’t have the federal probation order in front of me, but one of them was to not associate with felons or any of the co-defendants. THAT’S HOW PROBATION is an issue here or could be an issue.

Vick got back in the NFL because he “Changed”, he was “humbled”. Holding a big birthday bash, where one of his old dog fighting buddies shows up is not exactly “Humble” now is it? He has not changed one iota, sould be interesting to see if Goodall agrees.

10:34 am

To ALL of My Young African-American Brothers:

Let this be a lesson to you. Do not commit these petty crimes. You will be caught and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law (guilty or not). It has nothing to do with morals. You must understand that morals have nothing to do with the law.

I understand that the way that society is set up, many of you will be forced to break the law just to have a chance in this world. So if you are going to break it….break it big. Study Enron and WorldCom and Maddof and Bush (both)and BP and Oxendine and the careers and activities of hundreds of other successful criminal enterprises. If you can buy or spin enough credibility, or have good enough connections, you can commit any crime you want to. Punishment will be minimal because the unwashed masses will be busy looking at whatever sensationalist headline grabbing blurb that any hack with a computer keyboard can get on the web.

Here is the problem. The black community has a huge problem with black on black murder. Every day the AJC headlines somebody in the black community a “brother”.

Now here is Vick, supposedly showing that he has changed, that he has learned, and throws a party where a black guy gets show by another black guy.

Not good for his image, or the image of the NFL, African American community, and his credibility talking ot youth groups is shot.
